  • Have you watched Tidying Up with Marie Kondo yet? I wanted to share my thoughts on this Netflix show & the KonMari wave as someone who's been practicing the KonMari method since 2015.
What do you think about minimalism vs. KonMari? Do you lean more towards one end?

Not sure I agree here on the "minimalist" label.
Certainly minimalists can also benefit from the Kon-Mari approach, and the end result typically does results in having less items... * Keep ONLY what brings one Joy* ... and Respect things enough to give them a proper Home, .. but the FOCUS is NOT on "getting RID of" things... but rather DECIDING what we really want to have SURROUNDING us... what is truly important to us. It is a SUBTLE and yet HUGE Difference.
The truth is ... we rarely truly WANT everything in our environment.
I have an old, rusted, too small crock pot... and every time I use it I get frustrated because it is too small for the task. It does NOT 'spark joy' . I am getting rid of it tomorrow. Yes, that does create space... but that is not the initial intention for letting it go... that is simply an added BENEFIT.
The difference between The Kon-Mari method and Minimalism is MINDSET.... Keeping what is valuable to us.... vs ... Getting Rid of ... for the sake of getting rid of.
The former comes from a place of Bounty, while the latter is more about Lack, EVEN if we end up with the same amount of items!
For me, mismatched glass wear, worn out pans, chipped dishes, etc end up creating a chaotic environment. I was holding on to things that were dragging me down. I finally realized that I did not have to feel guilty about letting them go. NOR did I need to feel guilty about keeping things that truly made me happy.
When I first attempted minimalism I thought I had to LET Go of even things I treasured.. . it was difficult to assess ... and so I got bogged down.
Now my criteria is totally different. More Joy... with a home for everything. It has been an amazing shift in ATTITUDE.

I would hope it wouldn’t go that direction since her method isn’t supposed to be about minimizing to just utility. I think the emphasis on holding onto and highlighting things you love will encourage people to recognize that they don’t have to feel guilty for having things they like. Then again, with all the twitter memes I’ve seen, I think a lot of people misinterpret that

i think its possible to be a minimalist and still have a lot of books... or certain clothes or... 'a lot' of something. i agree konmari and minimalism do share many similar values. i think that's the point... you use all these things and get value from them. people always try to push a 'right way' to do things. there will always be a spectrum imo♡ i think if you push too hard in any specific way, you are missing the point....

I totally agree, I think it's actually one of the stereotypes about minimalism. You can have many books or many clothes or many music records, if you value and enjoy each one of them. At the same time if you don't care about makeup for example, you will only have the minimal amount or non at all :)

At first I really thought konmari is about minimizing and just throwing away your stuff but when I watched the show, it became clear that it's actually keeping the things that you value and gives you happiness. If your 50 books spark joy in your life, then by all means, keep them. There was one episode where a couple still kept their christmas stuff and cards collection.

Minimalism is not just about having less, it's about being conscious of what really gives value to your life - and with that I mean joy, use or emotional attachment. There's a scene from the Minimalism documentary in which they state just the same: if you really love your collection of books, hang on to them! Sometimes we forget about the real core of these movements. Of course everyone will use the term they feel the most comfortable using. Just remember that the whole "minimalism aesthetic" and real minimalism don't necessary overlap.

I love the way you explained the difference between Konmari and minimalism. I think they both serve the same purpose, to make your life happier and easier with stuff.
I think what is minimalist varies a lot between cultures (and people). For example, I'm from Finland and many minimalist videos seem just the general Nordic/Scandinavian style for me. And my minimalism would probably look crazy extremism for many people.
But you do you. Everyone has the right to find the style that best suits them regardless of how some others would call it.

The way I see it minimalism is about having the things that actually have a meaning in your life and you're actually using them in everyday life. Yes, minimalism refers to owning as little stuff as POSSIBLE, but it doesn't mean you have to have a very little amount of stuff and I think that's where people get confused/mistaken because it's really just having the things that you really use instead of owning things that are just collecting dust at back of the storage and never gets used. In this sense, minimalism is similar to Konmari method because you only have the things that have meaning in your life i.e. 'sparks joy'; people still can have a lot of clothes as long as each item has a meaning and they are actually used. I like minimalism because it has helped me to think what do I really need in my life and how can I make life easier. I've moved a lot in a few years, and owning a lot of stuff was frustrating and I realised that not every item is needed nor it doesn't bring me joy. Thanks to minimalism I only have the things I use and has a meaning in my life, and I really try to think when I have an urge to buy something 'do I really need this? am I gonna use it?'

