it might be boring for you to watch while you edit, but sped up, i always enjoy watching you work. i always learn something new, i love how you explain stuff.
While I don't plan on ever entering into a Contest like Golden Daemon, as I only build and paint up Minis for the fun and passion of it, I do enjoy seeing stuff like this, and how awesome that Black Templar looks.
At first I had commented about the cool chair and that I wanted one. However, after seeing the finished paint job of that mini I had to erase that entire comment because that was some incredible inspiring work and normally I really don't enjoy Space Marines but this was so cool that I kinda want to paint one up.
I think he looks great and the background is inspired. It's easy to look at the super high level painters online and feel discouraged but you're absolutely right that we shouldn't let that stop us from getting stuck in. "The man in the arena..." and all that.
This video is relevant to me right now because one of the minis I intend upon entering into the contest at Reapercon this year ended up needing to be completely stripped and re-primed due to mold lines I'd not seen before, for one thing, and it also needed far more contrast and differing colors to elevate it higher. I'm both nervous and eager to start in on this project to see how I can make this mini that I painted to the best of my ability several years ago will look now after several years of practice and improvement. (It's Lord Tusk from Massive Darkness)
My only criticism would be I think you need to do something with the lenses on the helmet, they look a little flat and I personally think they need to pop about more, everything else looks absolutely stunning! Great work dude!
Man, KC, way to paint bravely! I've never done a display base before but this is really inspiring - especially because I just printed off 30 'Space Marines' to work on different color theory/technique - this might be a great way to show off anything that doesn't suck! 😅
I really like it. Its way better than i could do. As a very untalented novice, my only criticism is that the highlights on the armour, especially towards the top, back of the model seem disconnected from the very warm light behind. I feel like there would be some orange bouncing off the back of the model. It looks cold in comparison, but equally like he's under his own divine light 😇 The backdrop looks like it would work as the interior of a church lit by candle at night also.. with maybe slabs on the floor reflecting more candle light.. makes me want to try it!! Thankyou!
So one thing I've seen done to help "lift" the quality of a paint job for competition painting is to highlight the metals not with a lighter color but with a more reflective paint in the same tone and hue, some of the artist grade wax based paints are extremely reflective without being more de-saturated. So it can be a great trick if you can find one that matches the color of your silver or gold highlights to use as your extreme highlight.
Really well done, I also did a display piece and model for a competition. It was a space hulk terminator in a space hulk corridor. It turned out ok and the competition is next week.
So I dunno if you're open to some tips, but something that helped elevate my painting was magnifying glasses, I'm long sighted so I just wear 2 pairs of my glasses on top of each other and it makes whatever I'm looking at turn into massive super HD vision, I can see every detail Next I'd suggest getting getting some sable brushes, I use rosemary and Co brushes and the tips are soo sharp and accurate. I'm not sure what brushes you use but they look much thicker at the tip than mine I say this only because you're talking about trying to up your painting game, so this stuff helped for me, maybe it will help you too! Love your content regardless
Lovely work on the Display Base. I actually just entered my first "competition" it was just the turn in for Mini of the Month in our Local GW... well ended up chatting with many ppl and actually placed second wich made me very proud since i am not that fond into my painting skills
might need some details between the figure and the background ... kinda looks empty ... maybe extra rubble or collapsed building ... overall love the work ... gives me a few ideas for some space wolves ...
I really would like to try airbrush but ever since MS killed my restaurant skills I am broke. I also want to try contrast or express paints but still it is either basics or expensive paints. Love your videos because you always seem so relatable. Please keep putting up those videos !
It's a well done piece, but I feel like the sword, which in my eyes is the focal point of the model, was kind of left by the wayside. As far as I know, that sword is the Blade of Sigismund passed down each time a new champion is chosen, no? In that regard, it looks rather plain, still detailed of course but it's missing that legendariness I feel. If the aim was to pull the eyes away from the blade towards the body of the model then I would say, some more detail on the chestplate would go a long way, as the base chest is bare.
Hi Casey, great job on this latest update. Quick question, do you have any idea where you got the led desk lamp with the 2 bars of leds and the adustable arm? Saw it quite a few times in this video and it's pretty much what I've been looking for to add some light to my desk. Thanks!
Thanks! The lamp is the Redgrass R9, they sent me one to check out before the kickstarter a few months ago. It's a nice lamp, good color and adjustable brightness. Little pricey, but it's solid all around. www.redgrasscreative.com/redgrass-r9-desk-lamp/?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwzN-vBhAkEiwAYiO7oH9bRZBCh4zDqFKSCJA5b1u-3jxSBE_rAXx7iAbWHfynl-f2-bWNMBoCpkAQAvD_BwE
@@eBayMiniatureRescues thanks for the info and the link. I guess maybe a little expensive but it ticks a lot of the boxes I need so I think it's probably worth the money. Cheaper lamps just haven't cut it!
This was a wonderful video. It was very fun to sit and watch you step outside of your comfort zone and try a display piece! You are an excellent painter and I really enjoy your style, so naturally, it looks fantastic, and I really love the hazy background chapel you did there as the backdrop scene. To me it seems beautifully efficient and creates a great effect. Actually, watching you create it gave me an idea about how to use this method in crafting the pieces lighting. Id like to try myself, and I thought I'd share it: why not glaze something through the airbrush, maybe an oil, as the last layer in that background and then hit the mini itself with the same glaze/oil as the last step to really tie it to the background"? Also, I think it would be really fun to use the brightest acrylic color in the background in the mini's edge highlights or even employ it as a mother color? Anyway, your video was perfect, the piece looks great, and it really fired my creative interests! I learn a lot from your videos and as always, thanks for sharing it with us viewers!
I almost decided to put the converted Stormcast black templar on it instead....it looks so good on there lol I even went back and painted it for a while after filming, he's looking pretty nice, but I can't use both since there really isn't a category for 2 minis in Golden Demon, or at least I can't think of any that I could justify to the judges. Maybe the open category, but that isn't really where this would go either. I hope that's what you are referring to, otherwise, that's what's going on in my head lol.
I got the impression from watching this, you felt working on a golden deamon project was outside the conceot of eBay rescues? I think taking a resuce miniature up to this standard is well inside the intial concept. Just a testament of how far a rescue can go ;)
I've definitely had this goal in mind to win a painting competition using a rescued mini, something that was on the brink of being thrown away and just bringing it back to its full glory. The 'outside the concept' part for me is more about continuing to paint something to a higher standard when I've already made a video about that model. I don't normally do multi-part painting videos, so it's a struggle to try and justify not just doing a new model, if that makes sense. I was not going to make this video for that reason until I decided that was a dumb idea lol. So breaking out of my comfort zone and just doing the thing I actually wanted to do instead of making just another rescue video. Honestly, if I had the time to paint every rescue model to a much higher standard, or more specifically if I was skilled enough to do it in a shorter amount of time, I totally would :)
I don't think we care either way about seeing the same model again.. more if there is new processes or techniques to see, which you totally delivered here. Personally I don't even need to see rescues here. Whatever you want to paint and talk through is fine for me. I'm sure you would still do rescues from time to time even of your own volition anyway.
@@HomeDrone Thank you, that means a lot! I am definitely trying to push harder and just do the projects I think are fun, and I imagine that will translate into just making fun videos and talking hobby :)

Mostly liquitex, they tend to not get gummy and shoot through the airbrush nicer than others that I've used. Daler-Rowney is usually good, but not all of the colors work as well. Liquitex white is also basically the best white ink you can get right now.
