Lecture II in my Psychological Significance of the Biblical Stories from May 23 at Isabel Bader Theatre, Toronto. In this lecture, I present Genesis 1, which presents the idea that a pre-existent cognitive structure (God the Father) uses the Logos, the Christian Word, the Second Person of the Trinity, to generate habitable order out of pre-cosmogonic chaos at the beginning of time. It is in that Image that Man and Woman are created -- indicating, perhaps, that it is (1) through speech that we participate in the creation of the cosmos of experience and (2) that what true speech creates is good.
It is a predicate of Western culture that each individual partakes in some manner in the divine. This is the true significance of consciousness, which has a world-creating aspect.

Even if no one will read this, I have to say it: Watching JP's lectures has been one of the most cathartic experiences of my life. His explanations have fundamentally changed the way I see the world. I am now a better man because I have regained the most valuable thing a human can have in their life: meaning.

this man saved me from suicide. it was like i was looking through a pin hole, and death was all i could see. and then i watch his lectures and my eyes are opened and i can see a future that isnt horrible. i can see a future that has potential for the very first time. words cant explain how profound of a revelation this was for me.

This biblical series has honestly changed my complete view on religion and that I was an ignorant fool for believing religion to be silly and not worth a minute of my time. I’m so grateful for this man and that he is making such meaningful deep impacts on society! More people need to hear this !

Peterson has changed my life. I'm a 29-year-old woman, and I have two sons. Because of him, I am a better mother, a better person. We are fortunate to live in the age of a great Thinker like him.
I’ve always thought... any mother should watch Jordan to better understand their sons. Luckily my mom became a fan of him before I did.

I’m not sure if I’ve seen anything more gratifying than witnessing Jordan Peterson glorify God by explaining The Word.
If I AM gratified of the fact Jordan is sharing an exploration of spirituality and The Word, being enlightened/conscious, and making life meaningful/worthwhile, then imagine how much more gratified God is being able to see from a far wider lens all of the glory Jordan is bringing Him from his positive influence on a large number of smart people.
The devil must be tearing Mr. Peterson’s life apart knowing how many young lives he is steering towards the truth of God. God bless Jordan Peterson. It’s truly amazing to God work through Jordan, one of the most articulate and thoughtful philosophers of modern times.
He just rambles on about topics that he has given little thought to. The blind trust that evolution happened has given many a mindset of Meaninglessness which is demonstrated by that blind man leading the blind.
I missed WW2, oil crisis in 70s, Vietnam, Gulf war, JFK, Apollo 1969, Woodstock... I thought our era was "meaningless", until I found JP.
Every time I hear him speak I can feel my life taking on more meaning and sanctity. I might just get through this.

Jordan Peterson is legit. I have hoped to find someone to pick up where Jung left off and be a crusader for the collective consciousness. This generation needs a philosopher of JP's magnitude. It's great that he's a clinical psychologist but his insight is so deep, he dives deep into the chaos and comes to the surface to illuminate the esoteric and the rational aspects of the logos- which makes him more like a contemporary shaman. I love, though, how humble he is. That's why I take him seriously! His audience is finally restless enough to demand a stage for this kind of Revelation and his dedication to the truth despite some of the persecution he's endured, gives me true respect for him.
Your very much right - you can see that Jung has definitely influenced JP. I love how he can draw out real life applicable meaning from symbolic story... The archetypes behind the stories passed down revealing all our collective unconscious is a supremely fascinating and rich way of viewing the world isnt it
I just told my husband this same thing, like 2 hours before I read your comment. I loved my semester long Philosophy class in High school, and I don’t claim to know much but just enough to acknowledge that JBP is the Thinker/philosopher of our time!! And I am so grateful to have the chance to listen to him! My husband recommended me his book 12 rules for life and I was IMPRESSED to say the least, he gets me excited about my beliefs, life, my dreams, thoughts, I am not exaggerating to say that in my view, he is “speaking” like a prophet, just like the ones in the Bible stories. As expected from the Logos (The One and Only I Am), this one was sent with an extraordinary ability to debate modern erroneous ideas using their own words.

