He produced Korns first demo CD back in 1993 as well, which most people would say started the Nu Metal movement

I remember where I was and what I was doing the first time I heard "Blind". It blew my doors off. I was screaming for everyone to SHUT THE FUCK UP at the end of the song hoping I would hear the DJ name who or what had just blown my mind. he said "Korn" and I said "WTF kinda shit is that" and later that same day I had picked up the CD from the mall and I found out exactly WTF kinda shit it was and it was glorious

Same feeling. I saw it on MTV Superock at the end of an episode and bought the cassette the next day. It was insane and so different. Love that album.
The sad thing is: A friend from elementary school was trying to describe the song "blind" to me but he didn't know the song name, but he ended up killing himself at such a young age. I looked everywhere for the song but the only album I found that was out was "life is peachy"
When I finally found the first album I must have skipped over blind a few times because it didn't have the guitar intros he described to me. I let it play out and sure enough that back and forth guitar build-up came and hit full on. I was amazed but also really sad at the same time as the tone was perfect for how I was feeling losing a friend like that so young.
Korn self titled 1994 album is incredible and I listen to it in my car to this day.

@@richardwellend3806 Lol, wut? The Cure on self titled sounds like an actual band, with actual live, analog instrumentals. The drummer upgraded his energy on that record, his fills on "Us Or Them" are brutal, how he is punching the shit out of his drum kit during the chorus.
All instrumentals on Cure record sounds like actual instrumentals. As someone, that played on drums and little bit on bass and guitar, i love the way how REAL the record sounds. No samples, pure analog, nothing fancy.
Almost like an noise album. And yeah, that is coming from someone, that loves Seventeen Seconds (i even own the record).

Not really watch beavis and butthead on korn blind video.. they expose that they were not very original. I like korn but they stole alot of shit from bands. Faith no more RHCP and sepultura suicidal tendencies and slayer riffs. They were not original in the end slipknot that was a little different but look at a band like RATM. There first two records dont sound like anything at the time both were released.
FAITH NO MORE AND MR.BUNGLE did, mike patton also. lol
@@sussychachi no they didn’t, FNM were doing metal combined with dream pop and atmosphere and jazz. They weren’t doing what Jonathan and Korn came out doing, which went darker than anything since the grunge bands. Let’s not debate either because we love them both in their own right.
@@MichaelLopez-nc3xz "Stole a lot of shit from bands," what? I'm not even a KoRn fan, but c'mon man. One could easily argue that RHCP "stole" from scat and funk. The same could be said for both Faith No More and RCHP "stealing" from hip-hop, jazz, etc. Sonically, KoRn and Slayer sound nothing alike. Musically, I'd be surprised to find a Slayer riff in a KoRn song and there's definitely no Slayer-esqe solos. Suicidal Tendencies? The bass groove? I mean, that's sort of a bass player thing, lol.
My point is, saying, "Stole," is harsh. Influenced? Sure, that's fair. Is it fair to say, "Suicide Silence stole from KoRn," of course not. The influence is obviously there but the bands are very dissimilar. Ironically, Jonathan Davis accused Sepultura and Ross of "stealing" KoRn's sound--"“One that I thought was a big compliment, but I also thought was fucked up, was Sepultura’s ‘Roots’ album. That was just a blatant Korn rip-off, and I had it out with producer Ross Robinson about that, because he just took our sound and gave it to Sepultura.”
Like Davis, I think Max Cavalera's response of calling that, "Childish," also applies to your reply.
Korn was influenced by sepultura and metal in general, they just played the heavy riffs with 7strings . I was more surprised by the lyrical raw content even to this day.
The movie "Who then now?" they filmed between the debut and sophomore albums is one of my favourite band videos. I have the VHS somewhere still (I hope) You see Ross in it a lot and the sunflower seed spitting he talks about.
I still have mine. I just don’t have a VHS player anymore.

Who?thennow is such a great VHS home video. I owned the VHS back in the 90s and to this day I always say watching that home video is the ultimate test for any music fan who wants to discover Korns music, if you watch Who?thennow and you're still not a fan of KoRn after watching that you will most likely NEVER be a fan!!
this man is responsible for some of the best records of all time. really awesome to see some insight into the records we grew up with as kids.
Back in the 90's Korn were something special. They were very unique not just in their music but their image too... at the time no other band looked or sounded like them, even more so in the UK where I'm from.

I was thinking more about their dreadlocks and hip-hop style attire such as the baggy jeans, beanie hats and sports jerseys. The Adidas tracksuit was more of Jonathan's thing which he's admitted many times was his personal tribute to RUN-DMC.

