All coked out, sleeping with each other, partying all night, and still created one of the greatest albums ever made. Fleetwood Mac is truly a legendary group. RIP Christine.
So this gal is cool in that she is technically awesome but she never talks about anything negative about some bands. Last time I looked this was in the top ten best selling albums of all time. How they recorded it was like right there with Pink Floyd and the Beatles, Beach Boys and the evolution of the 8 track, ect. This is hardly a critical analysis. Stevie Nicks' nose is pretty messed up from coke at this time I think? I don't know. There is so much missing here. I do love this gal but I am just saying.
Yeah, and this performance is just at the tail end of when they were the biggest band in the world. All their affairs have come out in the open, all the divorces are through, and they're still attached together by The Chain that is Fleetwood Mac, too big to quit.
Whenever he left, Mick had to hire two guitarists to take his place. Just an amazing player. I'm sure you have already but watch "big love at Saban" and EPIC RIFFS | Fleetwood Mac - Why it's so difficult to play. Truly an amazing skill.
Dude has skills that dwarf most shredders but never gets the recognition. I think it's because being a great writer/singer/performer were his priorities.
Rolling Stone mag rated the top 100 guitarists of all time, and Lindsey barely made the list. I mean come on...how can there be 99 better guitar players?
Man… Lindsey was on another planet in this one. He found something here on stage. He was all the way in. Flow state times 1000. You could feel his soul through this performance
Never before has a group of people hated each other so much and yet made such compelling music. You'll notice that Stevie always holds her note put longer than Lindsey. It's a total power move. It's Stevie always needing to have the final say.
It is quite amazing how this group made these songs and stayed together as long as they did. Truly and purely for the music. Quite incredible AND they probably did as much drugs as any band you can name. But it all comes across in the live performances and you can see the angst and I think almost uniquely it makes for some of the best live performances.
@@invisiblekid99 - What comes across in this particular performance is... massive cocaine abuse. This may well be the worst live version of this song I've ever heard. Not sure why she picked this version. The vocals are a mess.
@@Mr.Ekshin Do you not listen, Elizabeth picks her songs based on viewer recommendations. While this is not "the best" performance, it is full of compassion/hatred which is why people asked her to react to it.
Read the book "Making Rumors: The Inside Story of the Classic Fleetwood Mac Album" by Ken Caillat who was the engineer on the album (as well as Colbie's father). Maybe they'll make the movie out of it.
Someone on the internet said that Taylor Swift writes about her exes but Stevie not only writes about him, but makes him stand on stage beside her while she sings about him!
The entire Rumours album is a masterpiece. If you haven’t listened to Fleetwood Mac, you really owe it to yourself to listen to the entire thing. I’ve been a huge fan of the band and their solo work since the 70s. By the way, speaking of venom, check out the photo of their Rolling Stone cover that was released around the same time. It’s amazing.
IIRC something like 7 of the 11 songs were released as singles (don't quote me on numbers, I'm far too lazy to look things up just for this post). It should have been the whole thing. I cannot understand how the hell they managed to actually record and release that album, given everything that was happening in their relationships at the time, but it's truly a gift to the world.
Buckingham was self-taught. He skill was so extraordinary that when he left the group, it took more than one lead guitarist to perform what he had done as a single player
The big hole was filling his parts in minutes. He left them hanging with concert dates contracted. I agree LB is the most underrated guitarist, he’s also a controlling, micro managing, narcissistic, abusive jerk. I can’t think of a song LB wrote where he hands off the lead to another singer. The lyrics for this song were written by Nicks. The music is stitching together of Chris’ “Keep Me …” Buckingham’s “Lola My Love” and a some original riffs of John and Mick. But those lyrics are from the song Nicks wrote. The original lyrics are dark and sorrow filled. The Buckingham version is just angry. But he manages to steal the lead, like he does in Don’t Stop and Crystal, both other writers in the group. But he produced…
@@mikelogan5629 He didn't leave them hanging; they fired him. He told them the dates didn't work for him as he had other commitments so they punted him and carried on.
I worked in Production on a Viacom event at the Theatre under Madison Square Garden many years ago. In rehearsal that day, this song hit me like a ton of bricks and was left in tears and speechless. They all performed this song as if their lives depended on it..! I needed to take a break and recover so I could continue my work that day. In almost 25 years of working on concerts, Live TV Award Shows and other Productions, I have NEVER been that deeply moved by a performance. And did I say that this was only rehearsal where artists usually "Save" the good stuff for the main show..? Holy crap. Watching this clip reminds me of that day SO MUCH that I'm feeling it all over again. It was magical - and I was honored by being able to tell them how raw and real this was for me after rehearsal was over. Nice day at the office !!
Wow, what an amazing experience to have witnessed such a performance AND to be able to tell them how much it moved you, that's just awesome!! Thanks for sharing!
This concert did not need stage pyrotechnics. The performers did that. Lindsey, shouting his pain, Stevie & Christine telling him to get over it, and the long-suffering rhythm section reminding them "guys, keep it together"
@@Muck006 how about stevie stabbing him with a broken wine bottle after he tried to stop her drinking binge one night. neither were anywhere near innocent.
Stevie, Lindsay, and Christine all write songs and sing lead on their own songs. Stevie has that husky, dark, witchy voice, Lindsay has that rock voice, and Christine has the most pure, angelic voice. They couldn't be more different, and yet they work together so amazingly well. You need to react to a LOT of their songs - literally any song from Rumors is amazing and very different from the next. The Chain was the only song on the album that was written by the entire band "working together" - though as you point out, they weren't working together very well during that time, so it took a very long time to complete.
Some bands are just too much talent for one band. Fleetwood Mac was 3 bands in one. The Beatles were 3 bands in one. Styx was 2 bands in one. Pink Floyd was 2 bands in one. The Eagles were 3 bands in one. There were others.
Not only the story and performances are great, the studio version has one of the best sound quality, mastering and production I've heard. It's one of my go-to songs for testing headphones and speakers.