I was painting the kitchen ceiling when, between brush strokes, I came upon a newspaper article headed, "How Dangerous Is Jordan B Peterson?" and I thought, "who the hell is Jordan B Peterson?" So I hunted him down to see how dangerous he is and I've been listening to his talks back to back as I paint. I had the walls to paint too so I've been listening to a lot of JBP. In fact, I was so absorbed in the talks, that first day, that I found myself still painting the ceiling at 3am. That beats Michelangelo I think. In this talk, I was particularly interested in the question about perfection that mentioned Lucifer and it occurred to me that the derivation of 'Lucifer' is 'light-bringer'. But look at the light he brings: the light of fire, which brings pain and death and the difference between that light and the light God brings - the sun for warmth and to grow food and the moon to keep us 'glued' onto the earth. And when Adam and Eve acquired consciousness, in order to evolve, they'd need something to 'kick' against - like the skateboarding kids. I haven't quite 'illuminated' myself here, but hey! thanks JBP for giving me something to kick against. Stay dangerous. Thank God I have six more ceilings to paint. :)

You have to remember that in the book of Ezekiel Lucifer was the most high angel, only because he was upheld by God.
God stopped to see what was truly in his heart...
God now uses him as a means of testing people, Satan "evil inclination"...
Ultimately Satan and all those who do not follow what Jordan/God is teaching, and accepting Jesus as the savior of those who work on the betterment of themselves will be punished for all of eternity.
Those who follow the commandments of God as taught to us by Jesus and the profits will have the right attributes to inhabit the new heaven and earth.
To back up this claim Jordan mentioned in one of his lectures about the only sin that God will not forgive are those who sin against the holy spirit.
Jordan's interpretation was wrong, how do we know this... Well, what is the purpose of the holy spirit? To help us understand, interpret and act upon the teachings of God.
So to Sin against the holy spirit means to not apply the teachings of God in our lives.
Which makes sense, God will forgive all sin as long as you listen and act on what the holy spirit allows us to learn.

I'm a recovering addict so I've had a pretty steady belief in God. However, with all the negativity around religion, I've needed someone like Dr. Petterson to show me how and why that's a great thing.

@@perrythefatcat Religion is simply the means by which you facilitate that relationship. Your habitual structure surrounding the relationship you have. It is not in itself valuable, except that it is a tool for relationship with God. Similar to a weekly date night with your spouse. It in itself is not the relationship, but is a tool that can contribute if used properly.

Unless theism has suddenly adopted a new definition then it's still a disbelief in a god or gods.
Because theism is an assumption about the truth of reality. We call it a-thiesm because we do not find those assumptions to be true, or at the very least we find the evidence put forth to be lacking in such a way as to looked upon with scepticism.
No formal religion has ever presented me with concrete irrefutable evidence of it's validity, instead using the con-man's age old go to of "just believe me".

agreed steve, it seems peterson is taking religion and re-packaging it to be absorbed for the series of stories that it really is, without the mumbo jumbo. i'm totally enjoying the work and his perspectives... the way all the mythologies align up and work together over thousands of years just makes me want to learn more about history and psychology.

Watching for the first time in 2020 (well, listening to the audio version). Having a conversation with a guy on reddit that says “everything he (JBP) says is bullshit”. Trying to square that circle with what I’m hearing. It says that there’s at least one person out there that has heard what he has said, but hasn’t thought about it at all - outside of the preconceived prejudices that are already held. There’s way too much in here to unpack and dismiss with the single word - bullshit. It’s just not that simple. As JBP would say - No! Wrong! That’s not a very sophisticated argument. It’s way more complicated than that.

What exactly did we prove ?
Hi Kevin. Did you go to the website I posted. We show that the worlds interpretation of the bible is wrong. This of course is based on the creation story. If the creation is interpreted wrong then the world isn't understanding the book properly. If they have creation wrong then they have nearly the whole bible wrong. We say, we've got it right and they have it wrong. But, don't take our word for it, you have to take a look at it and determine if we're correct. If we are correct then religions come to and end, because "if" the clergy are under divine guidance or divine revelations as they claim, that can't be true. If they are operating their religion via divine guidance they should have known about this alternative interpretation, which that didn't, meaning religions cannot be true. This would be proof would it not. Being they have it wrong means that religions are bogus. We found that biblical creation is not a matter of a material universe. Creation is a psychological construction, that means it's a description of a person using material objects and animal references that make up everyone's person, or mentality. This does not mean that the book has no meaning, it just means the the book is about something else then previously understood. For better explanation go to the website for a better understanding. humans have two sides to their brains. we think and we feel. I would say we know feelings exist. discounting the reality emotions create in our existence I contend discounts our existence. without feelings right and wrong don't exist. if an action feels wrong, it IS wrong, to you. assuming you control what you perceive as right and wrong isn't functional, because you would have to hold that you only act on things that are rational. this is obviously false in every fact of existence and in almost every action we take. you can provide rational explanations for them post hoc, but in the moment that you act you are engaging in more than a deterministic joust with reality.

