- Cattleya orchid care and watering and re blooming tips. These orchids require different care than a Phalaenopsis but are well worth the challage This is just a bit of insight into my care and culture. Everyone's set up will be different and what works for me may not work for you. Plenty of bright light, water and fertilizer in the summer months combined with a drop in temperature insure many blooms on all of my Cattleyas. This care will also be good for most Dendrobium and some Oncidium orchids as well. Notes on potting mixes are also described.

I live in the desert southwest. I don't have a greenhouse, but keep my orchids in fish tanks (terrariums) that are open, with fish tank bubblers in a pan of water below them. My hygrometer usually reads between 50 and 90 % humidity. I also mount mine on bark (not keep them in pots). This allows very quick draining and drying. I mist them when it is very hot and dry. This is a good method for arid areas.
Yes, as long as they don't dry up it is not a problem at all.
Hi Koops,
I only cut off already dead roots, I don't find many of my Cattleya roots die from a repotting. Plus it helps stabilize them while growing more new roots.
I have quite a few Cattleyas, some are mounted. They live on the south wall farthest from the foggers and it is hotter on the south side as well.
Beautiful orchids, can't wait to see mine bloom!! Thank you for your information. I am learning everyday new things. I appreciate it Sir : )
Your very welcome!
+Brads Greenhouse & Gardening hi
Lovely. Thanks for sharing. I liked seeing the nepenthes in the background too.
they are absolutely beautiful!
I just order vanda orchids.. Want to buy some vandas too but its so hard to get the good ones here... Yours makes me feel more fall in love with catt orchids. Nice video brad!!!
Best videos I've seen! So easy to understand! Thank you thank you thank you!!
Aww to bad. Yes light is a big part of Cattleya type orchid care.
Soo pretty I think splash might be my favorite.
It depends on how the roots are. If you haven't I would repot it into fresh media and check the roots out at the same time. Worst case at this point the new growth with new healthy roots will plump up the old buld slowly of the next year. But they will never look quite right.
That seems to be a standard way here on the Internet. I'm not sure if it really does much but it is better than nothing. I would look into a humidifier for the home or room. Thanks for watching and that question.
Brad
love orchids
Takes about 9-12 months to rebloom a cattleya but if you have many growth maturing at different times you can have it in bloom more often.
Great video! I have a cattleya wich im trying to savr and one that I bought because it was too cute for me to let it be. I hope mines bloom with lots of flower like yours.
I am so jealous that you have a greenhouse. I am forced to grow under lights in a basement, and it sucks to have a collection of 70 stuffed under bulbs, some too high to water easily, having to transport them in trays to the bathtub etc. etc. I wish I had a smaller collection.
Hi brad, i live in indonesia. I just have some indonesia species here because its hard to get hybrid one here.. I am not expert on orchid and your videos help me a lotttt.. ;D
Some of them come in the house and grow in a south window for a month or two but vandas and such seem fine at 55f night time low.
Thanks Brad!
Seems easy enough :). Thank you :)
Le mauve et blanc est juste trop beau. The purple and white one is awesome. Too bad I can't give my Catts enough light. I'm giving a last try under artificial light before selling them.
Hi euze, it is an LC Purple Cascade
If is is a very different environment the root would die. Moss to bark would do it, as would air roots to bark.
Beautiful. Too bad I wouldnt be able to provide the light requirements.
congratulations!!!!
Hi thanks for the video! I amjust starting with orchids, vandas are my favorite, but ive got about 40 orchids total! I just got my first orchid summer or last year for my high school graduation gift! Fell in love with them! So how long does it take for the sheath to form and the spike to comethrough, once it comes up???
Hi Brad...i d like to know what kind of artificial light you add in your green house for the lack of light in winter
Thank you and happy new year
Pierre from France
So you can set Cattleyas outside in the summer? Do you put them in direct sun or partial sun? I was just given one by a co-worker who has had it for 5 years and never had it bloom. I am pretty good with plants but have shied away from orchids due to the difficulty in growing them.
If temperatures don't go over 25C in the afternoon, start by giving them east/morning Sun for two weeks, then give them full sun (they need time to adjust to Sun, or the leaves will burn). They will love it. Cattleyas need alot of light to be strong enough to bloom.
If it gets hotter than 25C in the afternoon, keep your Cattleya in a place where they get lots of morning Sun but shade for the rest of the day, otherwise the leaves might get some burn damage.
Use medium bark mix if your plant gets rainfall, because potted in moss, one rainy week could rot the roots. (Indoors or sheltered from rainfall, you can use some moss since you control watering.)
You'll need to water it every day when it dosen't rain in bark mix. Prepare a jug of 20-20-20 fertilizer at one fourth of the recomended concentration (so very diluted) and use that for every watering, as Cattleyas like a steady supply of diluted food during growth and blooming.
Hi Brad; Thanks for the video. I bought a brasso-cattleya orchid last December in bloom. I have kept it in a west facing window that has a tree shading it so it gets pretty good light, but not direct. It is very healthy with lots of new growth, but no sign of blooms. I have a small unheated greenhouse that I've had trouble with some plants getting burned in, such as several of my phalaenopsis. I'm in CA, so its still in the 80's during the day, but finally cooling off at night. Should I put it out there and bring it in at night? I don't want to burn it. Please help? Thanks. Rebecca
Do u cut off the old roots when repotting a cattelya. Iv noticed alot of the old roots die .should you trim the roots back so the bark will hold it in the pot better. Or just leave alll the roots to die in the new pot?
