- Jazz piano prodigy Joey Alexander plays Round Midnight by Thelonious Monk and Cootie Williams at the 2014 Jazz at Lincoln Center gala. Introduction by Billy Crystal.
After reading the NY Times article today about this young man, I couldn't wait to see and hear the various You Tube videos that are available by little Joey Alexander. Like Billy Chrystal said, every time he plays "Round Midnight" he plays it differently. He's got incredible chops, and plays with a great variety of styles within the same piece.This comes with a great understanding of harmony and syncopation which a mature jazz pianist would acquire after years of playing. For a 10 year old to play with this is really beyond extraordinary. Being a pianist and piano teacher myself, I can't wait to hear him when he gets older. Truly wonderful.
His Interpretation of Monk's "Round Midnight" is all his own..I usually don't post on youtube but this little musical titan has got me mesmerized to the point I want to hear all his work, buy his music, when is he playing nearby etc...Little Chick Corea
Something that continues to impress me about him is that he never shies away from the bottom half to the keyboard. It's a place a lot of people (or just I) tend to avoid because it's easy to muddy and it's hard to hear the nice tensions you can create with closed voicings but Joey navigates it PERFECTLY. He redistributes tension in such a measured and authentic way, and he mines the melancholy in a place where few others can go. And all this at 10! I can't wait for more from this young man as he blossoms into one of the greatest to ever do it.

What joey is showing complete understanding of the pieces he plays. He's inside, all around and part of the composition. Fabulous talent and such a nice young man, so modest and genuine!
Joey Alexander first touched a keyboard at the age of 6. Here, only 4 years later, he's a master pianist on the world stage mesmerizing some of the world's finest jazz musicians at the age of 10. Joey is a miracle. What you see here is impossible.

I like to imagine the big jazz players like Davis and Coltrane (and Monk of course) reacting to Joey on the stage. Wide eyed, jaw dropped, shocked.

Kind of trembling when I heard the host described who is Joey and where he's from, and in a very young age, Joey actually deliver the language of music in the most beautiful way!
it's as if the Masters of Piano speak though him...gives me chills and tears...
I can't seem to get enough Joey Alexander. His playing always brings me up and things are challenging, I can just listen to the magic of Joey and feel good.

To listen how he plays by heart like that really hit my stomach so hard. it was a beautiful play from a 10 year old kids, i believe even a professional will be wonder how he did that. and lincoln center!!!
He makes me happy, and he makes a lot of people happy; beyond the truly xtraordinary jazz chops, which defy what "ought to be possible" this boy is completely off the charts amazing.
Anyone who has learned to touch type can understand that incredibly mysterious link between the brain and the fingers that just "happens." Touch typists often can't tell you what letters are under which fingers... the connection goes directly from the brain to the fingers without any conscious "thinking" to get in the way.
I think this is exactly what happens in Joey's case... along with a fabulous and innate talent for music. I'll bet he "sees" the music in his brain and somehow what he "sees" is automatically translated into patterns executed with his fingers. The piano is just the machine that makes the resulting sound.
I think you’re right. It’s so hard to explain musicality like this! His syncopation is innate… and it will continue to develop as he mature.. he’s light years ahead accomplished musicians!

I wrote that 4 years ago apparently. I just watched it again. I marvel at his skill even though I don't pretend to understand or even like the "music."
I'd love to hear what innovation he could bring to something more "middle-of-the-road."
I like tunes I can sing or at least hum.
I love watching prodigies. The first time I've listened to Karise Eden sang "It's a man's world", my jaw dropped. She was 19, but she had such an old soul, as if she lived at least half a century. Then, I heard Paolo Nutini's Autumn Leaves (and later "Iron Sky"), and he's 19 at a time. That wows me, such emotional piece from such a young heart. But for their cases, esp Karise, it's still somewhat understandable, she walked through a harsh life and combining with immense talent, and such.
But for this young one, Joey. I don't think anything I know or have seen so far could explain this. 10 years of age, and playing this piece with such depth and emotion, also playful. Experience surely is not an answer, and talent alone maybe understatement. I'm not sure whether it possible or not theoretically, but I "feel" (i don't even wanna use the word 'think' here) that he uses his pure talent to understand such deep emotion and he succeeded, perhaps with such ease. I don't know whether emotion can be understand this way or not, but i feel that his talent is that much. It breaks the boundary of common knowledge by far.

