I go with the third option, a 1290 SAS...which combines both. I see the XR as an upright sports bike and the GS as a comfortable touring bike that goes off road. They’re both great, but I would not REPLACE a GS with an XR. If I had to pick one, it would be the GS.
I had an 18 XR for two years and now a 19 GS. GS is overall a better bike. But oh boy the XR has muscles... lots and lots of muscles. Arms thick as thighs of a normal-bike kind of muscles. Capable of choking the life out of you without even trying kind of... you get the point. Damn I miss the XR... I want to see what the M1000XR will be like if it's built. Take my money BMW!
I had a 17 xr now a 19 gs. I'm thinking of swapping back as I miss the inline 4. The only thing stopping me is the crap colour range. I would miss the GS, if only I could have both.. first world problems hey!
I have to say I did not expect that. I have seen probably all vids about the S1000XR, especially from the professionals. But for me this is one of the best reviews about this bike and now I'm sure I'm going to buy it. Thanks man and keep on going like that.
I enjoyed your road report and suggest you do more of them, you have a beautiful country and nice roads. Where you have dogs in certain areas we in Africa have cats 🤣🤣
Dude ... you had me cracking up several times ... your injection of humor, whether purposeful or not, is very well timed! Great review and I enjoyed it very much ... liked and subscribed! And fyi ... two bikes in the garage ... 2004 Honda RC51 and 2016 BMW S1000XR ... going to admit, the XR has spoiled me ... and going back to the RC, when I show her some love, scares the hell out of me ... no computer, no ABS, no traction control, no slipper/ quick-shift, no assisted suspension ... you actually have to "ride a motorcycle" ... barbaric 😜😂😂😂 ... but so raw and, in short bursts, so fun!! The XR though ... comfort and every bit as sharp as any sport bike on the road ... the absolute BEST of both worlds! Cheers!!
I think your s1000xr video is the best Iv'e seen about this bike and your considerable enthusiasm for it comes out in bucket loads . If I was looking to blow 17 thousand English pounds on something mad and exiting this is a fantastic option .
Thanks for a superb review. It would appear that this bike gives you real comfort AND performance without compromising on either. I’m not a great fan of 4 cylinder bikes as I love torquey twins but this has certainly caught my eye as I want all day comfort and performance too and as good as everyone thinks the GS is I just couldn’t live with its looks and I already have an R1200 RS. Time to change...🤔maybe?
I'm so close to choosing one of these bikes. Rode it a month ago and still can't stop thinking about it. Coming from a Triumph Tiger 800, which has punched above its weight for 7 seven years. Currently torn between the S1000XR, the new Tiger 900 and a couple of retros like the Speed Twin and R Nine T. Wish I could afford all of them. Will test ride again in a couple of weeks and make a decision. Thanks for a terrific review!
Really excellent review, if I were looking for a new bike then I would have an extremely good idea if I wanted to ride the BMW or not. Also, what a beautiful place you were riding in, like Scotland... on steroids.
Nice and complete all around review... My concern or more like curiosity was about the effectiveness of those cornering lights at night... Thank you for bringing “the light” on my concern...
Doode, your 1250 GS Adventure review is still the best I've seen on the tube, it pushed my decision to buy that bike. Thanks for your concise, detailed, and real reviews.
'Little bit of Poo' describes it perfectly! The rush of power past 6,000rpms is mind boggling. I've only got 400 miles on my 23 XR Msport, so I haven't even taken it to 12k yet 😳
Thanks for a great indepth adult review. I enjoy your personality and way of expressing things. Your English is very good too. Romania looks lovely BTW.
Just found your channel today. Little feedback from my side. I really liked your presentation style and your humor. So the video was good, until you had the night ride scene in the video. Than it became perfect. That is such a brilliant idea. Awesome!
Another great UA-cam video from LWH. Love the dead pan sense of humour. Rapidly becoming one of my favourite vlogs. XR sounds like it’s in the gym and not skipped ANY leg days. Was torn between this and the GS but for two up it had to be the GS. I have my 2.5 Rocket if I need to shit myself riding 👍
🤣🤣👍 another great funny review, thank you, rode the 900xr then 1000xr a couple of weeks after, loved both, but the price 🤔 looks suburb in red with carbon highlights🥰 looking at changing in 9 months or so, used 1000xr, 🙏 god willing...and thanks for sharing your phone holder 👍 i assume it fit into the bmw satnav holder and converts it??
Excellent review. Wish you would've put a camera near the exhaust where we could have gotten some good sounds bites of when you revved that beast. Got to have the obligatory rev in a tunnel.😁
Great to see you out and about - Romania is such a big, remote, beautiful country - would love to see more adventures out and about with the GS or other bikes on review.... cheers!
Hey, I am planning to get one this week… 2016 are selling for $11k and 2020 is for $15k…. I had s1kRR for last 4 years… is it worth paying extra 4 grand for newer model ?
Thorough and entertaining review. Wonderful landscape included. As an older rider(62) I was concerned about the body position. You said you would raise the handle bars, however, after hours of riding you weren’t suffering. Would this be an issue for buying the bike? Must get to 🇷🇴...
Another excellent outdoor review. Is the flashing white light at the top of the TFT screen a shift light ? You seemed to ignore it a few times. I'm a GS guy, just can't go back to a chain and it's maintenance.
Love your review, it is exactly of what I am in consideration between GSA and XR. Which one I should buy? what I need is a truly comfortable for 300 miles per ride.
I realize you were riding in a cooler climate, but did you notice any engine heat on your legs? I had a 19 XR and in south Texas it got very hot on my left leg after the bike was warmed up and I was forced to go 45mph or slower
Really great review!!! I listened to your comments about vibrations. So do you think that at the motorway speed (130 kmh) are really very low and don't bother your hands? Is the bike agile and nimble at low speed. tight curves ? Cheers from Rome - Italy
I had a 2018 version of this bike and there were no vibrations that bothered me. The bike is very agile. I just sold my RR to go back to the XR. Ride safe my friend!
I can’t believe car drivers flash indicators to inform you when it’s safe to pass (also the fact they even know you’re there). In Sydney if you see an indicator, it’s been left on by mistake, bumped while reaching for a phone or the driver intends turning but isn’t quite sure if it’s to go left or right!! YES, THEY ARE AWFUL!!
Be honest, few bikes marketed as "adventure bikes" are for adventure riding. For adventure riding use the machines that invented adventure riding, a dual sport bike. I like the XR but it struggled in a gravel road. Riding with my group with one of these "adventure bikes" off road would be both a disaster and a photo opportunity. The perspective depends on which bike you are on. Imagine it loaded with a few days of fuel, food, and camping gear. Nice road bike.
I really like this bike. I am in market for getting my touring needs sorted. I am very much confused as I would wanna keep the vehicle for 10 years at least so it has to be reliable. I have a thing for inline 4s but I am not sure if that would be a good idea to do long distances. Great bike. Great review. Great sense of humor, keep it up o'l mate. ✔✔✔
Forget romantic candlelight dinners! That was Dave's CV-19 lock down project. BMW locked him in a shed of BMW spare parts. Nice work Dave.

Great review, very thorough and interesting. And you have really cute dogs in Romania.