I wish I could have seen them live! Rumours is a desert island album, every track is deep and rich-The Chain is a masterpiece for sure. Truly miss our "SongBird" Christy McVie... Demonstrates how Love and Heartbreak create some of the best music ever, nothing fuels creativity as the struggles of the heart
It is fantastic, but if you want to test speakers and headphones you should use the recording most professionals use to calibrate sound equipment, the Aja album by Steely Dan. It is the best overall recording in music, period!
In the documentary on the making of Rumours, Stevie Nicks tells a story of how she and Christine had to hide from John McVie who was in a alcohol and drug fuelled rage and was trying to kill Christine. That's how intense the situation was when they created songs like this. How they managed to keep it together for 3 more albums is just crazy.
Fleetwood Mac's story is insane. It is sex, drugs, and rock and roll in the era of free love and domestic violence. Reading memoirs from multiple people in the band and around the band there is a lot of very serious altercations that happen. I really don't know how they all did it. Lindsey had a tendency to black out and strangle people. HIs girlfriends, his producers, (See Ken Caillat from the making of Rumours ) they have talked about these and there was an incident in Japan where Lindsey tried to trip Stevie, threw a guitar at her on stage, and then Christine went after him and clocked him backstage. @@jessholz3268
Lindsey and Stevie got physical when Lindsey didn’t want to tour. I can’t remember which album it was. I think it was the album after Mirage. Stevie lunged at Lindsey and they went outside and he thru onto a car. I believe Mick had to pull Lindsey off of her.
I think you might be talking about when Linds left the band? Stevie attacked him and then he chased her and she said my brother and dad will kill you if you kill me. INSANE.@@StilettoCutsQuick.
@@Denbrr You are probably correct. It was a long time ago that I heard the story. I may have two stories mixed into one. Thank you. I wanted to explain that they have gotten physical with each other. Crazy times. LOL
When Lindsey says, "I can STILL hear you saying, you will NEVER break the chain"", and Stevie replies with the declining vocal slide, ""Ahhhhhh"... The raw emotions are pouring out! (He accusing her; She feeling remorse and regret at having said it.) The Guitar solo represents to me the virtual "sea" of emotional turmoil of grief after a serious breakup. I can't imagine having to work in a group with someone who's breaking up with you. They're there, all the time, in the public eye! yee-ouch!
100% agree. I'm a Formula 1 race fan from way back. The bass solo/intro to part 2 of Chains was the intro music for races for decades. This song will always remind me of F1 but more than that, is an absolute masterpiece of emotional rage made into art. The story of how this whole album came into being is also worthy of a full-length rockumentary.
Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac from 1976. It feels like Stevie Nicks goes into a trance and casting a spell while performing a ritual. It is my favorite performance to watch
I was thinking this version of Rhianon, Songbird live and Looking Out For Love solo as examples of Stevie, Christine and Lindsey doing their own thing.
This live version doesn't capture how good John McVie's bass solo is, and the rhythm work together with Mick Fleetwood's drums in the studio version. The whole song definitely is a masterpiece of vocals and musicianship. Thanks Elizabeth.
Totally agree, I was a bit bummed she was listening to a live version, it all sounds off after having the studio version imprinted into my brain. This live is just not as good to me.
McVie is a monster bass player. All three vocalists were amazing. Fleetwood is a very, very good drummer. It say a lot that the guitar player, Peter Green, named his band after the rhythm section.
@@mmahon10 There were really several distinct incarnations of the band with each new member (Bob Welch and Danny Kirwan, for example) who came and went contributing to the "patina." Contrast early Mac with the one that followed Peter Green's LSD-fueled freak-out ("Oh, Well" and "The Green Manalishi).
Rumours is arguably one of the best albums ever made. It's an album born of betrayal, heartbreak and cocaine. What a masterpiece. Also, people think Taylor Swift is genius for writing about her bad relationships. Stevie Nicks not only wrote about her bad relationship, but made the guy she was writing about sing it. THAT is genius!
To be slightly more precise, the guy she was writing about wrote a few back. Hers are more wistful, generally, but he wrote 'Go Your Own Way' and made *her* sing it. If we're talking vindictive, that's it right there...and it's a better song.
@@metalmark1214 Lyndsey is the real talent ,singer, songwriter, and guitarist ,she wouldnt even be there if he didnt insist on her going with him,she wouldnt even be in Fleetwood mac.
Lindsey Buckingham is a criminally underrated guitarist. What you are watching is finger picking at its finest, as he doesn’t use a guitar pick. Everything about this guy from the singing to the guitar playing is raw in the moment emotion supported by years and decades of craft.
What a song! What an album! And this solo is the proof that Lindsey is one of the most underrated guitarrists in the history of rock and roll! Great choice!
While I wouldn't personally place him as an underrated guitarist given the number of people who do give him credit for his undeniable talent, I would list him as being an underrated vocalist given that when FM is brought up everyone immediately thinks of Nicks.
Given where and how Lindsey is standing during the guitar solo, I think it is worth mentioning that during their break-up, Stevie allegedly had an affair/one night stand with drummer Mick Fleetwood. 👀
Since this is a channel focused on vocals it is amazing you haven't listened to more of Fleetwood Mac. No matter if they aren't someone's favorite genre, it can't be denied there were three incredible and talented voices paired with quality musicians. You can't go wrong reacting to any of their songs because of that.
Exactly! I’m elated as I’ve been trying to get my comments seen on every video I watch on this channel with an attempt to get some Fleetwood Mac reviews. There’s something about all their voices, both on their own, and together in harmony, that absolutely tickles me. One of my favourite bands of all time. I’m just so sad I was never able to catch them live! 😭 RIP Christine McVie.
Also 3 incredible voices which harmonize so naturally. Dreams, Little Lies and Seven Wonders are all fantastic examples of this off the top of my head, no doubt that there will be countless more examples.
That reaction to The Chain warrants a reaction to Silver Springs (The Dance Tour version). Stevie's voice is on point and the emotion is of this performance is off the charts. Also, Amanda Marshall's Beautiful Goodbye (Official video)...OMG!!!!
