Yes. Doing in-depth tutorials on different materials/part are a life saver. instead of trying to find certain aspects of a long video and then having to replay that over and over while painting.
It's such an amazing thing to have such an array of "tutorials" to pick from. You can get something like " how to paint faces " by Jon, which is something that hits a wide range of use. Then you got Vincy V. with a tutorial on how to paint the big toenail on a Spacewolf's right foot during a Bloodmoon. Thanks for yet another amazing video with a lot to learn
I enjoy video that highlight ways to possibly conserve time in painting. The 30 minute face is the "best bang for your buck" so to speak. And pointing that out points at the best way to utilize my time painting, especially when army painting and not display or competition painting.
Definitely prefer these videos, because these are the ones that will actually make me paint better- as opposed to other painting videos where you just watch someone paint with zero direction on how to replicate the end goal.
Definitely would like more in-depth painting videos. Gear reviews and such a good filler, but videos like this and especially your diorama themed videos are what really keeps me coming back to watch 🤙
A fun video! If I could offer one suggestion; I'd have a section of the 3 heads, in their finished state, at the very beginning of the video and ask the audience to choose A, B or C on which is which. Then proceed with the painting steps / instruction. This way your audience is then vested into seeing if they were right. You might get a few more people watching until the end that way.
Seriously, why does he outright refuse to credit the music he uses? He's never creditied any music artists in his videos and I think that's grossly egotistical towards the artists and of course those viewers that want to know the songs.
These kind of videos are my absolute favorites of yours. I love hearing your thoughts and seeing your process on painting something, it really helps me to think through the painting decisions I make when I am working on something similar.
Yes, definitely more of these kinds of videos. I’m excited to try this out and I never thought of using such a range of colours to get the final result.
I enjoyed your video greatly. Having recently returned to painting after a good amount of time I am trying to learn new ways of doing my models, I noticed many painters are using techniques which either dinnae exist or more likely were not publicly shared in the past. Watching you do faces in several different time limits was extremely helpful. Any chance you could do a video on bare hands, gloved hands or any other type of hands?
Fantastic video! Id really like you to do more of these with different skin tones because while the steps may be the same, the color choices would be different. I'm working on improving my ability to paint dark skin tones now and there is so much variation in color choice that impacts the final result, I feel like it would be a rich topic for you to explore. Anyway, as always great work!
Very much appreciate the tips and ideas. We are taught in traditional portrait painting that the face can be looked at primarily in 3 colors to create that realistic skin effect: yellows in the forehead, reds in the cheeks, nose, and around the eyes (middle of face), and blue for the bottom. What you show here makes sense.
I haven't painted a face in over a year, and watching this video has me pumped to challenge myself with a few over the weekend! I'd love to see more videos like this -- maybe even more face vids diving into different skin tones and female faces.
I really enjoyed this video, not for the deep dive specifically, but rather highlighting how much can be done with some forethought prior to setting out. The 30 minute face looks awesome, and even for 10 minutes is clean. Knowing how you decided to adjust the process to the "errors" that happened provided a lot of insight to higher level painting skills such as color mixing on the fly and adjusting saturation and contrast.
I'm in love with the fact that there's now a miniature painting tutorial for how to contour. also that's way better than I can contour my own face in ten minutes
I didn’t paint warhammer or minis for that matter but I do paint 1/35 figures for traditional scalemodeling so I always love to see these type of videos! I really struggle with faces so I need all the help I can get
I love these tutorials. The fact you are willing to dive into the weeds on these things absolutely is amazing, and the technical details isn't really easy to find in a lot of places. The only other places you can find these sorts of videos are from scale models who make tanks, planes, railroads and military models
