    *The Hue Hub Isnt Needed*
after the video has been posted I have since realised that the hub isnt needed and many of you have pointed this out to (thank you for pointing it out)
Just follow the steps in the video but miss out the part when I mention the hue hub.
Only info i could find before i made this video said the hub was needed so I apologise for the miss information

Tried to do it without the hub, worked but now I can't control the bulb from the Hue app anymore... so I think the part with the hub may be required if you want the bulb to stay linked to the hub.

@@flp322 oh interesting, that's that's first I've seen anyone do it that way, mines still working from the day I recorded this so I didn't reset it.
Thanks for the info. Might be something I have to test at some point. Thanks

Amazing, thank you. I've watch other video's on this but yours makes it a lot easier to follow. Plus I found out that it will work for all lights connected through the Hue Bridge, so now one IKEA remote switches on/off everything in my living room!

Thank you Andy, I try to make them easy to follow.
And that is cool, 1 toggle for all off at night then :) I may have to have a play about with that myself, sounds like a great idea :)

Totally works! I just used the actual Touchlink button on the Hub. Works the same way.

Like the video, and very much like your attitude to commenters (very few actually tell people to downvote if they didn't like the video, but the system of course works rather better if they do!), so kudos for that.
It wasn't what I was looking for though. I am under the impression that it's possible to get the remote to show up in Hue (and/or Hue Esstentials) as a controller, so that it can be "programmed" (map commands to each button, multiple presses, long-press, ...).
To just control the bulbs directly from the remote, I don't believe there's any need to pair with the bridge. You just pair the remote with the bulb and off you go. The remote speaks ZigBee directly with the bulbs, as you can easily verify by taking the bridge off power and see that the remote still works.
I am starting to doubt that the Trådfri remote can actually be used as a smart controller in Hue. Unfortunately this video, like the others I've seen, doesn't make that completely clear (perhaps you don't know, which is fine of course).
While I am at it, a rant directed at everyone playing in the "smart home" market. For now, everybody seems to be playing the lock-in game. Most if not all use the same tech under the hood, and they all need to support at least Google Home, Apple HomeKit, and Amazon Alexa in any case. Meanwhile, thousands of app makers have poured millions into exposing "commands" to integrate with the voice assistants. It ought to have been easy by now to get ANY controller that supports one of these platforms (say, GH), and be able to map actions not just to other "smart home" things, but also to the voice commands that have been exposed. It would have been possible, TODAY, to map a button on my IKEA remote to do literally thousands of different things, or any one of a thousand things. If you wanted to, you could make the left/right arrows navigate your spotify playlist, and the "up/down" buttons control volume. Or you could have the on/off button engage "cinema mode", perhaps turning on the TV and stero, lowering some curtains, dimming the lights, setting a particular volume level depending on how late it is, and put your phone in "do not disturb"...
And that's just the lowest-hanging fruit that everybody ignores for the sake of lock-in that can't last anyway. Smart-things will not take off unless they become interoperable and tolerably easy to use, and everybody knows this.

Hi think you for the comment.
The like dislike ratio tells me what people like so I always encourage people to use either button as it lets me know what to and not to do in the future.
As for needing the hub, I have since tested this alot since this video so maybe I should do another video on this but you are correct the hub isn't actually needed, the controller controls the bulb directly. I was going off information that was available at the time in other poorly made videos I found.
As for showing up in the Hue app to be used other than controlling a single bulb there is no way that I currently know of (even just did a little research just now to find any info on it). If you or anyone else know's if there is a way I would like to be informed and may do a update video on that :)
As for your Rant, I 100% agree and Hue unfortunately are the worse for it, If I knew it was going to be so bad I would have boycotted Hue altogether, I will not buy another Hue product, Some of the stuff that come from china seem to work better but then you run the risk of the chinese servers going offline so its a little catch 22.
And I agree with Smart-Things, I refuse to look at it with the current state of things, I hope they improve things as allough I refuse to use them they do have some interesting applications.
Thank you for the comment and sorry the video wasn't quite what you wanted.