You know the formula: SEX, DRUGS and ROCK 'N ROLL. And sprinkle that with unique characters, capable of channeling their inner voice, great artists and sillset. In the 70's there was cocaine available which is much better than meth and speed, which tends to dry out the person from within. A coke bender can most people get away from pretty much unscathed. Same with heroin to a degree, unless you start replace the H doses with fentanyl, methadone (those long term, hard drugs). Morphine and Heroin, if consumed in the right way, you can pretty much have a normal life until you check out. However you need a steady supplier, money to live it big, hire helpers to do certain stuff that you should avoid stealing your time from creative work.
I fully expected this to be an analysis of the Rumours album recording but the fact that you're analyzing the Mirage tour is insane. Completely out of left field choice. But goddamn it's a good one... Lindsey and Stevie literally fighting for vocal dominance. Christine keeping her calm and looking at the toddlers like a disgruntled mother with better things to do than listen to two babies yell at each other. John and Mick in the background like "Guys for fuck's sake knock it off or we'll play over you." IT'S A MASTERPIECE OF A COLLECTION OF DISASTROUS, TRAUMA BONDED HUMANS rip chris, fly high songbird
@@viadharmawheel Hyperbole much? I doubt it unless all the nations of the world are erased in the next 40 years. How many fans are there of Jelly Roll Morton? How many people have posters of Clara Bow on their wall? Fleetwood Mac like everyone else, is tomorrow's nostalgia, the day after's niche curiosity, and the day after that's oblivion. People have been writing and singing about this crap for millennia, how many songs about break-ups do you know from 1425? From 1650? From 1770? From 1890? The VAST majority of everything human beings do from generation to generation is forgotten in the blink of an eye. Fleetwood Mac are no exception, they'll get an extra 30 years or so on the rest of us. The wall I built at the bottom of the garden will outlast Rumors.
Fleetwood Mac's 'Songbird' is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written, and an analysis would be a great tribute to Christine McVie who we sadly lost a few months ago.
That's pure talent. No auto tune , just pure talent. That's what this generation doesn't understand. The artist of their time had to really be able to sing and play!
Lindsey Buckingham's "Big Love" live really spotlights his vocal and guitar playing talents, one of a kind. And Stevie Nicks is my favourite vocalist of all time, every song she sings is mesmerising.
Yep, I've seen Lindsey sing Big Love several times in solo concerts with that incredible guitar playing in a small intimate venue, and his manic intensity in both his singing and playing is something to behold live and up close.
"Stevie Nicks is my favourite vocalist of all time" ... I love her voice, except when she is doing the cutesy little girl thing, and then I find it makes me cringe. There are a couple of songs on Tango in the Night that she totally ruins with that for me.
This began as a Christine McVie song called "Keep Me There," which is available on the expanded edition of Rumours. Nicks gave them the lyrics for the verses, Lindsey Buckinghan and Christine McVie wrote the music and the chorus lyrics, Lindsey added the guitar over the ending, and "The Chain" as we know it was born The ending was the only thing left from McVie’s original track; we ended calling it “The Chain” because it was a bunch of pieces.
@@myrrhfishify7743 Not the original original. It's a completely different song except for the chorus lyrics and the title. As said it started out as McVie's Keep Me There. Later Lindsey asked Stevie for and the chorus lyrics and she complained he was ripping the heart out of her song and didn't care. (the monster) Later her story changed and she said it was her idea to give them the lyrics because Lindsey and Christine were stuck. LOL
Christine McVie actually has one on the most beautiful voices ever. You should listen to Songbird, its just her and a piano, amazing voice amazing song.
Years later they opened their reunion concert with The Chain. With emotions less raw, it is a more cohesive piece. The reunion album is The Dance. Amazing.
Christine at the same time sings 'songbrrd' and 'you make loving fun' which is about her new boyfriend and John play bass on the song. Crazy stuff. I loved Christine's voice.
It's SO fascinating to watch those two on stage! As a group, they can instinctively fall into a harmony, but the subtexts of the way they're singing is EVERYTHING. The push and pull of the way they each use volume to accent various phrases, their actual phrasing especially Lindsay's, their presence on stage, the way they look at each other. They're having a SCREAMING MATCH at each other, and they're using the same words! And poor Christine was just trying to weave through the middle and hold it all together, musically speaking.
For decades this was the sound of Formula1 in the UK and across the world. It is especially visceral in this performance and iconic across the globe. Really fun breakdown. It's great to see you delve into one of the greatest bands of all time.
I only later found out it was Fleetwood Mac but yes this to me was always the high octane theme music to the Formula 1 racing as long as i can remember (only recently they dropped it, their loss!)...with Murrary Walkers commentary, and and and....... James Hunt keeping him right 👍😁
@@bellslinki C4 didn't drop it from what I heard. Sky tried to get it exclusive to them and rights holders got bored (no doubt turning down a fat stack of cash) and said no-one is having it.
Thank you! I feel like I'm sitting with my neighbor who is professionally trained in music having a genuine conversation about music we both love. Thank you for being so relatable!
What's really amazing is that this performance was recorded some five years after the breakups and original recording, and all that tension and venom was still there after all that time
This is the first video I saw of them performing this song live, and I saw the raw hate they were just throwing at each other. It hit me so incredibly hard because that type of intense hate only comes from an equally intense love that was ripped apart. (Cocaine also has a huge part in this performance btw!) I love how they are just screaming the words at each other, and the rage and pain they both feel only add to the performance in a way that polished technique never could.
Stevie has recently went into detail about her break up. Cocaine was a factor, but perceived betrayal at all levels also. Turns out if Lindsey is being truthful, nothing really happened.. Jealousy and drugs ripped them apart.
