You hit the nail on the head, the chain is the band. The members were tearing each other apart with personal drama, the entirety of Rumours is filled with breakup songs and snide remarks but they were chained together by the knowledge they were making something beautiful out of their pain.

@@jnagarya519 No, it is not. It started out that way when N+B laid down the opening sequence/demo. But the whole band, as has been stated elsewhere, became involved in crafting the demo into the finished product, and by then the metaphor had morphed into the ralisation that "The Chain" had become about the whole band, how much the band needed each other probably as much as thew individual alliances within the band.
There were periods in which various members would leave the band later on, but they all knew that they were part of something special, and even when one or other left, they all knew that they would be welcomed back. The song became the band, and the band became the song.

Fleetwood Mac wrote 'The Chain' for their 1977 album 'Rumours'... Stevie Nicks (vocals) wrote the original demo... the band re-made the song and added more parts... it became a song about the band and was credited to all 5 members.
At that point in 1977, Fleetwood Mac was becoming a soap opera... Stevie Nicks (vocals) & Lindsey Buckingham (guitar & vocals) were a couple and they were breaking up during the recording... (the late) Christine McVie (keyboards & vocals) and her husband John McVie (bass) had separated, and Christine was dating someone else... Mick Fleetwood (drums) got divorced from his wife at the same time... So, there was plenty of heartbreak while this song was being recorded...
A while later, Mick Fleetwood and Stevie Nicks started dating as a couple, and they had to eventually tell Lindsey... but it didn't last. Mick Fleetwood apparently dumped Stevie for her friend Sara, whom he married for a while...
Thankfully, Lindsey Buckingham, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood eventually got happily married to new women not in the band!
Stevie Nicks only briefly married a friend, but has been single w/ no children... Christine McVie married one more time after John McVie but divorced and she stayed friends w/ her ex John McVie... She passed away in 2022 w/ no children.

You nailed it. I believe it was the only song they did that had writing credits for all 5 members. I remember reading an article in Rolling Stone where the writer was present for a rehearsal and he or she (don't remember) described a rehearsal of this song and how much electricity and tension there was in the air when they finished it.

Another great song from the "Rumours" album. "The Chain" was written during the turmoil in all of their lives. Lindsay Buckingham & Stevie Nicks were ending their years long relationship, John & Christine McVie's marriage broke down, as did that of Mick Fleetwood & his wife Jenny Boyd. Their album "Rumours" (1977) is one of the best-selling albums in history. All the songs on it are great such as "Dreams", "Go Your Own Way", "Don't Stop", "You Make Loving Fun". "Second Hand News", "Gold Dust Woman" etc. Sadly Christine McVie passed away recently.

I think when they wrote and recorded these songs for the "Rumors" album and then performed them live, it was their form of therapy to get past those personal moments.
It seemed to have worked over the years because they still remain great friends and even before the passing of Christine any remaining underlaying animosity has been resolved.
This band made beautiful music out of their turmoil and did it in a way that can not be repeated.

An old English slang for "wife" is "ball-and-chain", or "the old ball-and-chain". It refers to a form of leg shackle where an iron bracelet around a prisoner's ankle was welded to a chain welded to a cannonball. A kind of brutality from the period of the slave trade and western European imperial conquests around the world. So The Chain could also be the vows of marriage, and breaking the chain then meaning divorce.

This concert was a historic reunion for Fleetwood Mac in 1997... They had not performed w/ this line-up (Lindsey Buckingham on guitar & vocals) since the 80's... Steve Nicks had also left the band by 1992. Fleetwood Mac was on hiatus by 1995.
In 1996, US President Bill Clinton won his re-election... he used Fleetwood Mac's song "Don't stop" at his rallies and thanked the band by inviting them to play at his 1997 inauguration - it was the first time they had played together in a decade.
The reception was so huge that they decided to reunite the classic Fleetwood Mac line-up in 1997 and a live album 'The Dance' was released that year... it went to #1 on the US charts and sold 5x platinum. A major comeback tour followed.
However, Christine McVie (keyboard & vocals) left the band in 1999 weary of touring... She returned to Fleetwood Mac to tour again in 2014 after 15 years away and did their last tours before she passed away in 2022.

Just saw Stevie Nicks in a brand new clip from Jimmy Fallon's show and she said that Lindsay Buckingham had hair as long as hers when they first joined the band and that he was absolutely "beautiful." She said she was really upset when he cut his hair...but that he was still incredibly handsome. She also said that she and Lindsay still have that attraction to one another and it creates electricity every time they perform. That when they go onstage they still have that "love affair" and the audience gets to share in it every night. Then afterwards they both go to their own limousines back to seperate hotels, and then they do it again the next night.

