I first came across Marie Kondo when a friend of mine told me about her book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up”. I never thought to read it because well, at the time it just didn’t seem that interesting to me. Fast forward a few years, I came across Marie Kondo’s Netflix show “Tidying up with Marie Kondo”, watched it, and since have been meaning to apply her KonMarie method of cleaning on decluttering and tidying my room.
I honestly never thought that cleaning my room and clearing it of extreme clutter would change my life, but boy am I wrong. I was overly optimistic and thought I’d be able to get through cleaning and decluttering my bedroom in a day; but it ended taking a few days actually. I cleared and cleaned and tidied everything from clothes, to books, to papers, to komono (small items & things) and finally, sentimental items.
The sentimental items really were the hardest - i am a... very sentimental person and i attach a lot of my memories to physical items. I moved a lot as a kid, moved cities a lot, and inevitably changed schools a lot too, so over the years, i have ended up keeping a lot of things - from cards i get from friends, notes i used to pass in school, to tickets to theme parks, or airplane tickets from trips i really enjoyed. i have hoarding tendencies to be honest and it was hard to get rid of some of the sentimental stuff but trying to minimize my possessions to just those that spark joy was actually quite freeing - like a weight lifted off.
So, clean with me, declutter with me and i hope you enjoyed this video.
If you liked it, do let me know! and if you have any video requests, let me know too!
Marie Kondo's 6 Basic Rules of Tidying and Decluttering:
1. Commit yourself to tidying up
2. Know why you're doing it
3. Finish discarding first
4. Tidy things by category, not by location
5. Follow the order of: Clothes, Books, Paper, Komono (small items & things) and Sentimental items
6. Ask yourself - does it spark joy?

EXTREME DECLUTTER (MINIMALISM DECLUTTERING) USING MARIE KONDO’s KONMARI METHOD (BEFORE & AFTER - Clean With Me 2020)
Finally, someone with actual clutter. I'm tired of seeing all the konmari videos where the person has a little pile of junk in their otherwise nicely tidied and decorated room, lol.
I keep a lot of the same kinds of sentimental items too, can definitely relate. I'm trying to organize my papers right now, but I'm having trouble letting go. (I also keep empty boxes and things that just junk up my room. I don't why either). I also have "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck," haha
I've put cards and such in a photo album. That way made it nice to look at whenver I get sentimental.
That's a great idea! 💡
Awesome suggestion, thank you!
Excellent idea... 😉
that’s actually brilliant. No more spills when i have to move my stationary box around. And depending on the size I can make sure my largest cards will all fit in the same place as my smallest ones.. Thanks!
Oh I like this idea! Thank you!
HAHAHAHAHA! "Oh no I think I was meant to bless this room first!" It's always so easy to watch a decluttering video but that inner turnmoil and frustration is always underestimated. I love how easy it is to watch this!
Just a tip, I also save a LOT of sentimental ”clutter”. After I got a specific box to out all those things in the ”clutter” got a lot easier to handel.😁
Ahhh love this!
Who else is watching this in quarentine as a motivation 😂
Hahaha good luck!
i like your profile picture:)
🏳️🌈 last day of pride my dude
I started scrapbooking and putting sentimental paper things (cards, pictures, certificates, tickets, etc) in them. So far I have 3 with each having different types of memories in them and it's really fun!
That’s awesome! I really should start doing that will my remaining tickets and receipts and what not
I've learnt a good minimalist rule of thumb is to keep the number of clothing items to a maximum of about 50 , when you get a new item of clothing then one has to go . anyway great job on the declutter.
that's an awesome idea, its kinda like a capsule wardrobe !
I've tried that so many times, but I can't manage to downsize to less than 100. I need separate clothes for my work and outside so that's almost automatic doubling of clothes. Plus clothes for excercise, swimming, and fancy clothes, and some for messy work.
It's important to note that the Konmari method is not minimalism. It's not about having less but cherishing each and every item you own. Minimalism is not for everyone. On the other hand, I think the Konmari method is something everyone can apply to their life as its more of a perspective on how to view life and things we own.
@@keyarca @moonandback everyone's personal perfect number of anything is, well, personal :). I tried project333 at some point (using 33 items of clothing, including shoes and outdoor clothes, excluding underwear, sports clothes, for 3 months, keeping the rest of your things stored). It was a really cool experiment, and I did also find out what I missed. 33 items was not enough for me, and I prefer to use all my clothes all year round, anyway, so storing them and picking 33 new items in the new season wasn't for me - but my point is, as long as you are conscious and critical about what you own and why, the number shouldn't matter too much. As soon as you've found your own equilibrium, you can still implement the one-in-one-out rule. And yet another reason why the Konmari method works for so many different types of people... As key arca pointed out, it's not really about minimalism. The goal is to only own the things that actively make your life better, and that is very easy to combine with finding that sweet spot of 'how many things' as well, in my experience :)
@@JinMeowsoon With these kind of constraints you propose simply decluttering your house every summer could be considered casual minimalism, no? Not that I have deeply looked into minimalism but from the UA-cam minimalist I have watched minimalism is about being able to free ourselves from the attachment of things and focuses on the utility and purpose. Marie Kondo focuses on finding what brings happiness and surrounding ourselves with it in a purposeful way. I find that a lot of minimalist don't necessarily love her method as it still allows for attachment and overabundance of items. Marie Kondo says herself that what she is doing is not minimalism. I agree that they have similarities and crossovers, heck her method is often used as a gateway into minimalism! But imo... i think saying that they are both minimalism undermines what each is trying to do.
