- Korn's discography is filled to the brim with chunky, groovy, rubber-band-snapping guitar riffs. They're a quintessential part of the Bakersfield alt-metal crew's sound, and while they're by no means the most brutal band in the world, guitarists James "Munky" Shaffer and Brian "Head" Welch have written some seriously crushing parts over the last 30 years. Because they know better than anyone else, we asked them to choose the 11 heaviest riffs in their catalog and explain what makes each one so physically forceful. The guys went deep, choosing songs that span their entire career and offering up tons of trivia about each pick.

This is why I always loved them. They’re not pretentious music theory nerds. Just a couple dorks from Bakersfield who love a chunky guitar lick. Considering their long and storied past it’s good to see them staying so down to earth.
So many metal bands are so caught up in "making good riffs" that they miss out on the base, primal aspect that makes for great heavy guitar. A lot of Korn riffs are just basic low open strings and dissonant intervals, but they've got groove and atmosphere in spades. Plus they actually do get into some surprisingly experimental territory, the droning textures on Dead Bodies Everywhere (behind the creepy music box riff) are all guitar through a talkbox but it totally sounds like some kind of synth.
@NoEsUnUA-camr Yep. I've been saying this for years. Too many guitarists overthink guitar and try to play TOO MANY NOTES. It's not that hard. But everybody keeps trying to one up riffs and ends up making them too complicated.
@@JesusChrist2000BC I actually despise people who think that unless you're playing some 300bpm sweep picking riff that it's not good. Playing that fast or cramming that many notes in doesn't mean you're good. It just means you're fast.😂

Korn has such a signature sound. Fieldys base almost sounds like drums. I was hooked the very first time I heard them
It's what led me to bass guitars. I asked my friend at the time who had introduced me to Korn wtf was that clicky noise.

How did you not put "Blind" on the list. I will never forget, 14 years old, the record had just come out & my buddy comes flying in the house goes to the stereo, puts the tape in & says "dude... listen to this.." Ride cymbal, nah nah nah nah ... and then the guitar riff and the "are you ready?!?!?!?!" that made my brain explode. I was absolutely hooked from that second. I searched everywhere in town for a seven string guitar, but could never find one so I got some heavy ass strings & played a six string tuned down to A. That is still to this day one of the heaviest things I have ever heard & just watch video of any show when that part comes in... Absolute mayhem. Saw them with Ozzy on New Years Eve 1994/5 at McNichols Arena in Denver, which is no longer, at the Mammoth Event Center, which is no longer, the Ogden Theater which is still there. So many shows, so many years & so much great music. Thanks guys, you helped to change my life forever.
"Lies" "Predictable" "clown" and "dead bodies everywhere" are some of my favorites. They go hard.
Predictable may be the heaviest riff ever written period.

The bridge version of Good God's riff is such a kick in the balls that I instantly have a need to thrash my surroundings whenever I hear it. The Hating's riff is also super brutal, Right Now is a one giant clusterf*ck of heaviness, but my favourite is definitely the heavier main riff of It's On.

Head & Munky go together like Peanut Butter & Jelly, these guys are made to play guitar together.
Korn's music is aging very well. Seeing them live is a fantastic and energetic experience. I'd recommend anyone go see them while they are still young.

Korn is one of the darkest, heaviest, most unique and musically talented bands on the planet. It’s amazing because many people who hear Korn it sounds horrible. I think that’s what makes it even better.
When it comes to music, the only thing that matters is how I feel about it. Never cared much about what other people think.
The pre chorus riff in Blind is incredibly heavy and is pure funk at the same time. One of my favorite Korn moments
For me Ball Tongue is one of the heaviest but melodic riffs I've ever heard, it never gets old. I love the bridge exchange between these two in Got the Life and yes... I saw the South Park!

These guys are pretty cool, I get a sense that they don't get enough credit as pioneers, they brought a new type of heaviness into metal and then a lot of genres got inspired and did their thing

There 1st album will always be my favorite. I still listen to it.
Ball Tongue has got to have one of the greatest intros to any metal song in history. You can just feel the energy inside building up.
And freak on a leash has the best build up to drop, mid song. Honestly the entire thing is just the perfect song imo.
Intro for Blind will always be the heaviest to me, hands down.
Solid riffs. Surprised they didn't put Here To Stay on there. Or the intro to Swallow. Whew. What a riff!
Swallow is a good riff. If you listen to Cold from The Nothing album, it sounds like Swallow just re-worked a bit in my opinion! I cover both of those songs on guitar and they are pretty much the same notes. I believe Swallow is one of the few Korn songs though that is tuned down a half step, most of the time they are tuned down a whole step.
It was their favorite, not our favorite. I'd probably pick 11 different things entirely - they have so many heavy riffs and moments to pick from.
That's what I watched the vid to see, if Swallow was on. That sounds almost like a meshuggah riff lol.