This statement would prove its worth during funerals... people lose their minds when loved ones pass on. I have always saw the real beauty in death. I guess because I believe you go to a better place. The wisdom is that if we have the belief that there is more to life than just tragedy and that all pain and suffering in tragedy will pass and if we act honorable, we will be better for the tragedy.

Me too. I had very gentle, very learned Dominicans in high school, and the same in multinational profs in my undergrad. But I didn't understand what they were teaching me. I was just too young and silly 😁
But he is one in a generation(s). Even really purposeful teachers can't all be an Einstein. That's what he is. A true gift from God.

Incredible series of lectures. I was an atheist, didn't understand our ancestors' belives and called them stupid superstitions. Then I had some kind of religious experience and, wow, understood that my worldview was pretty limited, I started trying to understand what our ancestors thought about that, but couldn't understand all of that metaphors. And now I get it, thanks to this fascinating lectures, because I'm pretty scientific - minded person, and it's hard for me to take leaps of faith, and it's so cool to have a scientist explaining all of that in a language I understand and respect. Professor, you are doing an unimaginably important work, thanks for that from all my heart. Sorry for mistakes - English isn't my native language

The biggest problem with atheism is that it puts the concept of God in a box so that you cannot explore and search for the revelation of what God is on your own. The great philosophers and scientists (including Einstein) didn't lock the definition of God this way. But today's new atheists are very particular, ensuring you cannot have a conversation exploring the idea of God where they don't control the definition, the characteristics, the history, the dogma of what God is. What I love about Peterson is that he brings back to the conversation that God transcends our "factual" fixations. Truth is alive and comes in Metaphor.
I think I'm still an atheist, In that, I'm not going to start asking the sky daddy for favours. But I have more respect for him as an archetype and the other stories. I'm calling myself a Cultural Christian.

Absolutely true!! I suffer a lot less than some people who are truly always suffering, but my intense low back pain and sciatica from spinal surgeries always remind me of our limitations and frailties as human beings. Instead of being angry about it, it humbles me to pray for healing and to be thankful for all the blessings I have in my life. God could have made us zombies who were perfect, but instead, we are flawed by the original sin and I feel that this does give us the choice to follow Him as we are tested daily. That quote is fascinating and it truly is such a mystery why He created things with limitations.

You can see exactly where the romans eradicated any semblance of truth from the gnostics pagans and early christians/ hebrew/ kabbalistic texts before they enacted their reign via religious prowess.
The same can be said for mormanism. You can trace their roots, see how they stole from masons and other sources, and can see the utter nonsense of it.

Who would have ever thought that a psychologist interpreting the bible through a psychological lense would help so many to see the complex yet majestic gift that we have been blessed with, when we were given these biblical stories.
Even in our narcissistic and self involved world, these interpretations show that the Bible is a comedy book with something for every situation you face in life.
I studied these lectures up until the Abrahamic stories on and off for one year. Now I'm returning to this corpus to refresh and make crystalline the notions and conceptualizations that have been propagated. Thank you Jordan, these lectures are extremely grounding and profound. The topics that you illuminate and present whilst guiding the crowd through your imagination are life changing. The word "impact" would be an understatement regarding the grand-scale affects of this series. Thank you!

