So this gal is cool in that she is technically awesome but she never talks about anything negative about some bands. Last time I looked this was in the top ten best selling albums of all time. How they recorded it was like right there with Pink Floyd and the Beatles, Beach Boys and the evolution of the 8 track, ect. This is hardly a critical analysis. Stevie Nicks' nose is pretty messed up from coke at this time I think? I don't know. There is so much missing here. I do love this gal but I am just saying.
Yeah, and this performance is just at the tail end of when they were the biggest band in the world. All their affairs have come out in the open, all the divorces are through, and they're still attached together by The Chain that is Fleetwood Mac, too big to quit.
Its not despite of the things but because of them that the album turned out a masterpiece 😂
Lindsey is one of the most underrated guitar players of his time. He’s so so good.
Whenever he left, Mick had to hire two guitarists to take his place. Just an amazing player. I'm sure you have already but watch "big love at Saban" and EPIC RIFFS | Fleetwood Mac - Why it's so difficult to play. Truly an amazing skill.
Dude has skills that dwarf most shredders but never gets the recognition. I think it's because being a great writer/singer/performer were his priorities.

Never before has a group of people hated each other so much and yet made such compelling music. You'll notice that Stevie always holds her note put longer than Lindsey. It's a total power move. It's Stevie always needing to have the final say.
It is quite amazing how this group made these songs and stayed together as long as they did. Truly and purely for the music. Quite incredible AND they probably did as much drugs as any band you can name.
But it all comes across in the live performances and you can see the angst and I think almost uniquely it makes for some of the best live performances.

There is a great Classic Albums segment on it but yeah it deserves a bigger treatment.
Read the book "Making Rumors: The Inside Story of the Classic Fleetwood Mac Album" by Ken Caillat who was the engineer on the album (as well as Colbie's father). Maybe they'll make the movie out of it.
It would probably look closer to Sid & Nancy than it would Bohemian Rhapsody.
Basically you want Boogie Nights with a few British accents thrown in.

I saw them during the tour after Buckingham left. There were 2 guitars there And there was still a big hole in the performance.😢
And one of those guitarists was Mike Campbell, Tom Petty's guitar player who is no slouch. But yes, hard to do what Lindsey does
The big hole was filling his parts in minutes. He left them hanging with concert dates contracted. I agree LB is the most underrated guitarist, he’s also a controlling, micro managing, narcissistic, abusive jerk.
I can’t think of a song LB wrote where he hands off the lead to another singer. The lyrics for this song were written by Nicks. The music is stitching together of Chris’ “Keep Me …” Buckingham’s “Lola My Love” and a some original riffs of John and Mick. But those lyrics are from the song Nicks wrote. The original lyrics are dark and sorrow filled. The Buckingham version is just angry. But he manages to steal the lead, like he does in Don’t Stop and Crystal, both other writers in the group. But he produced…
Mike Campbell is a killer player don’t try taking anything away from him. He had to learn the set pretty quickly the way it went down.

The entire Rumours album is a masterpiece. If you haven’t listened to Fleetwood Mac, you really owe it to yourself to listen to the entire thing. I’ve been a huge fan of the band and their solo work since the 70s. By the way, speaking of venom, check out the photo of their Rolling Stone cover that was released around the same time. It’s amazing.

Rumours is indeed a masterpiece. Not a bad song on that album. I grew listening to that on 8-track, then cassette, then CD, etc. Never gets old.
Rumors is one of the best albums ever recorded, at any time, in any language. It is a stunningly good piece of musicianship.
IIRC something like 7 of the 11 songs were released as singles (don't quote me on numbers, I'm far too lazy to look things up just for this post). It should have been the whole thing. I cannot understand how the hell they managed to actually record and release that album, given everything that was happening in their relationships at the time, but it's truly a gift to the world.

