In Iommi's autobiography called "Iron Man", he states that they tried to get at least one slower song on each album. My personal favorite would be Solitude from their 3rd album.
Goes to show once again, that you can't judge a book by it's cover. Glad both of you liked this side of Sabbath. Great reaction once again. Symptom of the Universe should be your next song, it's going to blow you away.
Black Sabbath Vol 4. Is My favorite album of all times it always annoys me when people say this ruins a perfect album. It 1 trillion % does not this song is so good and beautiful the ones who dislike it must not like Ozzys voice because I wouldn't change this for the world. It flows perfectly with the album. Only a heartless ding dong wouldn't absolutely adore this.
Now you have to listen and react to "Planet Caravan". I have declared sabbath as the greatest band ever for 40 years. Trust me coach, you will love it. The rhythm section is the best🤩The percussion and bass will hook you and you will listen to it many times.
More greatness from the master musician, Tony Iommi, who wrote the music and is playing the piano. He is also an accomplished flute player. If you're singing about love going astray, and explicitly saying "she was my woman", you're not talking about your mother!
@@CoachCastTV Lead guitarist (and flute and piano player) Tony Iommi (eye-OWE-me) is a creative genius who is generally credited with not only invented metal, but several subgenres as well. For example, Symptom of the Universe (1975!) is widely credited as being the beginning of thrash, and Sweet Leaf (1971!), is often credited with being the beginning of stoner metal. Each album generally had one slower song like this to break things up. His music writing approach, he said, was to try to create the same feeling you get when listening to dramatic classical music. The great lyrics were usually written by the great bass player, Geezer (Terry) Butler. Iommi and Butler together were in my opinion the greatest songwriting team ever, and had incredibly chemistry when playing together. And all of this was with Iommi missing the tips of his two middle fingers on his fretting hand from a factory accident on his last day of work. I strongly suggest you check out a lyric video to Symptom of the Universe. The lyrics resulted from an acid-fueled dream Butler had that he turned into a sort of cosmic love song. The music from Iommi on that one was groundbreaking.
Song was about Bill Wards wife, whom he was breaking up with at the time, and Ozzy helped with the lyrics, while Geezer and Iomi were experimenting with new keyboards for the time
Wait until you react to "Planet Caravan" also a ballad but it is definitely the Black Sabbath sound. Then another suggestion I have for you if you haven't already is "Behind the Wall of Sleep" from their debut album. It's classic! Awesome reaction!
That was the thing, you never knew what was coming next - be it It's Alright, Air Dance, Solitude, Planet Caravan or The Writ. For me Sabbath stand alone. The song is about Bill's marriage failing. Tony on piano, Geezer on mellotron.
@@CoachCastTV you would never guess that is a black sabbath song if it weren't for ozzy's vocals. She's gone is pure feeling. Appreciate your content!!
Tony Iommi, was the lead guitar for Black Sabbath and considered a great guitarist. BUT I have 4 guitarists and 2 bassists that I think are on another level. They are Miyako & Modri W/ Fami bassist in Lovebites suggested song The Awakening "Hammer of Wrath" live. Next Saki & Hazuki W/ Haraguchi-san Bassist in Nemophila suggested song "Seize the Fate" live. Look closely at Saki and Hazuki guitars, they're different. Right after the guitarists knock you over the singers and drummers will knock you over all over again. Don't wait too long.
I started listening to Sabbath in 1970 and the first of their albums I bought was Master of Reality, released in 1971 . It had a great ballad called “ Solitude “…. “Changes “ is off Vol 4 which came out in 1972 , so it wasnt unexpected for Sabbath at the time ….Vol 4 also had the great instrumental “Laguna Sunrise” …and Bill Ward sings” It’s Alright “ off 1976’s Technical Ecstasy album , definitely a ballad feel . “ Changes “ has been covered by many bands-the Cardigans, for one - and by soul singer Charles Bradley in 2013 .
Toni Iommi found a piano on the studio when they were working on the album, he and bassist Geezer Butler play the piano and mellotron (yes, there is no strings) well done again, please react to Spiral Architect and Wheels of Confussion
I think i have hear this song somewhere. Maybe at my father place. I love your channel, the culture and atmosphere you cultivate here. So positive and fun. This was interessing to find a song i hear ages ago.I only klicked because it said ballad.
Ohhh Ozzy absolutely does have a unique voice! Loved him for decades! In fact my home screen on my phone is Ozzy at White Sands in New Mexico when he and Jack had their tv show called Ozzy and Jacks World Detour. Didn’t love their other tv show. Anyway during that Detour Show their photographer showed up and WOW those pictures r absolutely stunning! Ok back to the music- Ozzy/Black Sabbath is a huge part of the soundtrack of my life. Glad y’all liked it😍
It's Tony on piano, and the song is about Bill Ward's breakup and eventual divorce from his first wife. For contrast you really need to listen to "Symptom of the Universe" and "Megalomania" from their 1975 Sabotage album. Keep enjoying the rabbit hole 😊
For me this is just Black Sabbath. I first heard this so long ago that I don't remember the event, and it's just part of their library. I do remember that the other bands I was also listening to at that time(Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, ect) also had ballads. I believe it was Tony Iommi who was playing the piano, he also did synths I think. The song was written by all 4 band members about marital breakup, and I've never seen anything mentioned about a specific person or couple. It's a great song, epic band. Nice one to react with....it always reminds me of Judas Priests song 'Victim of Changes'...also an older song from their very early days.
