You articulated the feelings perfectly that this song invokes, I think most people have no idea that Sabbath was capable of creating something like this. Ozzy didn't get together with Sharon until the early 80's after he was fired by Sabbath in 1979.

It was 79. Song was from 71. Bulter wrote it about Ward’s marriage. Also a strange fact. It was Sharron who recommended Ronnie James Dio to Tony Iommi.

Sabbath are very serious about their ballads. They aren't just throw-aways. Solitude was inspired by the band’s collective experiences with loneliness and the need for personal introspection. They sought to explore the profound emotional impact of solitude and how it can serve as a source of strength.

Wow another one..I heard it first when I bought the album Master Of Realty ..They usually have one very nice melodic tune on every album ..My mother really liked Laguna Sunrise instrumental when I played the Vol 4 album and she was not the kind to even realize it came from band with a perceived dark image until she looked at the cover and the shock of the bands name .. ''Spiral Architect''' that is a great one You Wont Change Me After Forever Never Say Die and Laguna Sunrise of course all really great ones ..

The flute part reminds me of the flute solo in the Moody Blues Nights in White Satin. Kind of evocative of a Celtic, Irish or Scottish old world of centuries past.Thank you for your reaction.

I was thinking about the flute and it was Tony Iommi the guitarist who played flute on this song as well as "Planet Caravan". Then I realized Tony left Black Sabbath (known as Earth) to play for Jethro Tull in 1968. Ian Anderson is the lead singer, (flautist) flutist for Jethro Tull. Tony brought some of that with him when he returned to Sabbath in 1969.

'Masters of Reality' was the first vinyl album I owned. I was 6 years in the mid 80s and my dad bought this for my birthday. Music has been a big thing - in all genres - in my family for generations, we're all musicians in some form. This album and the 'Black Sabbath' self-titled cassette I got at about the same time solidified my future as a musician, and continues to be one of the key factors in my very colorful life so far. Great reaction video, I love that the music took you somewhere despite recording! Keep inspiring! This is a great way for the younger generations to be exposed to great stuff from earlier days.

'Solitude' was on Black Sabbath's 1971 album 'Master of Reality'... this was years before Sabbath and Ozzy were managed by Don Arden, whose daughter Sharon Arden worked in her father's offices. I believe Ozzy first met Sharon in 1970 (?) when he was still married to his first wife Thelma... Sharon recalled Ozzy showed up w/ a faucet around his neck as jewelry at her dad's office and 'scared the hell' out of her... Apparently, Ozzy was so rude that she almost refused to serve him tea at the first meeting... However, after a few more meetings by 1974/ '75, Sharon found him funny and charming... She acted as one of Black Sabbath's handlers, i.e. the members would go to her if they needed something from management. Ozzy would often come to her and confide in her when things were breaking down...
Sharon did admit that in 1979, things were not good between the band members and when they couldn't write any new music that was up to their standards, Tony Iommi (guitar) asked Sharon if she could get them a new singer... At that time, Sharon was friends w/ Wendy Dio and knew her husband Ronnie James Dio had just been fired as the singer of Rainbow; she admitted setting up a meeting between Tony and Ronnie ... It came as no surprise that Tony Iommi enjoyed working w/ Dio and made the decision to fire Ozzy from Black Sabbath and made drummer Bill Ward give the Ozzy the news... Sabbath's managers insisted that Ozzy stay in Sabbath but Tony Iommi didn't care - Ronnie James Dio was going to be the new singer in Black Sabbath.
A few months after Ozzy was fired, Sharon went to see Ozzy to collect a loan from a mutual friend... but Ozzy was broke, separated from his wife and family, and living in this hotel room in L.A. doing drugs and booze... She freaked out but Ozzy made her laugh and looked so lost and desperate that Sharon couldn't help feel for him... So, she opted to manage Ozzy against her father's wishes. She knew he had talent and was a great entertainer... he just needed the right people to get him where he needed to be musically and arranged auditions for his solo band in 1980.
Of course, when Ozzy found out that Ronnie James Dio was the singer of Black Sabbath, he was crushed and hated his replacement... Sharon managed Ozzy at the point and that ended her friendship w/ Wendy Dio... When Ozzy's first 2 solo albums sold platinum in 1981, Sharon was shocked that her dad Don Arden was taking all of Ozzy's royalties to pay off his debt... She tried to reason w/ her dad but according to Sharon, her dad unleashed his pet dogs on her at one point.
Initially, Sharon refused Ozzy advances... she knew he had a thing for her early on, but he was married and had kids... Her impression of his wife became negative when Ozzy did his first solo concert w/ his new band... As Ozzy took the stage, she cheered him on to give him encouragement, his wife Thelma pulled her hands down and demanded she not do that.
Sharon mortgaged her house to pay for Ozzy's tour startup costs in 1980/ '81 and money was tight... they only made what promoters paid them on tour... Ozzy's star was on the rise and shows were selling out very quickly. Sharon claimed that one night after a good show, she and Ozzy got wasted and had sex... Still, Ozzy was reluctant to leave his wife and kids... He and Sharon would also get into volatile fights... Finally, Thelma had enough after finding out about Ozzy and Sharon and demanded a divorce... Sharon also left her father's employ to start her own management team for Ozzy's solo career... She said that she left home w/ 1 suitcase, while Ozzy was given one plastic bag by his wife. They had no money and spent their lives on a tour bus from 1981 to 1983. The little money made was spent on lawyers trying to break Ozzy's contract w/ Don Arden.
Sharon and Ozzy got engaged by 1982 but kept fighting... she admitted to sleeping w/ his band's guitarist Randy Rhoads after she caught Ozzy cheating on her... Unfortunately, Randy Rhoads was killed in Spring of 1982 in a small engine plane crash and both Ozzy and Sharon were devastated.
Ozzy had to hire a new guitarist to finish the tour in '82 and Sharon was so traumatized that she couldn't watch Ozzy perform without guitarist Randy Rhoads or listen to his first 2 records for months.
In the Summer of '82, Ozzy and Sharon finally got married in Hawaii... Don Arden attended but things were not good between him and Sharon. They wouldn't speak to each other again for decades. Ozzy was drunk at the wedding... nobody would eat his wedding cake cos it was loaded w/ booze... And Ozzy was found passed out on his wedding night.
Their daughter Aimee Osbourne was born in 1983 and spent her toddler years on Ozzy and Sharon's tour bus because they still couldn't afford a home. Finally, Ozzy was free of his contracts and was able to gain financial independence by 1984 as his solo career exploded.