That's a cool bit of kit mate,
I recently got my first wifi bulb, it works with my phone (Google Assistant) or (Google Home) it's pretty cool, i will be getting more, and maybe some automated plug sockets eventually...

Yeah mate loving the cross compatibility that most of them have now..
my brain was doing overtime thinking about what could be done with the "Scene modes" with multiple devices, when i first got it.. Of course though my Mrs refuses to use Google assistant point blank, but i'll work on her, she'll come around eventually Lmao...

Does this work with TRÅDFRI bulbs as well as Hue? I have a Hue gateway with several TRÅDFRI bulbs. When I try to pair with a remote, I can control using either/or, but not both the remote and the app. I have seen several videos with people controlling Hue lights with the TRÅDFRI remote...it seems like it may not work with TRÅDFRI bulbs? I have tried to reconnect the light after pairing with the remote, but don’t seem to have success unless I reset the bulb. But then I lose the pairing to the remote. This is after having paired the remote to the Hue gateway per your instructions.
I saw the note below regarding firmware. I just bought this remote...could this be the issue?

    • @welshtony1
      @welshtony1  4 роки тому

I honestly have no idea as I have yet to try that. But I have just read that the way I have shown in the video will get the bulb and remote to pair but only with that bulb,
As why your app isn't working I don't know.
The only thing I can think of with the Ikea Bulbs and Remote the Ikea TRÅDFRI Gateway would be required to get it all to work seamlessly, personally if I had more TRÅDFRI items I would buy the gateway as its only £25 and will help.
Sorry I can't be to much more help. I am now seriously considering buying more Ikea TRÅDFRI items to do some testing and videos on.
      Thank you for your comment

I appreciate your reply. My theory is that it works for Hue bulbs because Hue uses a proprietary protocol to communicate with devices. So Hue pairs with the bulb using their protocol, while the Trådfri remote pairs with the bulb using the ZigBee protocol...so essential there are two different methods of communication controlling the device, so they don’t conflict.
I imagine that it’s possible that the situation is the same with the Trådfri gateway, which is how it supports both remotes and the gateway simultaneously. Either that, or they all play nice because they use the same ZigBee network.
So I’m thinking that when you connect a Trådfri bulb to the Hue gateway using TouchLink/ZigBee, the bulb will only support one device controlling it via that method at one time. Once you pair a remote, it takes the place of the gateway and vice-versa.
The good news is that I don’t need dual-control of more than a few bulbs in the house, so I can always purchase 2 more Hue bulbs to fill that need and it would still be less expensive than purchasing a Trådfri gateway. I already have 2 Hue bulbs that I can swap with the Trådfri ones I have installed, so I can get this functionality working where I need it.
Thanks again for your prompt reply and for your videos. They are very helpful. I will “like and subscribe” thusly!

Yeah Phillip's are a really finicky company when it comes to allowing there products work with other companies, although they are ZigBee I to suspect they built something into it to block other devices.
If I could go back I would never have bought any Hue products but nevermind.
Also that's for the Sub, I appreciate it :)

The 5-button Ikea remote control has some limitations - it can change colors/temperature only if paired with Ikea bulbs (inside Philips Hue system I've tryied it in configurations with many other brands with no success); it has also one additional function - if on/off button is hold 3-5 seconds it sets default 2700K white and 100% luminance (tested only with Tradfri bulb).
It isn't scene controller at all.
I don'n know if it is proprietary protocol?

Beware that the newest TRÅDFRI remote firmware 2.3.014 is INCOMPATIBLE with Hue!!! You are better off not upgrading your remote for now.

  • @ChrisThistlethwaite
    @ChrisThistlethwaite 4 роки тому +1

    Chris Thistlethwaite
This has nothing to do with the Hue. The remote is paired with the bulb NOT the hub. In fact the hub isn't needed at all for this as zigbee buttons will pair without a hue hub. You don't actually get the button in the Hue hub like a Phillips button so this is mostly worthless.