I worked in Production on a Viacom event at the Theatre under Madison Square Garden many years ago. In rehearsal that day, this song hit me like a ton of bricks and was left in tears and speechless. They all performed this song as if their lives depended on it..! I needed to take a break and recover so I could continue my work that day. In almost 25 years of working on concerts, Live TV Award Shows and other Productions, I have NEVER been that deeply moved by a performance. And did I say that this was only rehearsal where artists usually "Save" the good stuff for the main show..? Holy crap. Watching this clip reminds me of that day SO MUCH that I'm feeling it all over again. It was magical - and I was honored by being able to tell them how raw and real this was for me after rehearsal was over. Nice day at the office !!

This concert did not need stage pyrotechnics. The performers did that.

The social dynamics of this band, and the lyrics they gave each other to sing, are just mindboggling.
Not only the story and performances are great, the studio version has one of the best sound quality, mastering and production I've heard. It's one of my go-to songs for testing headphones and speakers.
Also, the bass riff at the final part is amazing 😍

It is fantastic, but if you want to test speakers and headphones you should use the recording most professionals use to calibrate sound equipment, the Aja album by Steely Dan. It is the best overall recording in music, period!

100% agree.
I'm a Formula 1 race fan from way back. The bass solo/intro to part 2 of Chains was the intro music for races for decades. This song will always remind me of F1 but more than that, is an absolute masterpiece of emotional rage made into art. The story of how this whole album came into being is also worthy of a full-length rockumentary.
I agree the studio version far surpasses this one.
One of THE albums that was in every single persons stack. It's never overrated. It's a masterpiece for eternity.
In the documentary on the making of Rumours, Stevie Nicks tells a story of how she and Christine had to hide from John McVie who was in a alcohol and drug fuelled rage and was trying to kill Christine. That's how intense the situation was when they created songs like this. How they managed to keep it together for 3 more albums is just crazy.

Fleetwood Mac's story is insane. It is sex, drugs, and rock and roll in the era of free love and domestic violence. Reading memoirs from multiple people in the band and around the band there is a lot of very serious altercations that happen. I really don't know how they all did it. Lindsey had a tendency to black out and strangle people. HIs girlfriends, his producers, (See Ken Caillat from the making of Rumours ) they have talked about these and there was an incident in Japan where Lindsey tried to trip Stevie, threw a guitar at her on stage, and then Christine went after him and clocked him backstage. @@jessholz3268
Lindsey and Stevie got physical when Lindsey didn’t want to tour. I can’t remember which album it was. I think it was the album after Mirage. Stevie lunged at Lindsey and they went outside and he thru onto a car. I believe Mick had to pull Lindsey off of her.

The fact that so many people say he's underrated belies the statement.
While I wouldn't personally place him as an underrated guitarist given the number of people who do give him credit for his undeniable talent, I would list him as being an underrated vocalist given that when FM is brought up everyone immediately thinks of Nicks.
They had to replace Buckingham with two guitarists after dismissing from him from the band.
Given where and how Lindsey is standing during the guitar solo, I think it is worth mentioning that during their break-up, Stevie allegedly had an affair/one night stand with drummer Mick Fleetwood. 👀
This live version doesn't capture how good John McVie's bass solo is, and the rhythm work together with Mick Fleetwood's drums in the studio version. The whole song definitely is a masterpiece of vocals and musicianship. Thanks Elizabeth.

How many people have posters of Clara Bow on their wall? Fleetwood Mac like everyone else, is tomorrow's nostalgia, the day after's niche curiosity, and the day after that's oblivion. People have been writing and singing about this crap for millennia, how many songs about break-ups do you know from 1425? From 1650? From 1770? From 1890? The VAST majority of everything human beings do from generation to generation is forgotten in the blink of an eye. Fleetwood Mac are no exception, they'll get an extra 30 years or so on the rest of us. The wall I built at the bottom of the garden will outlast Rumors.