You’re Bible lectures are helping me find a way forward again, after years of going off the beaten path. You’ve provided enough evidence for me to understand that I have an intrinsic value with a structural base- rooted in the creation story, that has a cultural and historical nature- which is a constant. I used to believe in my own soul and then I lost that belief as my trust became broken again and again. Eventually (and as you stated here will happen in these cases) I lost the axiom of trust as a principle in my own life, which rocked my entire foundation and threw me into eternal chaos. I used to believe that people were naturally good, or at least suspected it, but then I lost that belief and nothing mattered to me anymore. I never knew where I was or WHO I was . . . or who I was talking to.
I’m not coming to understand that there IS actually a driving force in every human being to life in, and work TOWARDS the light. As a consequence, I can begin to rebuild my foundation with the understanding that truth is an inevitable fact- like God- and that I can live in a way that speaks to my purpose as such. It gives me the permission I’ve needed to be my authentic self. I can use my talents keeping this in mind, and live in a way that offers me some kind of solace at the end of the day . . . and go to bed KNOWING that I am using my life as a vessel for good in the world. Thanks for that ❤️💫

I've been studying the Bible for 25 years. I love hearing such detailed and analytical impressions from someone who has not necessarily professed an absolute belief in the existence of a supreme deity.
I find it memorable to hear him say, "I did not say I believe in God, but rather that I act as though he existed". To practice this widely, would transform the world, and then perhaps, people could debate at a later date, whether or not they felt God was real or not!

Everything he does is Christ centric, but he is talking to different people by doing it in those different formats. It's smart, I think it's cool.
For instance people who atheistically discriminate against these types of videos, but watch politics will watch him there - and the message is the same. So they will end up here when they have watched a lot of them.

Carl Jung talked about that the God "problem" must be answered in this life time. To deny God will lead to suffering.
Of course, after years of trying to understand myself. Until I was face to face with the prospect of death did I finally find a value within. On that day a memory from back in 2017 when I watched this popped into my head. I realized right then that Peterson was right. The Bible was written as a very complex and articulate piece about the conscious experience. About all one would encounter in life. It was only through the prospect of death that I became aware of my own being. Everything I knew and had ever done or learned. At that moment I was naked. Bit the apple which was to fall in love with a girl so misguided and misunderstood she ran in the face of fear while others took advantage of my nakedness to use against me. Life stripped me of everything to see who I truly am.
The Aspergers did nothing to help my attempted climb into the world. It's hindered it to a great deal and for that, I'm thankful. That way I was older and much wiser when the harshest realizations became clear.
The order out of chaos actually reminds me of quantum mechanics and the collapse of the wave function through the observation of the particle. An electron does not actually exist until it is confronted by consciousness. So another interpretation is that consciousness literally brings order out of chaotic potential. Reality does not actually exist until consciousness observes and brings order to it
It’s things like this, and the double slit experiment that leaves me to somewhat scoff at atheists who try to use “science” to support their belief.
I still love one of the most astounding explanations for the Big Bang that I’ve ever heard. From Steven Hawking. If I remember right, he basically said “The Big Bang happened, because it had to have happened.” The amount of things you have to take on faith to be an Atheist I think is even more than you need to believe in God.

I hazard to guess that his meaning was drawing a parallel between the effects of these different drugs. Opiods generally create a sense of docility, euphoria, and distracts the user from the vicissitudes of life. Meth makes you irrational, aggressive and is horrid for the body.

I started with Alan Watts in a very spiritual point in my life, but after that mind space collapsed I spent years in a wandering depression looking at the world without any spiritual or otherworldly lens - I became too science minded lol then I found this dude and it’s like discovering the innocent joy of spirituality all over again.

@@misssarahashplant31 i think im always going to be "soul searching" I've found new perspective and information that im learning to articulate. Like I always knew this perspective existed but hadnt done the studying to fully acknowledge it and certainly not articulate it this way.

@@visfor9355 While you're searching you might want to search for a description of Jesus Christ because the Bible does not tell us what he looked like. Christians call the Bible a work of literature but they don't mention the fact that there are no descriptions of what he looked like. Not a single word.
Every single piece of literature I have ever read describes the main characters so that the reader can create a mental image of him/her. Christians are worshipping someone when they don't even know what he looked like.

I dunno how I chanced upon JP on UA-cam about 3 years but my life has never been the same since. I personally have much to thank him for; my mind was rotting in a gutter back then and his lectures really helped me help myself.
On first hour of this video made me believe that I'm in the right place and time, because as much I'm religious I still love to learn and find out about new things from psychology or even philosophy or social life. Life has so much to offer and I say it at time where I'm walking into adult life. I'm grateful for finding you on UA-cam because you give me new perspective on life and new views on how to understand world around me and on end of the day we don't know everything and we will never know everything and as much it's a dramatic situation still it makes me feel like life is beautiful enough to search, learn and understand.
