Check out sengled bulbs instead, it does require a hub but they were selling it for $7 CAD/bulb on sale. Especially a no brainer if you have a smartthings hub
Hue is very versatile, has tons of functions in the bridge and bulbs. The lights have very accurate colors, decent brightness and can be dimmed further down than any I've seen so far. No other product I tried out matches their quality. I still have products of other brands in my home, OSRAM plugs and IKEA kitchen lights. Thanks to ZigBee they are all compatible with the Hue bridge and work seemlessly in one system. Makes me strongly disagree with Linus here.
I’ve never ever had an issue with Hue. It works every time. By comparison, I’ve worked with other smart bulbs integrating into other systems… and those occasionally have issues that require I delete, re-find and install, and then rebuild all the routines involved. And Hue can often be purchased at discount; just last week, I got a pair of Hue strips on sale for $20 less per strip than usual. So this is less about ‘ripoff’, and more about “you get what you pay for”.
that is a fair comment... I am currently using a mirabella system of lights in Australia and even with dedicated ip ports on my network I am getting occasional drop outs... will progressively move to Hue now that I have bitt the bullet and gotten the hub to work with an pair of sensors.
My thoughts exactly, maybe they have improved since this video, but not only they are less expensive than mentioned here (got most of them on discounted bundles) but to me the main appeal that gives them the edge is how everything just works, and the app is very intuitive as mentioned by Linus. If you are not living alone, this intuitive UX is key
10000000% since this vid came out I’ve gone through multiple eco systems, landing on HomeKit and Meross, and I’m so fed up having to delete EVERYTHING in the whole house and rebuild it all losing all of our presets over and over and over and over again. Meanwhile the Hue bulbs work the same as day one.
What i do when I game on my xbox, I got the strips in the back of my TV creating one heck of a badass ambient. Really good for watching movies as well.
Man, this really needs an update. Hue has Global settings now for a some time already and all the 3rd party support for Hue plus the sync features make it worth it way more. Also Hue are on sale often, I only buy them at half price.
also, philips hue. produced by signify is a carbon neutral company, cares for their workers and tries to use a lot of recycled material. But i guess price is all that matters.
Yeah, I question the "thousands of dollars" drawback of Hue and Lifx, too. Who's replacing 40 lights with smart bulbs in their house? Majority of those lights are assuredly hardwired overheads controlled by switches. They don't need to change color (use a few lamps to set mood lights), so just hardwire in smart switches to control them. $35 bucks each to control a group of light bulbs rather than $60 per bulb.
You forgot the TRÅDFRI line from IKEA, similar prices to Yeelight AND HomeKit integration. And much better support from popular home automation software suites.
An unknown difference is security. We keep adding devices to our home network and it’s nearly impossible to know which of these is the most secure. You should do a video on securing your home network from “IOT” devices.
You guys joke, but IOT devices like these lightbulbs are ripe for a potential hacker or virus setting up a beachhead inside your network and allowing more damaging things in. Putting them all on their own network, like a guest network, is one way to help limit their potential damage.
Honestly the HUE platform is great and the light quality and integration with other platforms is super dope as well. It is premium but I have replaced all my lights in the house and the connectivity is nice.
Also, Ive tried quite a few but in secret so my Lifx and Hue bulbs dont know Iam sleeping around - but NO bulbs on the market Ive come upon are able to produce the amount of light that Lifx and Hue can when used in a color mode. The low end stuff does the range oif whites fine especially for the price, but as soon as select a color the light output seems reduced by quite a bit... to the point where no amount of them in 1 room can adequately light a room. I get full color bulbs to use full color! Doesnt matter if its 10x cheaper if the functionality i bought it for isnt there then its just e-waste. I was a relatively early adopter and the amount Ive spent is painful to consider for light bulbs but man, I freaking love them. Oh yeah Sylvania Lightify actually had a decent full color recessed / can light product in the sense that it could put out good light while in a color mode, and like the Lifx and Hue the colors were vibrant but man their firmware is so buggy, and they ended up closing up shop, shutting down the Lightify cloud... luckily they pushed one last update that made them fully local control so the product wasnt just instantly unusable - sucks thats a big plus for a company these days but not many actually do that, so its points in my book.
As an electrician who understands how color temperatures work, I have to say that LIFX's displaying of the color temp is a huge pro for me. I can't stand when I can't enter a color value directly and have to use that ridiculous touch map.
@@silentKeys20 I mean if LIFX can do it, I don't see why other companies can't. Basically, I want a way to enter the same values for all the lights, instead of having them all be slightly different because of the color wheel's lack of precision.
@@PaulGuy I just got my first HUE lights, and they do have option to make light groups, that you can control as one. I dont know, did they have this 2 years ago tough..
like the features, setup was difficult for some of my devices (August Door lock, ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxhB5YOMNj04GuoAosExygP4cH-dKeb4aB Bose speaker)... but all switches and outlets (5), thermostat, tankless water heater. Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....
I second this! Also theres not much talk in therms of expandability of the ecosystem (does the system only have lightbulbs or can you add different types of light like lightstrips and such?) wish they went deeper into that and not focus only on price :/
There's not actually, Hue from Gen 1 to 2 and 3 changed massively, the brightness of each color has improved and changes from brand to brand, it depends on the array of LEDs, what spectrum they can reproduce and how they are programmed to work togeather as no LED can recreate the entire visible spectrum. kinda unprofessional. It's not that hard to just use a different model phone or just show the straight screen recording. Especially when they put an ad in it
One of the reasons why I argue that phone screens should have square corners and to put buttons/fingerprint scanner/cameras/speakers in the top/bottom bezel area. If you have more screen at the top, but with curved corners cut out and notch in the middle missing, to view rectangular content (basically everything) you either miss part of it or it is moved down to where the square corners would exist. At the bottom where the corners are cut out make you miss part of the content, or again move it away from the edge. Same thing with the buttons-swipe up for on screen buttons that reside where the captive ones used to exist...the same area that content gets moved out of the be able to not have the corners clipped...so why not just leave the actual buttons. Phones might have more of an "art" to them, but we are taking steps backwards in terms of use.
I run them localy on a Home Assistant instance and block them from accessing the wider internet. Super snappy and really well integrated. Basically eliminates any security risk.
I’ve used Philips Hue with HomeKit for awhile now and there’s no turning back. The fact I can run automation and use my phone to turn my lights on before I get home is great. Is it expensive? Yeah probably. Do I care? Absolutely not.
Right? Just use the bezel of an iPhone 8 or something! This is just annoying. And if you need to have the latest iPhone in your video, then just use one of the X or Xs that I'm sure someone at LMG has.
Phillips Hue isn't cheap, but the system is very reliable and easy to setup/manage in my experience (i have loads of hue kit). Once you have smart home stuff e.g. lights controlled via app or voice assistance like an amazon echo or google home you'll wonder why you didn't get it before. The colored hue bulbs are quite pricey, but the regular white dimmable bulbs are under £20.
And don't forgot the open API so you dare free to create your own apps and connect it to other things.

