BMW i4 M50 Range & Charging test v Tesla Model 3 Performance & Porsche Taycan 4S in cold weather!

  • The only real way to compare real world range, efficiency and charging is to test side-by-side in convoy on the same day at the same time!
    And that's exactly what we do here! It's a cold day and that will affect both efficiency and charging speed but how will the new BMW i4 M50 compare to two potential rivals (and if not rivals, at least efficiency and charging kings!).
    The Taycan is not the most efficient car but it can recharge at 270 kw and add 50% in 11 minutes which is incredible. But will it be affected by the cold weather today?
    #ev #convoycomparison #bmwi4m50
    The Tesla is efficiency king! Always very efficient but does that make up for what is sometimes slower charging speeds. It can preheat for charging to maximise its chances of taking a faster charge speed but at the detriment of efficiency.
    Will the i4 be able to compete?
    Plus along the way I can share some more of my thoughts on the i4 and hoe it compares to the Porsche and Tesla.
    Have you ordered one? I actually HAVE! But will I keep that order...?
    Thanks for watching!

      You can't be serious right? He's not charging all the cars to 100%. Can't really take that serious as a max range test. The 3D graphs don't add anything, except look flashy, but they're worse for readability. And the calculations don't match up either. Somehow the Model 3P gets 243 miles without preheat, but 218 with preheat, and somehow both numbers add up to 391km...

    Thanks for another great video! I really appreciate these real world head to head comparisons. And your analysis of charge speed and range, etc quite useful. What i will say is that each car has various other attributes that you didnt have time to cover in this video. So i can see a person having good reason to favour one of the three for their own use. Great work, this was very informative and non-biased video and I really liked that you didn't make this as a "Is this a Tesla killer" or " Is this better than Tesla" analysis video. So many videos like that out there and I don't get it, why so many need to find a Tesla killer. Tesla is a great car and I don't think there is going to be a single car that will be a Tesla killer, but since every car brand in the world is releasing EVs these days Tesla will surely loose some potential customers to other brands but they will still be there. I was choosing between Polestar2, Tesla 3 LR and BMW i4M50 I finally choose the BMW since my wife and son thought the BMW was the best looking out of the three 😀 cheers

    • @updlate4756
      @updlate4756 2 роки тому +11

      He didn't mention the optional wheel / tire / brake / spoiler package he has on the i4 m50 that reduces the estimated range by 43 miles (EPA). It may not be intentionally biased, but it's certainly misleading. The base i4 M50 tire package still has wider tires than the model 3P, but would have resulted in much closer range.

    • @user-lp5ww5bt7w
      @user-lp5ww5bt7w 2 роки тому +6

      @@updlate4756 I think it is fair as both model 3 and the Taycan are having their performance trim and wheels as well. Well you can see the BMW, even having the performance wheel / tyres, still losing traction when accelerating hard, but not for Model 3 and Taycan. It would be even worse if the standard tyres are used on the BMW and just spoil the point for choosing the top performance model.

    • @updlate4756
      @updlate4756 2 роки тому +8

      @@user-lp5ww5bt7w That's the only wheel/tire set that the model 3P comes with, and frankly, it isn't exactly up to snuff for track. The BMW's package is, but it destroys daily driving efficiency. Therein lies the biggest problem. For someone who wants a performance car with solid range AND handling, the base BMW tire and wheel set is the way to go.
      The problem in this video is that the viewer is never told that the BMW has this option on and what it does to the vehicle's range. Hell, I didn't even know until I went to the i4 50's configurator.
      High performance tires are slippery in colder temperatures due to the rubber they use. In warm temps, they're pliable and sticky. In winter, they harden to something similar to plastic and become slippery. So there's no surprise there's wheel spin. That's why you should never use summer tires in the winter. The standard tires have the option to select all seasons. There's only one performance tire option.

    Hi,
    Very good video!!!
    I liked a lot, that you also added the cost, even if charging at home is less expensive, as it gives a good idea of the cost for long travel.
    Even so and as you pointed out, being that cost high, one does not need to do rapid charging for daily commutes, therefore the running costs of an EV will be lower than an ICE Car.
    Nevertheless the above and for a next time, would it be possible to also give the data, comparing the actual energy spent on the trip, versus the actual energy charged (charging loses)?
    I would say, that besides the efficiency of driving the car, charging loses for each different car, can affect the actual running costs.
    I'm quite interested in such, as I see that in average, my EV (Mini Cooper SE) in winter (Norway), has been having an average charging loss slightly above 20% (that I don't know if it's high or low, as usually such data is not provided in these kind of independent tests). Just a curious fact around the charging loss, is that it looks that the slower one charges, the higher is the charging loss.
    Thanks!!!

Next up is how they stand up longer term but I don't suppose we can FFWD 10-15 years and compare again ?😁 For that reason, and a few others inc build and interior quality, my preference would be the i4 or if had 50k more to spend, the Taycan. I'm still not convinced by Tesla's reliability long term & longevity yet but this is just a hunch. As you said, all good cars and that Mod 3 has really good efficiency - Tesla definitely ahead in some key areas (+ the charging network). Weight is key!