I am awestruck by this unbelievably talented young giant.
I'm sorry to admit to having only just today discovered the truly extraordinary Joey Alexander; and like everybody else coming upon his music for the first time was staggered to discover his age. This jazz devotee, after more than sixty years of listening to the greats, can recognise exceptional talent when he hears it, but this kind of superior jazz from a twelve-year-old? It's so way above normal, it's got to be ... well, what else but some kind of genius? This level of jazz performance is not just goosebumps but tears-to-the-eye stuff.
One hopes this boy (still a pre-teen for goodness sake!) will prove to be an inspiration to young jazz musicians in the way that Lang Lang has inspired young classical pianists, and at the same time enlarge the music's youthful audience.

That's what jazz is about. You can play the same tune and chords, but each iteration will come out different.
I'm not generally a fan of jazz, but Joey Alexander just knocks me out. I haven't been this excited about jazz piano since Keith Jarrett's Köln Concert. Marvelous.

Stunning. Powerful. I am 59 years old and NEVER liked jazz - at all. But Joey has brought something truly golden and an unearthly beauty to this world. At this time, had only TOUCHED a piano for 4 years!! Genius...prodigy...none of those things touch his gift & his genuineness (is that a word???)
In 2020 he has become one of my favourite musicians along with Chick Correa. He doesn’t just play this, he feels it and his phrasing is different every time, immaculate 👍

My vote somehow ought to count for one thousand---this child is not just a prodigy, he is something unknown until now ; there has not been such a one. When Mozart (much pushed it is said by his parent, and it should be pointed out that Mozart was being force fed, if I'm not mistaken, classical theory;) Joey just heard records that ignited him. [Mozart might well have reacted accordingly had he had the opportunity..]

This is not from this world.
But my favourite composer in the classical sector, Erich Wolfgang Korngold(1897-1957) is -in my humble opinion- his equivalent.
He was a complete composer and pianist at the age of 9 - 11 years.
And he was not pushed by his parents.
His father was the then most known music critic in Vienna and feared that exactly this would be said.
So he sent copies of his sons works to other critics asking them about the quality but did not tell them it was his sons work.
I want to point out that it was not possible in his time without- more or less- records and such things to have the knowledge he had at age 11 only by listening to records when he wrote this:

And he also was a master pianist at this age.
He truly wrote works in the- then- most modern idiom and had his very own style from the very beginning.
For me not Mozart but Korngold was the most astonishing prodigy of all times.
Until now.
Now the most astonishing prodigies for me are Korngold AND Joey Alexander.
Why?
There were a lot of prodigies around at each time.
But to be able to play fast or to immitate others is not the whole thing.
Korngold had and Joey today has such an understanding and a most deeply feeling about music one
only would be able to find in old souls.
Their maturity and deep understanding at age 11 sets them apart from other prodigies which "only" immitate or
compose in an older style.
Korngold at 11 was absolutely up to date in his musical language as is Joey in his playing today.
I wish Joey a great career and a fullfilled life.

Scott Joplin, Satchmo, Chet Baker, Edith Pilaf, Miles Davis and Django Rheinhart are playing still and they are listening too. The road goes on forever.......

You know if I hadn't heard him I'd really be annoyed by the presence of child prodigy jazz pianist. But, since I have heard him, he's one of the true delights in my life. One of maybe a dozen jazz musicians I just can't get enough of. Wow, forget his age : his music is soooooooooooooo gooood ! But if you do consider his age it's just mind-blowing.

He is not a prodigy. He is a pure miracle. He started playing at 5 or 6 n 4 years later he can played this. Most of his playing he learned by him self. No words can explain this but "pure miracle"

Even if I totally agree both of your lines I like to try find out my basic idea.
At first Joey's playing wake up feeling like "tacit knowledge" - no word to explain but a stupendous flow of ideas and feelings full universe of mind. His sense of rythm and harmony is something man can't practice ie one have it or not.
On the other hand Joey's smooth technical implementation is something he has practiced - well, for a couple of years. That seeming ease is part of the talent, that is part he has learned to play, technical point of view, in such a short time.

He only had one piano teacher in his life which was when he studied piano in bali at the age of six, then he taught himself by improvisation and instinct through compact discs, He is genius one
