What i like about this repair, which also says a lot about you as a person is a lot of other mechanics would have just charged the customer for the new part, slapped it on and sent them down the road $1500 worse off, where as you found a cheaper solution.. and a more interesting one to watch.. saving a complete stranger lots of money. i respect you for that! great video again eric.

An oldtimer who I worked with told me, "man made it, it didn't make the man" so we can fix it. "We fix everything...except broken hearts!" And he did, he would come up with his own design if there wasn't a conventional fix. He would think outside the box before there was a box so to speak. We all have come up with shortcuts along the way, when "book time" calls for 4 hours we figure out how to do it in half the time and better! Keep twisting those wrenches guys, not your brains! And thanks for all the great videos!

I am impressed, sir! Haven't seen an actual mechanic actually fix something rather than just replacing it for decades. Reminds me of my days working in a service station some 40 years ago. A woman had a station wagon with a tailgate power window fail. The old mechanic freaked when the parts store quoted a price for a new one. He took the old one apart and replaced the brushes with ones from an old sewing machine. Worked like a charm. You are an old soul!

Unfortunately it would take a whole state full of Eric O's to raise the bar for mechanics across the country. Only a small percentage of the population will see these videos and with the kickbacks that go on behind the scenes, out of sight of the general public, it's greed for that almighty dollar that will win out every time. Besides, the majority of mechanics now days don't have the diagnostic or mechanical skill to do a job like that anymore. Most of them now are just parts changers, selling parts for their bosses bonuses and the companies they work for. It's sad but true. Eric O, Scanner Danner, Jim and Eric the Car Guy's, are all part of a dying breed of hands on, dirt under the fingernails mechanics who actually possess the skills necessary to repair things. They are the Remanufacturers themselves, just like the old mechanics were before the days of Remanufactured auto parts. They used to sell alternator rebuild kits and might still, but when was the last time anyone bought one? In the past, we'd fix it and put it back on. His shirt or hat should say Eric O, South Main Auto, Remanufacturing and Repair! In an Apochylips, that is the kind of people I'm banding together! The rest can take a number and wait at the counter! Take care. Jpol.

Thank you so much for figuring this out. My brother did his due diligence when we were looking into getting my "rear diff" fixed, because a shop told me it was "trashed," stumbled across the service bulletin, then your videos. You just saved me *at least* $700, and it was a repair I was able to do by myself at home when I had the time -- and mine was in *way* worse shape. The bearing actually fell apart and it was making horrible grinding noises. Parts only costed about $50-60. No sound, no vibration. 4wd again just in time for winter.

As a machinist/millwright, it's my job to diagnose and fix complex, obscure problems daily. I don't get the luxury of just being a glorified part changer, I actually have to fix things. It's so great to see an actual old school mentality mechanic! You know, the kind that really cares about his customers and doesn't just keep throwing parts at something until he actually figures out what's wrong. Good for you! I wish there was someone near me that could claim the same qualification.

The reality is that dealerships r only interested in time and $$$; cars in, cars out. Give the customer an estimate, if they don't like it, take your car somewhere else. Part swapping is what they know. The shop manager would never allow a tech to "waste" time diagnosing and doing that type of repair.

    • @WCGwkf

Lifetime warranty lasts as long as the part. It's like going to an "All You Can Eat Fish Fry - $9.95"
Customer to Server: "I would like more fish, please."
      Server: "Can't have any more."
Customer: "Why not? This is an 'All You Can Eat Fish Fry' isn't it?"
      Server: "Yep"
      Customer: "Well then, why not?"
Server: "That's all the fish you can ear for $9.95. Didn't say anything about seconds or thirds. You want more fish? It'll cost you another $9.95."

I've got a 2003 2.7 AWD Santa Fe that has been leaking oil out the front transfer case forever. I took it to the dealership and they wanted $1000 to fix the leak(and wouldn't guarantee that it would be leak free afterwards!). It leaks around the driveshaft and I have just been refilling it every so often. Your video gave me the incentive to tear the back end of it off, pound out the Helical(?) gear and replace the two seals I could get to. Now leak free. All for around $30. You inspire more people than you know. Thanks.

You could have placed the yoke/flange in the freezer and placed the metal seal in hot water or a toaster oven and the coefficient of expansion/contraction due to temperature changes in the material would have provided enough clearance to just slip the seal onto the yoke without pounding. I use this method when I am rebuilding Seadoo Rotax engine for jet skis and jet boats. I would put the crank in the freezer and use a toaster oven to heat the bearings. They always slip on without any pounding.

The bearing with rubber seals will probably last longer than the original one with shields only. Long ago, the 1994 Chrysler Concorde/Dodge Intrepid/Eagle Vision with 3.5 engine had tensioning idler for the alternator and supposedly it was not serviceable, only replaceable as a unit. Pressed the old bearing out, bought new one at the local industrial supply house and going again a few minutes for about 12% of the cost of new idler assembly.

Most cutoff disc failures and the results of the failure come from cutting parts that are loaded and the wheel gets pinched and breaks apart, think about what you're cutting and any loads before grinding.... and wear safety gear.... safety third ;)

    • @ZerokillerOppel1
      @ZerokillerOppel1 5 років тому +1

They go boom if you move 'em sideways during cutting. They're only made for cutting. Even thinking about grinding makes them come in your face.
The 3mm discs are also made for cutting only but with experience you can grind a little with them too. Not so with the 1 mm discs...
