Great video, I've had SSD5 for a few years now and was wanting to make the jump to SD3. I've been on the fence though, I've bought all the expansion packs to SSD5 and learned to use it quite well. I have a hard time getting the toms in SSD5 sound the way I want, and was wanting to see what SD3 had to offer. This video makes it even more tougher to decide whether to pull the trigger and get it.

My current setup is to use SSD5 for kick, toms, ride, and snare. And SD3 for hi hat and all crashes. But I sometimes might use SD3 for snare. Regarding Toms, SD3 allows really awesome flexibility for Toms types and tuning them. But unfortunately they just don't have the same type of strength as SSD5. SD3 Toms are very good. Just not as good and realistic as SSD5. If you need any help in a separate way, feel free to shoot me an email anytime to discuss more.

Very detailed sound comparison. I think SSD5 is the winner here. I've used the free version before and it sounded realistic right out of the box. What do you think of the customization (mixer, sample settings) on SD3 vs SSD5?.

SD3 probably wins for customization capabilities. The SD3 mixer is vast, and there are all the awesome ambient tracks for achieving depth to your heart's content. And some cool built-in plugins like the Punch Exciter. SSD5.5 also definitely has amazing customization capabilities too. Both libraries are so impressive in different ways.

great video, is there a different level of what you get with ssd5 free vs the full version currently at $119.00? i notice the free version lacks enough groove options. would the full version have more grooves? thanks

I know the free version only has one or a few kits, where as the paid version has many. I've never used the grooves, but when checking the library right now, I see lots of them available.

Both programs have advantages. SSD is more mix ready, I guess. SD3 is good for natural drum sounds and you have to tweak it more. For additional room sound I use Ocean Way Studio from UAD which is easier for me to get what I want. SSD seems to be more a hard hitter with more room as SD3. The big advantages for SD3 are the grid editor, natural sounds and the included trigger...

I used ssd 5 free for many years. It has only 1 kit. But they say the kits in the fullversion all sound similar and overproduced.
Ez seems pretty awesome but the addictivedrummer is on sale now. And prodrummer is cheap as well but needs so much resources

I've been using the Superior Drummer software going back 8 years, and Sadly I've never tried Steven Slate Drums until recently. Superior Drummer3 has AWFULLY Dreadful Kick drum samples. Now that I'm using Steven Slate Drums, I will never go back. Much better drum samples!

SD3 still wins for its Hi-hat, though. And maybe for its Crashes too, it's a close call. But I agree, SD3's lackluster kicks are what inspired me to purchase SSD5.5 :) Curious - do you have any experience with Get Good Drums, MixWave, Room Sound, or XLN Audio? I haven't tried any of those yet.

I think the Kick Drums are really good, just that Superior Drummer is generally more raw so you have to know how to process it.

I threw the Waves Scheps Omni Channel plug-in on the SD3 kick and it definitely helped me get better sound.
