Had to check this out because I saw a different youtube clip of him playing this that only lasts about 30 secs, and it blew my mind. It was lightning fast and awesome. Was so happy to get to hear the whole thing, and it being a slow version was surprising. Amazing how good this guy can make music sound. Much love for Chris Thile. Amazing piano too to whomever I owe the tribute.
Brad Mehldau's the pianist--he's one of the best living jazz musicians, and probably the best jazz pianist. (I'm biased, but I do think this is also maybe just true...)
He certainly ticks a lot of boxes. Probably the one with the most unexpected ideas in improvisation. The tightest. Very cerebral, in comparison to Jarrett. Jarrett is more emotional, but also cerebral. But Jarrett can be a bit boring when you're not in the mood for emotional music in away that Brad is not. And then we got the super craftsman of harmony and general music logic - Lyle Mays. Very cerebral and emotional, but not as technical as the other two, except for his ingenuity and genius at composition, which translates very much into his playing.
Super awesome angle captured here! Very neat and different from a lot of the performance shots I've seen. With the performance and the light added to that, it makes for a stunner. Thanks for recording the performance. That right there was pretty much non-smut smut. ;) This helped alleviate a non-so-great in a month I've now dubbed Hell-bruary. Thank goodness for music, art, and talent. Thank you again!
Thank you so much for this comment! I was lucky enough to be front row for this show and I almost felt obligated to record at least something. Chris Thile is a national treasure and a cure-all. Very glad you enjoyed my silly little video (and thanks for sharing on Tumblr, too!) :)
Why do people laugh when he plays in an unconventional way... is this high school? This would be better if the audience would just shut up! :) Very interesting otherwise.
this is what happens when two of the best jazz musicians of our time cover a song by one of the best songwriters of our time.

if anyone ever gives this a thumb's down they should have youtube comments privileges revoked immediately.
This song kinda feels like the pop/jazz version of that song that won the piano battle in Legend of 1900.
marry me now