I saw Fleetwood Mac at the University of Arizona's Wildcat Stadium in Tucson in 1977. I had a stage pass so I was watching them on the left wing of the stage. They were an incredibly tight band and this concert was of particular meaning to Stevie Nicks because it was a benefit concert for the American Heart Association. She was raised in Tucson and her father, who suffered from heart disease, lived there. In addition to Fleetwood Mac, the Marshall Tucker Band and Kenny Loggins also performed. I was going to a lot of concerts in those days.

?Yjis whole album, Rumors, was a trip into their coked out drug addled, jaded, minds of the members. Songs about betrayal, pain, loss, hunger, depression with a big heaping helping of infidelity and hedonism. Stevie (vocals and tambourine)was ending her long term (longer than they had been in the band together) relationship with Lindsey Buckingham (guitar and vocals) Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood had an affair after the singer dated their Fleetwood Mac bandmate, Second Hand News is a nod towards vocalist, Stevie Nicks and her affair with Mick Fleetwood after her and Lindsey’s breakup. Lyrics such as “I know there’s nothing left to say/Someone has taken my place” and “One thing I think you should know/I ain’t gonna miss you when you go” really show the hurt and longing to move on from his previous lover even if it’s the best thing for him in the end. He knows his relationship is in the past and there’s no more left of what was once there. This song is an amazing song to start off the album because it gives the listener a preview for what’s to come. An album of true heartbreak.
Dreams speaks the truth of leaving for the benefit of yourself. Nicks expresses the feeling of being too involved in a relationship and having different expectations as her partner and it’s hurting her as well, she is frustrated and wants to leave. Lyrics like, “But listen carefully to the sound of your loneliness,” and “In the stillness of remembering what you had, oh, what you lost,” express the side of her not wanting to leave and not leaving because she didn’t have feelings for her lover but leaving because she didn’t feel valued in the relationship anymore.
Never Going Back Again written by Lindsey Buckingham shows the emotional journey of someone recently getting out of a breakup and trying to open up to new people and relate to people who have had shared and similar experiences like the lyric, “She broke me down and let me in/Made me see where I’d been.” Buckingham relates to the person who he’s with now remembering the feeling of breaking down and letting someone in like in a previous relationship he had.
Don’t Stop was written by Christine McVie and gives the incentive to keep moving forward through tough times. The lyrics “Open your eyes and look at the day/You’ll see things in a different way” give off the impression that Christine was having a rough patch and this song was her way of giving herself a reminder that things will be okay. The chorus also brings on that feeling of moving on and having faith in the future with the lyrics, “It’ll be better than before/Yesterday’s gone, yesterday’s gone.” The song has a very upbeat sound with a happy motivational message during a tough time period brought from personal experience of the songwriter.
Go Your Own Way written and performed vocally by Lindsey Buckingham was the very first song that Lindsey wrote for Rumours about a partner getting up and leaving their current lover. Stevie Nicks, who the song is written about, expressed to Rolling Stone how difficult performing this song live was for her, Buckingham knew that and so did everyone else, but because the song was a fan favorite she always just powered through it. Understandably when lyrics from the song include, “Packing up, shacking up’s all you wanna do” saying that all she wants to do is leave and bounce from guy to guy and that she’s free to ‘go her own way’ and leave because he doesn’t want to put up with that anymore.
Songbird written and performed vocally by Christine McVie, The song is about putting someone you love over yourself in a relationship. It’s a very soft and melodic ballad with very moving lyrics. McVie sings “To you, I’ll give the world/To you, I’ll never be cold,” stating how she loves him so much that she will give up anything and act certain ways around him purely to appease him even if it means hurting herself. At the bridge of the song lyrics such as, “And I wish you all the love in the world/But most of all, I wish it for myself,” saying she does love him but maybe starting to realize that she also deserves to feel as loved as much as she is willing to love.
The Chain, easily the most popular and best-known Fleetwood Mac song, is the only song on the album credited to all the members of Fleetwood Mac but is vocally performed by Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Metaphors are everywhere in this song and shows all of the feelings throughout a breakup, bitterness, anger, resentment, calm disbelief and goes back to a loud and powerful rage. This is represented both instrumentally and lyrically. Picking only a few examples from lyrics, you can see meanings such as reflections over a long period of time over a failed relationship in the lyrics from two verses. From the first verse the lyrics “Listen to the wind blow/Watch the sun rise,” and in the second “Listen to the wind blow/Down comes the night.” Other lyrics include, “Damn your love, damn your lies,” almost saying that their love and their lies are one in the same. Instrumentally between the chorus and the outro of the song there is a bass and guitar solo that shows the build up of anger, starting with a slow and low bass line being build up by a drum tempo starting to quicken that is taken over by a guitar solo getting increasingly louder and louder accompanied by all the other instruments. The song is filled with passion and heartbreak hearing both Buckingham and Nicks singing together. The Chain will forever be known as one of the greatest songs of all time.
You Make Loving Fun was written by Christine McVie, It’s main inspiration was a quick relationship between Christine after her and John’s divorce. “You Make Loving Fun” really stands out because it is a love song and has a very different approach compared to the other song. It is a very optimistic song while the other songs are mostly from more of a pessimistic view. The song is about telling someone how much they love them. Lyrics like “You make me happy with the things you do,” and “ I never did believe in miracles/But I’ve a feeling it’s time to try,” confirm her feelings for someone and feeling like they are able to take a chance with them.
Oh Daddy, Christine wrote the song for Mick Fleetwood because he was the only father out of the whole band. The song is a very emotional one rooted from the idea of self criticism and insecurities. Some lyrics from examples of these feelings are “How can you love me/I don’t understand why,” and “If there’s a fool around it’s got to be me.” Also lyrics such as “I’m so weak but you’re so strong,” and “And I can’t walk away from you, baby, if I tried,” stating how depended and blindsided this person is for their lover. They are too scared to leave the relationship that may be toxic and unhealthy just because it is familiar and don’t want to be alone.
    hope this helps.