Marie's tweet debunking KonMari = Minimalism was news to me. Because I thought her rule: What sparks JOY... using the word JOY was intentional. It didn't say what sparks happiness? Comfort? It was Joy. And in my interpretation... Joy is very selective in our lives. The strong, explosive yet etherial feeling that comes very rarely means that the selection process is "strict" in a way. In my mind, very little material possessions would spark joy and therefore, the outcome would be minimalism. I actually cleaned out my room KonMari style last year and didn't achieve minimalism which left me feeling a little bit disappointed in myself but after watching her Netflix show and having other people as point of comparisons, I felt quite accomplished with my cleanse haha.

I think it’s because she’s connecting it to _The Minimalists_ version of minimalism. The two runners of the podcast and stars of the minimalism Netflix documentary have also talked about the KonMari method to express that they also think they’re different. I think they both view it more in the sense of the process rather than the outcome.
Where Marie would say you should pursue your ideal life by giving attention to things you absolutely love, Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus would say you should pursue a simplified life and find joy through that simplicity. There is a question of if you like something but it’s always followed by if it’s useful. They do overlap because a lot of people may find that their ideal life _is_ one that’s incredibly simplified with things that are mainly there for utility with maybe a collection or two of things that don’t feel like they clutter or distract your life but something I think Marie Kondo’s show did a great job of doing was showing that a lot of people’s lives don’t turn into that. Many of the episodes have people that still have what might be considered a lot of clothes, books, decorations, and miscellaneous items all at the same time but she teaches them how to cherish _all_ of it; to give their things attention and a home and placing much more emphasis on the personal connection to your items than western minimalism.
I think it’s probably pretty common for people to be surprised that they haven’t gotten rid of as much as they thought they would but I also think it goes in waves. Like it’s something that can’t necessarily be done once because your vision of your life may change with time so you may actually add to a category or continue to downsize another

Since I have a affinity with anything Japanese, I actually started my journey with the KonMari method. when i finished it I stumbled upon minimalism then the debt free movement and started to make my own recipe combining them into my life. Now I am learning about the low impact/zero waste lifestyle and adding that to the recipe.
For me there is no distinction of what lifestyle I have or who I am because I am all of them and I am also not 100% following everything. I am just taking bits and pieces of the pros that fits my life right now and adding immense value while also sparking joy by helping the environment one reusable item at a time and saving money and have financial peace :D

I have too many hobbies to be a minimalist, lol. I do love the KonMari method, though. I've been slowly going through my little studio apartment for a year and really starting to love it. My goal is to make it a space that I just absolutely enjoy and will be stress free in, kind of like my own little sanctuary. Before the KonMari method, I would almost say that I was a hoarder, mostly an emotional hoarder, keeping everything that would have a memory to it, but after doing her method, she definitely changed my life and my way of thinking. So I am very thankful for Mari.

Even minimalism is different for each person - what we value and need in our lives differ from person to person. I think the Kon-Mari method helps you see value in what you own and rid yourself of things that do not add value, which also can work with minimalism, which wants you to utilize the things you own and embrace multi-purpose items. I think both concepts can live together peacefully. With anything, there are extremes, so there are people who have a goal of only owning 100 things, so it's more about what works best for the goal vs. what makes you happy.
The only time I think the Kon-Mari method doesn't really work is for people have actual disorders, like hoarding. Thanking items for most people is a way of showing gratitude and understanding the value things can bring to us in our lives, but for others, like my mother, it would encourage her to keep EVERYTHING, because she has an emotional connection to every thing in her house. I could see the method backfiring on people with those thought processes. I'd like to point out that anyone Marie Kondo works with is considered "normal". I've never seen her handle someone with actual hoarding tendencies.

      You make an excellent point.
The first time I watches a true Hoarders situation it took me a bit to process what I was even seeing.
At one point I looked at the person's eyes... and.. Owww..ok, I finally understood. A true hoarder has a mental disorder... they need deep therapy and will sometimes never fully recover.
Niecy Nash of Clean House fame almost always dealt with 'normal' families with clutter, ... not hoarders... who are mentally challenged. They are two very different issues.