Where I live is way to hot in summer and I was wondering if i can create humidity by standing the cattleya on pebbles with water or this doesn't work out for them?
Also-I am hoping you live in Florida or have a greenhouse where you can grow vandas with the humidity and bright light they need, or you are going to be one of those frustrated vanda growers. Also, I am wanting to downsize my collection- I have mostly cattleyas. I like them because so many of them smell, but I am having health problems and it's harder for me to take care of them. I have about 70 in a basement under lights, and it's too much. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED, message me back.
My guess would be not enough light, it is the number one reason orchids don't bloom!
Thanks fang qrie! Where about do you live? Canada?
Brad, can you make some video for anguola orchid? Thank you so much
See my other note: But I have been growing a few Phals but find them a bit too touchy for the desert arid/heat and am looking into Catts. Question: Can they be mounted on bark like Phals, or must they be in pots? I know the Psuedo bulbs would mean they store water better. Can they live in high mist situations like the mist machines in your greenhouse where you have those mastavalias? Is this a silly question?
Hm wonder why my cat s old roots die..would repotting them from spagmoss to bark kill the roots?...
only have 3 blooms ......I don't want to loose it, HELP! Sad, SB
hi brad, my climate here is warm and breezy and humidity not that great, what media would you propose i use for catts?
Brad my Phalaenopsis is done blooming , but looks like it has two spuds on stem ready to come out to make blooms. Should I repot to 4 inch pot now currently in 3 inch or should I wait to see if rebloom first. I cut the old top of stem off where old blooms were down to above where looks like new spuds are trying to come out. Looks like new blooms trying to start to regrow
How long before new spike grow from last bloom?
Hi Brad's I had bought some cattleya Orchid a year ago, and i still can't get it rebloom.
Do you use shade cloth in your green house?
How often do you water the entire plant (cattleya)?
I have a cattleya that I would like to hang up so that it receives more sunlight, but I would like to repot it first because the potting media it came with is a moss that becomes very very hard when it dries. Would it be a good idea to switch it right to the bark, or should I put it in a bark/moss mixture so that it's not that big of a change for the roots? Thanks
It depends on how often you want to water your orchid, bark drys faster but moss retans water. Find a good mix that works for your watering schedule
I keep having empty sheaths. What am I doing wrong ?
dear Brad, i just started a love for orchids.my favorites are the dendrobiums(they keep on blooming for me). so,i started a love for Cattleyas now,but it seems that they just wont grow for me. i remember i bought one, completely healthy with a huge pretty flower on it.but after it was done blooming the pseudo bulbs were becoming soft, like all mushy from the inside...i do check for over watering, but the root system is completely dry.so i cut off that pseudo bulb to make sure the other bulbs dont get infected or so.and i see no new roots coming out either.and when the pseudo bulbs are giving a bud for a flower,it completely dries out.what am i doing wrong?im totally lost.
So sad that he has this channel but doesn't really interact with those who follow him and truly need help. I wish I could help you. I don't know enough about the orchid to help. 😟
Hi Brad, my Orchid's flowers are falling and it
It's it ok for root to comr out of pot
So today I got an orchid for valentines day and I don't have a clue on anything about the plant. First I put it in potting soil only to read on the internet that normal soil smothers them, so I took it out and just have it sitting in its little pot with no substrate. Will this be okay to do until tomorrow when I can get coconut bark or peat moss ect...?
Yes, it should be ok, You probably got a Phalaenopsis Orchid. Search UA-cam for Phalaenopsis care and im sure you will get all of the info you want...and more! I have a bunch of videos about these orchids on my channel as well.
my mother have some orchids. now shes gone. im the trying to save them. about the cattleya. why your cattleya flowers have a long shoot while mine is very short?
by the way im from the philippines so my flowers get so many sunlight
Hi Johnnel, this is a Leila Orchid. Same family as a Cattleya
I would love too but I don't have any :(
Poo. I just bought a yellow Cattleya and when I felt the bark i thought it felt dry. I gave it some water and now the flowers are looking sad and the base of the flowers are turning yellow. >,< I made sure all of the excess water drained from the pot after watering it. If I let the plant be for a week or two will it rebound? And if the flowers do fall off how long does it take for a new set to appear? I'm newbie with orchids.
flowers are probably just done. now you have to grow a new bulb so it can flower. they rebloom every year
...off the new bulb
***** That's good to know. Thanks for the reply. :)
I have a very beautiful orange Cattleya. I bought it while it was in bloom I think one and a half year ago. It did grow two new bulbs and the now look fully grown since at least autumn but it didn't flower. Now one of those new bulbs produces another new bulb. What am I doing wrong?
Sarawena sounds like it needs more light, lack of light is the number one reason orchids don't bloom
Okay thank you! I'll try putting my cattleyas to a place where they have more light. I thought it was enough since the new leafs weren't as dark as the old ones but you're the expert so I'll try!
:) beauty
Your sound is not clear
If you are just starting and you already have 40 orchids, please STOP getting more for a while. You will run out of space and time to take care of them, and you will become more picky about what particular orchids you want to grow, and you will have all these less than outstanding plants that are taking up space and keeping you from getting really nice ones. PLEASE BELIEVE ME! Every orchid addict, including myself, has made this mistake.
