Differin RUINED my skin... LOTS of pictures included

  • So... I tried Differin for my acne and it did exactly the opposite of what I expected.
Thanks for all the comments but after consulting with a PROFESSIONAL, it was deemed that I had a reaction to the Differin gel. This is bound to happen. Everyone has different skin and everyone's skin reacts differently to different products. Differin = not for me. So you can keep the "You didn't use it correctly" comments to yourself lol. I applied it exactly like it said.

differin honestly did this to me. My dr however, told me to keep going to 4 months and then boom it all changed. The problems with products like these is that people don't stick at it long enough through purging and get turned off by the purging due to the high skin cell turnover rate. Same for tretinoin... at first it can give you hell before you see any results. if anyone is watching this, people don't get turned off becuse everyone's experience is different

This is idiotic advice. If you’re still hardcore purging after month 1 and 2, this is no longer a purge and it likely is a skin reaction.

Acne is used too easily. But it’s not a general term for a zit or break out. It’s an actual skin condition many have to deal with. This is something to keep in mind when looking for skincare products.

Literally had the same progress as you. My acne went from mild to moderate. Ditched it after the 12 week mark and my skin has been doing better. About 4 years ago, I had an absolutely miserable experience with it as well. I literally thought I was cursed. I got the prescription kind just to try it because I told my doctor about my very mild forehead breakout that was annoying me and I made the mistake of applying it to my entire face without testing it. Hours later, I had chemical burn and pimples on every inch of my face. I have never been more devastated in my life. My skin went from basically clear to a complete disaster and when I read about it online about what the hell was happening to me, comments said oh you’ll go through purging and then it will get better so I used it for 4 more nights until I was at the point where the burns were so bad water hurt to put on it and I had acne on literally every millimeter of my face even where I’ve never had it before in my life. I literally thought I had died and gone to hell or something. The worst part for me was the chemical burns did not heal for over 3 or 4 months. The acne marks stayed for 2 or 3 years -and I still have one acne mark from it over 4 years later that never healed. I ended up having some kind of reaction after a year because my skin was so damaged that it basically turned bright red and literally hot as fire (it was like rosacea) because of the damage - but that has gone away for the most part finally. I am almost traumatized from this because it destroyed my face so much and did not heal for years. The literal worst experience of my life and biggest regret. I hate that you had to experience it as well but it is nice to know I’m not alone.

Seriously, same. I used it for 6 months as directed and even reached out to a doctor to make sure I was using it correctly because I was developing acne where I never had before. I was also experiencing legitimate pain all over my face and avoided the sun effectively. (I did Zoom school for a year and even at home I was wearing spf 50 and no makeup). In addition, I experienced the eyelid irritation and used Vaseline to try and protect the eye area before use. I did so much more damage and acquired so much more hyperpigmentation after using this product. I’m so glad you posted this. I’ve been off of it for two weeks and my skin has dramatically cleared up, my eyelid irritation is gone, dryness is gone. Hi! Thank you sooo much for this! My Dr told me to use this for some breakouts I was having but this did not even feel safe. I ditched it after 5 days. The first thing I noticed was feeling sun burned in 75 degree weather, red flag but i ignored it. Then my face just keeps burning. Everywhere I applied is raw and peeling. The only thing that doesn’t burn my face is neosporin and idk if it’s even safe that I am using that. I decided yesterday I wasn’t going to use it anymore. Today I woke up with swollen eyes and redness under my eyes (I did not apply differin here). Thank you for making this video because I needed to see it. Differin is not for everyone. I just stopped using Differin today and have been using it for 16 WEEKS. Literally I don't know why but sometimes it will give me clear skin for like 3-4 days and then just completely go back to being terrible. Before using Differin, I just had CC's and extremely mild acne. Now, I'm left with this horrible, angry acne ALL over my chin and jawline, and I NEVER used to get it there. It has not stopped in this 16 weeks, and I have just about had enough. It isn't for me.

I know it's an old video but i'm gonna comment anyway just in case it helps anyone. When you first start adaplene, you definitely dont start using it every day. A good method to ease in is: once a week for the first month, twice a week for the second month, 3 times a week for the third month, etc. And you don't need to bump up to daily use. I personally stay at 3 times a week because my skin never got used to more than that. When you start using daily, your skin gets too irritated. And your skin barrier will get too damaged. With a severely damaged skin barrier, you will never get used to the product no matter how long you use it. So please please start slowly.

And believe me I did research about the amount to use and how often should you use when starting out and purging period and everything. But believe me what I experienced was not purging. I started break out in cystic acne all over my face even where I had never had acne before and they are 90% pustules. Really painful and I lost all my confidence and didn’t want to leave the house. I used it over three months but it got worse and worse. I didn’t experienced and burn just purely terrible breakout that left scar and red marks all over my face. I wish the product worked on me but unfortunately I might be that 1% of people.