If you have access to cheap easy to install smart wallswitches I would go for them. But where I live it seems those are very expensive.... Like several time more expensive than Hue. So they're worth it here.
I agree to an extent. I've used hue bulbs and light strips for a few years now, software reliability is great. The bulbs I haven't had an issue yet other than the gen 2 bulbs and gen 3 bulbs have the exact same markings on them so if you mix them up you can't pick them apart again. What the hell hue. And the light strip quity is bad. Every light strip I have owned from hue, has had a one foot stretch of lights that just decides one day it is always going to be a random color other than the one you choose, and after googling, is a common problem. That's a big issue for me. I didn't fork over that money for less than 6 months out of a lightstrip. I tried lifx for a while, the lights themselves are FAR superior. But I think I got 1 bulb to actually pair correctly. I tried two batches. Had to go back to hue

No, it's a rip off, even the Chinese ones are over priced, you realize all LED lights that you buy for $2 already have circut boards in them. How much more work would it be to add a wireless module & controller in them? Not much. Even the Yeeyee lights are overpriced for what they are. However I also have no intention of using smart bulbs, their a waste of time. I can stand up & shut off the light switch, I don't need my phone to do that.

Four years later and I'm totally sick of all wifi switches and plugs. They constantly disappear from my network. From kasa to lifx. WiFi was an easy choice, but not a smart one. In contrast, my lutron switches have never disappeared in the same timeframe. Not once. I'm switching to hubs and not looking back. More security and reliability goes a long way for a few extra bucks.