The powerful energy in Korn’s riffs is so powerful and earth shaking. I describe a live Korn show as like standing on top of the San Andreas Fault during an earthquake.
One of my favorite riffs isn’t mentioned here the intro to Dead Bodies Everywhere. It’s Head’s part where the Whammy pedal is shelved all the way up to where it sounds like a creepy music box combined with Munky’s talk box part. And then they just immediately switch to that super heavy sludgy riff. That’s like an underrated fan favorite.
This group was my entire teenage experience in the early/mid 90's...I saw them at the first family values tour and still remember it like it was yesterday....and now I'm 40 haha. Such a revolutionary band who laid the foundation for many after them. #muchrespect

I heard Korns first album in the 5th grade. My older sisters apartment burned down and her roommates copy of the cassette was one of the only things that survived. After listening to that it changed music for me forever
These guys blew minds when they first broke out. Very original sound.
I would like to add something from Untouchables, which I think is one of their heaviest albums. Especially with songs like Here to Stay, Bottled Up Inside or Beat it Upright.

Korn is a RIFFS band…hard to narrow it down to a top 11, but Untouchables has some of their top riffs for sure
The original S/T album & "Untouchables" are my 2 favourite Korn albums. I'm a bit perplexed as to why they didn't mention anything from "Untouchables". 🤔

Kinda surprised blind wasn’t on here? It’s like the intro to all that came after and it’s like the defining sound that led to all the rest of these songs. That was the perfect opener to the album that made all this possible.
Also ass itch needs more love, it really is one of the most intense songs I’ve heard, especially the ending. Life is peachy had such a unique vibe to it. It was maxed out heavy but also ethereal and relaxing in a way. They really did a great job finding new sounds and new ways to be heavy considering how blown out on drugs they were. But sometimes it’s that period where bands are in their 20s and taking all the drugs that they end up making something that intense and passionate. Not saying to do drugs but that seems to be a reoccurring theme for many bands. Once they get big and sober up they start making material that is “expected” instead of coming up with something straight from their soul because their heart was in it and they were doing it because they truly wanted to and were just having fun doing what they loved.

after being a fan for decades, this short video is so valuable, its rare to connect with you both on such a human level. your music has penetyrated nthe depths of our souls and i personally have always wanted to know you all better, , after all anyone who could make music like this has gotten to be from the same world as i and all of us.

I’ve seen KoRn live 5 times and I myself get a little disinterested when they play that song. But when they get to that heavy part, I’m always reminded of why I loved that song as a young teen.

"No way" is my favorite song from Issues. One of their heaviest and darkest korn songs and needless to say very underrated.

Blind was the perfect intro to the band and the genre they pioneered. Like "are you ready" for a sound you've never heard before. First time I heard that was the moment I fell in love with music.

Old school Korn fan here... all the songs on the list are deserving but I would add
Shoots And Ladders middle part, open riff to Lies, Kick the P.A. w/the Dust Bros. , Jingle Balls, middle part in Need To, It’s Me Again - the whole Fn song!, outro riff to Oildale, Justin, the first distorted guitars in Kill You (FUCK, the sick guitar tone, Korn at its finest), the prechorus to Bottled Up Inside and not Korn but Love & Death (Head’s side project) the middle part to Paralyzed (Fn heavy shit right there!!!) Head is an amazing vocalists in his own right, just saying. Fn Korn!!! So good!
Rotting in Vain became a favorite of my, it has a special place in my heart. Because i totally lost the taste of Korn for a long time, right about 2009/10 and never listened another hit...
Came back in 2020, and the first track i've took was Rotting in Vain. My god, the heavyness on that one is amazing. Never again, im never leaving them again.

Untouchables is the heaviest korn album in my opinion.
i think it's very underrated.
Right, but their sound grew pretty stagnant on that album. I remember even Chino Moreno called them out after they released that album and kind of trashed them!

My favorite all time riff from KoRn has to be after the chill droning bridge in Dead Bodies Everywhere.. some serious 7 string work on that part and probably my favorite KoRn song of all time!

This is the absolute best, and what I love to see most of all! It's so cool and rare to hear what the band members actually think, and either love or not so much, or their own music! Sometime's I try to imagine the mind numbing monotony they must experience after playing some of these songs so many THOUSANDS or maybe TENS OF THOUSANDS of times through the years. All be it they are rock stars, and we love them to the fullest, and they are compensated generously of course! Still they must get sick of these songs some times, so I think it is so cool to hear what songs (or riffs from songs) they still get excited about! I love Korn and I hope they never quit this!!
They're truly incredible playing together! They've had some of the greatest riffs ever! Korn rocks!
You guys literally got me through high-school. Every morning on the hour long bus ride to school and and the hour long bus ride home. It was me and my disk man. My parents bought sooooo many batteries for me. Pantera was there too...... but life's peachy..... that CD was as important as my kids are today. Thank you for your hard work and please keep it up.

Corn was always about the Guitar Buddy bromance. Whether it be chug chug noise, or the typical , speak and then answer, type riffs. I remember I was 11 years old when I heard the first Korn album coming out of my sister's room. The second I heard I heard that sheer heaviness, as well as, the absolute bone dry contemporary tuned kit, it was a milestone breakthrough in music history and changed a lot of things. They were so simple yet so genuinely honest and thoughtful. Thanks boys
