Thanks for watching and good luck 😊

heartfullofhappiness Oh, we'll convince you to buy some orchids in the end, Lyn :) Thank you for watching!
Awesome thank you for making this video! My Purpurata is in sheath more about a month now and I think I have another coming too. I didn't know anything about cattleya growing sheath, been trying to find answers. But your video is very helpful. I guess if I get buds it might be months down the road. Good to know. Thanks!
Well, the first step to successful cattleya flowering is the sheath so you're already half way there, Craig. Purpurata is an amazing plant, much wilder and more beautiful than many of the hybrid cattleyas. I am glad the video was helpful and I wish you a happy flowering!
What a beautiful catt. It reflects it's owner. Thanks for sharing.
SHARON SHORT Aw, thank you, Sharon. You are very nice.
Thank you for your presentation..now, I know to cut the sheath on C. G. Roebling..lots of buds inside..hope it will become as beautiful as yours
Good topic, thanks for sharing your knowledge!
+MouseLilly Glad it was of use, Pam.

Rachel, are you sure you're in Ireland...? :) Your beautiful garden and its environs resemble Southern California. Simply beautiful; as are the blooms on your Cattleya. Thanks for sharing with us... :)
John Benedict ORCHIDS What a lovely thing to say. You are most kind! Thank you very much.
hi!
I love the clumps of blue purple flowers in the back ground.they gorgeous.can you suggest where I could buy them.also a little bit about their grow n care..
I would really appreciate it.
thanking you
Sheetal..
Hi Sheetal. The dactylhoriza grow in the ground for me but I do have stony soil. Sorry, even if you were in Ireland, I cannot advise you on where to buy them.
amazing cat! i thought it was a laelia but it has probably been changed several times. How tall do they have to be before they flower?
orchids plz Yes, this plant has been laelia, sophronitis and cattleya. Many name changes! It needs to get big before flowering.
However, if you check out Radha's channel, ua-cam.com/channels/igil0Pwzt5-8GdoMOO8Odw.html, she has this plant in flower at a smaller size than mine. Mind you, she is in Florida!
Beautiful, enormous cattleya! Thanks for making this video. I got curious when I saw in another video that you cut the sheaths, and I meant to ask what is the right moment to do it, and this answered my question. My cattleya tenebrosa is in sheath and the buds are very small inside. Last year I didn't cut it and it didn't have a problem. If necessary I will cut it. I have orchids hanging above it, so it was good to hear your warning about the possibility of dripping sap and its dangers.
Andrea Soilander Andrea, I also have Cattleya tenebrosa, just about to open. It also has a very, very long sheathing period. It is my first flowering. I would say that if you had no problem with the sheath last year then best left alone!
Gardening at Douentza Yes, it is a very looooooooooooooong sheathing period. Even when the buds started to form inside, every week when I look they were always some 2 cm long, and no change. Other people's tenebrosas were already starting to bloom, and mine was so slow. (Last year it bloomed in the first week of June). But now the shadow inside the sheath is already 5 cm long. Once it grows some more, it will start getting faster. My streptocarpuses have grow way faster than that, and one has a tiny bud forming! :)
Andrea Soilander Hey, great news about the strep. Hopefully that will flower all summer for you.
Ishtar Darlington Sorry, logged in with my daughter's id :P
Hi awesome video! Exciting news, I discovered a bud growing in my purpurata! This is my first time getting a bud in a sheath. The bud is about 1 inch to 2 inches from the lower end of the sheath. Should I wait to cut the sheath when it get closer to the top? Or right away? I'm not sure how fast the bud will take to develop. Thanks for your help. 😎
Hi Craig and congratulations! Personally I would wait a little before cutting the sheath but you want to have enough space to cut it so that there is no danger of cutting the buds.
Beware though if you have aphids! My friend lost a but because the aphids got into her cut sheath. Not funny!
I have a idea when cattleya formed a sheath weekly twice torch 🔦 the sheath weather it cast the shadow that confirms the buds then we should be calm until the bud develop and when it come near to the top cut the sheath on top and let the bud grow ☝💪 stronger
Thank you! 💖
Welcome :)
Really a wonderfull blooming!!!
I have a Laelia purpurata too but this year it did not bloom :/
albi18galbo That's a shame. It's a shame when a plant that takes up so much space decides not to bloom! I just repotted mine so I hope it will go on to reflower next year. Thanks for watching.
