    The propellor shaft as well as the rear wheels and axles will turn manually when the car is on a lift wheels off the ground , weather it is running in drive or in park. My understanding is that the propeller shaft is always turning when in drive or reverse and that the rear diff is only engaged by the coupler when awd is needed . There appears to be no output from the transfer case at least when I had all 4 wheels off the ground car running in drive with the 4wd lock button on. If the propellor should always be turning when in drive and it is not ,then the transfer case isn’t operating. The question is weather it’s only the transfer case or the transaxle or both causing no output. I have read a few posts that say the splines on the transfer case that fit into the transaxle splines can strip out causing this issue and you may never know it until you check if the rear wheels are spinning . I bought this used so the previous owner may have done what ever damage happened but there was that thump in reverse i heard right after I bought it and the jerking that happened the other day on the left turn . So, have you seen this issue before and if the transfer case /transaxle issue is the problem will running it cause catastrophic failure of everything in the drive line? There doesn’t appear to be any noise now and I want to run it until I can find another car which is tough to find now. Thanks again

    • @hyundaitech
      @hyundaitech  Рік тому

      You are correct the coupler should locked it up. If theres no noise should be fine, it could be in your case that the transfer case area is the problem.

  • @warrenepstein6397

    Ok so I lifted up the car and ran the drive line in awd with coupler lock up engaged. The driveshaft is not turning. I have read that the splines on the transfer case as well as the final drive of the transaxle strip out causing the No all wheel drive response and only 2 wd use. Do the transfer cases go bad on these routinely or is it probable that this strip out has occurred ? You would think there would be grinding noises which there are none. Will it blow apart if it’s just the transfer case or can I just drive in 2wd without catastrophic failure ? Found a low mileage trans and transfer case for $1,100 US + $1000 labor but I’m not sure it’s worth repairing. Your input would be great and helpful. Thanks

    • @hyundaitech

      Driveshaft you mean the propeller shaft?(the middle long shaft?) So only the front tires are turning in all wheel drive mode? I never seen transfer cases goes bad on this models unless theres damage or obvious noise. Unless the rear diff is lock up and causing the prop shaft not to turn. I would suggest to disconnect the middle shaft and see when put to drive the transfer case turns, atleast you can eliminate if its coming from the front or rear coupling locked up. Hope that helps

      By my experience its always the differential coupling when the symptoms of skipping, thumping. The only i can think of right now if you take out both rear driveshaft and no more symptoms then definitely its the rear differential coupling but that kind of elimination process is so labor intensive. Either you consult a professional mechanic to really pinpoint the issue. Hope that helps

    I have a 2013 V6 AWD Santa Fe. I got a loud bang from the rear and since then I have only had 2wd. The lock button does nothing. I get no odd noise and the vehicle drives fine now, except no AWD. Is this more likely the coupler or rear differential?

    • @hyundaitech

      Most likely its the differential coupling. If you decide to replace the coupling, make sure that the tires has no uneven wear on them coz that can attribute to the failure of the coupler. Hope that helps

    Good morning. Bought the 15 sante fe sport when my crv was totaled last summer . Noticed a noticeable thump when backing up but no other sounds. Had it checked and none of the shops could figure it out so I carefully have been driving it for a year. Yesterday while making a quick left turn car made banging and jerking noises . Kept thumping upon forward and reverse and turning. Noise is now gone. Is this a coupler issue , rear diff or transfer case issue? If the coupler is replaced does it need to be reprogrammed or will it relearn on its own? Thanks

      It depends on the year when you replace the coupler, some years jist plug and play, other ones it to reset the clutch. Your problem sounds like a coupling issue. If they will install it when they go to their scanner if theres an option yeah it needs to be reset

    What is the difference of rear differential coupling to rear differential bushing

    • @hyundaitech

      Rear diff bushing its where the mounting bolts goes tru the diff itself, coupling is the actuator to engage the rear wheels.

    How would I know if the problem is the whole coupling and not just the actuator? I have no grinding noise or anything, just no AWD. Its a 2014 Sorento. We bought the vehicle used in 2019 and I suspect it wasn't working at the time we bought it so we have never heard to noise or anything like others have said. What you can try is put the shift lever in park, lift the two rear tires off the ground, then try spinning your propeller shaft, if it spins meaning that the spline on the transfer case to transmission is not lock and you need to investigate further the transfer case. If it doesnt spin, now you have to investigate the rear diff area.