As someone just starting my second year in the hobby I love videos like this! Seeing the details and the steps at 3 different timeframes is really helpful. Thank you.
I would love to see more videos like this! I think that 30 min face is really the sweet spot. I wouldn't mind seeing another one of these with other types of skin tones (black, Asian, middle eastern, etc).
I second this, and as someone who is doing Alpha Legion I would also appreciate somebody who's deathly pale. A good tutorial on how to do that Raven guard, walking corpse look.
I’m getting back into the hobby now in my late 30s after dabbling in it as a teen, and I absolutely appreciate these detailed videos. Hobby time is a precious resource for me so understanding best practices and where to spend my time improving in the hobby goes a long way. Also , this type of video will be timeless because someone can look back years from now to find it and still get lots of useful information and your experience on the topic.
I think your right there is a minimal difference between 30 and 60 min version. I'm not a competitive painter, but I do still Glean some knowledge on painting faces from it. Oh, and your soundtrack has a little 80's vibe in it which I love.
I like having more in depth videos about specific parts. It helps with learning how light interacts with different shapes, especially when there’s so many different shapes in a small area like faces.
Good video. 1) Across a 3 foot or more gap, I probably cannot see much difference between the 3 heads. 2) At around a foot I probably can, and it is at this distance that I'm going to notice things like eyes not being painted. 3) Washes are your friend for speed. Don't slather them, paint them more like a heavy glaze. This method looks like it works well with your current underpainting approach to minis, but I'd like to see it tackled on a model with fair skin and light towards white as the dominant.
I have always hated painting faces always chosen to give models a helmet instead. Took the plunge today after seeing this video a couple months ago, did I start small or did I go straight for Bobby G? I love this technique for painting faces, Bobby Gs noggin came out brilliantly. It is the only time I have ever been happy with a face I've painted ever any other time its been that'll do. So thank you Ninjon
Good one, thanks. I think the 30 minutes one has the most expression ( not only because of the design but because it's a bit "harsher" painted ), would definitely go for that!
I have been just worrying about painting the faces on a couple of models I really like. This video has really helped me better shape a plan in my head. Thanks!!!
I literally found your channel less than a day ago. I don't paint miniatures and don't exactly plan on doing it any time soon or ever for that matter. But your videos are high quality, entertaining and i rather enjoy the short and straight to the point format. As i said, i don't do miniatures but i still feel that i learned something. Love the content, keep doing what you do.
These are my favorite types of videos. I like when there is a focus on one skill/section. I like the self contained nature of this so I can save it as a reference to come back to.
I really enjoyed this tutorial. Painting faces is... one reason my army mostly wears helmets. I know I'll get hate for this, but I'd like to see a tutorial on painting a race like the Tau. I'm sure the principles are the same, but after that, I'm at a loss. And I like the deep dives into a small part like a head. The extra detail helps a lot.
“Bases and faces” will enhance even the most basic paint job. On a separate note, the 10 minute face still looks awesome, and I’m wondering if there’s really any need for the 60 minute over the 30 minute other than for display/competition? I have quite a few spare bare heads as I always use the helmet option on EVERYTHING! But after this video I’ll give some faces a go
Wow.. as much as I've really liked a lot of your content, this is perhaps one of your most useful videos ever... I'm literally going back to my paint station tonight and going to work on faces in a whole new light... thank you. And yes, more occassional videos like this would be fantastic.
Id like more content like this Ninjon. Painting the eyes for table top is a personal choice, thank you for saying so. Maybe cover techniques to define the eyes, without painting the whites, iris, lens.... Also, as an aircraft mechanic, i see loads of different coloes of bare metal. I try to emulate that on my figures. But many folks have never seen a naked jet engine. Maybe show how to paint different colors of metal that isnt "lead belcher/nuln oil"....i wouldn't have said anything, but you asked. 👍❤️
