- Producer Ross Robinson brings life to the dead.
Dubbed the “godfather of nü-metal,” his raw, unvarnished production on albums by KoЯn, Slipknot, and Sepultura redefined heavy metal by stripping away the glitz and glamour of hair bands still partying on the Sunset Strip in favor of a new sound marked by anger, intensity, and honesty... The singular universal truth that Ross Robinson has continually rediscovered is that nothing stays the same. Not our bodies, not this earth, not this galaxy, none of it will last as it is right now.
"I can depend 100% on my ideas, thoughts and opinions changing," Robinson says, taking a momentary breather from capturing another raw performance at his home / studio. "I'm basically a constant liar because if I think I know something, I'm lying, although at the time, I really believe it."
And thus Robinson has arrived at what may be the pinnacle of recording music and perhaps life itself: the moment. Ross is in constant fluid motion, working feverishly to get musicians to lose themselves in the moment. To forget whatever might be on their mind, to lose focus in order to gain focus. It is, frankly, what Ross is known for. "I'm constantly trying to get people to not think," he explains.

First two Slipknot records sound fucking massive, major props to Ross for that. Plus he's the man responsible for the "Gimme a scream, Corey! YEEEAAAAAAH!!!" exchange on Get This.
you will love redeemer from norma jean, trust me. produced by ross. same brutal vocals. top notch grossy mixing.
From the stories I've heard about Ross, he's like the Gordon Ramsay of music producers. Super chill, nice guy that's fun to be around when not recording. But once you're in the studio, he's a fucking nightmare.
And I fucking love it.
I can imagine. All the same I think I'd prefer that to having Phil Spector waving a gun around!
Ross seems to be legendary for pushing musicians to their physical and emotional limits and then taking it an extra mile. Every record he records is mixed well obviously, but theres also an emotional intensity in the tracks that many records lack. The man makes great records.
totally! the vocal performances on those records are unreal
There are stories of him pushing members of Glassjaw and At the Drive in to the edge with his emotional manipulation, for example telling the recently bereaved drummer of one to play the kick like it was keeping his Grandmother's heart going.
This guy’s energy and passion that he gives off: no wonder why the 1st albums of Korn, Limp, and SK were so intense...
This dude is on another plane of reality. He's talking about universes and shit. This video should be longer for such a legend.
For sure man
Yeah I wanted to hear more of him.
@Matt G Unless he's on acid on every interview he does then I doubt it. He's always like that.
It got to a point back when I was a teenager buying albums just cause his name was on it. Dude is a legend. The second glassjaw album and the Atdi record are two of my favorites ever.
Ross is 100% ~ 100% Legend
100% Agree
I’ve always loved what RR brings to the party - those early nu-metal albums really ‘formed’ me as a kid. Slipknot’s ‘IOWA’ is still one of my all-time favourite metal albums. I don’t think you can get much better from a raw, recorded performance than that.
Oh man...that mic is something special. Jonathan Davis belted out the beginning words of Blind, Corey probably screamed Disasterpiece into that mic, Robert Smith glorified that mic, etc. even little things can be treasured.
man, the Microphone costs about 35000 bucks and it is second hand.
I love the way he talks. It's just one continuous stream of consciousness with this pantameter that sounds just like music.
Thanks for checking out the video Louie! 'Ppreciate it
Korn self-titled & Slipknot self-titled sound loud, huge, clear and raw. What a legend
There's also self-titled Soulfly album
That's a Wes Borland painting at 5:54. Great gift.
Ross is an absolute legend and pioneer. respect
What he did with Korn alone, my god, makes him a legend. I love his voice, too :)
Absolutely. He even produced their demo for the band Creep around 1992, which was their band name before they found JD and created Korn. Most real Korn fans know about Creep, L.A.P.D, and Sexart though so I'm sure you know about Creep.
what a legend, one of the first producers that really got me attention way back when i was a kid
This series is just absolutely mega. Love it.
glad you are loving it. Subscribe for more!
From First to Last will only ever be remembered for being shrillex first stop in his music journey. 💀
The men behind magic sound...that make Korn so unique Untitled and Life is peachy thanks Ross...!!!!
Always loved his old school sound. Dude had a signature stamp on all his recordings
This series makes me hopeful about rock again. It's still alive!
I don't think I've checked in with this guy since the late 90's and I was shocked at how old he looks.
Then I checked the date and we're talking a good twenty years ago.
Time really does fly.
It's a pleasue to been shown around such a prolific producer's studio.
Sepultura's album "roots" Korn's first and best album in my opinion and so Slipknot' first album..I meant, what else can you ask for?Ross is a lagend!
He also produced "Iowa" by Slipknot
He also worked with Deftones on their earlier songs and produced Glassjaw's first 2 albums. Amazing producer.
he also did limp bizkit’s first album three dollar bill y’all
@@ohYex + two brutal norma jean records. redeemer is really chaotic insanity. just these vocals on that album are another level. redeemer has best mix i ever fucking heard, thx to his skill...
@@DavidS-kz7ik Song..Fist
This is the guy who pushed Jonathan to cry in Who then Now video. Best Album ever. And i live in Indonesia. Thats how far his work travel and changes a kid's life
TheDanielDeo to be fair, I don’t think it’s that hard to push Jon to cry lol. But yes, his work will always travel far, as amazing work does
Not to mention the guy responsible for Corey puking and going insane on the first slipknot album.
Rich Robb Ross was a producer who was capable of pushing you to do your best to the point of blood, sweat, tears, and in Slipknot’s case, vomit. So glad this guy pushed so many artists, without his help we wouldn’t have Korn or Slipknot made it into the nu metal era. “Just go and go until the craving is satisfied.”
