Catinca did an amazing job in this movie...some child actors are really not believable at all, but she was brilliant. Also, I read somewhere that she kept fetching stuff for Lee because she genuinely thought he couldn't walk, and when she found out he could, she actually thought she'd healed him by being kind. That's fucking adorable.
Yeah I watched Lee's interview and he told that he made everyone on the set believe from the start that he's Roy and he can't walk so the atmosphere would be more sensitive.
The reason Lee kept the disability the entire time, I think, was so that the little actress wouldn't get confused. That's also probably why the director said to talk to him and not act.
I was thinking more of the repercussions on the crew after the reveal. Several members were upset, and I imagine working on the fantasy sequences later must have been awkward. I admit the gamble paid off as Lee and Cantinca's scenes together are mesmerizing on every viewing.
I would think that the crew would know, and if they didn't... why? I understand not telling Catinca, but the crew should know. She was 6 at the time, so it would be understandable. It's hard to explain how a man could not be able to walk one minute and be running about the next. Why the crew would be angry baffles me still. A bit less awkward, probably more shocking at the start. All of the scenes for the hospital were shot before the story scenes, obviously (the haircut). The director (or Lee, we don't know), had to sit Catinca down and explain to her what was going to happen. All of a sudden, her Roy could walk when not a moment ago he was confined to a wheelchair. Ah, the things we do for children. It all paid off, though. This is the one piece of work Lee is extremely proud of. Tip if anyone ever meets him; ask about The Fall. He'll get all giddy and excited and want to talk about it all day. He'll want to talk about little *Catinca* all day. If the actor is happy with the work, then you know the work must me truly marvelous.... with quite a few stories to back it up. Can you tell I love this movie? Apologies if I went off on a tangent.
Don't apologise. The movie was such a pleasant surprise in terms of how much it awed and moved me. Tarsem has said in several interviews that he kept up the deception for 3 months because of how it would affect Catinca's performance if the crew were jokey about Lee's supposed disability. He said Catinca would have picked up on the vibes if she knew it was all pretend. Several staff complained that he could have trusted them with the secret. I would hate to have that many people upset with me, Tarsem and Lee are brave souls!
Why can't people just understand that she is SIX YEARS OLD. So what if Lee faked his injury? You would have had to do the same thing everyday. Knowledge wasn't going to give you power, crew.
***** I think I read somewhere once that not even the crew knew. He said that the first part of filming was very lonely for him, because he couldn't let anyone see him walking.
I love that Tarsem tells Catinca, "You have to talk to him. No acting." Catinca was so fixated on giving Lee the gift/letter. What a wonderful, pure gesture,
The Fall is seriously one of the best movies I've ever seen.. and I've seen a lot of movies. Awesome director, fantastic actors, just gorgeous cinematography.
Just so you all know Roy was 100% based on 1920s actor Wallace Reid who suffered the same kind of stunt accident when filming and was sent to a sanitarium to recover, he developed a morphine addiction, look him up, Lee also has an uncanny resemblance to Reid.
atikahrockslikecrazy I always believed that Wallace rather was a reference to Alfred Russell Wallace, who found out about the theory of evolution independently from Charles Darwin. Look him up. :)
Thanks for this tidbit! I liked this quirky movie for one reason: Lee Pace! But, I fell in love with that adorable little girl! She has a future, if she wants it! Young Lee is very a-dor-able, his own self, too!
I just googled the name of the actor you said and now i can totally see why they cast Lee for that role. He does have the resemblance. Also i love Lee so much (and he's more beautiful than Wallance in every way😍😍😍)
I love how they just went for deception. I think that was a very good idea because it would make Catinca's job so much easier. Children of that age are so full of imagination and that makes it harder for them to not seem like they're acting. Making some things real for Catinca just adds to the film!
Okay...since we have now firmly established why Lee was in the wheelchair all the time...can I just express how much I admire him for doing that! I mean, he pretended to be paraplegic for twelve weeks straight in front of an entire crew and cast including little children and fully grown adults! And everyone bought it. I mean...W.O.W!!!
I just watched this movie in my summer school English course. My teacher informed me that apparently at one point during filming, she saw Lee Pace walking, but never knew that everyone was an actor. As my teacher told me, “everyone else was an actor. She was cast although she wasn’t an actress because they wanted a genuine reaction from her.” After seeing Lee walking on set, it took roughly a week to console her because she thought he was legitimately paraplegic.
Tarsem is a genius, you cannot convince me otherwise. The entire film was an absolute masterpiece, there's no concept to it that I don't like. Catinca is adorable, she did such a great job and all her kindness towards Lee is just making my heart melt.
