When doing eyes, I have always done a base of black and then a white dot either side of the eye, quicker, easier and never had the issue of one eye looking at you, the other looking for you 🤷🏻♂️
OMG. This is a SUPER important message; "Dude, your model isn't nearly half as bad as you're afraid it is. Just fix the one thing that brings everything else around it down and look at it again.". You're good people, Casey.
One thing that really helped me was watching old colorized TV shows. The colorizers had to hand paint every cel, so the techniques used were the same ones we use on a regular basis.
I've found drawing in the iris with a .001 micron to be the absolute best for getting eyes that look where I want them. Usually on anything that small I just draw a line and then maybe fill out from the center of the line a little if it doesn't look like enough.
Thank you for this video I really needed it, on this day last year I found out I lost one of my best friends who actually played Space wolves. Thank you for making this bitter day a bit better I really appreciate it.
I don't know if this is a big deal for you or not, but it kinda is to me when I'm looking for older sculpts. The wolf backpack with a single banner pole was supplied with both Ulrik the Slayer and Njal Stormcaller, but Ragnar Blackmane originally had a two banner poles wolf backpack. Cheers!
It does bother me a little bit, and the newer model I got didn't have any poles. I swapped him for at least the one so I could use the paper flag. It's not perfect, but in terms of bringing him back to somewhat former glory I feel like it's getting the original intention of the model across, and I'm alright with that at least.
Painting skin (whether faces or other areas) is entirely dependent on the scale of the model. As a general rule for me (old school): 1. Paint a white base layer 2. Stipple random red 3. Thin lines of blue 4. Layer of translucent tan 5. Shading with a light brown wash 6. Selective red wash 7. Highlight with opaque peach/tan This method can give a lot of intricate detail and is really more useful on larger models. However, the basics of this method can still be applied to miniatures on the scale of Space Marines. What I love about this method is you can achieve a wide range of realistic skin tones just by varying the density of the individual layers.
MASTODON! Went to high school with Troy. He graduated a few years behind me. Great video! Look forward to your videos, mainly to help me rescue my models from myself, lol
Great video Casey. I have a full 2.5k Blood Angel army and have helmets on all my infantry and characters because I worry about painting a bad face that will spoil the model. Seeing the process via photoshop really helps too. Going to practise on the heads I have in my bits box this week.
I never do eyes. If I have to paint a face I usually use a base flesh color, in the past it was the old foundation, now I use bugmans glow. Then I give it a flesh wash, once dry I redo bugman and then move up to cadian. After that ill pick one higher level for spot highlights and done. I leave eyes shaded because its just easier to make it appear like the face is in shade. Also I like the new ragnar model better. More dynamic than that old single metal chunks pose.
My god this thumbnail looked like they used the mini as the palette itself and gloved it on like toothpaste and nailed it with the rest of the model being definitely table worthy
To safely and completely remove paint from metal or plastic miniatures try Fairy Powerspray, it's a general kitchen detergent and degreaser and it works like magic. Just put the mini in a plastic tub cover it with powerspray and leave it overnight. Next day you just wipe the paint off with a stiff brush, it just peels off no matter how old and encrusted the paint and primer is.
Goodness, that original face looked like Freddy Krueger! I'm getting better at faces over time, but eyes?? Um...well, I've got tiny pointy brushes and a magnifier, so I have no excuse to not paint them, now!
How to paint eyes like a boss: skip the pupils, and just glaze in a glow... Just don't skip detailing the division between the eyelids, and the eyes. Think early "Wolverine," from the X-Men cartoon...
My Faces are badly i never really trained it after a time trying so mostly my faces get a skincolour and thats for the most part a bit shadeing and the eyes filled in with a warm red when it fits the mini sometimes other colours fpr the eyes or even transform then into ghosts or undead
I don't do eyes on faces, I have a shaky hand when I paint the eyes on helmets so I pretty much just accept helmetless eyes being unfinished rather than look derpy. I just wish they would give every head Clint Eastwood squinting eyes so I don't even have to worry about it. In regards to painting faces in general, I have found Army painter speed paint or the speed paint medium (mixed with a different skin tone) has made this purpose much easier and usually follow it up with a light drybrush.
Best tip I ever got for painting eyes and getting them to look in the same direction was to start with the eye that corresponds to your dominant hand then move on to the other eye.
For those face-avoidant painters: try taking 5 or 10 bare heads and dedicating a whole afternoon or evening to them, and work one-by-one. You will see improvement by the end of the session, guaranteed, as long as follow some good painting guides. Turn that weakness into a strength and you will really feel proud.
Yeah. I'm the same way, But that's why I like Factions like Tau or Space Marines or Anyone that has Helmets. The only "Good" Faces I can do are Ogres but that's probably because of how big their faces are. I did do a cool trick that I like to do. I'd first do a small layer of White (Or any other) Color like Corax White on the face to get into the details like Teeth or eyeballs. Then I go over the face again with the skin color of my choice. It helps quite a lot with avoiding to paint white on the eyes for later
This used to be the bane of my fucking hobbY existence, until I started using army painters speed paints, which came out a recently. It’s not even a problem anymore it’s one of the easiest things to do no, which is insane.
I've been model making for 30 years and I've never found a good way to do faces. I have a disability that effects my hands, so I don't beat myself up over my painting anymore.

Honestly... Biggest tip for eyes. Don't do black and white eyes like this video suggests at 8:19 The problem with this method is real eyes don't look like this. It looks cartoony and will always make the eyes of your models look a little goofy. Look at how classic painters paint eyes on small figures. It's all about the suggestion of detail. So as a jumping off point. Shade the entire eye socket area with a shadowed flesh tone then mix that colour with white to give a suggestion of the white of the eye (no black. No raw white) for the pupil mix a dark tone (but not full black) Removing the stark black white contrast and keeping to roughly the tones we see at distance in real life makes a huge difference. But hey, it's your model do what you want hahaha.
