      Not to sure if you have figured out the issue, but I know weisco pistons are known for “sticking” due to their construction. They are an alloy piston not forged, and swell quicker then a standard forged piston does. They require more piston to wall clearance due to this! If not set right they swell to quick and stick to the wall. I have seen this, I have done this lol

  • @billstigliano5700
    @billstigliano5700 2 роки тому +12

    When you measure the ring gap. push the ring down with the piston to get it even in the bore. Also why not check the compression after the rebuild , just to have a baseline number . then do a start and check again. its great to have those numbers to compare if anything goes wrong.

  • @evil14life

    One tip, adjust the idle with the carb slide screw, not the throttle cable. pulling the cable tight to adjust the idle is not the way to do it. The cable is supposed to have a set amount of free play before it begins to lift the carb slide. The free play amount is listed in the service manual. Everything else your doing looks good. I have enjoyed watching your skills grow. Just please set idle on your machines the right way, its driving me crazy, lol.

    Stacking gaskets is the wrong way to do it. I understand testing things but that's where squish comes in. Squish will tell you if you need a thicker gaskets and if you do never stack them. You could have also had the dome cut out alittle in the head. Very common practice in 2 strokes. You've come a long way from before and it's good to see you learning. Keep it up

    i've always been taught on break ins you should upshift and downshift regularly and to not stay in one gear or cruise it, maintaining constant low rpm is kinda bad for anything on break in. kinda like mint low mile grandma cars, as soon as you open them up they start leaking and smoking bad lol a redline a day keeps the mechanic away... my 1975 yz 250 i rebuilt over a few months when i was 15 i ripped every gear until 5th too like half it's rpm in each gear, then i would downshift and allow it to naturally engine brake all the way down to 1st with no brakes its good for the rings and cylinder break in. i did that for about 10 hours, once your ready to let it eat you change the oil and do the same thing but from redline for awhile. it breaks the rings into the full rpm range better. my old yz still runs, a friend of mine owns it and his kid rides it, it chooches like a coal train but it still runs, it was rebuilt 22 years ago. i rode it for 3 years until i got my license then sold it to him for $60.

    • @boogerfromthatmovie4257
      @boogerfromthatmovie4257 2 роки тому

      @Quirin M. no dude was my homeboy it was $60 lol i got it for $100 i was super lucky. best part was it only had like 50 hours on it, the bottom end was brand new the only things wrong with it was the coil was a lemon so they change it and wired it backwards idk how or why but it happened. it sat for so long cuz they couldn't fugure it out the piston was seized to the cylinder so i had it proper honed and slapped new rings in it, reversed the wires and she fired right up lol you could tell they were in the points and mag trying to figure out the spark issue.

  • @MM_in_Havasu
    @MM_in_Havasu 2 роки тому +12

    A loose 0.004" should be sufficient enough clearance, just always remember that the piston will grow more than the cylinder with water-pumper 2-strokes, especially when cold. It sounds about right with the engine running, just the right amount of ringing noise from normal piston slap. Break it in and see how it works out.
    You may want to get a thick soft aluminum gasket made up for the cylinder base and use Yamabond case sealer on it instead of the permatex silicone-based sealer. Measure your existing gasket stack and go from there, sounds good so far!
    37:34-----You fouled a sparkplug, better to replace a plug than a piston! No biggie if you're breaking this engine in easy.
    Thanks for a cool video, glad this thing is finally coming to fruition!

    • @TheHonda300ryder
      @TheHonda300ryder 2 роки тому

      With a standard alloy piston yes, .004” is not an issue. Weisco pistons however are alloy not a forged piston. They swell at a faster rate then the standard pistons, they do require a little more piston to wall clearance to compensate for the faster growing rate of the piston to prevent this. I have stuck a weisco piston like this... :)

      Upon washing the cylinder I wouldn’t have been running my gloved fingers through it. Good way to rescratch things if there was in fact still metal in the cylinder.
      Also measuring the rings…. I would have coated outside of ring with oil befor putting it in the cylinder and pushing it down via your piston.
      These precautions make me wonder why it blew up in ten seconds after the first rebuild!
      Other then that, glad it worked out

    What a relief after all the grief! Congratulations. Interesting comments about which end of the jug to compensate for the too radically modified port timing. Now you know you're on the right track l would like to see a measured port map, get some advice from someone who knows how to read it. Then you will know which end of the jug needs a compression plate (made at a good machine shop) instead of the three gaskets. Also oil mix needs to be a ratio you intend to run with, then plug chops and jetting to suit that ratio. Like others have said start rich on each circuit then come down on the sizes.

      @@RB-pr2lyBoring a cylinder isn't really done for increasing displacement or power. It's a matter of cost. If the cylinder is damaged it must be bored in order bring back a smooth and consistent surface for the rings to seal against. Other options, a replacement cylinder or resleeve, is very expensive. Boring a single cylinder engine doesn't even really create a significant power increase anyway.

    Thanks for the video but I was surprised at the relative lack of measurement accuracy in relation to the piston-to-head clearance and thus the compression ratio, as compared with piston-bore clearance and ring gaps. As you found, gaskets compress and a metal spacer might have been better - thick enough to achieve the desired cyl head capacity and thus compression ratio.

    Did you really adjust the idle speed by adjusting the cable? Please tell me you didn't.
    If you're unsure of jetting buy all the jets several sizes bigger and several spark plugs. Throw a huge one in and feel it big out past 3/4 throttle. Keep dropping one size at a time until it cleans up and revs out past 3/4 throttle. Then do a plug chop, cut the thread off and measure the smoke ring. Keep leaning out from there. Oh and tune your pilot circuit first as that does have a small effect on your WOT mixture.

      Yes he did, adjust the idle at the throttle 🤣

    Instead of soapy water use a tack rag that you use for auto painting, works great!!! Great job.

    I think your right it sounds lean in the top end should not rev out like a 250 or 125 the rings get hot expand and ends but together.

    Get some needle files. That way can take the jet in it bore it out to where is correct.

    You just needed a oversized head gasket but 3 base gaskets will work too I guess I’m just not a fan of stacking gaskets there’s a chance they won’t seal when stacked. And like I said before Suzuki lt500r is a unreliable pos you best sale it before it goes down again because it won’t last long.

    ever get the thrush washers installed in the crank assembly? according to the drawings there should be one on each side of the rod. i didnt see them. tons of slop in that thing.

    Is the carb fully cleaned? Right size pilot etc? Seems harder to start and runs a little more rough than a crisply jetted Zilla.
