Bisscute is a good name for you, because you are off the charts cute. I'm sure you've heard that before. Glad to see you loving Dire Straits Sultans of Swing.
Mark Knopfler is a different kind of "great guitar player". He doesn't use gimmicks (speed or power or showmanship). He's very subtle with his playing, and you almost don't realize it the first time listening to him just how freaking great of a player he is. And watching a liver performance like this, you just get a sense at how at ease he is playing, but don't confuse ease with easy, because he's technically one of the greatest of all time.
Knopfler is undeniably one the best and maybe the best rock guitarist with his fingerpicking style of playing. But gotta give props to the drummer also he was absolutely killing it.
Fun fact. It was the first time that Terry Williams' father (on drums) went to watch his son play live. This version of the song is the most energetic I've ever seen. They nailed it !!!
Absolutely, I some how missed it in my youth. I saw a reaction to it a few months ago and ordered the Blue ray disc right away. The whole concert was great
I couldn't believe Knopfler's rhythmic and dynamic intensity on this. Even after having heard the original countless times, I was just not prepared (in the best possible sense).
"This guitar has feelings". Oh my sweet girl, you really have no idea, do you? Mark Knopfler can make you smile from ear to ear as fast as he can make you cry an ocean. Not only a very accomplished singer and songwriter but also one of greatest virtuosos to ever play a guitar. And he still is. You have, and I mean HAVE to treat yourself to this fabulous concert from start to finish. After 40+ years still is one of the most iconic shows ever done.
This group has only released magnificent albums, I particularly love Private Investigations and Mark Knopfler remains an extraordinary guitarist with such a unique and quickly recognizable style.
"That guitar has feelings", you nailed it. Mark's tone and finesse are just so pleasing. This performance is a masterpiece in musicianship, the drums are on FIRE, they have fun, just a fabulous moment of art! Awesome reaction
Not enough credit is given to Mark Knopfler, who is actually left-handed, but learned to play the guitar right-handed, because he thought it looked better...
Mark Knopfler geht's so much praise for his guitar playing, and rightfully so, but can we appreciate the drumming too? That man (Williams ?) is a machine, so damn tight, still with enough feel and groove. He's absolutely keeping it all together.
If you watch for it throughout the whole song, you'll notice how much the guys in the group watch each other. They're sending and catching subtle clues and cues. They've been playing together long enough and are talented enough to pick up and play off of what they're doing.
Terry's energy on drums drives this performance well beyond the studio version. Also a shout out to the sound engineer who balanced this to perfection - despite Terry's attempt to steal the show.
@@derklavierspieler7491 Jealous? I don’t understand that odd comment. I was just noting that if the sound engineer had not been balancing so expertly then the volume generated by Terry could have drowned the rest. In any case, Terry didn’t play on the studio version. Go and listen. Totally different and lacks the sheer drive and energy that Terry introduces. Pick Withers played the studio version and was known to favour a restrained drum beat. When he left he explained that he thought the band was becoming ‘too loud’. The two versions, studio and Alchemy show that opinion clearly.
@@derklavierspieler7491 Well your opinion is in error. No such jealousy at all. Terry was on a mission for sure and at one point Mark looked around at him with a huge smile as he appreciated the energy and massive contribution to the band's performance.
@@derklavierspieler7491 That's very rude. And inappropriate. Especially when you misused the word 'jealous' so obviously, and put your own word comprehension skills in question. Now go away, you annoying person. You are dismissed.
Saw Dire Straits many times over the Alchemy tour including various places in Europe - Paris, Brussels, Geneva and Netherlands. Always great and brings back many happy memories.
fun fact. It was the first time that Terry Williams' father (on drums) went to watch his son play live. This version of the song is the most energetic I've ever seen.
I am listening to the rock and heavier music more than 25 years just now, and I can say, that this performance still is the best one ever recorded! And this means a lot!
From what i understand, this song is inspired by a visit to a pub where Mark Knopfler was having a drink and saw some band playing. At the end of their show they called themselves the sultans of swing. The funny part is that there was barely any folks in the bar at the time. Knopfler said in an interview: "At that time you are not the sultans of anything"
Terry Williams, my favourite ever drummer since he was with ‘Man’ in the day, absolutely steals this for me. What a joy to watch. Apparently his dad was in the audience, so legend has it, and so Terry played out of his skin (no pun intended). What a fantastic show. Other great numbers from this tour on UA-cam. Telegraph Road is epic.
Biss, check out "Tunnel Of Love" from this same concert. The track was used in the Bar Scene from the Juke Box, in "An Officer And A Gentleman". Live performance is simply stunning !!
Miss Bisscute your smiles and giggles throughout this reaction combined with your chair dancing said as much as your words ….great reaction …your smile brightens a lot of people’s day
Молодые музыканты отметились яркой и красивой музыкой! Молодцы, парни! Прекрасный концерт! Спасибо ведущей за горячую поддержку и увлекательный репортаж!❤
A great reaction Biss, I think you just got a big hug from 1983! "Telegraph Road" from the same Alchemy tour deserves your attention. . .. it has some fantastic piano playing and, of course Mark Knopflers elegant guitar work. Plenty of smiles too!