I struggle for my whole life with this issue of saving stuff, family of moderate level hoarders , I used to be poor and lived in studios with little possessions and I was fine, I hope to get back to that level
My mom deals with the same thing, she has trouble getting rid of old things because she struggled to get said things. We still have those old box tv's in our garage just collecting dust.
Check out hoarders heart on UA-cam that might help
Good job in cleaning up your room! There's always the satisfaction when you walk into a neat and clean room after a long day :)
Thank you! And yes I can’t agree more☺️
Janice, l love it when you say: “l hope you’re doing well” at the beginning & “BYEEE” at the conclusion of each one of your videos ... you look so
sweet & gorgeous when you do that ! 👍👍👍
haha thanks for watching!
Can't forget her classic hello hello hello hahah a
Finally someone with a messy room and not just loads of clothes that make it look cluttered.
I have always been embarrased of my room. I attempted the marie kondo method, but kept keeping all the things.
I'm so happy for you seeing the awesome results in your room and how you pulled through even in front of the huge pile of clothes and papers. The sentimentals you should definitely keep without remorse. These things can't be replaced after all. MK changed my life so much since I started using the method. It's true, if you go through it once successfully, you will never need to do it again. It's such a liberating feeling to be able to LET GO of things without any anxiety. I also stopped any impulse buying and became in general much more aware of quality and design of new purchases. You will see, soon you will be folding clothes, towels, bedsheets neatly in seconds like it's a reflex. Everyone deserves to live in a clean, decluttered, beautiful space.
This is amazing! Keep up the great work! 💕
Thank you Natalie 😊
It looks SO much better, wow! Awesome job!
Well done Janice, what an amazing job you did with your room.
I love how eloquent you are! Really makes a difference when you're watching videos
Haha thanks Cynthia! ☺️
Way to go looks amazing!
Thank you Janice for sharing. It is so refreshing to see such honesty. Now to sort out my flat!
Yay!! Good for you!!
Out of all the people I've watched using this method (I've been wanting to declutter my room and convince my mom to downsize too) you are the most like me. I have a lot of close, but tend to stick with like 5 main sets, and I put a lot of sentemential value on small items. Thank you for the video though!
GIRL. I am low key horrified you have your admission cert laying around like that! It better be framed by the next video!
I just accidentally bumped into your video, and I'm definitely staying! I fell in love with your manner of speaking and everything else, I'm looking forward to watching other videos! Thank you so much, you brought a lot of joy to me
These 'after' shots sparked joy for me! :D Thanks for the motivation!!!!
JANICE!! I use to watch your videos a few years back but then you stopped uploading but I'm glad you've been back! I noticed you're back when I saw this vid in my recommended :)
Omg hi! I rmb your comments back in the day! Thank you so much for the comment :)
ive watxhed a lot of videos of this kind but I have to say that this video has POWER
Haha cheers!
I loved the transformation! It looks great! 🙂 Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for watching !
I just found your channel. I love it! I am the exact same way about cards. My grandma is 91, and every card or letter that I get from here I keep because I never know when it will be the last one. And I was a pre-K teacher for many years, so looking back on the hand drawn cards from the kiddos always makes me smile.
Thanks Jenn! I keep all the letters my grandma has written to me too, for the exact reason :)
I accidentally came across this video. I definitely loved the content. That before and after wow. Btw you have the best smile.
Well done! Looks great. (I've been meaning to do this for ages.)
Extremely satisfying to watch this decluttering!
Thanks Priscilla!
I recently dealed with most of the cards I received on my wedding , and kept only 2 most beautiful ones. The way I dealed with them is-burn them. I read each card again carefully before I throw them into the fireplace, and seeing them spark bright flame made me feel the love it carried. I prefer burning them than throw them into recycle bin.
I take a photo of them and then throw them away but will be able to look at them whenever I feel sentimental!!! Works great!!!
Beautiful!! Looks so great. Maybe you could invest 40-$50 & get a comforter fm Target or Marshall's(if they're open yet). I think it would tie it all together!👍
Great video. Thanks for the motivation.
THE DIFFERENCE!! made me so happy to see, the music went along great with it :D
Haha I’m glad, thanks for watching !
That folding and rolling of clothes is like how I pack my case when travelling. Get loads more in and it doesn't crease the same. Over the years ive moved house so many times I've lost my degree certificate and swimming certificates from when I was a child.