xiaomi and xiaomi owned companies have an overwhelmingly comprehensive consumer programable devices (smart home) ecosystem; however, they are only focusing on Chinese market as of now. As a result, UI is only intuitive for Chinese consumers. Translation to English and Alexa support is really just a cherry on top.
Fynn Haggenmüller its probably only possible with an apple Phone, then you can set an thing that siri does when you say yeeyeey or maybe hey siri, yee yee it will work
I really dont see the appeal of smart lights. On the other hand, I would love to see you review *smart* radiator *thermostats* . You know, when I want to heat the bathroom up before I spend an unnecessarily long time there because of my smartphone :P
I bought them for my room. When I work the day shift I have to wake up at 2:30AM. I have the lights come on simulating sunrise to try to make me wake up more naturally. It works well for that. I feel more refreshed than when I just have an alarm go off suddenly. As far as converting my entire house to smart lights I don't see the point.
I mean, it's a bathroom, you don't know (that far) ahead of time when it is needed. Might as well keep it slightly warmer than the rest of the place all the time
There's no better pussy magnet than coming home and tapping a button on your phone to light up the room with some fancy mood color. Just avoid Red, it makes you look like a serial killer.
I use them almost everywhere in my appartment. I use motion sensors to turn the lights on and off as needed and the LED tech makes them use less energy. different colors make sense during different times of the day and the ability to turn off the lights when I forgot after leaving home is an added bonus. some rooms also run on a timed script so that I do not need to come into a dark house. location scripts help there as well btw. And I love my voice commands through Siri or Alexa if my hands are full and I want to turn the light on or off.
Inspecting hackability would have been interesting. Hue has an easy to use API for control from computers. Especially control via Raspberry Pis or microcontrollers is interesting as they offer a wide range of sensors.
Nowhere do we talk about CRI or color rendering index of the 3 systems (at least for the "W" in RGBW). this is the real "quality" control of those lights.

I got the hue lights because they're the leaders on the market. So many apps only have integration with hue lights and no other lights. Sleep as android and flux is two examples. I also use Tasker and have the Autohue app as a plugin and it works really well. Because of this the lights are worth it in my opinion. And I kind of view it as future proofing. ALL THOSE UNUPDATED INSECURE SMART-CRAPS. How long will they keep firmware up to date? LED is supposed to last years, decades even. @@Alexlfm the Hue bridge works through your local network, so you can keep using it even if your internet connection goes down, or the company drops support. It would be really important to look at the "quality" of the light (wavelength distribution, CRI). Light has a crucial influence on the human psyche, so of what use is it to save some money now to suffer from eye strain and/or emotional disorders?
Very much. It is also a huge factor in the price for LED lights. So it might explain part of the price difference. Also, Hue will still work in 10 years because it's a self contained solution. How does that work with the other two?
@@GJBedrin Incandecent light bulbs (I suppose this is what you mean) produce an extremely natural light, no matter how cheap they are. It just lies in their physical principle. With an LED you can only try to replicate that natural spectrum as good as possible.

I don’t think philips hue is a complete rip off. Expensive yes. My apartment is fully fitted with them for nearly 5 years now. None of these bulbs failed since I bought them. I still remember the time of the legacy bulbs. A period where you had to keep bulbs in stock cause they could fail anytime. What I miss is an estimate it really cost to install hue in a house. I know Linus was only talking about the color bulbs. But are people actually putting colors in every room? Do people really want RGB in for example the toilet? What will the cost be for a actual house setup fitted with hues or lifx. My hues already returned my investment by savings on the energy bill
I think I actually spend more on electrical now that my whole apartment is kitted out in hue. I find I leave the lights on longer because it's take longer to issue a voice command or pull out my phone than it does to hit a switch on the way out of a room. Mind you I only have hue switches installed in a couple of places, perhaps with hue switches all over the place I could save money on electrical.
I got a bunch of the colour ones for "sleep hygiene", so if anything I want them in places like the bathroom and kitchen for before and after bed. Cost wise it wasn't too bad, the halogen spot style ones come up relatively cheap now and then. One's seemingly failed in the bathroom though, I think humidity has probably not helped there. If you want to get it a bit cheaper, usually one fitting will come up heavily reduced every so often. So a screw fitting might be a lot cheaper than a bayonet. You can then either change the fittings or get adapters fairly cheaply, but it's a bit of a hassle.
I believe the next big step in home energy savings is actually dropping lighting system to 12 volts like in a camper, then you can run all your leds of that VS stepping down the volts and converting at every bulb. Those hot bases are due to resistance that ='s watts and $$
I've got a few of the Ikea lights with my hue lights and they are fine. It depends on the light fw though.. I'd love a smart bulb round-up like they did with wireless earbuds. I've been using C by GE stuff and while the Android app acts weird and requires an account, the hardware is excellent for the price.
If I use the app to shut off a GE smart bulb (CYNC?) then my house guests can not turn the light on? Hue has boxes to go behind wired switches to remedy this. Sounds cool….
I prefer paying the extra premium of Philips Hue, just to get the 'ecosystem' which plays well with most apps and systems. Not just Google Home, but "Sleep as Android" and similar apps is also important to me. Time saved in setup-time and convenience is more valuable than the price difference.