These folks were always the monarchs of "I wrote this song about how much I hate you, you're gonna sing it with me and it's gonna sell a million copies" But if you watch their later performances it's clear that they love each other too, even after all the bonkers stuff they did to each other. If you want to go on a Fleetwood Mac journey (either on the channel or on your own time, though I would LOVE to see more videos on their stuff) you should watch their live "The Dance" performance from, I think 1996? I love that particular recording of Songbird especially, but then, I'm a big fan of Christine McVie. But they also do really cool versions of Silver Spring, this song, Tusk, and You Make Loving Fun (my favorite little bit of story about the wilder days of the band is that Christine wrote this song about her affair with the lighting guy but convinced John it was about her new dog)
Taylor Swift dumps a guy and writes a song about how much of a dick they are. Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham break up and write an entire album about how much they hate each other and make each other play the entire thing for decades to follow...Taylor ain't even in the same league😂😂😂
My favorite quote about Stevie Nicks: "Taylor Swift writes whiny songs about all her ex's; Stevie Nicks mad her ex play guitar for her while she sang songs about what an a*****e he was." (Don't be hatin', I actually like Taylor Swift.)
Considering that you haven't heard this song before in it's studio incarnation, it's interesting that you were drawn to Stevie's "Ahhhhhh" and "Chaaaaiiin" cries at the end of the choruses: "The way she's committing to it... I feel like that moment is pure artistry." On the recordings, the chorus just ends there, without her singing. For a fan of their music, hearing these wail-like lines come unexpectedly gives the impression that she improvised this, that it's just an intense emotional reaction to Lindsey's aggressiveness. In the context of the album version, these moments are just heartbreaking. -Tom
I love this performance because those people singing to each other are in the middle of breaking up with each other & singing about their break-up...it's like the most meta, reality, performance a group of artists ever cobbled together.
They have a lot of great live renditions, Sisters of the Moon live from this same Mirage 1982 tour is incredible, the recorded version of Sisters of the Moon is actual doo doo compared to that live one
I think "Songbird" would be an excellent follow up for this. Christine sings it and her voice is heavenly on it, she doesn't get nearly enough credit for the groups success.
I saw somewhere that Stevie Nicks is the best female vocalist of all time. Someone else mentioned she's not even the best female vocalist in Fleetwood Mac. I tend to agree. Never a huge fan of Nicks.
Damn. One super-charged onstage performance. I’ve never seen such overt animosity between band members while still going through with playing the song. True story: a Fleetwood Mac gig was sort of my first concert. Mom was pregnant with me when she and dad attended it. And I’ve been told that somehow I picked up on the drum patterns and was actually kicking along with them.
Matthew, I have a daughter (now 46) who is a Fleetwood Mac baby, too! I was 8 months pregnant in the fall of '76 and saw FM during their tour of Fleetwood Mac, Fleetwood Mac (also known as.the white album). I almost named my daughter Rhiannon...lol
Stevie was sleeping with Mick, Mick was married, Lindsey was sleeping with Stevie’s best friend, Stevie and Lindsey were on again off again since high school…..Christine was going through a divorce…. Meanwhile, Stevie and Lindsey still love each other but hate each other in the moment…. They definitely put the fun in dysfunction.
@@jayannakelley9051 i'd heard that it was Mick who slept with Sara (hence the song) while 'he' was with Stevie ............... So much intrigue and so many versions
Breakups can indeed lead to awesome things. My wife and I were together for almost 2yrs when we broke up (many reasons). A few months later, we started periodically hanging out again (same friend group). Over time we learned how to be best friends again, and restarted our relationship. Six months after that we were married. Today, we're still best friends, and just as in love as we were over 30yrs ago when we said "I do". 😊
Their ultimate break up song is "Go Your Own Way" which was written specifically about their relationship; they both wrote specific lyrics jabbing at the other.
I'd love to see you experience watching "Big Love" for the first time (the live version from "The Dance"). Just Lindsey and his guitar. His playing and singing is unreal.
Oh. My. Goodness. Before JUST now, I had only heard the studio version of this, either playing the LP (yes, I'm old) or on the radio. This live version may suffer a LITTLE in the mixing, but what difference in how the emotion comes through!! The phrase, "DAMN your love, DAMN your lies..." Wow. So strong. Combined with the look? Fire. I REALLY enjoyed both hearing the live version for the first time... AND hearing your laser-like focus and analysis. Great reaction!
This album "rumours" is one of the best albums of all time. The writing and musicianship is particularly brilliant. Stevie and lindsay's vocals plus bits by Christine are just sublime. Fantastic album. 💙👍

Seeing Lindsey lead The Mac live is one of my favorite concert memories of all-time. Mr. Buckingham is an absolute force of nature with a guitar in his hand on a stage.
If you want intensity and the breakup and contempt dynamic, "Silver Spring" from the live show "The Dance" is the way to go. The way Stevie and Buckingham lock eyes towards the end of the song is intense.
One of the greatest bands of all time, with possibly the best live performance you will ever see. Lindsey Buckinghan is an absolute genius and probably the most underrated guitarist of all time. Magic.
Fleetwood mac has some absolutely timeless albums, with many classics. But their live shows are where they really showed off their talent. Lindsey doing "big love" by himself is one of the most impressive guitar performances I have seen from anyone, and he's doing it while pouring his soul into the vocals. There's some live performances of Rhiannon where stevie is out of this world. There's a live version or 2 out there of "I'm so afraid" where Lindsey is just unbelievable. All the while you got a drummer with so much energy, and a bassist keeping everything glued together and Christine (rip) who just elevated the whole thing.
An amazing song, and particularly good performance of it. What many people might not know, especially if you're not from the UK, is the last section of the song, from the bassline and the build up and into Lindsey's guitar solo, was used as the TV theme tune to Formula 1 motorcar racing for many years through the 80's and 90's. There's a whole generation of British people who many not even be all that aware of Fleetwood Mac's music, but who have such an ingrained connection in their memory between those bass notes, the sound of Formula 1 engines, and Murray Walker's unique commentary voice.
