Although I thought I might get to Genesis II in this third lecture, and begin talking about Adam & Eve, it didn't turn out that way. There was more to be said about the idea of God as creator (with the Word as the process underlying the act of creation). I didn't mind, because it is very important to get God and the Creation of the Universe right before moving on :) .
In this lecture, I tried to outline something like this: for anything to be, there has to be a substrate (call it a potential) from which it emerges, a structure that provides the possibility of imposing order on that substrate, and the act of ordering, itself. So the first is something like the precosmogonic chaos (implicitly feminine); the second, God the Father; the third, what the Christian West has portrayed as the Son (the Word of Truth).

This could be JBP's magnum opus. This material is so rich and deep yet mostly neglected in this day and age. It is an incredible service to us that he has managed to find a way to re-frame these stories so that they are allowed to resonate with the modern, scientifically minded individual. The religious tend to fuse fantasies of authority, while some vagaries in so called sacred literature is by itself a most unlikely concept. The extreme unlikeliness of the literature being useful as anything more than a tool of the state, seems less grounded in reality.

I was agnostic until a couple years ago I met an awesome pastor. He is tattooed, has a past (he saw his potential to be a monster and woke), service was fun and exciting and everyone was every friendly. I was baptized. And he did help. Then covid.... I never established a genuine belief. After listening to Jordan Peterson for nearly a year, and after watching three of these biblical lectures, I only wish I could thank him in person. Hearing these have really given me a muchh deeper understanding and real appreciation for The Bible and religion in general. Such an amazing person that more people should come to know. Media/people definitely idolize the wrong people.

Jordan Peterson is a guy worth following. I’ve made adjustments in my life based on his sermons.
“I have never, in all my years as a clinical psychologist-and this is something that really does terrify me-I have never seen anyone, ever, get away with anything at all, even once.” (1:37:14)
I too think that whenever I make an exception from acting properly to play a videogame once. Because whatever you do, you also sort of start building a habit out of it and at the same time you fail at starting to create new, better habits. It's the notion that everything you do matters. So then I am more likely to play games again next week instead of grappling with chaos properly. It might not be exactly what he means with that quote, but I don't think it's too different either.

People get away with things all of the time. Look at the number of unsolved murders. And bad things eventually happen to everyone, whether or not they’ve done anything to cause it. We as humans will attempt to explain bad things that happen by tracing them back to bad things we’ve done. But sometimes it is only through selective reasoning and coincidence. This is so that we can encourage moral behavior and avoid the terrifying fact that we have no involvement in many of the horrible things that happen to us. If we can trace them back to some indiscretion that we inevitably have made it makes it seem as though it was not random and we (or God) has some sort of control over it.

@@anthonybrett Exactly. JP doesn't mean that people are always arrested, tried, and convicted of their crimes, but that people pay for their wrongdoings in other ways. I told someone that sins carry their own punishment. There's always a price. Often it's a price in deteriorating personal or business relationships (speaking of myself, here); sometimes it's less visible. But there's always a price.
I love how he is honest about when he doesn’t have enough knowledge to speak on a particular subject or answer a question. I love that humbleness, he doesn’t try to pretend like he knows everything.
I don't think he likes to settle on things he is always examining and reexamining and knows his opinion on something could change given different information.

I get your point, I do, and we should always be careful of what we allow into our brain, you are right. But I think you'll see from all the comments that he has led so much more people back to their faith, it would be rare and unlikely to have the effect you are talking about,
Cos 1 he is Steelmanning the bible, see how he fully fleshes out all the ideas?
2 he has all his cards out on the table. He speaks honestly about his discoveries and journey, and stated from the start that he is approaching this from a psychological point of view and
3 his secularism is partly what gives him such a big audience. See the interview he has with the pastor who commends him on getting the bible message out to so many in an age where church numbers are dropping.

I think them being free has to do with the notion that what comes as a result of philosophical degeneracy is greater overall than what he might gain as monetary value. i.e. he values the propagation of wisdom unrestrictedly, over it being restricted for revenue’s sake.

