I’m 51. I’ve used Retin-A since I was 22, 29 YEARS! At first, it was for intractable acne. I haven’t had acne for 21 years, but I still use it every night. People think I’m 38-41. My skin is plump, soft, & wrinkle-free.
I’ve been using it for 2 months. The progress is slow, but it’s worth it. Have patience and you’ll thank yourself later :) I’m now just seeing the changes
I’m 40. Used Tretinoin since I’ve been 24 yo. Spf as well!!! I have zero wrinkles, texture, zero procedures, never had tox or injectables. I love tretinoin. Now I layer with HQ!
Started getting serious with tretinoin since September last year and I regret not starting earlier. Could have saved a lot of money. I still have acne now but my skin is definitely better overall.
@@jessaXDDuring the first three months, I used the Acnecare 0.025% tretinoin. I'm using the Acretin 0.05% tretinoin now, but I'm planning to bump up strength na.
True. I used to spend big bucks on skincare only to see zero improvements. Recently I cleared out my vanity all I could see was.... I was deceived by capitalism big time. 😅. Less is more. My skin is not anywhere near perfect but better thn when I had used all those junks. 😅

Also , I apply it to damp skin and if it feels like too much I pat my face with a dry cloth. Hope this helps
i’m an avid abbey watcher as well as doctorly and i have to say she is very transparent with her routine and her journey. she uses a combination of tretinoin and spironolactone which has helped with her acne. she says treat does the heavy lifting but she also discusses other treatments that she’s found helpful including salicylic acid, hypochlorus acid spray, copper peptides, red light therapy, serums, and she really goes into depth and is very transparent about what she puts on her face. but she chalks up most of her success with her skin to tretinoin doing the heavy lifting. she also has quite a few videos on how to start tretinoin and avoid irritation. i love abbey!!!
@@leah38521but tretinoin turns into retinoic acid, retinoic acid is too harsh on the skin that’s why is not recommended for everyone, I’m pretty sure dermatologists only prescribe it in very rare occassions. That’s why other retinols like tretinoin are recommended, skin handle them so much better
To all those who say they had eye irritation, please know that all topical medicines will migrate a few millimeters depending on how much was applied. Use a barrier cream as well, perhaps Vaseline. That should help.
I get that, but what if we want to prevent wrinkles and fine lines on the eyelids, crow's feet, and under the eyes? I'm 24 and want to prevent my whole face from anti-aging
I started using Tretinoin about 19 months a ago and saw a big difference with texture and age spots. I now am going in for microneedling and together, I apply a topical vitamin C every morning and see a big difference in texture and pore size. This combo seems to be working for me. Pricey, but I am 75 and am trying my best to look a little better. I also apply tretinoin on my hands for age spots and that has made a huge difference as well. Now, my neck is another story all together, but I’m afraid of a lift and really don’t want to spend the money on that anyway.
@@amybowman9906 I noticed a difference in a couple of months, but the lightening of the sun spots on my hands was even quicker. Some are very stubborn, so I still have some of them, but they aren’t real dark any longer. Also, make sure your skin is really dry after washing it. From what I understand it works much better if you don’t apply it while your skin is still damp. I have been a gardener for over 40 years and am mad at myself for not applying sunscreen every day. It really makes a difference. Maybe you should ask your dermatologist if he would recommend a stronger percent. I use 0.1%. Hang in there!