Hi I just wanted to thank you for everything you've done for me. I started watching your videos about a year ago and you're the one who inspired me to pick up Marie Kondo's book and implement konmari into my lifestyle (which has been amazing!) Not only that though. You inspire me to be the best version of myself possible. I've been in a bad place for a little while, these past two weeks have especially been pretty terrible what with starting the new semester in college and balancing my classes while thinking about all the expectations i have for myself and the pressure i feel from everyone else around me to be certain things, fill certain roles etc. I crashed hard and was feeling like such a useless person for not persevering and for continuing to stay in that negative space i work so hard to avoid. Finally after watching this video and hearing your voice and seeing your face again after not doing so for a long time I feel reenergized and i'm taken back to the feelings i had when i was in my best mindset and living the best life i possibly could. thank you so much you mean the world to me

I loved hearing your thoughts! This series really inspired me to "KonMari" my own home again, as I didn't have time to do it properly when I first read the book four years ago. I put together a 30 day challenge, and it is kicking my butt. I just posted my Day 10 video, and I had such a hard time letting go of stationary (I kept all my journals, notebooks, etc.). I'm finding that some categories are very difficult, whereas some (like CDs and DVDs) were relatively easy. Now that I'm going through the process myself, I feel like I can relate so much better with the series and how the families felt while tidying. x

You are a genuine person. I love watching your videos. Be yourself, everyone else is taken. As far as minimalism is concerned, I think you are leaning more towards, sparking joy...than the strict rules of a minimalist . Being organized is very freeing. I come from a family of hoarders. While I am not a hoarder, I tend to have too much...stuff. I continually check myself. I only use a closet which is four foot by six foot. That contains every piece of clothing, shoes, boots, handbags, and under garments. To be able to see everything, makes for a quick reminder. If I go shopping, I give away the same amount that I buy. That works for me. Be the beautiful self you are.

Loved the video! I started "konmari-ing" over a year ago, but got interrupted by , well, life, and now that I'm fit to continue it's so cool to have this massive media support in this huge endeavor.
The down side of it is that everyone and the grandma is making konmari videos, and in such multitude there is a lot of repetition and lesser quality videos; I start watching, but some just spark rage!
This, however, was a lovely refresher. I started again soon after New Year and I can already see the tidying impacting my life and the way I think. Btw, I am tackling kitchen today - all the cooking- and foodware.
Thanks again for your thoughts, I can relate to so much of what you say. And I'm subscribing.

It’s my first time on your channel and I do like how you share the information here. I myself read KonMarie methods last year but for some reason, I wasn’t able to put myself down to clean up my room (I live with my Mother). And after a traumatic experience with people late last year/early this year, something in me sparked, that I sat down in my room everyday in the evening till 2am, just sorting things slowly, asking myself if those items sparked joy or not, this gave me inner peace, that I forgotten how it felt internally.
Even though I would be cleaning a section of my room after work till past midnight, I didn’t feel tired, or felt like it was a chore. It felt great. I threw out almost 50 bags of items, I organised my items, my book, my cosmetics, my wardrobe. Even managed to get some drawers and compartments from local stores and Taobao to help me keep it neat.
My room now looks way much better than before, and yes there is still a bit of mess. I wouldn’t foresee myself to be a minimalist person but I want to keep things that makes me happy in my room, in the house I share with my mum. It has granted me a little more mental strength while going through PTSD and anxiety, that many people who care for me, realised the light in me.
I hope more people would have a chance to KonMarie and also to watch your videos too, to spark a change in their life. :)

I totally LOVED the inclusiveness. Homosexual and heterosexual couples, all ages and backgrounds, without making it a big deal at all. I also noticed how (cis het) men are socialized SO differently as opposed to women. It's really sad, thinking of the fact that it is 2019 now, and all the old-fashioned gender roles are still engrained in the succeeding generations... I hope this will soon be a thing of the past.
KonMari is not equal to Minimalism, I guess, since the art of storing, folding etc. is not "like a rulebook" for the latter, but for the first :) That is why one is a METHOD and the other is a LIFESTYLE. They have touchpoints for sure, and they don't exclude eachother.

vegan feminist hey, I thought your comment was interesting because in my interpretation anyway, I think Marie Kondo kind of split the tasks that way. Like there was a part I think the partner was a woman and Marie told her let’s work in the kitchen and she looked like she wasn’t sure at first that it was the section she wanted to work on. I did notice she always worked with the ladies in the kitchen and men in the garage but idk if that is how they would necessarily have done it without her guidance. (If that makes sense).