I took a statist course once where we had to act out different kind of scenarios and me and my acting partner had to act out an argument (my character did something wrong and he had to act mad). Let me tell you, it was awful, I almost cried and the teacher had to stop it because she saw how upset I became 😂 Btw, I never appeared in any movie, I think it is not for me 😅
@realMoMoPuFF lol yeah dont take acting classes if you cant handle being yelled at, I learned that one the hard way 😅 I was taking an acting course while dealing with a very not fun home environment and regularly ended up walking out of class crying lmao, acting teachers love getting students to take out their emotions on each other, acting classes are kinda not fun a lot of the time tbh Ive gotta say though, the few professional directors Ive worked with have never once made me cry. Professional directors tend to be nice to actors in my experience, its typically the crew who end up crying in professional settings. One of the most pleasant experiences I had as an actor was on a BBC show. I wasnt doing what the director wanted and I fully expected to just be yelled at or replaced, but they just gave me new notes to help me give them what they wanted and by the end of the day the director thanked me and gave me a handshake. And that was for a background role where I was on screen for like 2 seconds. Acting jobs are cushy af, acting classes are pure hell lol
@@Amber-uh1iy I thought that if I don't try it, I will never know what am I capable of. It turned out I would be a sh1tty actor 😂 I envy you that you was able to take part in productions, it must be very interesting.
I remember the first time I saw this movie even though it was a long time ago. It was a mindblowing experience, it is so beautiful and creative and unique. Catinca and Lee was amazing, and I wish they would have made another movie together.
The act of him pretending to be disabled in front of the crew--especially Catinca--actually made him depressed by the end of filming the hospital scenes, so some of the pain you see is 100% him.
Marmaduke was the first movie I saw Lee Pace in, and quite honestly, we found him cute but we weren't that interested. A few months later, we saw The Fall, since we have forgotten about him in Marmaduke, we looked up who the actor is and lo and behold, it was the guy from Marmaduke. I could still remember our reaction "The dad!". Haha. THE FALL made him from cute to hot. I liked his interaction with Catinca. It was The Fall that made me watch and follow all of Lee Pace's projects. So, in order, Marmaduke, The Fall, Soldier's Girl, Pushing Daisies, Miss Pittigrew Lives for a day, possession, twilight, (yes. I saw it because of him), The Hobbit (got more excited knowing he would be in the franchise)...and so on...Lee Pace!!! Muah. Hahaha
Amazing film. I hope this is re released. I watched this coz I want to see more of Lee Pace. As it happens, I forgot what my intention was and just enjoyed the movie. Everything about this was great, actors, script, cinematography etc. I know this has been inspired by another movie, but it looked very original and paid homage to the first version.
Man, that friendship is simply amazing and adorable! And the director is amazing! "That's the most useless..." I'm giggling like a little girl. Hehehe, and understanding all that stuff in Hindi made me giggle a bit too!
One of my all time favourite film...India is amazing PERIOD! Everyone is amazing...Love the behind the scenes...all that work for this masterpiece...most underrated film ever
I love the way she plays with his hair at 3:18! SO unbelievably adorable! It amazes me to see the friendship that formed between such an odd pair. I loved their dynamic in the film so much... I've never seen such a real bond between two characters before.
Such an amazing film and such a great performance by Lee and Catinca. One of the things they've talked about as well was the scene were Roy wakes up to realize he did not die and gets upset and starts screaming and throwing things, Catinca didnt know ahead of time what was going to happen. So when she freezes in fear and looks around that is just her being genuinely scared and confused until someone playing a nurse escorted her off camera. After the take she was very upset and told them she was not going to do it again and they didnt. The first take was all they needed.
You should upload more of this! This movie is very close to being one of the best I've seen, and no doubt due partly to the unorthadox methods of production. Thank you so much for what you've put up. I only wish more people would watch it and appreciate it, Tarsem had so much passion for this work of art...it's practially a cult film, but as long as I can see a many more times...
Tarsem wanted him to be as real for Catinca as possible, thus he also acted in the hospital scenes (which were shot in sequence) when the camera was not rolling. Even most of the crew did not know, until the last hospital scene. The big reveal is on one of the featurettes on the DVD.
Apparently most of the crew thought he was actually a paraplegic and the hospital scenes were shot chronologically so that the child's actress' performance would be as real as possible. The Red Bandit was listed as played by the actor who played Catinca's father.
I would really like to see the moment they all on set recognized that Lee/Roy is absolutely fine and not disabled!!! :D That means, they filmed the "story"-scenes after the "hospital"-scenes, didn't they?
ooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmggggggggggggg this is my life time favorite movie and now i can watch it all the way ! how they made it. he is reaaaaly talented director !
@minnymich yeah pretty much only lee and the director actually knew that he could actually walk and even the first time roy and alexandria meet was the first time lee and catinca met. they didnt reveal to catinca that he could walk until after they finished shooting at the hospital right when they finished the seen when roy finishes telling her the story. tarsem is a genius.
Lisa Baltzer Is it possible we all have a twin somewhere? I have been told I look like someone else at least 3 times and one lady said I looked a lot like her brother. I am a woman. That was funny!
a friend of me got angry at a girl in town because he was shouting at her thinking she was me. He got upset and thought I was ignoring him so ran up and was like "why the frick are you ignoring me???" and it wasn't even me. But he swears she was my identical twin in every way!
