  • This video shows the border I made, using ideas from the New Wave Perennial Planting Movement, also known as Prairie Planting and epitomised by Piet Oudolf.
    I discuss my experience and what I have found to be the pros and cons of this style of planting.
    From Douentza Garden in Wexford, Ireland.

    Beautiful combinations! It takes a lot of hard work and a good eye to make a garden bed look so natural and effortless.

    Such a beautiful border Rachel, all of the plants are so beautiful and I really LOVE the Schizostylis, those flowers are so beautiful and the colour is so gorgeous on them too, gorgeous border and video and all those wonderful plants swaying in the breeze look like they are 'waving' at me on the screen :-) Thanks so much for sharing the beauty and have a FAB Wednesday today XXXXX

    Great video, lovely to see first year results and issues. I've only just discovered prairie style and want to integrate it into my new garden.

    I remember when this book was published and I was excited by many of the design ideas it contained. Interesting to hear and see your experience with applying them. I have always wondered how weed seeds know to germinate amongst plants with similar foliage like you commented on here about grasses and achillea.

    • @Nhoj31neirbo47

      Re; weeds. I suppose it has evolved by selection from browsing animals. If they tend to leave certain plants alone, then the weeds that resemble those plants also don't get eaten. I would guess that the seeds somehow sense, chemically?, when they are near specific plants thus being 'safe' to germinate and grow there.

      +John OBrien I think you are right, John. I read somewhere too that the weeds have further evolved due to gardeners' intervention. So if we always remove the ones that are easily identifiable, we favour those that masquerade as ornamentals. I don't know how true this is but it is an annoying phenomenon. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Gorgeous garden, I love that grass with wispy look it's very pretty,And floaty, I used to do a lot of gardening but now through disability thats no longer possible, And hubby is hopeless at it, I asked him once to trim the lower dead twigs off 2 conifer trees And when I saw them he had cut everything off up to approx 5ft and shaped it into a ball, they looked like 2 giant pom poms on a stick, and they never grew back, The neighbours thought it was very funny. Love the flowers that cascade on to the lawn. :)))

    Lovely, we mixed our Dahlias and spring bulbs, herbs, and edibles into our new wave style wild garden surprisingly works well.

    we go native. usually in areas, for less mowing,less watering, wildlife and trying to undo the invasive massacre that has become normal. (0;

    really stunning, I love it. why is it called "new wave?" the juxtaposition with the dahlias is really gorgeous.

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  8 років тому +1

      +annaiskicking You are right about it being a juxtaposition with the dahlias, Anna, but it's not too jarring, I think. Not sure why it's called 'new wave'. Hmmm, must google that!

    That was a beautiful fall garden. I wonder if some earlier blooming annuals would help earlier in the spring?

      It is Schizostylis coccinea, a very easy plant, in this part of the world anyway.
      Thank you for your support. It is much appreciated.

    I have just started a new area of "New Wave Prairie P,lanting" (something tells me I may have overplanted..time will tell). Did you ever follow up with another video a year or two later than this just to see how the bed progressed?