You did not mention the powerusage of the bulbs. Yeelight consumes much more power, when in idle. I don't know the exact numbers but it is not that little. This is because the alsways on WIFI connection uses much more power than the Phillips HUE connection. So if you turn off your lights (via your lightswitches) Yeelight will be cheaper. But if you only use the idle mode you should DEFINITELY consider Phillips HUE. You could also implement the xiaomi smart light switches to controll your yeelights 100% wirelessly.
@hedronic_octa Actually this is not true. There is a german reviewer who measured the power consumption of Hue and Yeelight lamps. If you use more than 3 lamps, Hue becomes way more power saving than Yeelight. Here´s the vid with the calculations at 3:06: ua-cam.com/video/jEZgyy7NW_g/v-deo.html
@hedronic_octa Hmm, I don't want to be a smart ass, but the power consumption doesn't differ from country to country, so no matter where you live, the costs are higher. @@notmenotme614 It's not just the convenience to me. I see an actual practical use with smart lighting systems. I have been using smart bulbs in my apartment for a couple years now, and had several brands until last month. I had LIFX and a couple value brands from Amazon. It was fine until I had to change my router password and had to reprogram all 21 of my bulbs. If was frustrating enough that I bought Hue lights to replace all of the bulbs. To save some money, I went with all white bulbs since the functionality of the RGB was never utilized on the LIFX bulbs. The software compatibility is what is now a high priority and Phillips Hue works pretty well with Alexa for voice control. After spending 450 bucks, lighting has been finished and I am pretty satisfied.
Got Philips hue all throughout my house and it was completely worth it. Buy the startersets including the hub when they are at a discount and sell the hub. The price per bulb is very low that way and I also bought some white lights for places like bathrooms where I don't need a disco effect. I have all my lights powered 24/7 and I connected all wall switches to a z-uno that passes the wall switch signal through z-wave to my domotica setup. (home assistant on a synology, also using z-wave motion detectors) It's also great how the philips hue is integrated in everything. My domotica system can control them very well as well as google home (voice) and from apps such as plex. (lights go out when a movie starts and they go on again on pause or stop) All in all I will not switch easily from Philips hue to something else, the only thing I miss is ps4 integration so that the color matches the game/video I'm playing. That does work in windows with an app which is a really nice feature.
I have an alternate brand, after 6 months the bulbs didn’t work the same. None of them can hit their max brightness setting. There’s a preset apart from the regular colors for like a florescent type glow or a standard glow, both presets are broken, the florescent is not bright and comes off more purple, and the standard one, which was the brightest, almost turns off the bulb it produces virtually no light and habitually flickers. Other colors still work fine, but just thought I would mention my experience with an alternative brand
My one concern with the Yee Lights is security. They hook up to WiFi and call out to the internet. Knowing cheap smart home appliances, this is just asking for disaster. You could set them up on a vlan with firewall rules that restrict them to just the yeelight servers, but that’s not viable for many users.
@@TheMrVengeance I have a friend with light-sensitive epilepsy and who comes over to my house from time to time. If someone were to maliciously flicker my lights at a high speed, it could trigger a seizure. But that's not the disaster I had in mind. I am more thinking that poorly secured lights could be a vector to attack other network devices. In the 2014 Target hack that exposed customers' credit card information, the hackers got in through the air conditioner control network. What is to say poorly secured lights couldn't do the same? Further, a number of routers and smart appliances were compromised and took part in the Mirai botnet which attacked cloud flare and crippled parts of their network. I want no part in that.
I'm happy for once about living in South Africa. By the time we actually start using smart lighting and general smart home products there will be clear cut options. (We do actually have smart light and smart home product but they are not as easily accessible as just going to Wal-Mart )
I live in the states and still see no real point in it all. Oh no i had to get up to switch the light on, what a travesty. I love tech but this is a trend i just can't get behind.
I really find this kind of product pretty dumb... I don't need my lights to be RGB... It's really not a problem to get up and turn them on/off... It's easy to install a light switch that can dim lights as well. And ultimately... There are much more useful appliances that I would be willing to spend my money on than RGB wireless lighting for my home xD
I know this video is a bit old, but how could you ignore Philips Hue's Sync app on PC? Sync your lights up to your movies and games? It's honestly the most immersive way to watch movies/play games.
I used to buy tuya/smart lights, a day i started n try hue lights... Its a totally different dimension, quality and the light is delicious for my eyes. They're pricey yes but damn totally worth it!

