This ensemble is absolutely wild. Stuart Duncan doesn’t read music, so he learns these crazy arrangements by ear. Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile write and arrange the music. And then Yo Yo Ma is newish to bluegrass and just kills it. This is musicianship and collaboration at the highest level.
It's hard enough to wrap your head around all that talent, but then think about how much talent and how little ego is around that tiny desk is amazing. Not just great musicians, but great men who truly love and care about music more than their own ego. Absolutely rare talent here and I hope a copy of The Goat Rodeo Sessions is already in the Library of Congress as a national treasure!
Love this comment, reminds me of when I was lucky enough to see the Dubliners and especially Barney McKenna on his banjo, and despite his failing memory you just knew he was at one with his instrument and could do anything with it - sublime. These guys are obviously there too!!!
I have had the priviledge of meeting with Yo-Yo Ma twice in my time. He really is that charming, genuine and full of life. Both times I met him, he was nothing but encouraging. The classical/folk/cultural music scene needs more people like him!
Took me increasing the video resolution and until about 9:10, to realize that Yo Yo was matching every single friggin note of fiddle player on an instrument that requires about Six times as much "reach" and has about TEN times as much string tension! Good Lord.
@@thenewunderdog7123 The octave doesn't matter, they're both a huge pain; a cello doesn't have a high E string. To hit that high G you need to shift up from first to fourth position then right back down. If it was in the higher octave, he'd have to stay in thumb position and probably cut his thumb in the process. (Probably not, that thing is most likely insanely calloused as it is, but you get my point)
Simply WOW! That was amazing. Meyer was KILLING IT on bass. The intonation was just spot on. And those runs after 7:24...Sweet lord of Double Bass have mercy....
Chris Thile is my favorite musician. An absolute master at the mandolin, a wonderful songwriter, but beyond that I think he's one of the biggest advocates for good music and musicianship - regardless of genre - alive today. All respect to greats like Sam Bush and David Grisman, but I think by the time his career is over Chris will have a much more far-reaching impact on American music as a whole. Collaborations like this and the work he did with jazz pianist Brad Mehldau are so important, and to boot he remains incredibly active in the bluegrass and folk communities. Keep it up, sir 👏👏👏
For me, it was Sesame Street. Just him sitting alone out in that courtyard between the apartment building and Hooper's Store at "nighttime" playing some beautifully haunting piece. I was just mesmerized.
Shout-out to the equipment and the audio engineer, making them in this office environment sound just like the versions they played in the studio. Awesome.
I just caught this Tiny Desk Concert on my stream in 12.2020. I clicked as I'd never seen Yo-Yo Ma, could never afford those concerts. He's is a force of nature, with such lightness in his heart when he plays. So much talent in this group. "Quarter Chicken Dark," is a gorgeous, fun melody ( if that's the correct term). It went straight to my heart & lit up my tiny space by the sea. I found myself dancing around clapping with my sick pittie. I'm going out into the cold night air with the joy of music in my heart. I thank you all for that. I hope everyone is safe & well & thriving 9 years later during these challenging times.
Didn't clock until today the last one at 10:39 where edgar is playing open string again and yo-yo gets in a cheeky last mega quick wave half way through a line hahah
No Name strange thing is - the bass top string should be a G, yet Meyer has it tuned to an A. I can’t even wrap my head around how that would be easy to switch up my mind like that.
I know everyone in this band are amazing artist, but Yo-Yo Ma is just spectacular! You can just see in the way he plays that he lives and breaths in his music. He just makes me appreciate the human's incredible nature.
this is truly one of the best videos I've ever watched. It's ridiculous. These world class, top of their instruments coming together and doing this at Tiny Desk. It's nothing short of amazing.
I play the cello, classically, and I’ve never heard the cello played like this. Yo Yo Ma plays in this style so well I’m honestly so inspired rn to try playing that way
Yo bro, idk if you've ever heard of the rado show "The prairie home companion" But Chris Thile(The mandolin player) recently took over as host of the show and I swear every week he touches on hip hop in one way or another, last week he did a shout out to phife and performed a Tribe song, today I just heard him cover Kendrick Lamar Alright.