You know the formula: SEX, DRUGS and ROCK 'N ROLL. And sprinkle that with unique characters, capable of channeling their inner voice, great artists and sillset. In the 70's there was cocaine available which is much better than meth and speed, which tends to dry out the person from within. A coke bender can most people get away from pretty much unscathed. Same with heroin to a degree, unless you start replace the H doses with fentanyl, methadone (those long term, hard drugs). Morphine and Heroin, if consumed in the right way, you can pretty much have a normal life until you check out. However you need a steady supplier, money to live it big, hire helpers to do certain stuff that you should avoid stealing your time from creative work.
That reaction to The Chain warrants a reaction to Silver Springs (The Dance Tour version). Stevie's voice is on point and the emotion is of this performance is off the charts. Also, Amanda Marshall's Beautiful Goodbye (Official video)...OMG!!!!
Since this is a channel focused on vocals it is amazing you haven't listened to more of Fleetwood Mac. No matter if they aren't someone's favorite genre, it can't be denied there were three incredible and talented voices paired with quality musicians. You can't go wrong reacting to any of their songs because of that.
Exactly! I’m elated as I’ve been trying to get my comments seen on every video I watch on this channel with an attempt to get some Fleetwood Mac reviews. There’s something about all their voices, both on their own, and together in harmony, that absolutely tickles me. One of my favourite bands of all time. I’m just so sad I was never able to catch them live! 😭 RIP Christine McVie.
Also 3 incredible voices which harmonize so naturally. Dreams, Little Lies and Seven Wonders are all fantastic examples of this off the top of my head, no doubt that there will be countless more examples.
Stevie, Lindsay, and Christine all write songs and sing lead on their own songs. Stevie has that husky, dark, witchy voice, Lindsay has that rock voice, and Christine has the most pure, angelic voice. They couldn't be more different, and yet they work together so amazingly well. You need to react to a LOT of their songs - literally any song from Rumors is amazing and very different from the next. The Chain was the only song on the album that was written by the entire band "working together" - though as you point out, they weren't working together very well during that time, so it took a very long time to complete.
Some bands are just too much talent for one band. Fleetwood Mac was 3 bands in one. The Beatles were 3 bands in one. Styx was 2 bands in one. Pink Floyd was 2 bands in one. The Eagles were 3 bands in one. There were others.
Lindsey's hat is the real star here. How it stays on is an act of god

Radio 5 Live still uses it for their F1 coverage.
Fleetwood Mac's 'Songbird' is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written, and an analysis would be a great tribute to Christine McVie who we sadly lost a few months ago.
She was a wonderful performer and writer who was often overshadowed by Stevie and Lindsey.

It's SO fascinating to watch those two on stage! As a group, they can instinctively fall into a harmony, but the subtexts of the way they're singing is EVERYTHING. The push and pull of the way they each use volume to accent various phrases, their actual phrasing especially Lindsay's, their presence on stage, the way they look at each other. They're having a SCREAMING MATCH at each other, and they're using the same words!
And poor Christine was just trying to weave through the middle and hold it all together, musically speaking.
What's really amazing is that this performance was recorded some five years after the breakups and original recording, and all that tension and venom was still there after all that time

Rumours is arguably one of the best albums ever made. It's an album born of betrayal, heartbreak and cocaine. What a masterpiece.
Also, people think Taylor Swift is genius for writing about her bad relationships. Stevie Nicks not only wrote about her bad relationship, but made the guy she was writing about sing it. THAT is genius!

To be slightly more precise, the guy she was writing about wrote a few back. Hers are more wistful, generally, but he wrote 'Go Your Own Way' and made *her* sing it. If we're talking vindictive, that's it right there...and it's a better song.