I discovered I should be using at retinoid from actually Dr Dray, another channel I love as much as this one; I started using adapalene initially, which then in Canada we still needed a prescription for. I didn't have acne, I was using it solely for antiaging purposes. I also never used to wear sunscreen so I learned a bit later in life that I SHOULD be every single day, even indoors. I started my journey of daily sunscreen and adapalene in 2020 and I have had SUCH a huge improvement in my skin; texture, pigmentation, evenness, plumpness... people always think I'm 10 years younger than I am. I finally started TRETINOIN 2 months ago and I'm just stoked for what the future holds! Also over the last couple of years I've discovered and started using other actives like niacinamide, vitamin c, azelaic acid etc - learning so much from you guys and Dr Dray as well. ❤
Informative video, however, I have a question. How long is Trentinoin active? Read four hours on the internet. Maybe reapply after that time if your skin is not sensitive? Also, is pharmaceutical Retin A the same as Trentinoin? And what is the difference?
I can second this. I have history of severe cystic acne, post acne hyperpigmentation and scars. The only thing that worked topically for me is Tretinoin, by the grace of Allah my skin even tolerated 0.1%. It also renewed my uneven skin tone, improved texture and also healed some of my scars. I used it with oral Spirinolactone. ❤ الحمد الله
I have sensitive skin (lots of drugstore products inflame my skin) but pure tretinoin from a dermatologist has surprisingly never been a problem for me,
Me neither. I’ve always tolerated it well (way better than adapalene surprisingly) & I have rosacea and super sensitive skin. And if I can use it-even without moisturizer in summer-every single night without irritation, most anybody can. I’ve never even had flakiness or redness from it, even around eyes, lips etc. I think there’s a lot of fear mongering on the internet around the possible irritation it can cause that is largely overblown. (Sure it’s great to be aware of potential for redness etc. but people treat it like looking at a drop of it will fry your skin off or something.) I am convinced that most irritation people experience is trying to use other exfoliants etc at the same time & overdoing it. I am pretty sure it not actually tretinoin itself that is causing those issues a lot of the time. I always, always wait the full 30 min after washing to apply it tho, so maybe that could be a factor?
@@aurora6763 dermatica they do a cheap first month so you can try it out. Also tried skin and me which was fine. I am 71 years old with eczema, rosecea, and very sensitive and fair skin. I have used Tretinoin Rx Cream for over 20 years. I sandwich the Tretinoin between a serum and moisturizer to avoid the extreme dryness. The Tretinoin has markedly decreased the erythema (redness) from the rosacea. I do not have fine lines around my lips, nor crows feet. I was never a sun bather. I did have microchanneling done to remove the papules from rosacea on my nose, but the Tretinoin has kept my skin smooth. I still have slight redness on my cheeks, but just add a little blush and I am good to go. I also use Tretinoin on my neck and do not have a saggy neck, yet.
As someone with rosacea and fair and sensitive skin, this is very encouraging to hear. There are also newer retin-a formulations out now that are better tolerated by sensitive skins, and retinaldehydes are a good place to start since they're less sensitizing and almost as effective. I'm getting some laser treatments currently so waiting to be done with those before I start retin-a.
If you feel like the cream formulation always causes breakouts, try the gel version before quitting! This was my case. I was on the cream for a whole year and never felt like my skin stayed clear or consistent. It was really depressing trying to be consistent while the breakouts always came back. I have zero breakouts on the gel formulation and I regret trying it sooner. I have combo, acne prone skin.
I have been using retinA for close to thirty years now. I know I didn’t do it the right way. I just got the highest dose and went at it every night. My skin did pealed a lot. But to me that was my reward. That was what I wanted to see. My husband is a cardiologist and I just asked him to get it from hospital pharmacy. My skin does look like Aby. I can’t se my pores. NO dark spots. And I get compliments every place I go. Love retinA!!!
No side effects at all other than the expected peeling which I like to see. I had my two kids when started using it. If you are planing pregnancy then i suggest stoping using it.
I started using Tretenoin in 2019 for acne. It works! My Dermatologist said just a pea size for the whole face. After my acne got better, if I get a bump, I now use mostly as a spot treatment. I did not know all of the other benefits. I am going back to pea size application all over my face again. At 49, my face does look youthful, I never realized that this was a contributing factor. Thank you doctors.
a pea size for the whole face!!!?? i've been using a pea size for each cheek, a peasize for the chin and a pea size for the nose. But yes my acne is gone. i guess i should cut back! lol
@GlickTheExplorer I hear you!!!! I said the same thing when my Dermatologist told me that. I tried to do that, but for me, a pea size wasn't quite enough, so I would do little dots randomly over my face and then spread it out, or I just did the spot treatments.
I have very dry skin which made applying Tretinoin difficult. I learned that using a moisturizing toner before did the trick . Without it the Tretinoin would not spread on my dry skin causing me to use too much which led to overly dry peeling skin in am. I am 63 and I still get compliments on my skin I admit I use vit C, peptides and sunscreen daily as well as acids once a week, but the T is THE GOAT! Thanks Guys - learn so much from you both🙏
I'm constantly listening to "not using peptides with retinol/tretinoin". Maybe it's just about copper peptides, that's why I'd like to ask you what peptides and Vitamin C have you been using? Well, maybe a whole routine?! 😂 Anyways, thank you in advance.
@@DoraSometimesI have dry skin. I use a Vit C plus e plus ferulic acid serum (Timeless) each morning, After 15 minutes I put on a peptide moisturizer (Acure whipped night cream) and after 20 minutes my sunscreen. At night I use The Ordinary Buffet plus Copper Peptide serum, after it fully dries my tretinoin 0.05, then after that has absorbed CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream.
I’m going on 2 1/2 years on tretinoin 1%. I use it every single night, and will never ever miss a night, and never stop using it. It has completely transformed my skin for the better. I’m 49 and my skin has never looked better, not even in my teens or 20’s. 🙏🏼