The things we're doing while in lock down.
Looks great! Bet you feel much better being in your room!
Wow! great job! what an incredible difference! 😊
Your personality is golden! 🤣I would definitely want to be your friend. This was a blast to watch✨

Haha good luck guys! Surprisingly I actually really enjoyed the process lol
great job on decluttering. It looks organize and clean.
There are many of us who do not like to throw things away including empty boxes you are not alone 😀 💕 you are so sweet
Actually your room was pretty ok to start with. You don't have that much stuff actually. 😅 But I see the difference at the end. Also I like that u kept all your existing furniture. It's like making the best of what u have.
Your room even became more bright 😍
☺️
You could've done scrapbooking with all those tickets and receipts!
Love it!
Sharifa Kosim this is an amazing idea, thank you, I never know what I should do with the small papers and things, but I want to save them, this is a so so so good idea, I’m gonna do that💛 thanks💛💛
IKR my heart broke those things are priceless to me
OMS! Girl you are seriously like the doppelganger of my insides! Good grief! I'm gonna try that komono thingy soon.... Yeah... Real soon! Your room looks real good and tidy.

Thank you!
Good job Janice.
Good job! In the middle of konmarie’ing my 9year old room. Can’t wait almost there
Nice vid ! 10/10
Great job!!
Thank you!
I appreciate that you actually followed her method (so many people title their videos as Konmari, but then don’t use it at all).
Good job! Your room looks so tidy :)
Good job Janice . Keep smiling 😄
Thanks max!
Last week I cleaned up half my room, got fed up to complete it. I know I won't have time after this lock down, your video motivated me to finish the rest. Thank you 👍
good luck! its worth it!
Very nice experience. Thank you for sharing.
This was awesome and inspiring!! I am now cleaning my room haha
you have done a great job! i really like your room now. your becoming an adult with a good start. keep it up! some sugestions get all black slip proof hangers, keep sentimental items in a nice box, purge often to keep looking good. try other areas now like makeup and kitchen! great job i enjoyed your video
Thanks so much Jennifer! :)
Thank you for the inspiration!
Thank you for watching !
Good job!!
Great job 😊🙌🏼
Congratulations! A lot of effort, but a beautiful, restful room when you finished!
Yes it was definitely worth it :)
I'm going through a big decluttering myself before moving and for all those sentimental pictures and tickets and notes, I've found that it's a great idea to scan them into my computer then save them with pictures of those trips or events. Or make albums of early school pictures. Or family photos. Then i can save only the really important ones or ones that are too odd to scan
That looks so great 👌🏼
Thanks Rebecca!
long socks, shorts and sweatshirt, my favorite kind of outfit
Watching you go through has inspired me to go through the MK again! I always have problems with the sentimental items. And also, do a follow up on this in six months to let us know how you’ve kept it up, or not!
Great idea! I’ll see how we go in 6 months. Hopefully I’m able to keep this up 😅
I related so hard to this video! Especially when you mentioned the cards and tickets 🎫! And the very end (peeling the plastic) :)
Hahaha... I really enjoy watching your videos your so hilarious and definitely relate to this one, thanks for making viewer enjoy your variety of segments, your a natural...
Not only you~ my chair always has clothes on it too hahaha 😂 Well...I'm a lazy one I don't like to fold my clothes. I just hang it all 🤣
The final look is absolutely clean and neat! Well done Janice~! 👍😎 Alright, I think I should clean my messy space too.
Thanks for inspiring me Yeah~ 😍🙏
Hahaha yes I had to get rid of the clothes chair.. was getting outta control
Good job. I'm happy for you.
Good job! Kudos!
Omg! Photos of lil Janice are so adorable. Well done! So relatable. I’ve also kept my birthday cards as well.
Haha thank you! Yeah I keep all my letters and cards in a box
FIrst of all you are too cute. I was looking to see if an English woman came up behind you, but no, it is you! Love the accent. You have inspired me. Loved your video. Thank you..
Nice job! Trying to get some inspiration to help me go through my massive level of books. The last attempt I made didn't go well at all.
You have such a cute and engaging personality. I like listening to you, and the little goody two-shoes girl was a doll!
You've given me inspiration....... I hope. Lol.
Congratulations. Well done. I am sure that you will find working in your new uncluttered space much more enjoyable.
Great cleaning 👍 !!!
You're so cute! Great job...but...but... I kept waiting to see all the bags of clothes and stuff that went away!
Well done you!! I'm just about to start....!!
Goood luck!
Your editing with the music is 👌👌👌

I know right! There’s just something about it
Congrats for clean room! c: Hmm..use memory/photo album scrapbook for these travel and cards! You used clean on the mirror is old newspaper? o,o?
I decluttered a few weeks ago. I got so bored over the Easter Long Long weekend and threw out so much rubbish I accumulated over the years. Feels good!
It does feel so good hey!