Great reaction!! I couldn't believe this was Sabbath on first hearing it, but this was the first full album of theirs that I heard (prior was just a compilation album - which had the much heavier stuff). I soon came to know their catalogue and realized this was one of their special tracks - unique & beautiful! Still one of my favourites.
This was about 7 years before Sharon & Ozzy hooked up. Cheers!

mostly i was thinking about how people feel so much love and sadness when someone leaves them, but when they still have them, they dont feel as strongly about them, and want some time for themselves.. and then when theyre gone, they feel sorry for themself, and have to cry a song, and try to sooth themself, or get some empathy from anyone.. so i was starting to wonder, does a person really love that person so much, or do they just love themself

@@MrJeddYoung or they may just love what that other person makes them feel, and what they get from them.. you know how fast someones love can turn to hate, when they dont get their love anymore from them, or feel betrayed.. about a half a second.. and then what are they thinking.. how theyv lost all these things that other person gave them.. well, i guess it boils down to a person is what they do really.. soon as they stop, they might as well be another person.. speaking of which, its also common that after losing someone, a person can feel like they lost a part of themselves.. so again, its usually just about you

no apologies necessary for drifting off, maddy. that soft low bass just lulls you into like a weightless plane of existence, then the tribal sounding flute pulls you straight into an alternate state of consciousness. great reaction. 👍

Ozzy was married to Thelma Riley when this album came out in 1971. The lyrics were usually collaborative between Geezer Butler and Ozzy Osbourne. It's Tony Iommi who plays guitar, flute & piano on the recording.

You might want to listen to this version of a friend of mine. He makes his own music, but occasionally does do covers. He learned this song by ear, played all the instruments... and his vocals, in my opinion, go along so well with the spirit of this Black Sabbath song... I think your summary, that it makes one being reflective is very true. Greatly phrased, what you said about it. Actually, i did not realise it consciously, but when you said it, it was like 'yes, exactly!'.

Tony Iommi supposedly learned the flute from Ian Anderson during his time as guitarist of Jethro Tull, they apparently didn't get along, too many alphas I guess, lol. Sharon and Ozzy didn't meet until her father started managing Black Sabbath, right before they fired him.
