Iommi actually had to tune his guitar lower. On his last day at the metal sheeting factory, he accidentally chopped off two fingertips on his right hand (Tony's left-handed) with a press. He fabricated some plastic tips from bottle-tops, but it was still too painful to play with regular string tension, so he tuned his guitar lower to make the tension less. It's what became the trademark guitar sound of Black Sabbath. Low, humming and menacing.

In April of 1974 I made the trip from San Diego to Ontario Motor Speedway in Riverside County. A few other 100K did as well. California Jam 1 was the West Coast Woodstock I remember it being referred to as. Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Rare Earth and the Eagles were just a few of the bands that performed, I don't feel that I can leave out Earth Wind and Fire as well. I got to see Black Sabbath shortly after in a San Diego show shortly after. Sabbath had a few mantras that I would vibe my life with lol

Cool that you've reacted to 5 out of the first 6 Sabbath albums!!! If you want a song from their 3rd album AND if you want to stick to the same "theme" as this song try "Sweet Leaf"!!! Of course, "Into The Void" and "Children of the Grave" are MUST DO's!!!!

When they wrote this song (1972) they had a $75,000 budget just for coke. They would get it flown in by private plane. Geezer Butler wrote the lyrics and admitted that the drug was the band's worst enemy.

Tony Iommi cut off some of his fingertips at work (age 17). in order to play guitar further he had to use thinner strings and turn the tension lower

I thought Toni de tuned his guitar mainly because of losing his fingertips and it hurt to play. As far as I know, that's how they got their sound. Still love it. Oh yea, they have another song talking about Vietnam vets coming back hooked on heroin, "Hand of Doom" which continues into "Rat Salad". You talk about a musical experience, this is it. Thanks again for the great reaction.

Ozzy is definitely struggling here with the guitars tuned to E standard instead of C sharp. I think the newer songs were tuned to a higher key.

Something you haven't noticed is that Tony Iommi is wearing some plastic tips on his fretting fingers. At the age of 17 he lost the tips of his middle & ring fingers in an industrial accident at a sheet metal factory. He had to make the guitar strings slacker to make it easier on the fingers. This kind of downtuning created the heavy sound that started a genre.

Sorry everbody here..Black Sabbath was a little too out there for me, but I do and always will appreciate their talent. Drugs were a big thing for many bands, as well as alcohol. I grew up with more easy listening music and some psychedelic. That's just where this 70 y.o.'s head is at. Great reaction to Ozzy and the band, Saeed. Thank you. Much love to you and your family ❤️ 🫂

🎉 Black Sabbath was always a little too HEAVY for me. That being said, Steppenwolf did a FANTASTIC song called “Snowblind Friend” (1970). They also did “The Pusher,” (1968) which was a Hoyt Axton cover (famous Country & Western singer/songwriter/guitarist/actor from the 60’s). What you need to know is: BOTH Steppenwolf songs got a LOT of airtime on the radio; Black Sabbath did not. “The Pusher” and “Snowblind Friend” are Classics that you NEEED to hear. The lyrics will touch you, my friend.

@@SaeedReacts. Lots of killer songs from Steppenwolf. The vocalist John Kay (Joachim Fritz Krauledat) was born in Tilsit in East Prussia, which is now Sovetsk in Russia, in 1944. At one his mother took him and fled as the Russian tanks rolled closer (his father had been killed a month before his birth). They ended up stranded in the Soviet controlled sector of Germany, but in 1949 were helped across the border to Hamburg. If they had been seen they would have been shot. In 1958 the family moved to Toronto. The song "Renegade" details that journey. I reckon you'd enjoyed that telling.
