The best thing about Thile playing with jazz guys (Mehldau, Lage) is that they never play what sounds like jazz. It's something much more interesting and beyond all cliche. This is like nothing I've ever heard. A genre unto itself without being difficultly idiosyncratic. The original song is there, too, in all its Radioheadish dark swirling beauty.
thats how they are going to interpret the song at that moment. how can people not understand? sometimes people wanna just fucking tear their instrument apart getting it out. this is what i see. i see 2 guys jamming out. if you cannot pick up on what they are doing musically, pay no attention. it just means it went right over your pretty little head. if you see only "showing off" then that only tells me about yourself lol. all you people talking bullshit, go learn how to play MUSIC first.
While I agree, a lot of notes can be too much. This is Thile and Mehldau playing Radiohead, not Radiohead playing Radiohead; bearing in mind their reputations, I wouldn't expect any less.
The modern-day equivalents of, say, J.S. Bach or Mozart perhaps? The word "genius" gets thrown around a lot these days, but I think these two are well deserving of the label.
pwitte777 I agree. There’s something special about the short-and-sweet nature of a Radiohead song like this. The only plus I would say as that they kind of unpack the despair of the song and explore it. It helps me to think of it that way anyway
Well who doesn't like maturbating? ... and pretentious isn't quite right. That's for people who are faking it... "pretending" at skill they don't have. Highbrow is maybe what you mean but I can't be sure. Thile is a great mandolin player, maybe the greatest in the world but his is not his best stuff. This is just him having fun in a live setting. His best work is either with Mike Marshall or Michael Daves.
I like Brad, and I will have to search for more of Chris, but I don't believe that Brad has heard this song before in his life. Still turned out good, though, being jazz!
I know that he's an accomplished mandolin player. I don't agree with "highbrow" either. This is showing off. This is re-inventing the wheel. It's taking something that was already beautiful and amazing, and making it more complicated than it needs to be, thus failing in retaining said beauty.
People hating on this are out of their god damned minds.
What in this world could ever make them in their minds...
Brad has an out-of the -world ability to play piano like an orchestra.
everything about this video is so effin amazing, Brad Mehldau, Chris Thile and Radiohead.... I love Brad for loving Radiohead
Jawdropping, staggeringly beautiful. Wow, just wow!

I mean, holy shit to have been there for this
Love this, from first time hearing and seeing!
Thank You very much for sharing!
The chromatic harmony and changes remind me of Piazzolla and Threadgill.
Brad covers Radiohead all the time, and his cover of Knives Out with his trio is the first track of his 2005 album Day is Done.
it's like i wasn't able to breath for 12 minutes
Everything he does is breathtaking!
Wonderful. Brad out there, once again. Thanks for sharing,
This is too damn good.
Thank you so much for sharing! I wish I could have been there!
Thanks a bunch ive just finished the studying of Irish buzuki! And love mehldau piano style too!

Duo album, out January 27, 2017, nonesuch records!

I'm in love with both of them. I want us to be a hot jazz sandwich.

I think you should hear more of Brad, he has fine great versions of this! Check out his trio!
Thile Kowert and some other players need to cover There There. That's one of my favorite live performances by RH.
Holy shit whos the guy who has the direct board out recording of this?
5:52 is unreal
@crushed241
do you have more? this is beautiful
Wow....
hot damn! that breakdown around 5:10!!
First time ive ever seen anyone sing with Brad.

Bach and Mehldau piano duo would be insane
Are you really comparing these to to Bach and Mozart? Please stop
@@Chris-is1rd Lol
The more I know, the less I understand!
This was THREE WEEKS AGO? How did I not get the gig invite? I was looking for something to see that week too. Boo on the new media skills, Brad.
Pretty...
Well, Radiohead did compose this.
sui generis! frack off!
Love Mehldau, Thile, and Radiohead but I feel the virtuosity of their playing overwhelms the beauty of the song at times.

Boo
[whispered at the beginning] "Knives Out!!!" . . . "Shut. up."
no doubt he's a big fan of Tom Yorke..

Brad play this song since 2005 when he recorded it in his record day is done.
Look, while I agree with your stance, I think you're being extremely ridiculous. Grow up man, no need to get so angry here. Stop needling

Now 5 years have passed... have you changed your mind yet? Lol :)