Hue's are the best! Only ones you can sync with gaming as far as i know.
I would still stick with PHILIPS. Because I'm Dutch. Every light bulb I buy is made by Philips.
Look up Yee Lights, they are 38-40 per bulb now. They raised their price.
If you are not living alone, this intuitive UX is key
and they can sync to your music or games with PC app, they're cool af
10000000% since this vid came out I’ve gone through multiple eco systems, landing on HomeKit and Meross, and I’m so fed up having to delete EVERYTHING in the whole house and rebuild it all losing all of our presets over and over and over and over again.

These are just rgb lights, not monitors, they'd be quite identical, and easily changeable.
There's not actually, Hue from Gen 1 to 2 and 3 changed massively, the brightness of each color has improved and changes from brand to brand, it depends on the array of LEDs, what spectrum they can reproduce and how they are programmed to work togeather as no LED can recreate the entire visible spectrum.

lol i think they recorded on different model of iPhone
it's just a mockup who cares?
kinda unprofessional.

I also use Tasker and have the Autohue app as a plugin and it works really well. Because of this the lights are worth it in my opinion. And I kind of view it as future proofing.

I started using smart lights because everyone leaves lights on in my house and I was tired of coming home to an empty house with every light on.... I figured there'd be a company like YeeLight eventually when I started buying the Hue stuff. I have 6 bulbs in total in my place and 2 LED strips and I feel like the money I invested was worth it. I haven't looked back and thought, that was a waste. I also think the Hue setup on my phone was super easy to use and once I setup a few timers, programmed the remote/switch and stuff, I haven't had to adjust it since. I think eventually the Hues stuff will get cheaper... there have been some really good sales that bring down the prices to half in most cases for me.
I have wanted a smart home for a while. I started November with a google home for my Birthday. I had used it 80% of the time on my phone. I got a hive hub on eBay brand new for £43.00 inc p&p. I Started off with the smart plug as I was sick of them cheap timber lights. We have a hall table lamp. But the timer kept clapping out. I would go to bed and it would either not be on coming home or it would be on till 12:30 AM when trying to sleep. I loved it so have ordered some GU10s I only order when things are on discount or and offer. I have loved been able to turn off my lights when out. I work in care and have funny hours. I set my bed table lamp on to wake me up on days off I just switch the main lamp switch off.
Agree. It's just amazing that it switches off automagically. With normal bulbs there was always someone forgetting to put them all out at night.
Linus being a PC guy I was wondering, why you did not talk about Hue Sync, you can sync to video, music and games. How did you leave that out ?!

I came back to this after testing every other brand. Hue by far was the easiest to setup and use. Every other brand always ended in frustration and headaches.
I tested all the stuff even linus beloved zwave crap. Never had a broken hue device. I got 40+ devices (bulbs sensors switches etc.)
Of my zwave stuff half of it is broken after 3 years. Go Hue , save headaches and money
My hues already returned my investment by savings on the energy bill
on less you had old school light bulbs you are not saving that much
I think I actually spend more on electrical now that my whole apartment is kitted out in hue. I find I leave the lights on longer because it's take longer to issue a voice command or pull out my phone than it does to hit a switch on the way out of a room.
Mind you I only have hue switches installed in a couple of places, perhaps with hue switches all over the place I could save money on electrical.
I have Hue also, but i already had 2 lamps failing in 1 year :(
I got a bunch of the colour ones for "sleep hygiene", so if anything I want them in places like the bathroom and kitchen for before and after bed.
Those hot bases are due to resistance that ='s watts and $$
What about IKEA?
I have IKEA lights, or spot lights, because I have 40 in my house, so I got them and programed them to work with the Hue :) Great!
Ikea lights work with the Hue? Awesome.
You have my attention, do explain how.
Got the Ikeas too. They're cheap and works fine for my applications
I've got a few of the Ikea lights with my hue lights and they are fine. It depends on the light fw though.. I bought one that was at the wrong fw version (didn't work to hue) and because I didn't have the Ikea hub I couldn't flash the fw to whatever the newer version was. It still works as a dumb light though..
Not yet sponsored by IKEA perhaps
thumbs up for the nads shot alone

For example, as a photographer I can easily change the light temperature in the room where I edit my photos, making it easier for me to get accurate colors. After I'm done I can change to a more relaxing color temperature and dim the lights.
Then there is the option to use the lights as a wakeup light, which is something I already did in the past with a separate light on my nightstand.
The Hue Sync app is also great, syncing the lights to what I see on my screen while playing games is really cool! While Playing DBZ Kakarot the whole room was red with flashing lights as I beat Frieza to a pulp while Namek was exploding. It was awesome! Same in Doom Eternal.
I wouldn't make the switch to a system like that all at once. I would switch out lights one by one.

My domotica system can control them very well as well as google home (voice) and from apps such as plex.