Great comment and thanks for more info about the song. It's a departure of sorts from what we expected from them, but they did it well. Props to them. This band is truly talented.
Really not was I was expecting! Great vocals! It shows just how good Ozzie's voice is when he's not yelling his lyrics! It has the feeling of a lament. I love it - particularly the echoey effect during the 'I'm going through changes' chorus. I don't know, since I've never heard it before, but I'm thinking it might be about the changes he went through when he fell for Sharon, while still married to his first wife, Thelma... and then married Sharon very quickly after his divorce from Thelma was finalised.
Please also listen to other cool songs of the early sabbats, for example "killing yourself to live"(1973), "national acrobat"(1973), "lord of this world"(1971), "snowblind"(1972), "supernaut"(1972)...
And also: beyond the Wall of Sleep (1970) Warning (1970) Children of the Grave (1971) under the Sun (1972) Sabbath bloody Sabbath (1973)... I probably won't be able to stop))) Everything is fine in the early sabbaths!
Thank you for more Sabbath!!! I will agree with commenters below that next you should check out the opposite side w/ what most consider to be the first "thrash" metal song "Symptom of the Universe"
Yes, but not the studio version off Sabotage or even the live version from 1978- the most ferocious version by far is the live one from 1975, on the Past Lives compilation . Ward sets a faster beat and the sound is incredible - definitely one of the first thrash metal songs . Of course, they omit the closing section from the studio version . Sepultra did a great cover of the song …the lyrics are pretty meaningless , however . ..I think the best version is on UA-cam as “ Black Sabbath -Symptom of the Universe -Paranoid in New Jersey “
Sabbath has many slower, mellow songs scattered throughout their discography. I do like the mellotron strings sound, and I believe coach is right, it is Tony Iommi playing piano. Not my favorite Black sabbath song but it is beautiful. Also try Laguna Sunrise, Solitude, Planet Caravan, Orchid, Embryo, and Fluff for more mellow songs from Sabbath.
Sabbath were the first Metal band I ever saw live, back in 1976, when I was 15. Nice to see this being listened to again as it was the first Metal ballad as far as I know. Ozzy's daughter recorded a version many years after thia but it wasn't this excellent. A beautiful ballad. PS Will you be exploring more Band-Maid soon? Try the widely available DICE/HATE live at Lollopalooza for an epic double bill (1 song segues into another) which is only a few months old so you can see how they are today (clue: even better).

Good on ya for staying true to the journey. And not just turning your nose up at a ballad. What strings were those, I wonder? I want to say violin, but I think I'm way wrong. Synth on a keyboard behind the piano in the mix? hehe, can't figure it out. Great tune, thanks for sharing your reaction, CoachCastTV!
Some of these videos are not as popular, but that's ok with us. We like this band, and we want to hear more from them. Mrs. Coach even bought a Black Sabbath T-shirt, so we're committed now. LOL
I'm not sure if you're trying to go somewhat chronological through Black Sabbath, but I would recommend Symptom of the Universe from the Sabotage album 1975 or if you want to check out another Black Sabbath ballad, She's Gone from Technical Ecstasy 1976. If you're trying to go through Chronologically through their albums, one of my favorite tracks from Vol 4 is Wheels of Confusion/The Straightener. It is the opening track from the 1972 Vol. 4 album. Keep those Black Sabbath reactions coming.
Yeah its not unusual to those that that grew up with them there are a few of these on various albums😂. You tended to listen to the whole album warts and all back then as it was vinyl & a pain in the arse to get up & skip songs. To be honest listening on CD these days I tend to skip this one. 'It's Alright' off their Technical Ecstasy album and sung by Bill Ward is another one. Its bit more upbeat than this though But I do listen to that one 😂 And there is a video for it 👍
On Master Of Reality the ballad Solitude is sung by Ozzy. The thing is it's a different voice of his and doesn't sound like you normally hear him. Bill Ward sing main vocals on two later 70s song It's All right and Swinging The Chain. I love the Melletron on this song your playing. The Melletron is a keyboard that utilises prerecorded sounds and temperate changes caused it to go out of tune. The Beatles, King Crimson and a host of other groups used. There is a newer cover of Changes featuring Ozzy and his daughter Kelly. I'm making a request for Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Children Of The Grave.
Certainly not my favorite Black Sabbath sound. Odd to say a Black Sabbath Song is beautiful. It really finds it's home in the soul cover by Charles Bradley a number of years ago.
In my opinion the best ballads are done by bands that don't do them striving for a hit. Instead does them because they think it's good material and deserves to be listen to. And as an album listener, I think that they have to fit in well with the rest of the songs on the album. Formulaic ballads is just boring. "Solitude" and "Planet Caravan" are other awesome Sabbath songs in the gentler category.
In Iommi's autobiography called "Iron Man", he states that they tried to get at least one slower song on each album. My personal favorite would be Solitude from their 3rd album.