One of the most painful things with this is that Stevie and Lindsey still loved each other like no one else existed, but they just couldn't make it work. Its' almost like their passion got in the way of their love. Lindsey's guitar style is all self taught and unique. I'm not sure if it has been or ever will be duplicated. His picking hand is almost like having 2 hands. His thumb is one part, his index and middle finger are a complete separate set and his ring finger and pinkie seem to operate independent of all of that. It's freakish.
Not to knock on Lindsey, but you'll find a lot of similarity in the way bluegrass banjo pickers pick (scruggs style), and sometimes their arrangements sound humanly impossible. Lindsey being able to figure this type of picking out on his own is a testament to how good he is.
Had the pleasure of seeing them live. Did not realize how amazing a musician Lindsay Buckingham until that moment. Hands down one of the most captivating performers I have ever seen.
I love Stevie and Lindsey staring straight at each other as they sing all their breakup songs at each other. Yeah, delicious emotional tension captured in music.
This makes me think Elizabeth needs to see The Civil Wars! Great harmonies, wonderful how they weave into each other, and lots of chemistry. Barton Hollow for another 'swampy' one!
Lindsey Buckingham is amazing… Big Love is just a brilliant song too… Stevie is so distinct… not many bands encapsulate that crazy life of genius musicians and how trauma and tangled emotions can lead to this amazing sound 😊
Exactly! We need an analysis of Big Love. I’m glad I’ve seen so many others suggesting it as well. It’s one of my favourite songs of all time. ESPECIALLY that live performance in The Dance. Gives me goosebumps every single time.
I have tried learning it guitar before but I could only get to 3/4 speed and some parts are seemingly impossible for me. It’s unbelievable he can sing that outstanding and play something so insanely complicated like it’s nothing.
Elizabeth, you need to do Lyndsey Buckingham playing both "Big Love" and "Go Insane" live on acoustic guitar. He got kicked out of Fleetwood Mac and he is so good on guitar that they had to hire two people to replace him.
Trouble or not he's integral to their success. Once Stevie kicked Lindsey out I wouldn't buy tickets on their tours. And yes I'd do the same if they would have toured without Stevie as well.
There's a crucible of creativity in that band if there ever was, with multiple heartbreaks. "I can still hear you saying that you'll never break the chain!". Never seen this particular video. No backing track, no dancers. Just talent. Thanks!
The entire "Rumors" album from start to finish is incredible. Another killer tune from it dealing with Stevie and Lindsey's breakup is "Go Your Own Way". Rick Beato did a killer "What Makes This Song Great" on it. There are tons of breakup songs, but that one really hits with the lyrics and the melody. People use the term masterpiece to describe many albums, but Rumors, IMO, sits above them all. I'm a hardcore metal and hard rock guy, and it shocks people when I tell them Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors" is my favorite album of all time. It's almost too good! I have yet to find anybody who doesnt get themselves a copy after hearing it for the first time. Even in the era of dowloads and pirating albums, people still connect with the album. Truly a timeless gem!
One of my favorite things about this performance is that starting at the bass solo (which is the whole reason the song exists) Mick’s drumming makes the whole thing feel like a train that is constantly picking up speed and could crash off the rails at any second.
Lindsey Buckingham is one of my favorite guitar players. His finger picking technique is amazing. He's also great at expressing feelings over guitar solos.
Love your channel Elizabeth. You always look like you are completely immersed in the song and having so much fun. The way you break down not only the vocals but the song is second to none.
Curious that the algorithm bought me straight from your reaction to Come on, Eileen - two very different songs, but both harnessing that wild tempo change energy.
One of those songs on an Album you just must have in your record collection. It is a masterclass in “how to deal with a breakup “ Love is hard if it’s lost. Love is beautiful if it is kept.
The whole album is mesmerisingly good, the writing, the musicality and the vocal performances are just almost beyond belief. The transmission of emotion throughout all of this song and others on the album is so totally on point. I have had the great good fortune to see Fleetwood Mac live on 3 occasions, the first being in 1985 so not very long after all this happened and all the angst and pain was still there in their performances on the night.
You can *feel* the thunder of their angst, love, hate, despair - tension so thick you could cut the air with a knife. Their heartbreak makes for a timeless masterpiece for the rest of us.
This is a case where you should have listened to the studio version instead of the live version. It's a very nuanced song and you can pick up more from the studio cut. By the way this is my favorite Fleetwood Mac song.
I believe you can listen to the studio version to hear the intricacies to be sure...but the emotion (and probably the drugs) are so intense in this performance it stands to reason this is a great microcosm of who the band was at this time and, therefore, is an excellent version to analyze on Valentine's Day.
I'm a huge fan of a song and the band, that I have to admit I'm kind of glad to see this version. Although I'd love to see her react to one that is more technically perfect, this is a fucking phenomenal performance in different ways
Absolutely the best breakdown of this live performance ever. So thorough and you caught so many little nuances of the performance! I discovered this performance about 5 years ago and was so blown away, I could never ever go back to the album version. Anyway, Cheers on a remarkable analysis. You should just watch it over and over again, you'll always find more. Oh, plus, you should have waited another second for Lindsey's little hello, welcome, thank you. It's awesome. How he can talk after that performance is amazing.
You should really listen to the studio version. The live version is impressive, but the studio version is more atmospheric, and the power that rises as the song continues is more robust and well-integrated.
Agreed. The live performance understandably carries much more raw energy, and brings that energy across in a much more immediate way because it was performed and recorded live, but being a live performance there's also little ability to mix and master the track; the studio version isn't just mixed and mastered, it's mixed and mastered so very well that it carries a completely different energy and the build towards that epic finale is the entire duration of the song up to that point. The way it builds on itself, undercuts itself, builds more, and the various component instrumental and vocal lines weave in and out of one another in the mix is just brilliant in a way even a phenomenal live performance can't capture. Not to say the live version is somehow worse, just that it's very successfully accomplishing different things, and the studio version being so good as well is absolutely also worth a listen.
