    Very good repotting video, Brad! I like all the different types of Cattleyas but a multi growth large flowered Cattleya in full bloom is breathtaking! I look at repotting these beasts is the price you pay for their beauty.

    Very nice Cattleya. I watched some orchid repotting videos by OrchidMania (the first is at this url: The Orchid Doctor - How to Replant an Orchid Part 1 - orchidmania south florida), and the gentleman used what he called a "tickle tool" that he'd fashioned from wire to tease out old fir bark from the roots of orchids. I made one from a bit of coat hanger wire, and it was pretty helpful when I divided and repotted my Dendrobium nobile this year.

    Brad,
    Thank you so much for creating this video. It encouraged me to tackle my large, unruly Cattleya that was in dire need of being repotted! It turned out great and it had a surprising amount of healthy roots as well.
    I am growing under lights and am hoping for a first rebloom at the end of the year ... crossing fingers :-)

    Well done, as always. I'm still experimenting on my Cattleya mix. I've been using a combination of the obligatory large chunks of bark, large pieces of perlite, and a generous helping of agricultural charcoal. I may give styrofoam a shot in the near future. I've also been using terra cotta clay pots with holes in the sides, because they dry out more quickly. But I agree with you on the whole 'root cling' issue... I'll probably go with (clear) plastic from now on.

      @BradsGreenhouse  10 років тому

      frzzlfry66 Thanks!, I did clear pots for the last 18 months or so on alot of orchids, the only problem is in the bright sun they are all turning green inside from the ferts and water. not hurting any thing...

    Always informative, Brad, and I thank you for posting. I've just brought into my collection a kind of sick cattleya. I have three other cattleya in my collection that are doing well. I wasn't sure what roots to cut as some or maybe many were papery in feeling. Is spraying a sick cattleya roots with 3% peroxide wrong? I placed her inside moss into a clay pot of which I just may place her inside a plastic pot with many drainage holes. I've had the horrible experience of roots sticking to clay pots....not a nice thing to do in taking the roots off the pot...ouch!

    Hi Brad, Love your repotting videos. Got a question. When the roots start to grow out of the pot on orchids and are hanging over, should I repot tucking them all inside bark?

    • @BradsGreenhouse
      @BradsGreenhouse  10 років тому +2

      Joseph schlusberg I would leave the air roots outside the pot, more than likely potting the roots that grow in air just kills them.

    Thanks for your tips Brad, but I suppose the biggest unanswered question is why you use the medium you do? Some people recommend an inorganic medium, others use chips of cocoanut, others bark, some say styrofoam is useless, etc. It would be very helpful to have the benefit of why you make the medium choices you do. Best wishes.

    Very helpful video. How do you assess the dryness of an orchid planted in a non-clear pot? I purchased a paphiopedilum and a mini cattleya today, both in the standard green plastic pots. The cattleya is so root bound that there is no place for me to stick my finger in. Until the plants get repotted, how do you suggest that I assess the dryness of the medium? Thanks!

    Hi Brad
    I bought a mature cattleya directly fr a well-known grower directly fr their gardens. Should I still repot or leave it in what they used. I also bought seedlings where the are in small pebbles. What's your thoughts? Thanks.

  • @amourdeparis
    @amourdeparis 10 років тому

    It looks really good. I think that cattleyas are the most beautiful orchids. I like using clay pots for my cattleyas because they are heavy enough for stability and allow the roots to breathe. I've never had a problem with the roots sticking to the pots. Should that happen, I would simply break the pot the next time that I repot it.

    • @BradsGreenhouse
      @BradsGreenhouse  10 років тому

      amourdeparis yeah, I would break the pot if it was to happen as well. thanks for the comment and happy growing

    I have a question is it alright that I just repotted my cattleya yesterday in the middle of SeptemberI just got a new pseudobulb around june. I'm worried that potting right now might not make her happy and die, but I really didn't have much choice. Because of all the rain in south Florida she had some mushrooms growing on the media. she's now bare root in a rubber coated wire basket with some spanish moss here and there to keep some moisture but im just going to grow her bare root like the rest of my orchids. most of which were rescues and they seem to have skyrocketed this season.

  • @zigmanify
    @zigmanify 9 років тому

    wrinkling pseudobulbs means u need to water them probably, depending on
    how dry the media is. your best bet is to look at the Media and see how dry it is.
    cattylahs go to a very wet to a very dry. they need that water to make the peudobulbs when dry. i hope that's good info got these details from a orchid book.

    I can't grow cattleyas anymore. I always forget to water them, and when I do remember, it is after I've watered my entire collection of orchids or carnivorous plants (hundreds of plants for both). They actually die of dehydration for me.

    • @BradsGreenhouse
      @BradsGreenhouse  10 років тому

      ***** yeah, the Cattleya's I have mounted are always dehydrated as well. I would alter your media mix a bit and add more sphagnum moss. It isn't right for everyone but it buys you time in between waterings if needed

    I didn't see where the new little pseudobulb and its new roots ended up. Were they covered by the potting mix? Also, I've been given some catalayas that are not growing straight up. They're growing horizontally. Is this a good thing or a bad thing. Should I, or can I straighten them out? They sure isn't as pretty and the upright plants are.

      Nice new fresh potting medium. Remember he said the old stuff rots and gives off acid that burns the roots, and when the bedding collapses, the holes disappear and orchids need lots of holes for oxygen getting to the roots. They are epiphitic and need lots of air.