Thank you for sharing this post. My son was experiencing typical mild to moderate teenage acne. Upon the recommendation of a dermatologist and all of the rave reviews he decided to give Differin gel a try. He followed the directions per the dermatologist and began very slowly: first a patch trial, slowly worked to every other day and finally once daily at night. Yes, he did all the moisturizer and sunscreen recommendations. By week two - four the "purge" was in full bloom. A bit alarming but everything you read assures you that the purge stage will last for a week or two. By week six his face was VERY inflamed, red, purple, bumpy and his acne was 10 times worse than anything he had ever experienced. By week 8 his face was unrecognizable and we were finally able to get an appointment with the dermatologist. The doctor immediately wanted to put my son on Accutane (or at minimal Doxycycline) and he wanted my son to continue Differin Gel. The dermatologist was not interested in the fact that my son NEVER suffered from hyperpigmentation or scarring prior to Differin gel. The doctor did not want to address the negative reaction to the Differin Gel.
As the dermatologist directed my son continued Differin for two more weeks for a total of 10 weeks. By week 10 his face was suffering from such breakouts, hyperpigmentation and scarring he had to stop. (A child even asked him if he had been stung by bees.) Again, everything you read or watch online assures you the purge phase will last 2 weeks and it will get worse before it gets better. However, if it gets worse and worse and worse the recommendation is to continue. It is hard to know what to do once you've started this treatment. Prior to Differin, my son NEVER had one acne scar or any hyperpigmentation. We are very worried that this product has left his face permanently scarred. There are other people who have suffered similar side effects but due to the rave reviews it is hard to find those with negative experiences. We just want others to know what to expect. The purge cycle can be VERY harsh and last for months; even if you only have mild to moderate acne.
Please do not tell us how we used the product wrong. We followed all dermatologist directions carefully.

THANK YOU! I'm so sorry to hear about the experience your son went through...it's almost like no one believes you or they refuse to believe Differin was the cause of the reaction. If you've read the other comments on this video, everyone is so quick to defend Differin and blame me for using it wrong... clearly they have never been through a similar experience or had their acne flare up 100X worse than normal for 10 weeks!! It was more than just a purge. It was pain, discoloration, scars, bumps...since stopping Differin, I'm still dealing with acne scars from the purge but I have been doing a lot of research and trying to use quality products that won't make my face flare up in order to work properly. I hope your son is doing better! I can't imagine going through that while being a teenager.

I just want you to know I had a miserable experience with it just like this. He is not alone. My dermatologist (my mom basically dragged me to them after the acne and chemical burns caused by the gel from using it for 4 days did not start to heal after 2 months ) also tried to put me on accutane and would not listen to the fact that this was a direct result of differin gel and I had not developed more acne after stopping differin-it simply was not healing from when I used it. It ended up not healing for years. I was 18 back in July of 2017 when it destroyed my face and ruined my college experience and I hate to say that my mental health went so low, I stopped leaving the house and isolated myself and truly I’m lucky to be alive at this point. I still have 2acne marks left from when I used differing after over 4 years and I still have rosacea symptoms /sensitive skin that suddenly developed after my face was seriously damaged.

Differin will take up 3 months of continuous treatment to see results. There will be a time period which is called “the purge” where your acne comes to the surface. Your skin is peeling or burning because you aren’t using it right. You need to use a good hydrator & moisturizer and use SUNSCREEN. You guys, if you experience purging, you NEED to add an antibacterial/antiinflammatory ingredient: best is an antibiotic!! (should be given/prescribed by a doctor), second best are benzoyl peroxide to kill the bacteria, azelaic acid to kill the bacteria/inflammation, zinc to kill the bacteria/inflammation or niacin or obviously use a salicylic acid wash.

Not sure what the routine was with Differin but even tho over the counter, it’s a strong retinoid. No other acne washes or treatments should be used with it. Only gentle cleanser morning and night. And a good simple moisturizer and then a sunscreen in morning. Also, should slowly ramp up use. Ever few days once a day as skin will get irritated otherwise as it is a retinoid. Then as skin adjusts, you start using more frequently. Then when that is tolerated, you can maybe use twice a day.
Definitely not challenging your experience but I am assuming that maybe it wasn’t used in this way. I would watch dermatologists on UA-cam and/or Google and you will see this is how to get results.

Don't be scared! Just do your research and follow the directions. Start by using it 1-2 times a week and only a small amount. I always used a small amount but I started using it everyday right away which wasn't good.

Mine took over 2 years for the acne marks to fully heal - and I still have 2 left from this experience 4 and a half years later. I’m sure I’m a rare case because I ended up having some chemical burns from it. I only used it for 4 days but it was the most agonizing experience that literally ruined my face.

Sounds like a lot of people who experience burning have bad skin barriers and need to take care of that damaged skin barrier before using differin. If a product burns going on don’t use it you have another issue to handle first . Also sensitive skin people need to do every third night for a month than every other day on month two than evey day month three .. but there are those people out there whose acne does get worse ! Also the sandwich method will help and work wonders .. don’t use a moisturizer that has hyluronic acid in it it will make differin penetrate deeper ! Only use a moisturizer cream based that has niacinamide to help repair skin Barrier ! In the morning keep your face wash simple and hydrating with ceramides ! This face wash for the morning should include huluronic acid . Don’t you any other acne fighting ingredients in the morning ! Keep it simple . Focus on hydration and skin barrier in the morning . Also maybe use differin at night ! Don’t tone after using differing it’s nothing needed ! Wish everyone the best of luck !

I recommend you to make your skin care routine simple. No fancy cleanser or moisturizer with watermelon extracts or anything. I use Vanicream gentle cleanser and La roche posay toleriane ultra night cream. They're both good for sensitive skin.
I'd say I saw visible results on my skin on 3rd month. Months before that were pure purge period. I didn't stop because I was really into clearing my skin. But now my skin is clear, only remains of PIH and some scars but yeah it's clear. Please don't stop using it 🤞