Seeing Lindsey lead The Mac live is one of my favorite concert memories of all-time. Mr. Buckingham is an absolute force of nature with a guitar in his hand on a stage.
Years later they opened their reunion concert with The Chain. With emotions less raw, it is a more cohesive piece. The reunion album is The Dance. Amazing.
I was introduced to The Chain on the Dance album. This older rendition is almost unrecognizable, but perhaps more genuine.
Lindsey Buckingham's "Big Love" live really spotlights his vocal and guitar playing talents, one of a kind.
And Stevie Nicks is my favourite vocalist of all time, every song she sings is mesmerising.
Yep, I've seen Lindsey sing Big Love several times in solo concerts with that incredible guitar playing in a small intimate venue, and his manic intensity in both his singing and playing is something to behold live and up close.

Christine at the same time sings 'songbrrd' and 'you make loving fun' which is about her new boyfriend and John play bass on the song. Crazy stuff. I loved Christine's voice.
Rumors was a fantastic album that has really stood the test of time. I can still listen to it from beginning to end even 45 years later.

I fully expected this to be an analysis of the Rumours album recording but the fact that you're analyzing the Mirage tour is insane. Completely out of left field choice. But goddamn it's a good one... Lindsey and Stevie literally fighting for vocal dominance. Meanwhile, Stevie and Lindsey still love each other but hate each other in the moment…. They definitely put the fun in dysfunction.

Damn. One super-charged onstage performance. I’ve never seen such overt animosity between band members while still going through with playing the song. True story: a Fleetwood Mac gig was sort of my first concert. Mom was pregnant with me when she and dad attended it. And I’ve been told that somehow I picked up on the drum patterns and was actually kicking along with them.
Matthew, I have a daughter (now 46) who is a Fleetwood Mac baby, too! I was 8 months pregnant in the fall of '76 and saw FM during their tour of Fleetwood Mac, Fleetwood Mac (also known as.the white album).

This is the first video I saw of them performing this song live, and I saw the raw hate they were just throwing at each other. It hit me so incredibly hard because that type of intense hate only comes from an equally intense love that was ripped apart. (Cocaine also has a huge part in this performance btw!) I love how they are just screaming the words at each other, and the rage and pain they both feel only add to the performance in a way that polished technique never could.
Stevie has recently went into detail about her break up. Cocaine was a factor, but perceived betrayal at all levels also. Turns out if Lindsey is being truthful, nothing really happened.. Jealousy and drugs ripped them apart.

Fleetwood mac has some absolutely timeless albums, with many classics. But their live shows are where they really showed off their talent. Lindsey doing "big love" by himself is one of the most impressive guitar performances I have seen from anyone, and he's doing it while pouring his soul into the vocals. There's some live performances of Rhiannon where stevie is out of this world. There's a live version or 2 out there of "I'm so afraid" where Lindsey is just unbelievable. All the while you got a drummer with so much energy, and a bassist keeping everything glued together and Christine (rip) who just elevated the whole thing.
Considering that you haven't heard this song before in it's studio incarnation, it's interesting that you were drawn to Stevie's "Ahhhhhh" and "Chaaaaiiin" cries at the end of the choruses: "The way she's committing to it... I feel like that moment is pure artistry." On the recordings, the chorus just ends there, without her singing. For a fan of their music, hearing these wail-like lines come unexpectedly gives the impression that she improvised this, that it's just an intense emotional reaction to Lindsey's aggressiveness. In the context of the album version, these moments are just heartbreaking. -Tom

This began as a Christine McVie song called "Keep Me There," which is available on the expanded edition of Rumours. Nicks gave them the lyrics for the verses, Lindsey Buckinghan and Christine McVie wrote the music and the chorus lyrics, Lindsey added the guitar over the ending, and "The Chain" as we know it was born The ending was the only thing left from McVie’s original track; we ended calling it “The Chain” because it was a bunch of pieces.
John McVie's bassline should also be mentioned.

Later Lindsey asked Stevie for and the chorus lyrics and she complained he was ripping the heart out of her song and didn't care. (the monster) Later her story changed and she said it was her idea to give them the lyrics because Lindsey and Christine were stuck. LOL

McVie is a monster bass player. All three vocalists were amazing. Fleetwood is a very, very good drummer. It say a lot that the guitar player, Peter Green, named his band after the rhythm section.
What Fleetwood Mac became with Nicks and Buckingham is a much different proposition from what you got with Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer. Oh, Well.

