  • Marie Kondo is the reason everyone you know is suddenly cleaning up. She wrote a book and has a Netflix show called “Tidying Up.” If you haven’t seen it - basically, she makes people get rid of stuff. We’ve been doing our show for 16 years and Jimmy has accumulated a lot of stuff in his office at work. So someone thought it would be a good idea to ask Marie Kondo to help tidy up his office and this is how that went.

    Jimmy's missing the point completely. He can only see the sillyness of thanking socks and waking up books. Ofc you're not doing it for the inanimate objects, Jimmy. You're doing it to wake up something in yourself. Finding appreciation in the surrounding you otherwise take for granted. And by doing so, clearly seeing what items brings you joy and which ones that mean nothing to you, and only take up space.

    • @prodestrian
      @prodestrian 5 років тому +194

      As I understand it, it's based on a Shinto belief that objects can have a "soul" after being owned for a long time. That's why she wakes up the books, introduces herself to the house, and thanks items that aren't wanted anymore. It's not just a silly gimmick that she came up with, it's obviously an important belief to her that she wanted to share with the world.

    • @globalklaus
      @globalklaus 5 років тому +111

      @@prodestrian Absolutely. You are totally correct. But it's not an easy transition for westerners. But the end result is the same. You don't really have to believe in the soul of inanimate things to take this serious. Just the realization that you're doing this to find appreciation, or "spark", for your every day surroundings.

    • @Pandababy1950
      @Pandababy1950 5 років тому +75

    Oh my gosh. I'm from Japan, I love all my sweet American friends but it hurts to watch someone treating a Japanese lady like this. How American people act is already so different coming from Japan. You have to get used to talking loudly, you have to learn to speak very straight forward, you have to learn to verbally say "no" if you don't like something.We have this saying called "Read the air" meaning that we need to be sensing what others are feeling without having to make them say it. And Japanese are generally very respectful to the point where when Japanese people encounter something that they find disrespectful, they still smile, they still deal with it and hope that the other person will sense it, realize it and stop doing it. Ok, it might sound silly to some of you guys but I really did struggle with this when I first move to the US 2 years ago. I couldn't handle people's sarcasm (We rarely ever say sarcastic stuff), I didn't know what to do when people are making fun of me, I didn't know how to handle pushy people but to smile and be patient. I just hope that she is surrounded by many sweet people, leaving her country and coming to the US for work for a long term couldn't be an easy thing especially she is not fully comfortable with speaking English yet.

    • @TiniestKelp
      @TiniestKelp 5 років тому +58

      I'm not even Japanese, but what you said is so true! I still feel weird hanging out with "friends" who are extremely sarcastic and have an attitude of "it's just a joke." I would normally not be friends with people like that, but when they're your roommate or unavoidable work/school mate, it can be really draining. I don't know if I'm supposed to be "inconsiderate" back or just laugh with them laughing at me.
      I tried the golden rule once (treating someone the way they treat me) by bragging to a roommate who brags endlessly and she responded with "RUDE." I was so confused because I treated her the way she treated me but I was called rude. Normally I would just nod or try to sympathize, but after that I was like, could I have been calling her rude the whole time too? lol

      I'm not Japanese (or American), but I'm sure a lot of people from the West are able to sense it when someone is feeling uncomfortable and "read the air". I guess it's a bit easier for us to say "no", but we struggle with it in certain situations as well. But what I saw in this video is just so disrespectful! Not everyone in the West is that rude, luckily.

    Stephen Colbert is very respectful and kind to Marie, if you want to check out his interview. At one point the audience laughs when they're both kneeling to greet and thank his desk space, and Stephen makes sure to take the brunt of it off of her. He makes a dreamy face, looks up at the ceiling, and says "Thank you Ed Sullivan", but then follows Marie's lead and respectfully bows. And the audience applauds. He didn't play into the laughs, try to make a cheesy joke about the method, anything. It's a culture clash, but Stephen managed to navigate around it without leaving Marie embarrassed.

Whenever someone comes on their show who actually is there to educate rather than just tell stories about themselves and have a conversation a lot of hosts seem to feel the need that it still has ti be their show, their comedy, their voice that should be heard in between. Had to check out the show after about the tenth time hearing about it and gotta say, it's an amazing method. More than just a declutter or minimalism idea but a way to be happier with the things you have. Started thinking about it and it can actually be used to help 'spark joy' with your money as well. A lot of the things we buy don't really make us happy so using those KonMari rules to declutter expenses really works.

    There's actually three syllables in her first name - the fact that it's spelled the same way as the common western name "Marie" is just a coincidence. It's まりえ or mah-ree-eh. Also her last name is pronounced kohn-doh, not kahn-do. Japanese pronunciation is pretty straightforward: just pronounce every vowel (don't combine the "i" and "e" in this case, for example) and pronounce each vowel the same way every time (it doesn't change based on English spelling).