I may be a headbanger at heart, but as my mother was an obsessed Fleetwood Mac fan, I was not going to enter adulthood without knowing their classic albums inside and out. You can’t go wrong with any song on Rumours but this has to be my favorite if you forced me to pick one.
Another really great live performance to watch by Fleetwood Mac is absolutely Silver Springs. Stevie straight up looks like she's casting a spell while singing it. It's mesmerizing to watch.
The tense drama is the insane story with this group. Forget any mundane soap opera. Their relationship story is a deep affair worthy of a Shakespeare play. Full of life lessons that will have you wondering and contemplating for a long while.
I'd recommend the Buckingham/Nicks album made before the two joined Fleetwood Mac. "Frozen Love" is itself a masterpiece by two great young talents. It's also the cut that sparked them joining FM. Mick Fleetwood was in a neighboring studio room while these two were recording that song. He heard Buckingham's guitar solo and immediately knew he wanted them in FM. He approached Lindsay to join them alone but Lindsay insisted he and Stevie both belonged. The rest is rock history.
I listened to Buckingham Nicks album so much I wore out the grooves. It's a shame it's out of print. That duo poured their hearts out on that one. And Lindsey has a such a great voice. She he's voice was sweeter then and less husky before she got throat nodules (but she's still great just deeper voice now). They were great together before they were apart.
This live version isn't a shadow of the studio recording on rumours. But, as you hear, it's sung with plenty of venom. Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham were clearly looking daggers at each other. Great tension almost makes up for what decades have done to their voices.
I'd LOVE for you to analyse 'Rhiannon', specifically their live on The Midnight Special, 1976 version! That version is one of my all time favourite performances of any song ever!! Thanks for the awesome content Elizabeth x
All coked out, sleeping with each other, partying all night, and still created one of the greatest albums ever made. Fleetwood Mac is truly a legendary group. RIP Christine.
Ha! Best comment award 😂
_Sleeping_ was one thing they were _NOT_ doing .. .. .
Its not despite of the things but because of them that the album turned out a masterpiece 😂
Lindsey is one of the most underrated guitar players of his time. He’s so so good.
Couldn't agree more. He is amazing.
And he is a true finger-style player. Most would have a time of it using a pick.
Absolutely! One of his best performances... Though I'd guess he found some white powder there... ("just a joke")
"cocaine is a helluva drug" - Rick James
He found remorse and bitterness 😂
Cocaine powder
he found COKE
Never before has a group of people hated each other so much and yet made such compelling music. You'll notice that Stevie always holds her note put longer than Lindsey. It's a total power move. It's Stevie always needing to have the final say.
It is quite amazing how this group made these songs and stayed together as long as they did. Truly and purely for the music. Quite incredible AND they probably did as much drugs as any band you can name.
But it all comes across in the live performances and you can see the angst and I think almost uniquely it makes for some of the best live performances.
Nailed it,,,,💥👍🤪
If we could get Roger Waters and David Gilmour on stage together again, you'd see some hate.
I want a “Bohemian Rhapsody” level biopic JUST about the making of Rumours. Holy crap that album is a masterpiece
There is a great Classic Albums segment on it but yeah it deserves a bigger treatment.
Read the book "Making Rumors: The Inside Story of the Classic Fleetwood Mac Album" by Ken Caillat who was the engineer on the album (as well as Colbie's father). Maybe they'll make the movie out of it.
It would probably look closer to Sid & Nancy than it would Bohemian Rhapsody.
Basically you want Boogie Nights with a few British accents thrown in.
@@88wildcat hopefully because bohemian rhapsody was trash
Someone on the internet said that Taylor Swift writes about her exes but Stevie not only writes about him, but makes him stand on stage beside her while she sings about him!
Who’s Taylor Swift?
Who cares about taylor swift?!
@gorillaglue7232 Stevie Nicks loves Taylor Swift and considers her one of the best songwriters ever. They are good friends as well.
@@luvsweinerdogs6266 my estimation of Nicks has plummeted!

I fell in love with Stevie Nicks when I saw her cavorting to Rhiannon..... yum yum yum. Has been ever since my fantasy babe. :-)
Rumours is indeed a masterpiece. Not a bad song on that album. I grew listening to that on 8-track, then cassette, then CD, etc. Never gets old.
Rumors is one of the best albums ever recorded, at any time, in any language. It is a stunningly good piece of musicianship.
One of my favorite albums all time too
Buckingham was self-taught. He skill was so extraordinary that when he left the group, it took more than one lead guitarist to perform what he had done as a single player
I saw them during the tour after Buckingham left. There were 2 guitars there And there was still a big hole in the performance.😢
And one of those guitarists was Mike Campbell, Tom Petty's guitar player who is no slouch. But yes, hard to do what Lindsey does
The big hole was filling his parts in minutes.
Mike Campbell is a killer player don’t try taking anything away from him. He had to learn the set pretty quickly the way it went down.
I had a similar response to a live performance by Harry Chapin in the 1980s working as staff at a college concert in Michigan.
Ciao🎉🇮🇹🤗
What an amazing experience, they knock me out just on the album or the tv screen, I'm not sure I'd have survived that level of closeness to such power
Gotta admit, part of me doesn't like you right now. 😂😂😂 What an amazing experience❣️
It is just a pure joy to see Stevie and Lindsey yelling at each other.
This concert did not need stage pyrotechnics. The performers did that.
Lindsey, shouting his pain, Stevie & Christine telling him to get over it, and the long-suffering rhythm section reminding them "guys, keep it together"
Lindsey shouting his pain of beating Stevie? Tough life.
Lindsay Buckingham is my spirit animal
@@Muck006 how about stevie stabbing him with a broken wine bottle after he tried to stop her drinking binge one night. neither were anywhere near innocent.
This is probably the most accurate description of this song that I've come across. Well said, sir ✌
I get the vibe that Christine is thinking to both of them "leave me out of this I've got my own drama to deal with playing bass on this song."