@@mmahon10 There were really several distinct incarnations of the band with each new member (Bob Welch and Danny Kirwan, for example) who came and went contributing to the "patina." Contrast early Mac with the one that followed Peter Green's LSD-fueled freak-out ("Oh, Well" and "The Green Manalishi).
An amazing song, and particularly good performance of it.
What many people might not know, especially if you're not from the UK, is the last section of the song, from the bassline and the build up and into Lindsey's guitar solo, was used as the TV theme tune to Formula 1 motorcar racing for many years through the 80's and 90's. There's a whole generation of British people who many not even be all that aware of Fleetwood Mac's music, but who have such an ingrained connection in their memory between those bass notes, the sound of Formula 1 engines, and Murray Walker's unique commentary voice.
Which is why it's so hard to listen to whilst driving in a 30mph zone! 😂

Had the pleasure of seeing them live. Did not realize how amazing a musician Lindsay Buckingham until that moment. Hands down one of the most captivating performers I have ever seen.

These folks were always the monarchs of "I wrote this song about how much I hate you, you're gonna sing it with me and it's gonna sell a million copies"
But if you watch their later performances it's clear that they love each other too, even after all the bonkers stuff they did to each other. I love that particular recording of Songbird especially, but then, I'm a big fan of Christine McVie. But they also do really cool versions of Silver Spring, this song, Tusk, and You Make Loving Fun (my favorite little bit of story about the wilder days of the band is that Christine wrote this song about her affair with the lighting guy but convinced John it was about her new dog)

Oh. My. Goodness. Before JUST now, I had only heard the studio version of this, either playing the LP (yes, I'm old) or on the radio. This live version may suffer a LITTLE in the mixing, but what difference in how the emotion comes through!! The phrase, "DAMN your love, DAMN your lies..." Wow. So strong. Combined with the look? Fire. I REALLY enjoyed both hearing the live version for the first time... AND hearing your laser-like focus and analysis. Great reaction!
this concert was in 1982, i was front row for this, and to this day, the "Mirage" Concert is Still my favorite Concert of all time, and i have been to many a great concerts in my day, there will never be another Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey is like no other guitar player, in my opinion he is the best!, and Stevie is just a force of Nature!, Mick is also a Character all his own, love watching him play, together they just can't be beat, in my opinion..
It is simply one of the most raw, honest and powerful expressions of emotion through the art of music, ever!
The bass break in this is best known in the UK as the theme music for the Formula 1 on telly.

If you want intensity and the breakup and contempt dynamic, "Silver Spring" from the live show "The Dance" is the way to go. The way Stevie and Buckingham lock eyes towards the end of the song is intense.

I saw somewhere that Stevie Nicks is the best female vocalist of all time. Someone else mentioned she's not even the best female vocalist in Fleetwood Mac. I tend to agree. Never a huge fan of Nicks.
One of my favorite things about this performance is that starting at the bass solo (which is the whole reason the song exists) Mick’s drumming makes the whole thing feel like a train that is constantly picking up speed and could crash off the rails at any second.
The entire "Rumors" album from start to finish is incredible. Another killer tune from it dealing with Stevie and Lindsey's breakup is "Go Your Own Way". Rick Beato did a killer "What Makes This Song Great" on it. There are tons of breakup songs, but that one really hits with the lyrics and the melody. People use the term masterpiece to describe many albums, but Rumors, IMO, sits above them all. I'm a hardcore metal and hard rock guy, and it shocks people when I tell them Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors" is my favorite album of all time. It's almost too good! I have yet to find anybody who doesnt get themselves a copy after hearing it for the first time. Even in the era of dowloads and pirating albums, people still connect with the album. Truly a timeless gem!
Their ultimate break up song is "Go Your Own Way" which was written specifically about their relationship; they both wrote specific lyrics jabbing at the other.
And don't forget “dream” as an reponse to "Go Your Own Way".

