I had exactly the same type of mechanic that this person had. Went through 4 other "shops", one of them a dealer. They assumed that the customers are always clueless. How many chances can you give them and how can you build trust. I prefer honest up front mechanics / shops since my life and the lives of my family are on the line. Is it painful to pay for major repairs, yes, but regular scheduled maintenance helps to keep the big problem from occurring in the 1st place.
I am lucky to have found Lou. He is understanding of cost and tries to repair before replacing if it makes financial sense and does not compromise safety. Been with him for many years now and have never had any reason to even consider looking elsewhere. Straight up and honest is what you can expect from his shop.

Question for you: was it towed out of your shop?
I ask because my next question would be: as a licenced shop, if he attempted to drive it, would you pull the plates on it?
This stems from a time I took it to my local small town Canadian Tire shop with an issue with my steering. The U joint in the shaft was toast and they gave me a reasonable price to fix it so I said sure, go ahead. "Are you going to leave it"? me: "oh sure," Them: that's good because in the state it's in, I couldn't let you drive out of here with it. It's literally on the verge of separating.
I respected him for saying that, looking out for my best interest.
Another point: "is it worth it to fix". I was in a similar spot like 3 months ago. 2004 F150 GREAT body and frame. Top condition. BUT ball joints, phasers, timing, front brakes, alternator, water pump, exhaust manifolds, $4200.00. Truck is only worth $5000. I did the repairs. WHY? Because "what else am I going to buy for $5000? Certainly not another newer Pickup for anywhere near that and if I bought another older one, it would eventually need all that anyways. A newer pickup goes for around $12000 and up.

mechanics are not allowed to pull plates. When there is a car like this and the customer refuses I just refuse to work on the car.

@@LouTrottier ah ok, after a quick google I heard of a situation where a mechanic could have just called the MTO and informed them the vehicle was unsafe and let them deal with it.
I find it funny though how you're allowed to certify a vehicle so it can be driven on the road but you're not allowed to uncertify it/prevent it from being driven on the road.
I can see the pratfalls with giving mech's the ability though. Unscrupulous shops would have a field day.

Sometimes our industry, on both the sales and service side of things, leaves us in a position where the right thing to do for the customer is to deliver the hard, often unwanted, news. Frequently the truth is met with a lot of bewilderment, resentment and anger. However; I feel much better every night after having delivered the truth, even if it doesn't result in a sale (or in your case, a repair). In a situation like this one, where mechanical failure is imminent, I am hopeful the owner came to their senses after what should be a similar, if not identical, diagnosis from subsequent technician(s).

I have the same question as Mike Can you legally pull the plates? Can you call the other shop it is going to and have them pull the plates?. Can you call the MTO and let them see the condition and have them pull the plates? That machine is dangerous to both the owner and the public. Did you offer to show him the video? I have had some winter beaters in my time but none were ever like this one

The owner of the car was belligerent. I refuse to deal with people like that. Sadly, A HVAC technician can lock your gas supply to your house but I can't pull plates.

Jesus christ........ I did not expect any other answer from the customer. You know the type of owner when you see the state of the car. They dont care and they will not spend money on it AT ALL.

I do my maintanance myself and i realy dont know what people are talking about. ive put 350k kms on a 530i e60. i maintain everything as it should. why do people make such a fuss about maintanance? If you want to drive for free get a bicycle.

@@mrboostification Ha even bikes have some maintenance but I agree with you. Many don’t know how to even check their oil level and don’t care. I know people who buy a used car and just drive it till it stops then junk it and get another one. Very strange