Maybe I need to fertilize it more than I do.
When I bought it from a south america seller it had already the sheets and it was bare roots so, maybe, it took this gap year to acclimate...
I don't think I fully appreciated how huge that plant is!! The Christmas video of it in the house is misleading to its actual size! It looks splendid though, amazing growing :-)
+Anna Thornburn I'll try to remember to take a photo holding it, Anna. Good luck with your new purpurata!
I do have a cattleya merry green pride what a big cattleya .However not large flowers like i wanted .
i love the red flower behind you..do have the name?Tks.
Aya B The one to my left? It is Sanguisorba menziesii :)
Gorgeous plant, the flowers are marvelous, and I do want to ask you if you have tried putting a plastic baggie or something of that sort to protect the sheath after you cut it, I will try this with my cattleya if it produces a sheath this time (last time it did not but the previous time it did) so I think it could be a fun little experiment, any thoughts?
+Gabriel Zambrano I never tried that but it sounds like a good idea :)
Thank you for watching.
+Gardening at Douentza Thank you for making this video, it was very informative and I will definitely try it. I am going to put some form of plastic so it doesn't rot and hopefully I can see results and hopefully the buds form. I am going with maria to the orchid show next week and I am definitely picking up a cattleya and a dendrobium spectabile so I will let you know what happens, maria will most likely post a video on her channel and I am soo excited for the show! I really want the purpurata and especially CG Roebling. Once the CG Roebling blooms please make a video!!!!
+Gabriel Zambrano Well good luck with your experiment. Just make sure the buds aren't inhibited by the plastic. Which Maria are you talking about ? Picture Maria?
C.G. Roebling is now in flower but it is not as impressive as last year (because I divided it last spring). It is in the background in my 'Orchid Lovers & Madeira' video and features again in an orchid unboxing video that is coming up :)
+Gardening at Douentza yes I am going with Picturemaria1, Oooh an unboxing! Can't wait! So excited for the Orlando Orchid show! I am going to try to find a species cattleya and a dendrobium spectabile along with a species bulbophyllum or primary hybrid and a catasetum, so many orchids on my wishlist and so little I can actually get!
+Gabriel Zambrano Enjoy the show! But you don't need me to say that :)
hi!
Rachel its ok.. I live in india..our climate is very tropical n different from Ireland.i guess, its so beautiful in Ireland.
thanking you
Sheetal..
That is quite a different climate :)
I've had trouble with two cattleya's buds getting stuck (at least I thought they were stuck) in the sheath and after I opened the sheath the buds died on both plants. :(
***** That is a shame. Don't really know what to say about that! Maybe they were already damaged from trying to get out before you opened it?
do you know where i can get a good sized Cattleya purpurata?
+dean irving Hi Dean. I'm not sure but the German nurseries would be my first port of call - Schwerter, Orchids & More, Elsner etc. It is a great plant so I hope you find one.
my cattleya isn't bloom after she bud!
Please give your advise and opinion!
Thanks!
Did the buds just fail to open? Sometimes when I have moved a cattleya in bud this has happened to me and the buds have blasted. Let me see if I can find a link to my video where this happened on a big cattleya.
Here you go...

+SUZAN KARAHASANOĞLU Sorry. I don't understand. Are yuo selling orchid fertiliser?

+Saugat Rai You are welcome :)
+Gardening at Douentza after watching this video and your orchids u have.. must say u have some of most special variety's comparing with brads and miss orchids buhahahhahaha thumbs up
+Gardening at Douentza much more wishes for u aswell from nepal would love to know knowledge from u my new fren.
+Saugat Rai I think no two growers can have exactly the same taste in plants so that makes it all the more interesting. I am glad you have enjoyed my videos. Best wishes from Ireland to Nepal :)
So it's like circumsizing
Not really. Circumcision is the removal of the male foreskin and this is the opening of a plant sheath.
easy to take your eye off the ball, when you have so many floral distractions! :-).
andy friel Well, that's exactly it, Andy!
Would you please consider pronouncing the name as Kat-LEY-uh NOT Kat-LAY-uh. The name comes as I am sure you are aware, from William Cattley NOT William Cattlay. Regards
Tim Cattley You say potato, I say vodka.
If I saw LEY and LAY, I'd pronounce them the same.
