After listening to a lot of painters, the general rule of thumb is that 100 hours of work is the minimum to get an honorable mention, and 400 hours is the minimum to get a golden daemon.
I’ve met a lot of painters who have put in that kind of time, and it makes sense of you’re striving for perfection, personally, while I will be spending quite a lot of time on this model, I am not looking for perfection more than an excuse to push myself to get better. One of the biggest hurdles I face is putting in more time. I just don’t do it, so facing that and just painting more and more on this one model will be an experience all by itself. And it’s gonna be fun to put the mini in the case and hang out, so I’m looking forward to that :)
It’s nice. The light is all over the place though. You may want to consider the direction of the light source and ensure all the form modeling follows the direction of the light.
So I've seen someone do a spray of florescent orange over white oil paint in symbols before and it looked hot, you would probably want to do more than that for competition painting but I'm not quite sure where you would want to go from there on symbol glow rather than full on glowing sword.
I realize it's not done yet, but I'd really recommend you paint some more complex heraldry on the little shoulder shield: it's a major focal point of the model and it's supposed to be where heraldry is displayed, so just leaving it a basic red is a bit of a bad impression imo. I also noticed you didn't paint little details like the buckles on the boots, or the pipes in the armor joints a separate color... I'm guessing those will be more of a finishing touch. I'm loving the old, weathered look and the browned cloth though, he really does look like a badass veteran!
'little shoulder shield' = Besague. Could argue that it's a Tilting shield due to the shape, but they were for jousting, somewhat larger and would have a pronounced curve to deflect a Lance... OMFG, knowing that makes me a total nerd 😫I'm sorry, please don't hurt me!
@@Marconius6 If memory serves (should probably double check though) the Ecranche was not attached direct to the chest plate but more of a true off-hand shield, again specifically for jousting that would be held interlocked locked behind the vamplate of the lance. Kinda like a bigger improved tilting shield. Pretty much covered the entire left half of the body between the saddle and shoulder. I know this is really getting anal at this point and I'm getting deeper in this nerd hole and would happily stand corrected 😬 Could someone throw me a rope please, I didn't have enough carry capacity for my adventurers kit! As for being on the left... There were no left/right handed people back then, you were either right handed or you were the Devil! I blame living too close to the Royal Armourers for this useless knowledge 😅 Edit: I totally see the train of thought as historically Besague's were on both sides to protect the armour joints. I'm thinking poetic licence on this Templar being from the 41st millennia, but I really think this dude being mounted is just too far left field.
@@markwood9751 Well I'm not entirely sure on the naming, but in a lot of images I find there is a big shield covering the left shoulder, that often has heraldry on it. So I think the bit on the Space Marine is meant to resemble that, though it's actually a lot smaller.
really digging this so far! Always excited to see more longer projects - and to hear how the process differs between the two competitions you're planning on entering. (Assuming it's already in the plans, but somehow making that text on the little tilt shield constrast/pop a little more vs it's background colour would i think make that bit of detail really sing)

I have a pair of magnifiers too and they help so much. Not because I’m a great painter and need it for that perfect battle damage, but because I’m old and can’t see what I’m doing without them.
The Emperor's Champion is just a normal Black Templars Space Marine who had a vision and after testing and interviews he is given this special Armor. It is so special that after the battle the EC often dies and they go back to retrieve the Armor & Sword.
If I may give a suggestion, through out my military service I found that gloves I wore the fingertips wore out the fastest. Maybe some metallic scraps on his fingers tips to show he picks things up
If your going to “weather” it, you should also add in some claw marks, bullet holes and blast effects. The idea that he’s close courter combat makes sense he’d have some damage on him.

Damn it looks good. My next competition is a scifi one held by a hobby organisation in my country and I am planning to paint a Necron psychomancer. The last one the theme was Vikings and I entered a Valkyrie from Conquest Last Argument of Kings but I didn't pushed myself hard enough. For the Necron I am planning to go all out.

I know it's work-in-progress, but if you're open to constructive criticism, here are a few things that bug me for now: - first, the little red shield ... it's too far gone. Looks more like scrap metal from Ork Armor. - second, the contrast between the hands and what they are holding: On the right the leather on the sword handle needs to stand out more compared to the brown taint of the metal (maybe just reduce the brown on the metal pommel?). On the left, the chain of the rosarius needs more silver to contrast better against the fingers and their silver highlights (leave less black on the beads to give them a fuller body). Thumbs up and good luck for the competition!

i also think that dark toned sword looks better for the Emperor's Champion. It is - in fact - The Black Sword of Sigismund. The first Astartes that was nominated to rank of Emperor's Champion by Rogal Dorn himself.
I think it would help you to practice with other factions besides the Orks and the Empire. you would be forced to use color patterns that you are not used to
I have a few friends pretty close to me that play AOS and 40k, we get together and play games from time to time. Still, not nearly as often as I would like.

I like your channel a lot. There are many modeling and painting channels to choose from, but your channel has that certain something, that makes it stand out. I think your videos are more relatable to a wider audience.
I fear that the model itself isn't extravagant enough. Maybe something a tad bigger that has more parts. People love eye candy especially eye candy that has like 250 hrs put into it.
He is pretty plain by himself and definitely needs more stuff around. I'll be building a display base, and of course, putting in more hours so we'll see how much that does or doesn't help. Still, the goal is to push myself and see how far I can take it compared to normal. He will end up in the case in some sort of condition, not sure what yet though lol.
I dont know anything about painting and minis. But I honestly didnt like it. I think the sword lacks a good shining around the edge and some glooming light inside the gothic words. For me if I have to be completely honest It felt soulless in contrast with the stormcast conversion. I think there's something in that conversation that it wasnt added on this one. I would suggest that you revisit the stormcast.
I plan on going back to more of the Stormcast for conversions, I really like that one a lot. They work for Black Templars very well and there are a ton out there that would look great. I did go on to get a Finalist pin at Golden Demon with this model, it could have been better sure, but for the time spent and the goals I had it ended up doing much better than I anticipated, so that's a win. Not every model needs to be all the things, some models are stepping stones on the path of growth. I tried things and pushed aspects of my skills to make this entry, and that's enough for me.

I am find metallic paint should be the bottom coat or carefully used for more of a texture styling whish is more than just high lights.

If you are going for a display/competition level of painting. I would thin the paint you run through your airbrush more, to reduce the speckling.

Should the heat marks on the blade also focus around the chips in the blade itself since the metal is thinner there (due to the damage)?

i do prefer the darker sword on him, his weapon is known as the black sword, so being a bright and glowy may not be the best.