I listen to this playlist at night and I think my brain absorbs it while I sleep. When I wake in the middle of the night I realize it’s still going and no matter where it is it’s pure gold. It’s the best college class. I wish I had it when I was younger. It would have made a bridge to Christ for me. Perhaps I would have found a church I liked??? Instead I just found organized religion unpalatable. Now I can watch the Asbury revival and weep and I know why. I’m tuned into the eternal struggle of life and our need to seek connection with God. To seek God’s support and healing of our wounds from life and our bad choices.

I am three parts in and this is probably one of the most important talks I've ever listened to. Even if 10% of his ideas turned out to be right, it's still a revelation and a giant step in human understanding. This should be required viewing/reading in schools at some point!
Watching this series has been one of the best experiences i've ever had. It's amazing how knowledge can make the same message mean something much greater.
I've just had the epiphany that one of the 12 Labors of Hercules was cleaning the Augean Stables. Kinda like Jordan Peterson gives the assignment to clean their room to his patients.
Also the Greeks called pathos, the experience of virtuous struggle and suffering which would lead to fame and, in Hercules' case, immortality.
So I just think Jordan Peterson is the modern narrator of a deep-rooted ancient wisdom we had lost through time and now we can finally comprehend thanks to guys like him.

Except if it were lost, he wouldn't be talking about it. More like misplaced and ignored.
A lot of what he talks about is universal wisdom and classical knowledge. Many of us already know these things in our deepest souls but don’t dredge them out and put them into words. Much of the concepts he talks about are actually just bringing us up to speed with things that used to be taught in schools and colleges. The rest are his original discoveries and theories attained through a very methodical deconstruction of these texts.
So thrilled with this series. JP has helped me make sense of things that I grew up with and rejected but sensed all along had a depth I didn't understand. I have woken up to the possibility of the transcendent and welcomed it gladly back into my life. Not as the religion, but as a way of being for all humanity.

Yup. After graduating from a private Christian school in middle school, I made a promise to myself to stay away from religion, religious people, and especially that dumb bible. Fast forward to now and JBP, purchased a bible, reading it, really enjoying all the stories and ideas - like you said, he is a great contributor to Christianity. If he and people like him keep it up, religion might even be rescued enough to continue along into the future.
He goes "you cant make sense of sense data without an a priori structure, you cant extract from sense data the structure that enables you to extract sense from sense data" without stuttering, then proceeds to forget the word "bottle"
he's too sophisticated for simple nouns. LOL. I once played tennis beside Anna Kournikova at a friendly fun raiser. she couldn't keep the ball in play with mediocre club players. I think as a professional, she hasn't seen a tennis ball move so slowly in years and it was "a different game". maybe that's what "bottle" is for Peterson. just a little too simplistic!
I wondered whether that was some genius acting to demonstrate an example, or a coincidence of such precise synchronicity that Jordan being on that stage saying what he's saying is exactly what the universe wants.

I just think he was in his imagination and thoughts talking about the images. And then it’s a shift. It’s pretty normal to get carried away in deep thought with complex logic and not be able to draw it back to the immediate present. Think about being in deep thought when driving and you have no idea how you got it your destination.

As someone who has been living life like a sheep, with no knowledge of the world around me, I can say this series has been mind bogglingly eye opening. Peterson's mental journey by lecture successfully takes me on a rollercoaster, and has me rethinking not only my own psyche, but the anthropological universe as a whole. This series ties it all together. Everything I have learned about the world has little to no context until I uncover the ideas Jordan Peterson shares. Most compelling 20 seconds of this entire lecture: 2:25:44-2:26:04 - you can almost ACTUALLY see the wheels turning in his brain. The response being formulated, the pieces being moved. I'm not sure I've ever been so captivated watching a man stand still, staring into nothing, before.