RR produced Burn, Piano Island, Burn, one of the best albums ever. Some of the dopest sounds I’ve ever heard.
a milestone in hardcore
The Gene Hoglan story/painting!!!
Awesome!!! RR is one of my favorite producers/engineers! Worship and Tribute by Glassjaw, Redeemer by Norma Jean, Relationship of Command by ATD-I are some of my absolutely favorite sounding albums!
THAT REDEEMER REFERENCE. People seems to not forget about that record, omg.!
love you ross best goddamn nu metal godfather man!
Gene was a revelation on the drums - giving 1000% on the tubs from day one. He could be playing a mid-week middle band on a 3 band bill at a half empty skid row bar here in Vancouver - and, play his kit like he was a multi-limbed jackhammer
AT THE DRIVE IN!!! one the best bands ever
He has Leonard Cohen's "The Future" breath captured in a box. 😂❤
Nice!!
Music is a life form. And it likes to feed off of Earthquaker Devices...
So rad. Definitely my favorite producer.
Mad respect for this guy.
ATDI.. man that band changed me.
I like how he keeps thr albums he produces raw even if im not a nu metal fan he does a great job getting energrtic peformences out of the bands he records he has great bass tones especially on roots that is one of the best bass tones ever
I love this series! This is one of my favorite episodes. Your whole channel is rad as fuck
Ross thanks for all your music creations!!! send my love! ;)
I am so happy to hear someone use the term "tough" from my childhood! Meaning great!
Frank Green tuff
Revolutionary
been 10 years since i was i that studio. Epic memories.
That was amazing! I could listen to his stories all day..
Ross are a Legend producer!!
So awesome... he produced some of my favorite albums. So cool to see what his work process is like
I would absolutely love to meet and hang with Ross one day. He captured everything I love about music all in one with whatever he produced. He knows how to pull it out of someone and show them they are better than what they think of themselves. If that makes any sense. Fuck it , only two of you will actually read this 🤷♂️🤘
I read it twice, if that counts.
Amazing!
Still my favorite producer. If i will ever make an long list of why i love so many albums with his touch, it will be so fucking detailed. I've learned so much about production, music and how to feel it through, thx to his attitude. I wish that i can talk with him about music, omg. So sad it will never come true..
1:50 this claim still stands, first two Slipknot albums have not been topped yet by the band (they never would anyway) or any other. The anger, the darkness, the intensity, the sound. I've been searching for years to find something that can top IOWA...to no avail.
"anybody that's drifting.. Get a lil HIT" Fucking love him so much
i'd pay good money for that gene hoglan painting, what a drummer!
I don't understand why someone who loves music can ever think a genre is dead
Ross Robinson Legend
hoglans a beast drummer, he played with so many legendary metal groups
Thanks to Ross for Vanilla Ice Hard to swallow album!
I own that cd 💿
Gotta love that the first thing he pulls is a ten thousand dollar microphone.
And he keeps it in the BATHROOM! I lost it there. Haha
you never know when inspiration will strike and bathrooms have great natural reverb! just don't drop it in the toilet.
Ross Robinson in the music industry is like Quentin Tarantino in the film industry.
Wouldn't be here without his work
My hero.
This man Ross Robbinsin is a fucking genius
low-key knuckle dragger vinyl - respect to Ross
All time favorite dude
That! Was awesome.
Thanks for watching AJ!
Absolute best in the game
turns out the $10,000 mic is awesome
It’s paid for itself once or twice. lol
Wished this was longer, this man is very interesting
this was awesome
Tracking 14 songs with Ross would be the absolute crowning achievement of my entire life. I could die fulfilled.
watch out for flying flowerpots
@@EarthQuakerDevices thank you. I will.
Legend
God blessed you
I remember when Fred introduced me to Ross at Dante's Purgatory in Jacksonville, FL as the fella who was going to produce their first album and thinking to myself he didn't look anything like the guys who were producing music in the north FL area at the time.
He was capable of pushing the Slipknot guys to tears, what a maniac he must be
I have the EarthQuaker Palisades! Love it!
This could’ve been three times as long.
That dog looks so chill
Wish Glassjaw and him would work something out so we could see the video tape the Everything you ever wanted to know about Silence sessions. I know Im dreaming on that. They have pretty much written that album off due to the bad experiences with RoadRunner Records. Still, It would be sick to 👀
Dude needs to make some audiobooks, i could listen to his stories all day long
so cool!
Amazing
This is turning out to be a great series... this one espaitially Thanx so much and... okay, okay I'm subscibing
Thank you Jonny!
That dude has heard some amazing jams
Give me a scream Corey !
Wes Borland painting behind the monitors
You re a man of culture aswell
First thing I spotted
This guy is a genius, that's why he is so crazy.
Ross produced the soundtrack of my life in my 20s. some of the best shit I've ever heard was produced by him
that intro was awesome good job
thanks!
5:32 Joey’s mask ❤
That story about Gene Hoglan is so god damn funny! Ross Robinson is a true legend.
Wow. Inspiring. And very well edited.
i just go and go until the craving is satisfied 2:03

Meshuggapeth Its the "Hidden Track" on Adrenaline after the last track, Fireal.
jeez i diddn't realize how much this guy did.
I love this series so much!. Man.. I haven't seen Ross R interview since early 2000s... Almost didn't recognize him 😁
Check out 'Sound City' from 2012. Some great nuggets there, too.
music genius
totally. thanks for watching!
I met him a few times, really cool dude.
I love, love, love my boutique pedals. They play a very intricate part in my music but it's easy for my to get carried away to the point where my guitar sounds like a space ship
master
What the first song this video, please?
Head Wound City!!! Fu©k yeah!!!
Douglas Plaisance fuckkk yeahhh
That's Zenith by DeathCrawl at the intro right?