Thank you very much for the tutorial videos. They're very helpful. Mixing in humor helps hold my attention. I'm currently trying to up my skin tone skill so this is perfect.
I love watching you paint and I think this video is particularly good because you are teaching me something new. That being said I appreciate that it isn't always possible to find a new technique or something else new for each video and I feel that it is important to say that sometimes the best videos for me are watching someone just painting and letting us follow the process.
I completely agree that it seems that the 30 minute Face looks great and there are diminishing returns going longer. The sculpt on that one is totally cooler too. Nice tutorial👊😀👍
This is great Mr. Ninjon! I actually stopped the vid at the point where you show the finished 60min and 30min faces and they are IDENTICAL! Fantastic work. I (like so many mini painters) are rubbish at painting faces. This a boon my friend. Cheers from across The Pond.
This was a great video. I love seeing the technique, I love the fact that it was an experiment where you got to do some theory crafting then we got to watch you apply the things you were talking about. I have been prepping to make a serious attempt at faces and this video crammed so much into a short amount of time it was the best video on the subject that I’ve watched so far.
Jon, I like the in-depth tutorials. I especially like videos like this where you can better weigh the time vs effort for a task and find what's "good enough" for you.
I have always been a 10 min face guy, but I see now the difference another 20 min can make. I’m definitely going to slow my roll a bit. I picked up some great tips for hair. That’s what I’ve really been missing. Thanks bro!
I honestly think the 10 min face is more than enough. Like you said, unless you are going for an award, I can't see putting that much more effort into them. Good video, I like the idea of doing more vids like this focusing in on various bits like this.
I guess having time limits is like figure drawing, you're going to focus on the important gestures when the clock is ticking, and sometimes having more time gives worse result because you relax and slow down... until the timer hits zero and you're only half way done.
Dig into that nitty-gritty baby! This is where it's at for me! So guys, if someone might want to have a play around at painting faces, which is the best GW set to choose? Heck, even a non-GW set? I'm thinking top quality sculpts, obviously, but something with several head designs and not a huge kit of 150 soldiers. Thoughts?
I always find some take away from your videos, regardless of the specific subject, but this one in particular was really insightful. Especially where you mentioned returning to the painting table after a break - I thought it was just me. I would love to see something like this for monochromatic paint schemes as I searched high and low to no avail recently. Keep up the great work!
More of these in-depth tutorial / time-challenge / comparisons and critiques in the future would be very welcome Jon! Love this kind of content and your approach in particular is always fun and entertaining.
I might have to give this method a try. I've always gone pretty simplistic with faces, with a basecoat of Bugman's Glow, a layer of Cadian Fleshtone, shade of Reikland Fleshshade, and then highlights of Cadian Fleshtone and Kislev Flesh. Doesn't look anywhere near as good as yours though.
I do like this format. Maybe how to add textures like weave leather metal scratches all sorts of them on different materials you come across in miniature painting. What do you use. Little lines cross hatches dots. 😊
This type of video is TOTALLY worth it and interesting and always helpful! RE: which one is better, the 30min is really great, I don't know if its just the sculpt or what. Maybe paint that same sculpt in 1 hour and compare again?
Thank you so much for doing this video!!! I’ve had a difficult time explaining to a couple of friends that the names are Germanic and being pronounced incorrectly, even on the show!!! Again, thank you so much!!! ❤
A big thumbs up for more videos like this, please! I think I'm finally getting to a point where I'm learning about glazing with a medium, a nice brush, stuff like that. Yes. Doing in-depth tutorials on different materials/part are a life saver. instead of trying to find certain aspects of a long video and then having to replay that over and over while painting.
The status face from Wolfenstein look is a win for me.
videos like this are very helpful to the beginning painter. Good for understanding lighting and the transition from the bottom of the face to the top.
It's such an amazing thing to have such an array of "tutorials" to pick from.