However (again based on the numbers on the BMW website) 18" wheels would only give 1 mile better range than the 19's ! But who's going to put 18" wheels on that car anyway ! ;-)

    HI Richard, Tesla Bjorn is reporting this new snow mode and in it he explains how the new traction and stability control changes the characteristics. I'm wondering if this invalidates all previous tests and comparisons. Anyway, in benign conditions and temps above zero C the traction control wouldn't engaged and the Model 3 is essentially RWD only. An apples comparison would then be with the Taycan in Range Mode where it reportedly uses FWD only or maybe with the Taycan RWD. The BMW has two PM motors and permanent AWD so wouldn't be a fair comparison. To ensure the Model 3 isn't disadvantaged, do not set the destination charger in the nav system to ensure pre-conditioning is not turned on. This would be a fair comparison.

    Easily the best EV reviews on UA-cam. The real world comparisons cannot be beaten. I am disappointed in the BMWs efficiency and charge speeds vs the others, especially as I have an iX on order. Other owners of BMW EVs getting similar Wh/mi as this video. I really hope (but doubt) a software update will improve things.

    I have an M3P and love the silence. I can't understand why you might want the noise. In the good old days the noise helped you change gears. Now you don't need to. I'd rather the music, or silence. If you want to hear noise, play V10 F1 sounds on the stereo!

    I love to see tests like this Richard, and you did a great job. Just a few things I would like you to address though. First of, why didn't you use preheating of the battery in the Taycan? Probably the reason why it didn't get into the high charge rates. I've done several charge sessions in temperatures far colder, and still achieved great charge rates. So it's absolutely possible, even when it's very cold outside. And that narrows that gap on long journeys vs. the Model 3. You need to stop earlier, but you charge quite a bit faster, and should make up the time lost on charging, and get there quicker. That's of course only viable if you need at least one charge stop on route to your destination.
    And the second bit was the bit about the acceleration differences. Now, the Taycan behaves very differently depending on the mode your in. You do of course know this, but the viewers might not. In Normal, the car will use second gear even from start, but if you do floor it, it will shift down and go. That will feel like a big delay, if you're used to the Tesla. However, if you're in SportPlus, that's not the case. It will use the first gear when you're driving slower, and second once you get up to speed. And it will not downshift when you floor it. At least that's how my Taycan turbo behaves. But I should think the 4S behaves similarly. And for that very reason I've setup my Individual program to function like a Normal mode, but with the Sport parameters for the drivetrain. So nice soft suspension, normal ride hight, regen on, electronic sports sound on and nice sporty throttle respons. I could base it of off the SportPlus program, but that has some disadvantages that will burn more energy. The cooling flaps in the front, will be open at all times while in SportPlus, and that might be nice for the battery, while you track the car and push it hard, but it will not be nice for the consumption to get less optimal airflow. And the wing will pop up when you get over 95km/h. Which looks cool, and helps with high speed cornering, but for longer journeys, it's not what you want.
    Oh, and I agree with you on the sound bit of the i4. I've not test driven the car yet, so I might react differently when I do, but I don't like the fact that the sound has a sound signature of something accelerating slowly. It's like an engine reving slowly. It just is a total mismatch with the speed. It sounds like you're doing 0-20mph in 10 seconds.

    • @robinhunter4501
      @robinhunter4501 2 роки тому +2

      You could flip that round - there wasn't the need to manually tell the car to preheat the battery in the Tesla as it knew a SuperCharger was part of the journey so sorted itself out automatically.

    • @tronderikbrekke8792
      @tronderikbrekke8792 2 роки тому +1

      @@robinhunter4501 The Taycan does that as well. However if Richard decided to stop at another charge station, and not tell the car, it couldn't know. So you must either let the car decide where to stop, or add your own charge stops if you want to swap the ones the car picks for your own. It's actually quite identical to that of the Tesla. Sometimes you don't want to stop where the car wants, and add where ever you want to go instead. Drawback has been for the longest of times, you then had to plan your route one stop at a time. But I think there's been some updates adding the function to add stops to your trip.
      But my point is both cars does that part identical. So it's odd to say that the Taycan didn't preheat, without mentioning why. Since it do preheat if you use it correctly. And thus, it would have charged quite a bit faster. Mind you the Model 3 did preheat, and still didn't charge optimal.

    It just seems to me we throw all of the criteria we used to have for comparing cars out of the window when assessing EVs. I know people are concerned about range, charging speeds and efficiency but at some point, we'll need to get away from that and talk about them as cars and how they feel. There's some of that here but still a lot of numbers which don't tell the whole story.
    What are customers considering the Porsche Taycan and BMW i4 looking for in these vehicles? Is it all-out efficiency or something else? And what are they cross shopping? I'm inclined to believe that if it is a Tesla, it's the S, not the 3. Maybe with the i4 the 3 might be considered, but probably not the 3 and Taycan.

    The BMW i4 (M50) also has the ability to pre-heat (or cool) the battery so that you can reach thr highest possible charging speeds - to use it plan the charging stops in the car's navigation. My experience shows that it will allow for much faster charging speeds and the cost of range is limited.