You guys should check out their "The Unquestionable Truth" EP. Pretty heavy and the riffs are insane. Very underrated

I remember watching the who then now vhs tape of korn and Robinson in the booth Jonathan talking about the lyrics and how impressed he looked when he said “those are some sick lyrics.” And he’s still talking about them today. Respect, man.
Yea, props to the interviewer. Not throwing a bunch of useless questions, letting him speak as much as he wants. You can feel that energy from the late 90's early 2000's when he speaks. Gave me chills, I was in middle school when I heard Blind! Fuck man. They where the reason I started playing music all through school to this day.
Same here, KoRn inspired me to start playing guitar back in the late 90s! BTW, if you're not aware this is Chris Garza from the band Suicide Silence. He is a huge KoRn fan and Suicide Silence basically started off as a band doing KoRn covers!
I didn’t know Ross was such an integral part of Korn’s family before the album process. Super cool.
I remember I was at a family reunion and I went off with my older cousin. He was old enough to drive. Iooked up to him in a lot of ways.
We sat in his car and he put Korns first album in(it came out around the time. I'm 38 now, and like....idk 9 or something in this story. Max 12.)

KORN best band ever. No one has ever and will never sound like them. You cannot compare them nor Jonathan to any other sound in this world .Love them sooo much. Their music has made my life so much better.I love them all and Ross Robinson too.

Man Ross is the man. This nervous now old dude who has a true introverted love of music. He was the best producer and the literal progenitor of the post-grunge/early nu-metal era. JD should have kept that post grunge voice he had in the first and second album.
It's too bad that this day and age of music is gone. Kind of like a fireworks...if you weren't there, you missed it...and it was great!!! Also it's very admirable that Ross does not mention the word drugs or throw band members under the bus.

I was in 8th grade when first album dropped. My gosh man, I wish we could go back to that time.
All of us born in the early to mid 80s, who are rock and metal fans, remember where we were and what we were doing the first time we heard KoRn! Same can be said about younger kids these days, but the feeling was more special back then because they were an up and coming band who most music fans had not been exposed to yet!

The Cure as well, in the same nu-mteal era and while its buried a bit you can hear the same influence he had on all the others in there.

@@techdeathhippie6319 oh i like that album, but Ross didn't finish that album either. He bailed several weeks before it was done and the band was left to pick up the scraps. it defiinitely felt unfinished too. i do enjoy some of the songs, but it's nowhere near the first two he did.

@@wadegarrett2376 agreed. They’re fan base has completely shifted to a new generation. I’m shocked when I hear so many people compliment The Nothing. I think a time came when a lot of people gave up on Korn and new younger fans came on board who don’t really care about what Korn put out early in their career. They connect more with the albums now and mid career.

First heard KoRn - Blind at the end credits of The Street Fighter Animated Movie (anime) and my mind was blown.
Dude the way he chokes up and his voice crackles just talking about them. Says a lot about how the band as a whole were just in a really really dark place. Man well glad that life had other better plans for them for all them to have sober up and think about their future. Shit man

Never really got into Limp Bizkit, largely due to my dislike for Fred Durst during their peak. I appreciate that they blended rap with metal though. Were they the first mainstream band to do this though? Probably not..legitimate question though, as I'm sure someone reading this knows. Korn were and still are in my top 10 metal bands though; they take me right back to when my buddy in High School lent me one of their CDs (album with freak on a leash) so for the nostalgia factor alone they still remain in my top ten despite all the bands I've discovered since. I've ways respected their courage in experimentation too and not just clinging on to the 'metal stereotype'.
Faith boys more, Anthrax (I'm the man),anthrax with public enemy (bring the noise) are a few earlier rap metal I can think of.

I'm an older man now. Its crazy how many people sh*t on Korn, but literally are influenced by them. Before Korn, it was either dressing like a woman or dressing like a homeless person (but I do love my grunge). Korn made hard rock accessible to so many non-whites and whites who also didn't fit those images.
Bands don’t bring thus level of excite to kids any more. Main reason is because Rick is not mainstream . So young kids now see it as an anomaly not godly like kids saw it as then
Bs. There are plently of bands bringing excitement "now" to kids. Always has been and always will be that way.

I didn't say that the amount of excitement was the same. The same way the "excitement" about grunge was not the same when Korn (and others) came around. My point was just that there are still bands that bring excitement to the "kids" . The "problem" is that their level of "success" and "impact" is nothing like the "old days". But that dosen't mean that bands are no good. You are "speaking" about a time when internet ( and so many more stuff) wasn't a thing and when rock/metal music was the main genre in music charts. The times are not the same, it isn't fair to compare now with then. So, its hard for a band to make sucsess and impact like GnR had.