Another really great live performance to watch by Fleetwood Mac is absolutely Silver Springs. Stevie straight up looks like she's casting a spell while singing it. It's mesmerizing to watch.

Exactly! We need an analysis of Big Love. I’m glad I’ve seen so many others suggesting it as well. It’s one of my favourite songs of all time. ESPECIALLY that live performance in The Dance. Gives me goosebumps every single time.
I have tried learning it guitar before but I could only get to 3/4 speed and some parts are seemingly impossible for me. It’s unbelievable he can sing that outstanding and play something so insanely complicated like it’s nothing.
3 fantastic singers who were also 3 fantastic songwriters in the same band at the same time. Fleetwood Mac have had many brilliant members throughout the years, but this is my favourite lineup.
I may be a headbanger at heart, but as my mother was an obsessed Fleetwood Mac fan, I was not going to enter adulthood without knowing their classic albums inside and out. You can’t go wrong with any song on Rumours but this has to be my favorite if you forced me to pick one.
I've always loved how each singer so obviously had their own identities, but melded together so beautifully they become one entity together. That rarely happens, if ever.

Probably Stevie's best performance
A great choice for a first foray into Fleetwood Mac! It has such a great driving feeling to it and such a neat number of change-ups... & in their harmonizing has always been amazing. I dig songs in minor keys so much, and that's probably why this is one of my favorites by them. You covered a lot of this, but you know.
I recently got to see Stevie live, it was a bucket list thing to see as she has been in my holy trinity since I was 5 years old... and she's still got it, let me tell you; that woman can absolutely wreck you. She did Ladslide, which she's obviously a few times before for other people, but this time she did it for Christine... and I was sobbing by the end. Especially when her voice broke, and you knew she was crying, too.
My favorite version of this is the 1997 The Dance concert. The emotion is still there but without the screaming so you get more actual singing. Silvers Springs from that concert is also great.
I grew up with Fleetwood Mac. Every summer or Christmas holidays. Whatever the case it was always this group my dad would play. They never got old. Then I grew up and got married. My husband had heard of them but was never a fan. So I trained him on the songs. Now every time one of their songs come on he'll turn to me. "Hey Shan this song is called so and so from Fleetwood Mac. I am so happy and proud. I am 33 years old and still Fleetwood Mac is one of my favorite groups. Love you guys forever and always

I had a vocal teacher when I was obtaining my music minor, who was quite the young snob and according to her, the only music that counted was classical. She absolutely poo-pooed rock, so to sit here and see you as a trained opera singer, get blown away by singers of all calibers, well, it's just so refreshing.
We had the Rumours album on vinyl as a kid, and this song (along with the rest of the album) was played so much that we had to replace the vinyl TWICE. Probably one of the best albums ever produced and every song is amazing.

Lindsey Buckingham is a criminally underrated guitarist. What you are watching is finger picking at its finest, as he doesn’t use a guitar pick. Everything about this guy from the singing to the guitar playing is raw in the moment emotion supported by years and decades of craft.
Years and decades of craft that was supported by the physical and emotional labor of Stevie financially and emotionally supporting him!

I'd recommend the Buckingham/Nicks album made before the two joined Fleetwood Mac. "Frozen Love" is itself a masterpiece by two great young talents. It's also the cut that sparked them joining FM. Mick Fleetwood was in a neighboring studio room while these two were recording that song. He heard Buckingham's guitar solo and immediately knew he wanted them in FM. He approached Lindsay to join them alone but Lindsay insisted he and Stevie both belonged. The rest is rock history.

I listened to Buckingham Nicks album so much I wore out the grooves. It's a shame it's out of print. That duo poured their hearts out on that one. And Lindsey has a such a great voice. She he's voice was sweeter then and less husky before she got throat nodules (but she's still great just deeper voice now). They were great together before they were apart.