Also, the bass riff at the final part is amazing 😍
I wish I could have seen them live! Rumours is a desert island album, every track is deep and rich-The Chain is a masterpiece for sure. Truly miss our "SongBird" Christy McVie... Demonstrates how Love and Heartbreak create some of the best music ever, nothing fuels creativity as the struggles of the heart
Yeah. The studio version of this song is so good! I wish she would have done that version.
It is fantastic, but if you want to test speakers and headphones you should use the recording most professionals use to calibrate sound equipment, the Aja album by Steely Dan. It is the best overall recording in music, period!
@@dannyberry8725 yes, but unfortunately to get the sound quality of Aja by Steely Dan, you have to listen to the songs on Aja by Steely Dan.
🤯 Omg!
They're there, all the time, in the public eye! yee-ouch!
The studio recording is a masterpiece that must be heard.

For sure
Yup. For first impressions i must say going studio version first is a must
I agree the studio version far surpasses this one.

Yes!! Love Rhiannon.
One of THE albums that was in every single persons stack. It's never overrated. It's a masterpiece for eternity.
This live version doesn't capture how good John McVie's bass solo is, and the rhythm work together with Mick Fleetwood's drums in the studio version. The whole song definitely is a masterpiece of vocals and musicianship. Thanks Elizabeth.
Must agree, I almost always prefer the album version over the live version, and that is certainly true of this song.
Agreed. That bass solo is one you'll never forget once you hear it. Love it.
This live version is almost unlistenable compared to the studio version.
Totally agree, I was a bit bummed she was listening to a live version, it all sounds off after having the studio version imprinted into my brain. This live is just not as good to me.
Yeah, but it captures everything else and more
3 lead singers is what put that version of Mac into the stratosphere. Each voice so distinct
McVie is a monster bass player. All three vocalists were amazing. Fleetwood is a very, very good drummer. It say a lot that the guitar player, Peter Green, named his band after the rhythm section.
What Fleetwood Mac became with Nicks and Buckingham is a much different proposition from what you got with Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer. Oh, Well.
Loved both versions of the band
@@mmahon10 There were really several distinct incarnations of the band with each new member (Bob Welch and Danny Kirwan, for example) who came and went contributing to the "patina." Contrast early Mac with the one that followed Peter Green's LSD-fueled freak-out ("Oh, Well" and "The Green Manalishi).
Ooh I'm excited. The Chain is one of the greatest songs of all time. Possibly Fleetwood Mac's best.

"The Chain", for me, is second only to "Sara" for vocal blend, intricacy, and pure heartache.
THAT is genius!
breakup songs tend to be extremely impactful... can't wait for this one...
Genius or sadistic?😆
To be slightly more precise, the guy she was writing about wrote a few back. Hers are more wistful, generally, but he wrote 'Go Your Own Way' and made *her* sing it. If we're talking vindictive, that's it right there...and it's a better song.

Lindsey Buckingham is a criminally underrated guitarist. What you are watching is finger picking at its finest, as he doesn’t use a guitar pick. Everything about this guy from the singing to the guitar playing is raw in the moment emotion supported by years and decades of craft.
Years and decades of craft that was supported by the physical and emotional labor of Stevie financially and emotionally supporting him!
What a song! What an album! And this solo is the proof that Lindsey is one of the most underrated guitarrists in the history of rock and roll! Great choice!
This!!! 1000% Lindsey is a BEAST!!! And pickless!!!
The fact that so many people say he's underrated belies the statement.
While I wouldn't personally place him as an underrated guitarist given the number of people who do give him credit for his undeniable talent, I would list him as being an underrated vocalist given that when FM is brought up everyone immediately thinks of Nicks.
They had to replace Buckingham with two guitarists after dismissing from him from the band.
However you need a steady supplier, money to live it big, hire helpers to do certain stuff that you should avoid stealing your time from creative work.

... I love her voice, except when she is doing the cutesy little girl thing, and then I find it makes me cringe.
There are a couple of songs on Tango in the Night that she totally ruins with that for me.
Oh man, I remember that...
John McVie's bassline should also be mentioned.
I remember experiencing that moment on my first listen through the ext edt. Blew me away.

@@myrrhfishify7743 Not the original original. It's a completely different song except for the chorus lyrics and the title. As said it started out as McVie's Keep Me There. Years later they opened their reunion concert with The Chain. With emotions less raw, it is a more cohesive piece. The reunion album is The Dance. Amazing.
I was introduced to The Chain on the Dance album. This older rendition is almost unrecognizable, but perhaps more genuine.

-Tom
I liken her cries to a banshees wail of pain and loss
Totally agree - this definitely feels improvised.
I love this performance because those people singing to each other are in the middle of breaking up with each other & singing about their break-up...it's like the most meta, reality, performance a group of artists ever cobbled together.
I have never heard this version of the Chain
This is amazing, love it
This is blowing me away
From the Mirage VHS release.
She was soooo good. I read somewhere that she did that recording in one take.
I agree christine hits the mark on songbird.
This song is so powerful and you can still feel the pain in it, especially in this performance. Lindsey is so hurt and she seems almost contemptuous
Contemptuous is exactly the word I was looking for
Stevie was sleeping with Mick, Mick was married, Lindsey was sleeping with Stevie’s best friend, Stevie and Lindsey were on again off again since high school…..Christine was going through a divorce…. Meanwhile, Stevie and Lindsey still love each other but hate each other in the moment…. They definitely put the fun in dysfunction.
@@CZMuzic2714- I’ve never heard that crap about Lindsey sleeping’ with Stevie’s best friend! She’d have been talking about that forever!!
@@jayannakelley9051 look it up. She’s given interviews about it for decades.
And don't forget “dream” as an reponse to "Go Your Own Way".
You make lovin' fun was Christine's love note to one of the crew who she was having an affair with.
I'd love to see you experience watching "Big Love" for the first time (the live version from "The Dance"). Just Lindsey and his guitar. His playing and singing is unreal.
I was fortunate enough to see him do that live on that tour. His level of talent is incredible.
My favorite
An incredible performance. One of my favorites as well.