@@baghaga1138 That’s exciting! How old are you? Make sure to lock it in and use it for the rest of your life. Retinoids are the best anti aging ingredient. There is no “best” product. The best product is the one you will actually use and afford. CeraVe is good, Neutrogena is good- ROC, Avene. Doesn’t matter the brand. But you need to decide if you want a retinol moisturizer or serum. A retinol moisturizer is a one-product routine and quick. Just apply it at night and you’re done ✅- that’s it. A retinol serum will require a moisturizer afterward. If you don’t want two steps then get a retinol cream and not a serum. Tips: Start slow. Watch for stinging and irritation. Make sure you’re always moisturizing to prevent dryness and redness. Stop using retinol for 2 days if you notice irritation then resume. Use sun protection during the day. Use retinol at minimum 3x per week and work your way up to nightly use. This post is discussing prescription Tretinoin though which isn’t over the counter. If you aren’t able to get this then retinol over the counter is still find and gives the same benefits long term. Plus, Tretinoin is STRONG and starting off with retinol is a smarter approach anyways. So use retinol for about a year or two and eventually graduate to Tret.
@andiidavis I feel you on this. I took accutane for 2 rounds, used tretinoin and turns out, I just have an hormonal imbalance. Did not find out until we were trying to concieve. A side effect is acne. See a OBGYN!
I am 3.5 years in with Tretinoin .05% 5 nights a week, lactic acid 10% the other two. My skin is amazing, I actually go out without foundation and I have had two small breakouts in as many years. 9 yrs of tretinoin, my advice is start slowly with .25 and don’t give up! I’m now doing .1 every night and my skin is close to perfect. Of course a little Botox to help isn’t a bad idea!

I've been using tretinoin for over 8 years and oh man! I stopped for a few years after to give my skin a break and it's working again because it did stopped but now I'm using it again and loving!
Love the acronym 🐐 but seriously it does work. I started in my 40s and now at 61 (over two decades later), I’m seeing the difference compared to ppl my age. No pores, firm smooth skin texture, zero wrinkles, no blemishes etc and just overall youthful appearance. This was the only product I’ve ever used with no morning or night routines other then a cheap day moisturizer & occasional sunscreen.

Retin A never removed any wrinkles or age spots, it just prevented any from forming in the first place. I started using Retin A for acne in my thirties, I read it could help prevent wrinkles. I am almost 55, and my skin hasn't changed since my thirties. I also gave added to my routine hyaluronic acid, Vitamin C and A creams, peptides, ceramides, Dr. Pen, Jessner's peels and TCA peels.
I was doing amazingly on adapalene nightly for acne for three years, until I started a prescription medication for something else in April, and the acne I had under control came back with a vengeance. I start tretinoin .025 tonight. I'm 40 so it's probably time anyway, but I still think Adapalene is an excellent choice for anyone who can't afford to see a derm.

I’ve been using tretinoin for almost 4 years now, and I have nothing but positive results. With all respect to those benefiting from Tretinoin, my face hates it! I gave it so many chances over the past several years (my 30s) & my face reacts the same. I use it to even out my skin & anti-age but it gives me non-stop cystic acne (not purging) which horribly ruins my skin & prevents me from using any other actives. When I stop it my skin clears up on its own, becomes brighter & healthier etc with no breakouts.

I’ve heard so much about Tretinoin but, always from US skincare influencers and dermatologists. Being located in Germany, Tretinoin does not seem to be a thing here. At least, I haven’t heard about it on any accounts. I wonder why this seems to be the case? Here, it appears to be advertised solely as an acne treatment and not as an anti-aging ingredient. I will ask my dermatologist at my next appointment and I am so curious what she’ll tell me! Great video btw :) thanks a lot!
I suspect that it’s downplayed in countries with public healthcare, as they don’t want to encourage people to seek out a prescription for purely cosmetic reasons. I just cannot imagine getting a referral to a dermatologist because you want to slow down skin ageing, let alone the dermatologist actually prescribing for that purpose, but I might be wrong. Luckily, there are online dermatology services who will privately prescribe it for basically any reason, though, and they’re reasonably affordable compared to other skincare products you can buy over the counter, so it’s not too bad.
Yeah it's not that popular here in Germany and my dermatologist was a little hesitant about prescribing it to me. I happened to have a few pimples at the time so in the end I got it prescribed as acne medication and my insurance paid for it. I use the Cordes VAS cream.