Yay! Good one! So, the term "Honky Tonk" has a dual meaning. A honky tonk is a bar where live music is performed. Historically that can be associated with a few different types of music, but it's mostly now related with country music, but it also refers to the type of music you would hear in a honky tonk. It's not necessarily just any bar that plays country music though. It's usually connatated with a certain type of bar. Usually a place that's kind of tawdry and dirty that attracts a rough crowd of people that are there to drink, dance, and get wild, and that's also reflected in the style and sound of the music. You catch my drift? I know you don't do much country, but check out a Waylon Jennings song called "Honky Tonk Heroes"!
I’ve been listening to this band for 40 years + This must be the best live version of this song and to see you enjoy it too and smile like you do gives me some faith in the younger generation of today. Great reaction, more Dire Straits please, “Private Investigations” is a personal favourite but there are so many!
I've seen many, many reactions to this and this is, by far, the best one. You got the DS vibe and your smile, joy and rythm were so contagious that made me move, smile and feel exactly how I felt in 1986 when we watch this with friends, ecstatic, in a VHS tape. Thank you again ❤
You should DEFINITELY check out their performance of Telegraph Road from Alchemy Live too, that's essentially the DEFINITIVE Dire Straits live presentation right there.
Bouncing right along with you! 🙂 The guitar fills between lines of the song and the guitar solo are just wonderful! And your reaction is fun to watch, too!
Aww what a great reaction Biss, this is the music we rocked to all those years ago and it's just as good today as it was almost 40 years ago. I really enjoyed this and just hope that you will react to Telegraph road soon, if you bounced to sultans but you're going to fall off your chair for Telegraph road.
Let me shout this out for you…This is The BEST LIVE PERFORMANCE BY A ROCK BAND EVER RECORDED…I am 78 years old and a lifelong music aficionado…I have seen countless live performances by countless bands of every musical genre…but nothing, nothing tops this masterpiece of sight and sound…turn the volume up, sit back, and be prepared to be blown away…let the magic begin
Hi biss, that 1 minute guitar playing after he looks at his drummer at 10:04 is epic, such talent. Mark has an excellent and unique sound, shout out also to the drummer 👏
Finally you got to this song and was great that you ended up reacting to the Alchemy Live version. Just so you know in this song during the main verses, Mark Knopfler (the guitarist and lead singer) is talking to the guitar. You can hear him say something then he answers with his guitar. You will pick up many new things after listening to this song more and more each time. Really glad you felt the vibe during your first hearing.!
Good choice for this version of the song. This song is fun because you can listen to the guitar and follow the drums or you can listen to the drums and follow the guitar on the next listen.
Great fun, this might be my favorite reaction to this video. Mark Knopfler is a genius guitarist, and his finger picking style (no pick) is unique and recognizable. I read somewhere that the drummer's dad was in the audience and until this point had never seen his son play. Might be an apocryphal story but sure makes sense when you see Terry's amazingly energetic performance.
For live versions of their songs, any you find from their concert in Nimes, France in 1992 will be a winner. Such a great concert! Their song "Going Home (Local Hero)" is one that really showcases Mark's brilliant guitar playing (although most songs do that :) ). It was a fantastic end to the Nimes concert, a great and poignant encore performance.
Biss, you brought joy to my day with this one! Thank you! And if you decide to do more Dire Straits, there isn't a "wrong pick" from this Alchemy Live show. The entire show is fire. Telegraph Road, Private Investigation, Romeo and Juliet. I'm also especially fond of Once Upon A Time In The West. Speaking of west, over on your movie Patreon, I keep hoping for a western movie poll.
I was so sure you'd love that song and the performance that I gave a like before watching your reaction. My favorite of all your reactions so far. Keep up the good work Biss :)

It was an amazing concert, so glad you reacted to it Now react to Telegraph Road, that was the encore😉😉
May you find smiling faces wherever you go and, from your heart, let it show! Mark Knopfler rarely use a pick when he plays, he is ALL fingers, and those fingers are all over the place! Very talented. Thanks Biss!!
Iconic song! Unfortunately, last time Dire Straits came around I was on spring break and I missed them. It was 1992 and they have not toured since. One of the bands I always wanted to see.
wow that's great, Miss Bisscute I'm so happy that you reacted to another of my suggestions😁😁, it's a magnificent song and an excellent live performance by D.S. I loved seeing you enjoy the song and seeing you move to the rhythm of the music and smile😍😍. Thanks Biss. The reactions to live performances are the best. That's why my recommendations for future reactions: INXS (live at Wemblay 1991) songs: What you need and Suicide Blonde. Peter Gabriel (secret world live tour) songs: Shaking the tree and In your eyes. You will love those live performances Madalina.
Dire Straits is such a great band, sometimes underrated and not so well remembered. All their albuns are incredibly rich and well played. I would particularly recomend you "Your latest trick", with an outstanding saxo. Also, Romeo and Juliet and Telegraph Road are great suggestions.

So Pick Withers already left? That's sad, he too was an amazing drummer.
The drummer was great. He's more like a metal drummer than I expected from a Dire Straits drummer.
Totally agree on that
Mark always surrounds himself with great talent. So tight, such an amazing live band.