I saw that IG comment too about her thoughts on minimalism and I actually agree entirely. I love the aesthetic, idea, and look of minimalism, but I also find that I collect a lot of things (random stationery/ stickers, Funko Pop figurines, hats) that actually do spark joy and that’s why I never considered myself a minimalist.
That said, because I’ve just moved into my new place this month, the whole process has just been KonMari. I still have a third of unpacking left to do, and I’ve honestly been avoiding it because most of that stuff I feel like I have to discard it all out for not sparking joy. More on that later!

I did the whole Konmari process two years ago but having binged watched her whole series I have stared again, so inspired. You’re right you do acquire items that have no designated home but starting it all again it’s become quite easy to find places as I rearrange things. Personally I don’t see this as minimalism, to me it’s more of a gratitude journey and the results make everything seem fresh. Good luck with your Konmari process in your new home and wishing you every happiness there x

  • @tokiaholic

I feel somewhere in between Konmari and minimalism. I love the idea of only owning things that spark joy but I also feel like only owning what you really need is healthy for me. I’m a “victim” of retail therapy, and being able to ask myself “Do I really need this, even if it sparks joy?” has helped me a lot. Personally, retail therapy items are very dangerous cause all of them spark joy... except it’s only in the moment I hold them and I feel in need of them. Then once I get them, I don’t use them or even regret getting them.
So I think the grey area between Konmari and minimalism is what works best for me. I try to only buy and own what I truly need, and only if it sparks joy and I want the item with me “from this moment going forward”.
    P. S. I got my AoL workbook yesterday and I love it to bits. I also haven’t thrown away the box because I thought it would be perfect to organize drawers, so weird to know that’s what you meant it for!

The family in episode 3 reminded me of my own family. We moved to a new part of our country to a much smaller home and seeing how they struggled with storage is the same problem that we had, just at a greater scale.
I adopted the minimalist lifestyle just before we moved so had much less to work with. But once we arrived I realised I could get rid of more and I did. I am convinced it is what made last year so good for us, we could focus on the important things in our life instead of items in our life.

It’s the same for vegans who like to eat cheese once in a while or vegetarians who eat meat one time a year or something. Trying to live zero waste but you buy one item in plastic, because it’s your favourit food. People judge other people who are trying to do something good. Let them try and let them fail. Compliment others on what they are doing great instead of taking them down, let’s make this world a better place, we are the onces that can do this!

Love the show, bought the book but I'm in the middle of finishing another book before I crack it open.
Between your videos, Netflix, and everything I've learned so far, I almost want to call the KonMari method a healthy approach to minimalism. Minimalism, at least online, seems to have gone over the deep end, almost to an extreme. KonMari is a healthy, practical, and efficient approach to reducing consumerism, clutter, and focusing on what you enjoy, need, and getting rid of waste. You could also call it a practical approach to consumerism because it gives you permission to buy and own things, without delving into the realm of excess. What I love most about it is that it's a balanced approach. You don't need to own hoards and hoards of items but you also don't need to get rid of all your worldly possessions. In a world (well internet) that seems to operate in absolutes, Marie Kondo says, "no, let's be practical, realistic, and efficient about it while acknowledging your human emotional needs as well." And I think that's why this method sparks me joy ;)

People can be so rude. Your content is great. Thanks! I’m so motivated with the Kon Mari method. I’ve cleared so many clothes from my closet that I haven’t worn in some cases 10 years.

I absolutely love the Kon Mari method! The next category I have to go through is sentimental. It’s so nice surrounding yourself with only things you love. Thanks for sharing!!💜

I totally agree with the book collecting part. One of the things I don’t like about moving (especially to a new city) is that I’d have to get rid of all my books and notebooks and just knick knacks that have a lot of sentimental value but very little practical value.

I’ve always thought of minimalism (and the minimalists themselves say) to advocate keeping whatever makes you happy, even before I heard about the Konmari method and sparking joy

Totally agree with your thought about Konmarie and minimalism. For me, spark joy brings a better life for me and control we buying excessive stuff that we don't need and do not spark joy us because we just wanna buy it.

💜Loved the book Tidying up! I have always perceived minimalism as a way of life living simply. Having things that you either loved or needed, not a specific number of things. We should have things that serve us to keep them and not the other way around.
Thanking our things before letting them go is a great way of releasing ourselves any guilt we may carry for items. It frees us to live!
It is sad that so many people are tied down to the large amount of things that actual own them. Storage units shouldn’t be need because your house is too full. They should only be used as a transition.
Thanks Aileen for introducing me to Marie Kondo! It’s been freeing 🦋