I really liked the explanation of why a product with the extra ingredients as well as the retinol can be a little more advantageous. I’ve taken retin A for 40 years now. I remember being in high school and I purposely tried to get as much sun because it reduced my acne (by burning my skin!). I think it’s always worth mentioning the emotional toll dealing with acne can take. At least now maybe my skin is “better” now because of my early anti-aging! Lastly, you guys are both soo handsome!!! (Who says keyboard courage is always bad!)
My aunt had acne, and way back when, sunlamps were the treatment, and for her, that resulted in skin cancer. I also had a good friend when I was younger who had really bad acne, and later all the scars. My heart broke for her. She was the reason I started using Tretinoin, she gave me a tube of her lower strength when she moved up to a higher one. I didn’t use it long because there wasn’t a lot of info out there back then about starting slow, or using moisturizer too -and I just couldn’t deal with the peeling. When I started up again in my early 50s, I did it right and the results have been amazing.
I have suffered with acne most of my life and I am in my 30s. I went to a dermatologist and he suggested me using tretinoin. I didn't use it regularly and was still suffering with acne. I think its the only skincare I will use forever.
I have not had a day without peeling skin since I started Tretinoin 2 years ago. I didn't know I had sensitive skin! I think it's important to note that Abby uses Agency, not the stuff you get in the tube from the Dermatologist. It seems to be less irritating. If it is in your budget it is the way to go. Also, Abby's channel is mostly a hair care channel now. Her older videos are fantastic for skincare however. She also swears by Copper Peptides.
Have you tried slugging? I slug every night and since starting Tret months ago (first 0.025, now 0.05), I've probably had maybe a dozen peeling days. The only places I've ever peeled is around my nose and corners of my mouth. I even use it under my eyes and haven't had any issues.
@@traceytrotter9934 I love Nivea creme and the way it smells. ❤️ I use Nivea creme, CeraVe ointment, Aquaphor ointment, lanolin, Egyptian Magic, or Vaseline. They all have different benefits and I have a hard time deciding, so a lot of times I use a mix of all of them. (Mix them in a little jar that I keep in my bathroom fridge, because that area of the house stays really hot in the summer. I know this is a no-no, but I've been mixing like this for years and never had any issues.) The CeraVe in the tub made me break out, so I use the CeraVe ointment cautiously (since they both have the ceramics).
@@kirankrishna550 I've used every strength and just adjust how I use it for the potency. For example, at the higher strengths I will 'sandwich' it by putting on a serum then night cream, allow to soak in then apply tret, then sandwich with more night cream or Nivea cream.

Great and very useful video! I used tablets for a few months 3-4 years ago due to issues with rocasea and it really helped. But my skin got so dry that I had to drench it not to be completely miserable. I would think that would be a lesser issue with a cream, but I can see Abbey uses a lot of moisture on her skin, so I guess the effect is still there. She looks great :)
Hey Doctorly, I have been facing a problem with "Sweaty face" (Facial Hyperhidrosis) which even makes it worse when I have an oily skin. It just melts down all your skincare products and specially sunscreen when am outside. Will be great if you can guide us to the solution. THANK YOU
I think what they said about using tretinoin PLUS another product is so important! I had really bad acne for years, and my skin is also sensitive. My doctor prescribed tretinoin to me starting at a very low concentration (0.001%. Yes, two zeros before the one!) and I slowly worked up to a 0.05%. Even then, I was still struggling with new breakouts and the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that was coming with them. Only after my doctor prescribed a clindamyin + benzoyl peroxide treatment IN ADDITION to my tretinoin did my acne clear up. Yes, it was a journey, but I cannot tell you how worth it it was. What I want you to take from this is that “ideal” skin is different for everyone, and it takes a journey to get to it. Try not to get discouraged as you go through ups and downs trying to treat your unique skin condition. You are beautiful and worthy through every phase of your skincare journey; trust that you will get there eventually❤️
I have been using tretinoin for several years now. I'm turning 50 yrs old this year and I been getting compliments on how good my skin looks. I don't even use foundation either.
Tret is a drug and it can cause medical side effects including dry eye. It can cause other opthalmic conditions as well such as ocular floaters, double vision and other pseudo tumor cerebri symptoms. It's VERY rare but it can happen and it is important to get checked out if you are experiencing unrelenting headaches or eye disturbances. Just throwing this out there in case anyones been experiencing symptoms they dont understand.
It's unrealistic to expect everyone's skin to look as good as Abby's after using Tretinoin. I have been using it for over 7 years myself, but still experience regular breakouts due to hormonal issues. Winlevi has been a lifesaver for managing my hormonal acne, but at $600, it's not affordable for me since my insurance won't cover it. I've also been using the Qure led mask for a few months, but haven't seen any noticeable improvements in my skin. Tretinoin is great, but it's important to manage our expectations based on our overall health history.
Use Good RX if your insurance won't cover it! If you are using it for acne, it should be considered essential. As long as you aren't telling them you are using it for cosmetic reasons such as wrinkles
@@TA-np4mc Unfortunately they still denied it saying its unnecessary even though it was stated by my doctor I can't take oral meds for hormonal acne like Spironolactone due to allergy. With GoodRx I still have to pay $570 for it because the retail price is $694 😭