He did it to keep it organic. A lot of children when they act are too obvious, too "precious" in the way they are conscious of themselves...aka they ACT. They are too self-aware of the role and are not IN the role. He wanted to get someone inexperienced and it helped that she stumbled over her english because it makes it believable--instead of having a child actor that can speak her role supremely and perfectly (because...it doesn't feel natural).
@russianargyle Check the imdb site of "The Fall". They acted that way for Catinca. She assumed Lee Pace was paralyzed til the end of the shooting of this movie. They wanted it to make Roy real as much as possible to her. I´m not sure how they shot the bandit scenes together with Pace though. Maybe afterwards, in the end.
Yeah I was wondering how they got around that too. I think all the fantasy shots were overseas and maybe they filmed them last when everybody had found out.

I bought six DVDs for Christmas gifts the year I saw The Fall. My hat is off to the entire crew and cast.
I think he chose her because of her background in the movie. She is a girl/immigrant who already works etc. After seeing this youtubevideo it's only more obvious how authentic Tarsem wanted to be. He wanted the confusion between Roy and Alexandria to feel real and not acted, so why would he choose an american girl and have her act an accent..
lee pace is beautyful actor and in this movie make me sick!thanks to tarsem singh and his dreams when came movie like this......I love very much "THE CELL" with j.lo and the story is amazing!
Catinca did an amazing job in this movie...some child actors are really not believable at all, but she was brilliant. I actually like being part of a secret little The Fall community, but I know what you mean. The movie is one of a kind, in several ways.
Little girl is adorable. And the director actually is very cute, too. Excepting the fact he has been cheating on her about Lee`s injury, of course.
the costume in this movie is amazing..especially Lee's costume as masked bandit..only tall male could pull that off..and he rocks the eyeliner..
This movie fucked me up so bad! I loved it. And you should totally see it!
Such a beautful movie and so terribly underrated
For a massive fan of this film-this was incredible to see!
Lee's expression at 2:37 suggests that that was the first time he met the child actress. I'm wondering if it was.
yep, he says so in the audio commentary
It's such an interesting clip when you know that he was lying about being paralyzed.

There's an interview where he is asked about it and also an interview with Tarsem, where he confirms it. It's somewhere on UA-cam :)
I like to think of myself as a grown man (in some ways) but this movie really got to be too much for me. Amazing film and she was absolutely the star.

I can't believe how much this guy looks like a teenage boy who lived with my family twenty years ago!
Lisa Baltzer Is it possible we all have a twin somewhere? I have been told I look like someone else at least 3 times and one lady said I looked a lot like her brother. I am a woman. That was funny!
patphatcat I met my doppelgänger in high school. Her name was Charlene. When I met her, we even had the same haircut.

Great movie. Have it on dvd. Lee is great
catinca was adorable and a great actress! also, i found it funny that tarsem gave orders in hindi LOL i bet none of the cast actually understood him
Can somebody tell me why Lee Pace is on a wheelchair? Didn't he play as the Rend Bandit too and that character walks?
Yeah I was wondering how they got around that too. I think all the fantasy shots were overseas and maybe they filmed them last when everybody had found out.
Ah, childhood, why did you go away?
She is the most yami girl
I LOVE THIS MOVIE
Did Catinca think that "Roy" was disabled the entire time filming?
me too!
THE BEST
Also, Tarsem is brilliant. Has he made any other films?
영화도 촬영영상도 정말 봐도봐도 안질리고 더 빠진다ㅜ 최고얌
a great film
love when Lee Pace is with this girl.
I love this movie!!!.
yes!
really? That's amazing ! Is there an article about that or something to confirm that. I'd love to read it :)
Was this on the DVD?
Great movie!!!
Still asking to myself why the hell this movie hasn't been released in cinemas of my fucking country.
Anyone knows what Lee "Roy" is whispering to Cantica on 4:30 to 4:33???? Help!!!
amazing movie, I love it
What happened when catinca found out that Roy wasn't Roy and that he hasn't use a wheelchair?
The cast and crew thought Lee Pace was paralyzed just for the Hospital scenes at the beginning of the movie.. They told everyone on set at the end of that location wrap.
Where can I find the behind the scenes for this?
The standard DVD has TWO voice over commentaries. The first with the director and the second with Pace, Soltanakis and Gilroy. I would guess that the Blu Ray has the same, but it is just a guess.
I bought six DVDs for Christmas gifts the year I saw The Fall. My hat is off to the entire crew and cast.
She is damn cute 😍 she made me cry
I think he chose her because of her background in the movie. She is a girl/immigrant who already works etc. After seeing this youtubevideo it's only more obvious how authentic Tarsem wanted to be. He wanted the confusion between Roy and Alexandria to feel real and not acted, so why would he choose an american girl and have her act an accent..
Why was Lee Pace in a wheelchair and getting help on and off the bed??
