he is such an unorthodox drummer, so much fun listening to him...
My sentiments, exactly. How wonderfully strange and different!
This recording will remain in the history of jazz. it must be said that everything Ari uploads to his channel is of a mind-blowing quality. I often go back to listen to this pearl and it's always the same emotion, thank you very much.
Without the drums, bass, guitar, piano and sax it'd just be nothing.
Music would be nothing without Instruments, you fool! !! It is a free Interpretation of the Theme
Great! !!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Lmaoooo
So true homie
Thankfully there was some air in the room that night
Hi Everyone. Thanks for listening! I’m doing a video explaining all the things that I played in this version. It’s called Billy’s Bounce explained and will be available in April exclusively on my Patreon.
Ari.. can you ask the other guys in the band to do a similar explanation too? haha... I start the recording halfway through, it doesn't sound like a blues, and it's amazing! Would love to understand the approach better.
@@oejdhd did you watch my explanation video already?
@AriHoenig Sorry I assumed it would be a percussion/rhythm focused video instead of harmony, based on the above comment saying "things that I played in this version." I will go back to April in Patreon. Thanks to you 🙏
1:53 lift off! The melody being played on drums gave me goosebumps!
Never heard anything like this in my life.
Verity little ego and total commitment to the music. A master at work.... So good
And also not afraid to venture off the beaten path of the jazz standard .... Great
I'm 83 a drummer and still do Jazz gigs. These polytyhems are basically what Jazz drummers have been doing for decades. This is especially true in BeBop which being most popular in late 40s through to early 60s required the drummer to solo musically often mimmicing the instruments. Listen to Stanley Turentine's Sugar here in UA-cam and you'll hear the opening bars where the drums follow the keys. Philly Joe Jones played musical breaks all the time. And many polyrhythms are based on African or Latin rhythms. I learned them from day one in the 50s and still use them in our Jazz trio as I have Bongos incorporated directly into my kit. One method I use is to switch up the patterns during the number but still staying in time.
I find that most drummers who grew up playing Rock have no knowlege of even basic Latin beats. Also many have never played Jazz so when they try they still lay down a Rock pattern with steady back beat in snare in 2-4. Listen to the snare in this and you'll see that the left hand varies greatly with buzz rolls, triplets etc. And as for the word polyrhythm ... mmm... we just played them as that word was foreign.
I love Ari's playing, he always looks like he's chasing bugs across his kit, and always getting them!
The one dislike is from the stick he dropped trying to get its revenge
4:54 just gold:D
Even if its the first time you hear Ari's band(s) play, you'll never forget it, and always remember who he is... fascinating rhythm!
After 5 years of jazz drumming and records this performance is still over my head in terms of form, polyrhythm and overall musical mind reading
You will be very lucky/accomplished if this isn't over your head in 15 more years.
Both of you would understand if you just practice and learn about the music.
@@jonasmartinsen3439 so explain what’s happening for the people that don’t understand. Instead of bringing someone else down.
absolutely my favorite jazz drummer, so much fun to watch. the way he approaches the drum kit as being a tonal instrument by using his arms to manipulate the heads. Unbelievable stuff. Great video.
Sax: Tivon Pennicott
Piano: Eden Ladin
Bass: Noam Wiesenberg
Guitar: Gilad Hekselman
No idea the drummer?

Outstanding! Such a fresh arrangement, super tight!

Thank god I get a chance to listen to this before I die
Man I love this video. Your other video from Smalls playing Softly As In A Morning Sunrise is incredible too. Probably the best version of that tune I've ever heard
That was magical.
When I want to watch this video, you just uploaded 6/27 in Japan time. Thank you so much! I am jazz drummer and pianist in Japan. I love your music feeling.
What a great drummer and enormous interaction of that band! Thanks for sharing - Axel
Love it
I am hooked. this is incredible!
A Clock with Smiles! Thanks and Blessings, this was a treat!

Awesome, looking forward to seeing them in Dublin in November. 👍
wow! melodies on the drums........wow!
Ari, you’re the man. You fill me with so much adoration and energy. I hope to someday be 1/16th of the drummer you are.
This session blew my mind, it's truly fascinating! You are a inspiration for a new generation of musicians.
Awesome!
So. Wry nice Nice ! Wish we had a Small in West Palm Beach ! Awesome ! Thanks Josh !

Súper Ari!!!!( ...his band too👍)
Uit de oude doos, maar prachtig! Dank je wel. Mooie zingende drums! Leuk om de bassist in de spiegel te zien :) Geweldige interacties!!
Freaking awesome! Keep that hi-hat goin' even if you stretch it here and there!! Beautiful!
This Drummin', keep me young and fresh!

Super drumming 😉

Ari & group. Just WOW. Thank you all. Hey Ari- please do tell… you and Keith Carlock have same teacher, influential catalyst and or hang out together? You sir are an amazing drummer. Thx again. d
so sick
Ainda bem que voltou kkkk
El tipo es distinto a todo lo que se haya visto. Y tiene una independización de las extremidades fuera del alcance de cualquier mortal. Ari, de ahora en más eres uno de mis favoritos.
she'll be coming around the mountain when she comes!!!
these guys are nuts
That was a journey!
yes
Damn dude..... This guy's on fire
fire!!!!
this gives me strength
Almost forgot to listen to this today.
YAAAAAAAAASSS!!! HOTT 2 DEF!! 💥
4:45
goosebumps, and Ari's face :D
I took it the head, instant kill xD
brutal!
These guys are all rhythm wizards just fooling around and acting like kids while making it sound awesome and great at the same time! I think that's what playing music is all about once you're at this level of musicianship
Some happening shit!! Beautiful playing Ari!!!!!❤
7:34 nice!
16:24 Omg, that was clean.
Wow! That's some very melodic drumming. Unique style too. Your body appears so stiff but hands and feet are flowing effortlessly. (although effort is definitely present in your performance)
🤯
I now expect him to retune his drums for every song!
I mean, he kinda does.
Man!!!! 🤙🤙🤙
The drummer is crazy
"Don't mind me, I just gotta put these dishes in the dishwasher "....
🎶🎶
No no, este tipo es tan exacto, es imposible igualarlo, cómo llego a ese nivel en la batería?
💛💙😃
Tivon Pennicott @ 3:48-50 quoting Coltrane's 'Pent Up House'.
@@ViziaFilms I stand corrected! That's right! Sonny Rollins. I actually hear other motifs/quotes like @ 7:16 - 7:35/36 for example, but the name escapes me right now.
4:30-5:00. Damn!!!
Wow! AH really use the elements of rhythm and melody. This is a 12 bar blues and maybe more open for experiments but still....
Epic moment
Sweet jesus
Anyone have any big jazz performances on youtube they recommend?
Amazing!
But i don't get it, feels like really dark grey :k
Charle Parker at 00:54
11:30
8:31
I'm pretty sure I pissed my pants when he started playing the melody of the tune on the drums
Very
0:13 Did he just play Grieg's "Au Matin" ?
Hall of the mountain king, but grieg, yes 🙂
4:33 and 8:10 lesson
1:10 What tune is that melody from again?
She’ll be comin round the mountain
damn, they must practice a lot. hard to follow the beat ! they're all metronomes.
Follow the hihat!!!
@@drumduder sometimes he was comping on the hat too I love it
That’s ridiculous but true
Maybe that sounds like a heresy, but I definately would like to see Ari with one more tom and even a double bass xD.
Awesome, but if you guys ever get to the head, you better play it twice!