But again, that dosen't mean it is the same like it used to be. In some ways, rock/metal music return to roots, that means it lives on the underground (again).

Ross was afraid some of the band members would die from their partying and addictions at the time with the drinking and drugs. Don't get me wrong i was a huge fan after Follow the Leader came out even i was like they are living life on the edge.
I was in a nu-metal band, we were called "dUnCe kAP cOrNeR" i played bass, in our band photo im kinda overweight and i have a dog collar and a long white button up shirt with the top button buttoned. i liked funkdoobiest but i started smoking crack at 19, by 2008 everybody in my band was overweight and also addicted to crack, We garnered a bad reputation of robbing and fighting other bands, myself and my guitarist Jezter, got arrested in 2009 for beating up the singer of "Protus" and his girlfriend after a show in Huntington Beach, our last show. anyway i hope ross robinson will one day listen to our demo and consider releasing it. ive been out of jail for 15 months, served 10.5 years, clean from crack, ready to rock!

Isn't he! You wouldn't think he is the name behind all the super fucking good bands that I grew up with because he's so just chill. Oh & throwing shit at Cory & Joey (I'm thinking) lol. Guy didn't seem like he's got an aggressive bone in his body. Gotdammit, he's good though, he's as special as the bands.
I feel like Korn lost touch with those first two albums as the years rolled on. They speak about those songs now like they are lesser versions of what they are putting out today, criticising the songs for not having choruses and starting a movement that they later came to resent. What was captured on Korns first four albums will never be captured again. Ross had a huge influence on their early success. He thought them how to groove and how to be different. I think on their most recent album The Nothing they sound watered down, over produced and lacking in terms of new creative ideas. The early 90s was a great time for music and I think Slipknot are the only band that still maintain the grit and rawness of their first two albums.

So.. I agree. Those albums are killer. Life is peachy is easily my favorite album followed by self titled... but my 3rd favorite is serenity of suffering. That album is killer. I didn't like alot of the korn albums while Head was gone but he truly brought the korn sound back with him. Serenity and The nothing both rock hard.

@@SUNIKIGAMING My own opinion is when Head returned they started to sound like a band trying to sound like Korn. In some ways I think Heads return halted Jonathan’s creativity and albums were made for nostalgic reasons and not to push the band forward into unexplored territories. That said, I know at one stage Head and Munky wanted to explore the idea of dropping Korns tuning and Jonathan rejected this idea. Korn are certainly a tighter band than they were without Head, but I still think too many core elements of their early sound are missing on the last three albums. What made them stand out to me was their groove and amazing ability to write the most unique guitar riffs and melodies. While I still think Munky is quite an interesting guitar player, I think Head collaborated with a lot of bands and musicians who were influenced by Korn, and somehow everything has come full circle into a very watered down, unimaginative version of early Korn. Don’t get me wrong, I do not want Korn to recreate those first four albums. I just think it’s time they explored the idea of getting in a room with someone who could drive them forward as a band and remove some of the bad habits they have picked up over their career. I’m not into this second generation, uninspiring 00s nu metal version of Korn. Leave that to the bands that were influenced by Korn. I don’t think Ross will work with them again because they’re not hungry or challenged enough as a band to create something raw and emotional, but there are a lot of producers out there who could get them to do something a lot more interesting than the last three albums. Just my opinion. I know a lot of younger fans love the new stuff.

the thing with those first 4 korn albums is they didn't use a click track. They actually sounded like that in real life, flowing and groovy. Like humans
Now I don't know for sure, but it feels like Ray probably plays to a metronome in the studio. He may or may not be quantized by the engineers but I tell ya, it sounds lifeless.

For those saying he solely created Nu Metal, it wasn't just him. Korn and Ross created a unique sound. Then many other bands were inspired by the image and sound, and so, this very different genre became very sought after and was eventually considered "Nu Metal".
Definitely Korn were the pioneers. There are a lot of other bands that korn took inspiration from, but they just made it their own. But without a doubt, KoRn existed before Ross found them, and even after Ross left, Korn continued to trailblaze, and their consistency in releasing music as well as non stop experimentation, is what has gotten them on such a high mantle. Their sound was always unique, each one of them contributed a lot! But I think mainly, it was Jonathan Davis's lyrical bravery that truly stood out.
Eddie Vedder and Johnathan Davis arent comparable. Love them both as vocalists but they don't sound even remotely alike, c'mon now.
He is probably referring to the singing through their teeth that they both use to do.
He said there was no one who could compare to Jonathan Davis vocals, the only one who could come close to compare is Eddie Vedder at that time during the 90's, which Vedder has some intense lyrics and obscure ways of singing, which makes sense because at that time there really was no other band that could compare to Korn's energy and music driven talent.