Thanks
As someone just starting my second year in the hobby I love videos like this! Seeing the details and the steps at 3 different timeframes is really helpful. Thank you.
I just started painting miniatures, 28mm, and your videos have helped a lot! Not just these tutorials, but also your videos on gear.

Yes! These tutorials are what I love the best. I have to say, I'm loving the 30 minute one the best. You are amazing, thank you!
Faces have always been a problem for me, and it helps to see someone break it down into steps like you have in this video.
I love this. Thank you. I'm gonna use this today. Wasn't even gonna paint today. Just feeling inspired to slay the grey.
These are my favorite types of videos. I like when there is a focus on one skill/section. I like the self contained nature of this so I can save it as a reference to come back to.

More of this. I think this is where you really shine.
I love that type of comparisons and in depth tutorials
I like the more detailed video that focuses on just one thing. Thank you.
A+ on the music choice in this one. Perfect face painting music.

Excellent. There are many generalized videos on miniature painting but I find ones like this one really help me grow as a painter. Keep them coming

imo the best way to paint faces is to choose the helmet options 😂
All the faces work on screen but in hand I am sure the differences are noticeable! Paint eyes unless they are table top! great job!
luv the vid , gave me some confidence to paint faces in a more controlled way other than flesh color , wash and highlight.
Love this kind of in-depth tutorial. Also seeing which parts of the process you truncate versus the ones that are worth the time and effort.
I love Michigan Toy soldier! Best paint shop imo
Probably one of the best face painting videos on UA-cam
Love seeing this focus on one small area of painting. MOAR of these! 😀
Thank you Jon, I already repeated your video for the 30 minute head. More tutorials like this man. 👍
This was a great video. Yes please to more in-depth and specific videos!
Yes, this vid is awesome. I’d totally rewatch it next time I go do a face on a model too.
Yeah. I like these tutorials. Thanks a lot.
I have always been a 10 min face guy, but I see now the difference another 20 min can make. I’m definitely going to slow my roll a bit. I picked up some great tips for hair. That’s what I’ve really been missing. Thanks bro!

They all look fantastic!
Love this idea of focusing on single parts.
I honestly think the 10 min face is more than enough. Like you said, unless you are going for an award, I can't see putting that much more effort into them.
Good video, I like the idea of doing more vids like this focusing in on various bits like this.
Love the nitty gritty of specifics, Ninjon. That’s how I’ve learned to paint minis!
I really wish I understood how you are tapping highlights on without any effort and it just blends perfectly well.
I'm going to try to paint a face like this when I get the motivation to paint in the next week or so. Hopefully it turns out somewhat close lol.
I guess having time limits is like figure drawing, you're going to focus on the important gestures when the clock is ticking, and sometimes having more time gives worse result because you relax and slow down... until the timer hits zero and you're only half way done.

such a great video thanx a lot for your guidance and help...
I do like tutorials like this as it allows me to learn new things or get back to some basics that I've worked myself away from
Doing in depth painting is very helpful.
Painting Faces is so daunting, but the way you break this down, especially the paint mixes as you work your way up, make a lot of sense!
More of these in-depth tutorial / time-challenge / comparisons and critiques in the future would be very welcome Jon! Love this kind of content and your approach in particular is always fun and entertaining.
This was very useful as I am just starting on a big showcase model and these techniques will help alot
I love the nitty gritty detail videos. Great job.
Realy nice! Thank you❤
Great video, finally something right to the point, going to give it a try, faces always scared me a lot.
Dude so cool the way you paint and present techniques really helps to make new and older painters better at what we do.
Love the tutorial videos, especially the stuff we paint a lot of.
Thanks!
Thank you so much for doing this video!!! I’ve had a difficult time explaining to a couple of friends that the names are Germanic and being pronounced incorrectly, even on the show!!! Again, thank you so much!!! ❤
Loved the vid. The soundtrack was awesome. And the 30 minute head was definitely the best!
I like a good mix of in depth and overview. Keeps things fresh.
yessssss please more deep dives on specifics
Finally the face video I've been waiting for. Good tutorial Jon. Would like to see another vid on 10 (15) minute faces with a better plan.
Love the detail in this video, more like this please!
I just built a bunch of cadian boxes and needed a video like this!
A big thumbs up for more videos like this, please! I think I'm finally getting to a point where I'm learning about glazing with a medium, a nice brush, stuff like that. I'm all for more opportunities to learn something; a few days ago I had set myself the goal of being as good a painter like Vince Venturella, Scott or yourself, and I really want to push myself with each new model I'm painting. Finally, thank you for the content as always. It's bloody good stuff.