The fortitude this man has, to stops himself in his tracks, with I don't know how many people watching, and reconsider his entire approach to answering the question, ego and awkwardness be damned, is so damn arresting.
I think Jordan Peterson's "secret" is that he considers things from many levels of analysis - from biological (and even mechanical), to conceptual, to mythological. And thus he manages to illustrate that simple things are more interesting than they appear from just one - usually conventional - perspective. His style inspires creativity of various kinds, because a creative insight is mainly recognizing unconventional connections between conventional things. He kind of repeats many themes, so one might wonder why he is not boring? As a tentative answer, it seems to me that he is primarily valuable not as an inexhaustible repository of ideas, but as someone who inspires us to generate our own original ideas, be they big or small. It feels good to be a compatriot with this guy!
SK I think the purpose of repeating themes is to generate new ideas. It's the process he uses to ride the edge between order and chaos.
sammy2629 well it's also essential to keep ideas within constraints, otherwise ideas are just generated out of the aether with no solid footing to stand on.
SK good point, I find that intelligent people normally view the big picture first and then analyze categorically, coming to a nuanced understanding of complex issues. the more I use this analysis the more i believe that complex issues are difficult to explain in concrete and final terms. it is healthy to have some doubt in your beliefs. "for every complex problem there exists an answer that is clear, simple and wrong"
+Mike Woodruff: That's funny, man, about the simple and wrong answer to every complex problem! Continuing on your point about the process of analysis, I think the following metaphorical analogy captures it well. Trying to understand something is sort of like "looking" at your study subject through a lens and alternately zooming in (to see separate "pieces" of the problem, to count them, to study their structure, etc) and then zooming out (to see the whole subject again, but now in a new light, and also to be aware of overall borders of the subject and its interfaces with other subjects). And then you zoom in again, and so on. I think that this process generates a "living solution" that is continually updated based on the preceding analysis steps. Such a solution will initially appear as complex (too complex), but later it should start looking more and more "simple". That eventual looking simple is probably not so much an effect of its actual simplicity, but due to our changing our frame of understanding. Take care, and thanks for the interesting comment.
+Lita Davidson: He might indeed be naive, and Bill Gates might indeed have a personality disorder, but we do not know either of them enough to make such assertions. More importantly, my comment was not about Peterson as a person, but about a specific feature of his approach to analyzing problems and communicating his ideas. If we lose sight of specificity of the points we make, then any disagreement can quickly spiral out to name-calling and even violence. That is not only hurtful, but also completely unproductive.
Whenever I watch his lectures, I remember how dense his lectures are, although I watch his podcasts.

Enjoyed this so much. As simple as it sounds, I honestly believe that our having seven children was the great dangerous adventure of life for us. We were walking on the edge between chaos and order for 30 years raising these children, all the while discovering our shadow selves. (Parenting puts you on the edge of tears almost every day, and puts you in the situation of curbing your itch to murder some rowdy kid virtually every day. It's exhausting in that respect.) The greatest work of my life and the most satisfying.

- Don't try to save the world, clean up your room first;
- Integrate your shadow; see the evil and the good in humans and know it's also part of you;
- Stop trying to manipulate reality and speak what you think it's true;
- Don't say things that make you feel disintegrated inside.
I think JBP would say don't "speak what you think is true", speak *truth*. So if you say something you think is true and someone validly disagrees, honestly consider their dispute and evaluate your speech so it can be closer to *truth*