YES!! 100% this was awesome to see live.
The social dynamics of this band, and the lyrics they gave each other to sing, are just mindboggling.
Oh. My.
This album has absolutely no skippable tracks. Every song is a banger.
You didn't even mention the production. I think it might seriously be the "best sounding" album of all time. I mix music, and I constantly use it as a reference.
@@rome8180 not being a producer or a tmixer of music I wouldn't be qualified to sayhing about its production.
But I will gladly take your word for it .that it is a very good
Seeing Lindsey lead The Mac live is one of my favorite concert memories of all-time.
Awesome performance
I still consider that “new” is that bad?
Yep, you can see it in that song.
I just listened to Silver Springs. Wow! The love, the intensity, and the voice. ❤
All time great
One of the greatest bands of all time, with possibly the best live performance you will ever see.
Which is why it's so hard to listen to whilst driving in a 30mph zone! 😂
Indeed.
The bass break in this is best known in the UK as the theme music for the Formula 1 on telly.
Lindsey's inner banjo player is never far away. Great great song!
Sonny Landreth is another very unique fingerstyle player.
how do you know?
Not to knock on Lindsey, but you'll find a lot of similarity in the way bluegrass banjo pickers pick (scruggs style), and sometimes their arrangements sound humanly impossible. Lindsey being able to figure this type of picking out on his own is a testament to how good he is.
Chet Atkins Roy Clark Jerry reed would fall in the same area of unique
gay
Had the pleasure of seeing them live. Did not realize how amazing a musician Lindsay Buckingham until that moment. Hands down one of the most captivating performers I have ever seen.
I love Stevie and Lindsey staring straight at each other as they sing all their breakup songs at each other.
Yeah, delicious emotional tension captured in music.
As they sing
More like as they shout from the hollow of their stomachs haha
This makes me think Elizabeth needs to see The Civil Wars! Great harmonies, wonderful how they weave into each other, and lots of chemistry. Barton Hollow for another 'swampy' one!
Lindsey Buckingham is amazing… Big Love is just a brilliant song too… Stevie is so distinct… not many bands encapsulate that crazy life of genius musicians and how trauma and tangled emotions can lead to this amazing sound 😊
Yeah. It sounds like he's playing 2 guitars at once
The version of Big Love he did for the Dance performance was mind blowing.
You do such a fantastic job at analyzing songs. None better than this. Thank you.
Elizabeth, you need to do Lyndsey Buckingham playing both "Big Love" and "Go Insane" live on acoustic guitar. He got kicked out of Fleetwood Mac and he is so good on guitar that they had to hire two people to replace him.
Trouble too.
Big Love live has so much of Lindsy's soul worked into it. I keep going back to it at least 3 times a month, and it never gets old for me.
And "Go Your Own Way"
Yes! Elizabeth need to check this one out :)

Trouble or not he's integral to their success. Once Stevie kicked Lindsey out I wouldn't buy tickets on their tours. And yes I'd do the same if they would have toured without Stevie as well.
OH you picked the perfect performance of it too! It’s almost awkward, like watching your parents fight at the dinner table. Pure emotion
It is simply one of the most raw, honest and powerful expressions of emotion through the art of music, ever!
He did a song with Halsey and was soooo noticeable
Love your channel Elizabeth. You always look like you are completely immersed in the song and having so much fun. The way you break down not only the vocals but the song is second to none.
Curious that the algorithm bought me straight from your reaction to Come on, Eileen - two very different songs, but both harnessing that wild tempo change energy.
One of those songs on an Album you just must have in your record collection. It is a masterclass in “how to deal with a breakup “ Love is hard if it’s lost. Love is beautiful if it is kept.
Oh... This is one of the most intense performances ever recorded. Can't wait for the full vid.
Wonderful choice! For a band with a truckload of iconic compositions, this might sit on top. Extra kudos for taking the darker path for February 14th.
Lindsey: great songwriter, fantastic singer, brilliant guitarist, genius producer/arranger.
It feels more like the mass of emotion involved ruins it, the instrumental segment really suffers for it in this video.
I believe you can listen to the studio version to hear the intricacies to be sure...but the emotion (and probably the drugs) are so intense in this performance it stands to reason this is a great microcosm of who the band was at this time and, therefore, is an excellent version to analyze on Valentine's Day.
Yeah I agree, the studio track on the album definitely sounds better. Live track goes kinda flat during the instrumentals.
@@brandonhughes4674 I'm with you. While I do agree there is more "nuance" in the studio version, this is equally good, just in a different way.
I'm a huge fan of a song and the band, that I have to admit I'm kind of glad to see this version. Although I'd love to see her react to one that is more technically perfect, this is a fucking phenomenal performance in different ways
These 5 superhumans were untouchable together - links in *the chain* ⛓ RIP Christine 🖤
The live version is impressive, but the studio version is more atmospheric, and the power that rises as the song continues is more robust and well-integrated.
yes!
Oh boy, this is going to be fantastic! You absolutely can feel the tension of creative differences in this one.
I may be a headbanger at heart, but as my mother was an obsessed Fleetwood Mac fan, I was not going to enter adulthood without knowing their classic albums inside and out. You can’t go wrong with any song on Rumours but this has to be my favorite if you forced me to pick one.
I'm so excited for you to get into all 3 vocals and how different their song writing styles are. Stevie, Christine (RIP), and Lyndsay.
Another really great live performance to watch by Fleetwood Mac is absolutely Silver Springs. Stevie straight up looks like she's casting a spell while singing it. It's mesmerizing to watch.
Valentin....I can understand why u love this...the whole concert...is magical.....😊
Some of Buckingham's best guitar work ever.
Such an iconic song, baseline and total commitment from everyone in the band. This is a very special song, which has attracted so good covers as well.
I'd LOVE for you to analyse 'Rhiannon', specifically their live on The Midnight Special, 1976 version! That version is one of my all time favourite performances of any song ever!! Thanks for the awesome content Elizabeth x
I concur!
This.