Aren't crows feet from squinting, muscle movement?
Congratulations! I wish I have the same results!
If you feel like the cream formulation always causes breakouts, try the gel version before quitting! This was my case.
No pores, firm smooth skin texture, zero wrinkles, no blemishes etc and just overall youthful appearance. This was the only product I’ve ever used with no morning or night routines other then a cheap day moisturizer & occasional sunscreen.
I’ve used tret for 17 years now. I’m 38 and just had the store manager called on me when I tried to purchase a bottle of wine bc they refused to believe my ID was legitimate. I love it.

I started using ratin A 0.05 two days ago and I hope not to see side effects and works well
Dr Shah, I saw you in a cerave commercial😊 !! Congratulation👏👏👏👏👏

You should use BHA also. It helps with acnes.
I’ve been using tretinoin for almost 4 years now, and I have nothing but positive results. Yes you will have the peeling and possible acne flare out for like the first 6-8 months, but after that it’s smooth sailing. Of course there is the occasional peeling, but it’s just proof that it’s working. I love it, I’ll use it forever! ❤️❤️❤️

The visible improvements you can expect are from textured, tone of your skin, evenness, discoloration, and overall glow of your skin. So i don’t know what your expectations are so I can’t really say.

Maybe you’re allergic to it?
Tretinoin is stronger, may be use lower concentration retinol

I’ve been using Tretinoin for around four years. It really works for anti-aging! I had to start slow because it used to irritate my skin even at low dosages, but now I’ve built up tolerance to where I put 0.1% strength Tretinoin on wet skin every night and am perfectly fine.
If you have a moment, I just wanted to ask about my wife's use of tretinoin, which the doctor prescribed for the health of her skin. I developed 2 carcinomas, squamous and basal, on my nose 3 years ago. I left them alone and they remained the same size. Last year I started using an otc retinol product on my face and discovered that they both were shrinking. When I stopped using the cream they began to grow again. I've just got a prescription from my lovely doc for tretinoin. With both parents and a brother having skin cancer that metastasised I'm very very grateful for tretinoin. I was just going to use it for the carcinoma, but after hearing what you have to say, I'm going whole face😊

Here in Brazil tretinoin is over the counter from 0.025% up to 0.1%. I have been using for about 4 years, I started using the 0.025% one and slowly moved to a higher porcentage. I've been using 0.1% for a year now, I love it sooooo much, it changed my life, my skin is not sensitive, it can take a lot, so to me it really works. Ps.: I started using when I was 25, now I'm 29!

I live in the U.K. and I get my tretinoin through Skin & Me, and Dermatica. Perhaps these are available in Germany too?
I suspect that it’s downplayed in countries with public healthcare, as they don’t want to encourage people to seek out a prescription for purely cosmetic reasons. I just cannot imagine getting a referral to a dermatologist because you want to slow down skin ageing, let alone the dermatologist actually prescribing for that purpose, but I might be wrong. Luckily, there are online dermatology services who will privately prescribe it for basically any reason, though, and they’re reasonably affordable compared to other skincare products you can buy over the counter, so it’s not too bad.
I get it here in Australia by prescription from my regular doctor. No need for a dermatologist.
@@katehobbs2008 For wrinkles…? Seriously? Ours would only give it out for free if you had acne!

I’m on my second week of Tretenoin and wow! What a change
How often did you use it and what percentage? What brand did you use? Thanks :)
It wasn't the sunburn, it was the vitamin D.
Then my GP told me you need to use it regularly to see results. Now its been 2 yrs that I have been using and I see the difference. In the first year there was a lot of purging that I thought this isn't working for me but nevertheless I still continued and I am thankful that I didn't give up.
Did you use it everyday?

I've also been using the Qure led mask for a few months, but haven't seen any noticeable improvements in my skin. Tretinoin is great, but it's important to manage our expectations based on our overall health history.
