I love this song. It's about depression, and giving up, and surrendering - whether that's to suicide or just to a quiet, uninteresting and unrewarding life that you resign yourself to. The feeling isn't anger, it's not fear, it's not dramatic or loud, the character doesn't want to make a fuss, it's just quiet and sad.
It's the lullaby you fall asleep to in the car as the exhaust fumes are pumped into the window.

Brilliant. I am neither proud nor ashamed to say I have just luckily never dealt with depression (have a severe anxiety disorder which just incidentally seems to shield me from depression even when I SHOULD be depressed) but game respects game and I can sense you understand the shit out of something.

When the water drains out of the tank you can see Thom Yorke trying to hold back a smile - they'd been trying over and over again to get through the take with Thom holding his breath for long enough and he could never quite make it and so when he finally does there's that look on his face. It's in the documentary Meeting People Is Easy.

When I first heard this song, I didn't have any personal reference that allowed me to fully appreciate it. I just knew how I so loved it; and played the whole album often. It wasn't till years later that the lyrics absolutely hit me emotionally.
I had a friend that I met while in college and we became very close. She was so highly intelligent, deep and we trusted one another to reveal our secrets. As the years went on, we maintained our friendship and kept in touch. After school, she became a successful psychologist, and had such a beautiful daughter. And she found this wonderful man, loved each other, and were planning on getting married.
The one dark flaw that was always there in her life was her Depression. She tried everything to help her, but it was to no avail. She would describe it as drowning in a lake and she just couldn't escape from it. Then one night her fiancé couldn't find her and went searching throughout the house. He finally found her in the garage, sitting in her car that was still running. She set it up where she died quietly from the car exhaust breathing in all that carbon monoxide poisoning.
I talked to her fiancé and he told me everything that happened. He didn't know how he was going to tell her daughter. As he talked, he said he almost tripped on something on the floor. I asked him what and he told me trying not to break up, "Batteries...they're batteries to the carbon monoxide alarm." It was then that I thought about this Radiohead song and the lyrics, and it hit me hard. She removed the batteries from the alarm to make sure her suicide would not be interrupted.
There would be No Alarms and No Surprises. I still shed tears when I hear this song.

Radiohead has a crazy diverse catalog of music, nothing ever truely sounds the same so you can basically play any of their discography and find a brand new sounds you wouldn't think they would try.
Nude, There There and 2 + 2 = 5 are prime examples of the extremes they can reach.

First off, you have a great personality for this type of channel! Not everyone finds their place in this world and has the guts to go for it. many props to you. Radiohead ARE magic - for people like me who were in High School and College in the incredible decade of the 90's musically - Radiohead are the closest we have to the Beatles or Pink Floyd or whoever are up in the clouds as the true next next next level bands. They started 30 years ago and are still together, same 5 guys friends from primary school - such a rare thing in popular music. They're in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and are 1 of maybe 6 or 7 artist period to have 5 (out of 9) of their albums appear on Rolling Stone top 500 albums of all time. So yeah, they are a serious serious rabbit hope of incredible music to approach. I think it is cool to approach how you described, on your pace - their music isn't all soft and pretty, plenty of even more touching powerful songs than the 3 you have done and it is one of their strong suits (while being dark and slightly 'off' to give you that moist eye feeling - part of their genius) - but if it is 1 month or 3, and you'd like to stick to the prettier songs as you slowly engage with this band, I'd highly recommend the song "Nude: Live from the Basement"....it is a similar style but even more powerful and you get to see them live (it has no issues with copyright) you connect even more. Or to continue easing your way in with a bit happier but still sweet and beautiful song, "High and Dry." At some point, they have spread across so many styles to harder rock, electronica, jazz fusion...and stuff really no other band has even exactly done....the common theme is the music is like nothing else. Thanks so much for sharing, I just saw your other 2 reactions last week, so it is cool up popped a new one! Be great in your life, love and peace//

Their entire catalog is incredible and they have a lot of diversity in their sound. They are a bit of a throwback in that they are an album band and single songs often lose context because the whole record is a bit like a novel and the songs chapters. They have songs that you can dance to, cry to and rock out to but all their music is great to put on good headphones and dim the lights to.

This song was part of probably the best live performance I've ever been lucky enough to see live . Glastonbury 1997. (Search UA-cam - Radiohead - Glastonbury 1997 - No Surprises).
The thing that kind of made it perfect was [spoilers] the fireworks going off in the background - they weren't actually part of Radiohead's show. The fireworks were a completely separate pre-planned display that happened to coincide with that bit of No Surprises.
Worth searching for the rest of their Glastonbury 1997 set too. It was one hell of show.

I think, to understand the context of Radiohead at this point, is to understand that Britain in the mid-1990s had been prone to a kind of retro-pop that was often boorish and sexist and unapologetic. And it was Radiohead's task to deconstruct the honesty of how people who didn't feel that way into music. It's not necessarily a new thing. There is a folkish melancholia that underpins the English mindset and which they continually give vent to.

Radiohead was formed in the UK in the 80's, but they debuted in 1993 w/ the album 'Pablo honey'... the single 'Creep' was a huge hit and the record sold platinum as Radiohead were marketed as the British alternative rock band behind Nirvana in the 90's grunge rock era... Radiohead is: Thom Yorke (vocals/ guitar/ keyboards), Johnny Greenwood (guitar/ keyboards), Colin Greenwood (bass), Ed O'Brien (guitar) and Philip Selway (drums).
In 1995, Radiohead wanted to step away from the 'grunge rock' sound and released their 2nd album 'The Bends'... it sold less (gold or half million copies in the US)... In 1997, Radiohead radically transformed their sound and incorporated more electronic sounds and influences... the 3rd album 'OK Computer' became their biggest record w/ hit singles - 'Karma police'... 'No surprises' ... 'Paranoid android'...
In 2000, Radiohead released the album 'Kid A' and it went to #1 on the US charts... it was a very ambient-sounding electronic record and a huge success... Next album 'Amnesiac' was released in 2001 and was another success. Radiohead continued their success streak in 2003 w/ the album 'Hail to the thief'.
Radiohead has continued to make new music and tour successfully... Subsequent albums were - 'In rainbows' (2007)... 'The King of Limbs' (2011)... 'A Moon shaped pool' (2016).

Hmm. Interesting comment about taking Radiohead in small doses. But I'd say they are an album-oriented band. It's like listening to Beethoven's 9th Symphony. It is made up of 4 movements. Most people know the 4th movement ("Ode to Joy" they call it) but in truth, the artistic statement is 4 movements long. It all leads up to a powerful "Ode to Joy" moment. Sure, you can take bits and piecea of it and enjoy it, but you're robbing yourself of the aesthetic experience the artists wanted to present. That said, I agree you don't want to try and digest all of Radiohead in one sitting. But you can listen to any one individual album from beginning to end, and spend a few months digesting it before moving on to the next album. Each album is so different with something different to say, or a different means of expressing itself. For me, "OK Computer" is not only their ultimate masterpiece, but probably THE best album of the last 30-40 years. You might as well listen to their albums in sequential order. I use the Beethoven analogy on purpose, by the way. As a classically trained composer myself, I sometimes wonder what music of today will still be around in 200 years, the way Mozart and Beethoven's music is still around today. Radiohead is near the top of my list. If you want to continue listening to one song at a time, and if you know your Romeo and Juliet, I highly recommend "Exit Music (For a Film)." It will year your heart out.
