I always thought the reason the last chorus of the song isn't as upbeat as the previous ones is because it portrays his disappointment and finally acceptance of the fact that he can't have her
I want you to notice when I'm not around. Is a beautiful lyric. It's about rejection. Liking someone who doesn't like you. She ran away. Fucking heartbreaking.
I would disagree in one respect.. Sure, it’s about what it’s about, but the part that always gets me is the “I wish I was special, you’re so fuckin special” part.. Have you ever had a person in your life who the world viewed as perfect, and you suffered because you didn’t measure up?.. Music can represent different things to different people..
He was writing about a girl that was way out of his league and he felt unworthy and hated his inadequacies. He was the "weirdo" earlier in life. You're pretty F'ing special too.
Ditto this. Pretty much all guys have been there. What the hell am I doing here? Kai... try "Lucky" from OK Computer. Or any song on that record for that matter.

I completely agree with you on the guitar riff at the beginning of the chorus. I love the calm melody of this song mixed with the build up and the intense chorus...the levels make this song so special!
Kai, were you listening to the same song? this about his obsession with a girl who is a bit up her own hole and treats him with disdain. Nothing playful about it. it is relevant to a lot of us who aren't in with the 'in crowd' and are considered awkward and un cool. Try listening to the live version of the song from Reading festival if you want to appreciate the sheer depth of emotion Thom York puts into this song.
In or out...we're all here. Like the Rolling Stones said, "can't always get what you want but if you try sometimes, you get what you need". Gotta move on.
Hi K 😉 I was fortunate enough to see these guys live. Unbelievable band that doesn’t tour very often, but way underrated. Have millions of followers.. Glad I got to see them once.. I’d recommend them to anyone that appreciates great musicians and true talent. 👍
You missed that the album Ok Computer was voted best album of the 20th century in the UK. Don’t think there underated, just mis understood. Best live band ever...as I was lucky enough to see them after the launch of the Bends album
It's probably already been mentioned here. This is a true story of Thom Yorke's obsession with a beautiful girl at Exeter Uni. He thought he just wasn't good enough for her and could only watch her from afar.......until he got drunk enough to talk to her and ended up scaring her off! Some years later he discovered that she was in the audience at a gig and had a panic attack! Still did the gig though.
I don't know the band's intention with the song, but I connect with this song because I know how it feels to be a weirdo, and also that like "I want you to notice, when I'm not around" really hits with me because I know what it feels like to be invisible.
ANGELINA JORDAN has 130+songs on UA-cam .......She covers iconic artists and she has 5 originals.......I am positive you will love her as we all do!!!......We call her THE BAREFOOT PRINCESS cuz she always performs bare feet........There is a beautiful story pertaining to the reason why!!!.......She won Norway Got Talent in 2014 when she was 8 yo......She is 15 yo now!!!
We ALL felt that way the first time we heard it. That song is ONE OF A HUNDRED tunes that were life changing back then. Good rock needs to come back dont you think so too?
The song is about a girl he used to like but felt that he is not worthy of talking to her because he saw that she was just perfectly beautiful. True story. She was even there at his concert.
Yeah I remember when this song came on, after breaking down the lyrics this is so relatable lol. Great reaction, first time seeing you, but you just got a new subscriber!
Thomas wrote this song about a girl in college that he was head over heels for but couldn't talk to her. But after liquid courage he tried to but couldn't get the words out it creeped her out so she ran later he sang the song to her when she was in a crowd and she realized it was about her
So many Radiohead songs start off sounding a little sketchy but they always build and build and build and when Thom lets rip, it hits like juggernaut. The man is a vocal athlete
I'm not sure if someone's already told you what the song's about, so sorry if I'm repeating someone else, but, here goes: Tom Yorke, the singer, wrote this song about becoming obsessed about a stunning girl he saw at University, but he was so afraid of talking to her that he just followed around for some time. At some point, she went to one of the shows he and the band performed this and he had a panic attack. Then, one evening he got very drunk and accidentally scared her off by telling her how he felt at a bar. I don't know if she heard the song before or after he told her this, however.
I can tell he was in love but didn't have the guts to tell her. Or he had a crush or he was obsessed with this beautiful girl that was like an angel in his eyes. He was in love all by himself.
I first heard this song on the radio towards the end of 1992. It was the first time I had heard Radiohead and from the moment Jonny blasts in with his guitar I was hooked. I can hardly believe it is almost 30 years later but watching them blossom and expand into the greatest band of their generation (and, as far as I am concerned, the greatest band ever) has been an absolute pleasure. I very much enjoyed your enjoyment of that same moment. If you are new to the band then you have so much to look forward to. They are not always an easy listen but the rewards are immense. p.s Try "Fake plastic trees" Live at Glastonbury in 2003. ua-cam.com/video/HDS4wOd_o1I/v-deo.html&ab_channel=fabiocchi
Hey Kai I watched your reaction to Bobby Hatfield's (The Righteous Brothers) unchained melody. There is a guy who is part of a group called Home Free. His name is Austin Brown he does a cover of unchained melody that you will need to get a fan for just venting the blouse wont work.
I think its incredibly sad song. He's not cool. He's not one of the beautiful people and he knows it. He realizes he's out of his element. I don't think he sees himself as a creep or a weirdo, its how they see him. He doesn't belong there. I sense loathing and resentment in his words when he says she's special. Very sad.
Radiohead have two entries in the 'top 100 albums' poll. 'The Bends' and 'O.K. Computer' both are worth a listen and have a host of great songs. If you are impressed by this (studio version) song, you should watch Creep (Best Live Performance) version. Thom, the singer, is really quite impressive in that.
Creep doesn't mean "sketchy" or "pervy" in the context of this song. At the time it was just another synonym for loser or outcast. The whole song is an anthem for self-deprecating insecurity....something most of us experience at various parts of our lives (especially as teens and young adults)
The song is definately about an average to below average looking man, approaching a woman he finds attractive. "You're like a feather, floating in a beautiful world" (the people you surround yourself with are beautiful) in the beginning of the song. Follow that vibe through the rest of the lyrics... Women typically notice when a man they're attracted to is not around.
Creep is their most popular song but it doesn't capture the sound of the band in the slightest, I suggest listening to either, Weird fishes, How to disappear completely, Paranoid android or 2+2=5 for a better idea on Radiohead :)
What do you mean the lyrics are "playful"? The singer/songwriter is wrenching his heart and pouring his emotions of rejection and your you're listening to it smiling. Only guys get this.

pretty much any insecure guys anthem or just guys in general. I myself find myself in this song quite often.
Agreed mate - and also the "you float like a feather, in a beautiful world. I wish I was special..."
This song is probably as far away from this girl's personal experience as a human can get.
It's a soccer thing probably! 😂
I don't necessarily think that's true. You can't really judge a book by it's cover.