Years later and I still refresh myself on this series. I'll never forget the day, the moment I watched the outrageous students that surrounded Dr. Peterson on his campus. To watch this man take on his opportunity since day one. I have grown with Dr. Peterson .
I'm actually crying, the research done on the juvenile rats brought me to utter tears. That is so true, if children aren't allowed to play, their brains don't develop properly. This resonates with me so deeply because of how socially afraid I am. I'm an only child, and this state of solo development has caused my mental maturity to distort from my peers. I honestly thought I was just weird and different cause well, that's what I am, but the fusion of facts that I had little to no social interactions as a child and that juvenile rats who don't play don't mature correctly, well, I'm shocked and sad cause that's me, I'm an immature rat who just wanted to play with the other kids. My parents aren't to blame though, that's just how my life turned out. If anything, I just need to not repeat this and have at least two children. For their sake.
Cyberpunk Alchemist - I had a similar upbringing because my delusional parents opted to raise me in an unconventional way which had the side effect of making it damn near impossible for me to relate socially to other children or for them to relate to me. The result was predictable social isolation throughout my childhood and adolescence. By the time I was in my late teens and left home I was almost moot and unable to make any kind of sustained casual conversation although I could fake it for short periods of time. It has taken me over twenty years to largely undue the damage of my parents choices. I had to choose a career in a specialized technical discipline and devout myself to it. The only reason this worked was because the skill set (computer programming) was in demand and the employers didn’t typically expect their IT guys to have much in the way of social skills anyway. I did manage to marry and even support a family with two kids. It has been hard watching my kids have the normal healthy adolescence I never got to have and seeing what normal teenage life looks like. My advise would be to read long form high quality narrative fiction and as much as possible. Books written by Nobel Prize winners in Literature are a good place to start. Reading online news or technical books will not have the same mental effect. Creative writing exercises every day even if they are short can expand your vocabulary and linguistics skills. There is no quick or easy way to undo the damage but it can be overcome. In my mid-forties now and have finally found a strange sort of peace in life.
I grew up on a farm, middle of nowhere, as an only child for the first eleven years of my life. I wasn’t interested much in toys unless they were physical activities (swing set, big-wheel, bike, etc). I roamed the farm, and the forest alone, and the imagination I lacked with dolls were made up for in outdoor exploration. I moved to town so that my children would have other children to interact with, yet I still have a son much like myself who prefers to be alone or outdoors chopping on saplings. Different family structures, different environment- yet very similar personalities and play preferences, both of us also having diagnosis of ADHD. The old nurture over nature debate leaves me to believe that in some ways, we just are who we are.
The plight of lack of social development of single children is yet another outcome to be laid at the feet of planned parenthood ideology?
@@twelverules176 only child here too with same issues, my father was a kidder and always picked on me as a child and I believe that has hampered my ability to trust people since i was always waiting to be scared and also not having anyone to really talk too since I avoided him as much as possible. I love being on my own but even at 44 still feel emotionally as a teen and socially different and this has led me to not wanting children of my own.
Your parents must haven't done the proper job of making you concious enough of the even more dangerous outcome that could become from not socialising with your peers than keeping you on your safe shelter.
Wrote an entire memoir on my own struggle with PTSD. God, I wish I would have found Dr. Peterson 10 years before I began that process. Could have scrapped half of it. Thank you, JBP. God bless.

I was an atheist for a long time, became very religious after battling addiction then became disillusioned by my religion because I just couldn’t accept it as literal
This has helped bridge that gap in so many ways and makes so much sense
I love how doctor Peterson takes time and steps back before he speaks or answers. He doesn’t speak to speak, he speaks after thinking. One thing that I have learnt from him and trying to apply it in my life.
JBP takes simple things like children socializing by playing house and makes it seem like an alien is watching them and trying to figure out what they are up to.. i completely approve.
The description of the terrified gymnast standing on the edge of chaos and turning it into order inspiring people to involuntary worship with her perfection made me cry.

Sadly, church - an establishment that is normally led and attended by ignorant hypocrites - has become one of the worst advertisements for Christianity.
Here's an idea: Share these videos with your priest, pastor, or church group. Organize a weekly or monthly evening presenting these lectures on large screen, then form discussion groups. People are thirsty for understanding the bible. Too many are quick to reject religion and the bible and criticize without trying to understand.
unfortunately I think a vast majority of "true believers" would reject the good Doctor out of hand. Too many would accuse him of diluting the message, and being heretical. They want the bible to be literally true only, without allowing room for the figurative case as well. Tis a shame, cuz as far as I can tell Jordan essentially recognizes Jesus as the META hero that we should all seek to emulate.
I'm mormon, and nothing Dr. Peterson says conflicts with the doctrine. I know people, adults (I'm 15), who likewise partake in Peterson's intellectual enrichment, and these lectures on the bible are neither atheistic nor theological-like I said, objective.
Most christians I know are as encouraged by this message as anyone. CS Lewis himself started as an atheist who recognized the mythological value of the bible stories. He wondered if myths could be true. And Tolkien walked him through that. You have to love and believe in God if he is the author of myths that are true!

He cured my insomnia. When I wake up at 3am, I also listen with headphones, it distracts me from my chatter so I can fall asleep. I always wake up at a needed answer, write it down, fall back asleep, and apply it the next day.

On my 12th time watching this series, I just noticed that in this video at 12:22, is the only time in the entire biblical series where there is noticeable mic feedback, and the feedback occurs precisely at the moment when Doctor Peterson is talking about the power of speech
