How to Pair 2 or More Remotes/Sensors with TRADFRI from IKEA (Instructions in Description)

  • Did you buy a few different TRÅDFRI remotes from IKEA for your smart lights? Didn't buy a gateway? This is how I paired multiple remotes together so they are linked to the same group.
    Step 0:
If you have been pairing both remotes already and didn't work, factory reset both remotes by pressing the sync button 4 times really fast (within 5 seconds). Once both remotes have been reset, move onto step 1.
    Step 1:
Pair main remote with lights (in my case, I paired the controller remote with my two colour changing lights)
    Step 2:
Walk away from your lights (at least a metre) and hold both remotes together.
    Step 3:
Reveal back panel of both remotes so you can see the sync button.
    Step 4:
Press and hold the main remote (the one you just paired the lights to) for 1 second then press and hold the second remote (do not let go of the first remote, hold both of them). Press both buttons for 10 seconds. You will see a faint led flash.
NB: You should have now successfully paired both remotes together. If in the case where you have a sensor and controller remote, I have noticed that the sensor only works if you turn off the lights with the controller first, otherwise the timer does not go off automatically to switch off.

Thanks to you and a little more clarity from Maribel Marin, below, I totally solved my problem with my Nymane 5 spot ceiling lamp fitted with 5 Tradfri warm / cool GU 10 dimmer lights and Ikea motion sensor not synching .
    So here’s the right sequence:
1 Start with switching off the wall ( or mains ) power for your lights
2.Reboot both remote controls by pressing the pairing switches 4 times in 5 secs on both devices
3.Switch on your lights at the main switch ( either by the wall switch if you have one or by the mains power board if you don’t have a wall switch )
    4. Pair the light(s) with the circular Tradfri remote, holding the pairing button down right next to each light for a good 15 secs until it stops dimming up and down. Do this for each light.
    5. This is the most important part that no one else has stated, and it took me a few goes to realise it: On the circular remote, press the on / off switch to turn all your lights OFF
6.Go to another room, with both the circular remote and the motion sensor and close the doors.
    7. Press the pair button on the circular remote first , being careful not to press any buttons on the front , press for one second but don’t let go , then right next to it, press the pair button on the motion sensor HOLDING BOTH DOWN AT THE SAME TIME for at least 10 seconds ( thanks to Mirabel for this point )
    8. Open the door and go out the those troublesome lights , hang up the motion sensor , and voila ! ( or as we Aussies like to say “ Bugger Me ! “) your Ikea lights will come on and stay on for 3 minutes

Thanks for the tip. I have 2 desks in a study and wanted to pick up more movement from either person to keep the lights on - one sensor near each desk. I already had a Tradfri motion sensor linked to a ceiling FLOALT LED panel (60cm x 60cm 34W). I added an identical Tradfri motion sensor by pairing the second one (new, out of the box) to the first one (without resetting the first one), holding down both link buttons until the red LEDs pulsed on the front.
I put one sensor in a drawer to confirm that the other one would turn on the light with motion, then swapped them to confirm that they are interchangeable for motion purposes. Both are set to daylight mode (i.e. always detect motion).
I infer that the logic is: if either sensor detects motion in the last 3 minutes, the lights remain on, and if neither sensor detects motion for 3 minutes, the lights will go off. It is a logical OR operation.
So 2 sensors paired work. Can anyone tell us what the upper limit is?

    Ong thank you so much.
Like other people said below in the chat, I had to reset both, pair the remote with the bulb again, move to another room and then follow your instructions - pair the original remote with the sensor.
Hold original remote for 1sec and without letting go, hold the sensor pair button and continue holding for 10sec.
Only thing was that there was no light on the remotes to show they worked. But it did!!!
Now, I also want to note that once it senses me, I turn it off with the remote, but I need to wait 3min before it'll sense me again with the sensor to turn on automatically... 🤷🏻‍♀️

2024: I already had a TRADFRI motion sensor and just bought a new STYRBAR remote. After some time and unsuccessful attempts to get them to work together, I found a solution. The steps are slightly different from these:
    1. Reset the TRADFRI sensor and the STYRBAR remote (Press 4 times pairing button)
    2. Paired the sensor with the bulb.
    3. I paired the remote with the sensor by pressing the pairing button on the sensor first for one second, then the button on the remote and holding both for 10 seconds.
    4. When both devices start flashing, it means that the pairing is completed successfully.
If you pair first the remote with the bulb, and then the sensor with the remote, the light will not turn off. Only the light color will change to default when the motion is detected.

Thanks for this. But I have had absolutely no luck with my Tradfri drivers for wardrobe strip lights. Can't seem to get the motion sensor to work at all, even when I unpair the wireless control. Did you pair both individually before doing this, or just paired the wireless control and paired them to each other? Also, when you leave the room, do they turn off themselves?

    • @LetMeFixIT
      @LetMeFixIT  4 роки тому

When I leave the room, they turn off based off of a timer (1min, 5min or 10min)
I did not pair them individually. They are paired as in the video.
When you pair your motion sensor to the strip light, there's a link button on the bottom...I believe if you first pair the controller to the strip light, then pair the sensor to the controller, it will activate. Just don't do it too close to the strip light as you may accidentally pair it to the light instead of the controller.

Thank you! Also tried this with 2 x little square tradfri remotes, the cheaper one. Here's how I got it working:
    1. Factory reset both remotes pressing the pairing button 4 or 5 times quickly
    2. Going around each lamp and turning the light on manually, then pairing each light to one tradfri remote
    3. In the same room (but more than 10cm away from be a smart bulb) , I held down the pair button on the first tradfri remote that I had just paired with the lightbulbs, and then held down the pair button on the other remote that was not yet paired with anything. You'll know you have paired both tradfri remotes when there's a faint red glow from both remotes. I held both for about 10 seconds.
    4. Done!

Thanks for this. Worked like a charm! however after doing so while remote and sensor worked to control the light none of these three appeared in the app. What I ended up doing to get remote and sensor AND app is the following: 1) I reset light bulb and both remotes. Tricky part with the light is you need to switch it on off 6 times and then it flickers - but it takes quite a while to flicker after having done on/off 6 times. 2) via the app I added a light, chose to do so with a remote. 3) this asks me to pair remote to hub (hold button 10 secs), the hub then flashes. 4) then pair remote with light - same thing as the hub just with the light. 5) then in the app select the room or group now showing light and remote, and on the top line via three dots select: add control mechanism. Select what type (sensor in my case) and pair sensor to hub. Quite complex but all now works

    • @LetMeFixIT
      @LetMeFixIT  3 роки тому

Hmm...yes, I believe this should work. The light bulbs don't know how to remember the controllers. The controllers remember the lights. Each controller will pair with a light, you can pair more the one to it. I know that because I control two lights with one remote .
eg: controller 1 pairs with light A; controller 2 pairs with light B; controller 3 pairs with light A and B.

I've only ever been able to change the light colour when they're in the same room.