There's been a lot of turmoil within Fleetwood Mac, so yeah...a lot of their songs are directly about their relationships and what's going on with the band. The surprising part is that they've managed to come together even through the years of drama. All of the members are individually awesome and it is magic when they all get together like this.

The chain 1982 video is the one you can see the tension and the release it in the song onstage.

  • @guillermojimenezcastelblan8456

The internal drama among them, helped, ironically, to create one of the top seller 1970`s album ever, and it does still today, the amazing 1977 album "Rumours". Sadly, piano player, Christine Mc Vie, wife of bassist John Mc Vie, passed away a few months ago. The Chain..... will keep us together...what a message.

I've recently fallen in love with OTYKEN, a Siberian folk-pop band playing traditional tribal instruments and electric guitar along with throat singing and what the website describes as "elemental vocals." This fantastic music is like nothing you've ever heard. My favorite song is "Khan Blues," but every song I've heard from them is exciting and moving. And the vocals - OMG. The most recent song is a collab with a throat singer named Ummet Ozcan. The song is "Altay." I don't think it shows off Otyken's awesome native strengths, but the throat singing is very impressive.
Here's what the Otyken website says:
Оtyken is a Siberian indigenous music group, a marvelous combination of traditional musical instruments and modern arrangements. Our mystical throat singing, special elemental vocals, enchanting sounds of vargan (jaw harp), khomys, morinhur, and leather drums will take you to the wild thickets of the Siberian taiga. We sing our songs in Khakass, Chulyms and Russian. In our songs you can hear the great history of the Siberian indigenous national crafts. Our musicians (Chulyms) will tell you about their usual daily life: collecting herbs and pine cones, moving through wild taiga for hunting, apiary work, preparing gear for night fishing. The magical power of our music will heal your soul and your body as well, and it can even send you into a trance! Currently, the OTYKEN project includes the following indigenous peoples of Siberia: Chulyms, Kets, Selkups, Khakases and Dolgans.
You are not prepared for this.

The Rumours album is listed as #13 on the all time highest selling album. I still have a vinyl album in its original wrapping. Bought it in 1978, and am hoping to make some big money some day. May I suggest doing some Stevie Nicks songs. In particular "GYPSIE". Thank you for posting this video.

I wish you heard the studio version as a first reaction to this song. It rocks harder and they didn't have to tune down to compensate for aging voices. But yeah, it is a good song of theirs and the lyrics were very much about that, keeping the band together despite personal issues. They have a very troubled past that you would be fascinated by if you looked up their history. Unfortunately, the guitarist ended up leaving anyway and one of the other members passed away. They are not currently active anymore but their legacy is quite huge.

Mick Fleetwood had a restaurant in Lahaina Town Maui that was destroyed in the fire. He used to go there periodically and play, and at times with local musicians. So sad it's not around anymore. Hopefully he will rebuild it.

I worked as Technical Support at Apple and worked at the booth they had, but was down in front for Fleetwood Mac and it was a magical show! Also seen Lindsey after he went solo and can tell you in my opinion he was the soul of the band.
