Ven vs. Mysterious Figure without Surges or Dodge Roll (Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, PSP non-FM)

- You have no idea how much I wanted to actually be able to make a video with "without Surges or [grounded dodge]" in the title, haha. That, plus my being lower than level 99, specifically not using Cinderella, and this being Ven's debut on this channel make this a bit of a different video than normal!
...and since it's Ven's debut, I might as well do a little writeup on how he fares in this challenge. Simply put, he's a glass cannon. Whereas at high levels Terra and Aqua can take a hit from some of MF's more powerful attacks (notably Raging Storm and Doom), Ven is never able to without D-Link support - even at level 99 - in spite of his higher defense. This also means that he can only ever take two hits from laser orbs while retaining more than 1 HP, which makes that attack more of a pain for him than Terra or especially Aqua. (Amusingly/annoyingly, he would be able to do both of these things if he had even just 1 more HP OR defense. Since he has a little more HP in FM, he is probably just outright the best character for this challenge in that version.)
That said, he does have excellent attacking capabilities, having some of the best normal attacks in the game, the best (IMO) ultimate finish command, and pretty powerful unique command styles. Notably, he can do the same short hop/aerial attack/land/repeat combo as Aqua, but with the added bonus of being able to start this combo from further away due to a much faster aerial distance closer.
Also, to go off on a tangent, Cyclone may outright be the best command style for this fight. I already knew that the long range Strike Raid-like attack was good due to being a disjoint which hits from outside his reach, often before he even starts attacking. However, in the course of testing for this video, I found out that Cyclone's short range spin attack is also exceptionally useful by virtue of being so fast - fast enough that even if he successfully blocks it, you can still punish his guard!
I could probably go on! But I think I'll save some words for the next Ven video, when I actually demonstrate the stuff I'd like to talk about.

I knew there was a way to beat Mysterious Figure without thunder serge invulnerability frames
Voltage Stack🤔
Never even knew about this command
Yeah the big catch to doing this fight without surges is that you still really want an answer to invisibility, otherwise he can just make your offense grind to a halt for 30 seconds at a time whenever he wants to so long as he's in second phase. Voltage Stack is probably the second or third best such answer.
@@Lapis_Pylosiphorumone of the 3 slots like unison rush, i'm guessing the more the players it deals more damage
This is very inspiring and I declared it top tier play. You are skilled. I want to try things like this myself, especially unusual strategies that people usually think it is counter-intuitive but it works if you understand your opponent's attack pattern and do some testing. Back then, I don't want to learn and just want to get everything over with.
I got to learn the mechanics as well as testing some stuff while learning enemies attack pattern like what I do for Mega Man Battle Network and Mega Man Star Force. The only downside to PSP is controlling the camera angle to get optimised view to see what to dodge and when to strike.
Regardless, salute to you buddy for trying this on the original version. Keep up the good work.
this was actually a more efficient and fast way instead of spamming dodgeroll
Mmhmm. Surges + Curaga + dodge spam is a serviceable strat for all characters, but I don't think it's the best one by any stretch of the imagination.
@@oscuritaforze i mean faster, not safer:v
Yeah, for sure. It's pretty difficult to beat infinite i-frames in terms of safety lol.
@@oscuritaforze Man, you might be sick at BBS but your understanding skills need some leveling up
@@emildegas4213 Understanding of?
I'm happy to have actually seen the fight, rather than the equivalent of a happyslaps roll game.
I learned something new, I didn't know he could also rewind time.
That honestly scared me then again it does make sense as he does it in later fights
I didn't even know voltage stack existed man 💀
Not surprising lol. It only being in the arena shop means it's often only a checklist item for completionists.
@@oscuritaforze I was about to say the same. I always loved Ven's command deck because he got the coolest and seemingly most unique moves
This honestly looks more fun than spamming the same move over and over again
You're definitely a legend!
Thanks!
That's some good stuff right there.
so good
What--PSP Version??
OMG, What year is it now???
This is insane great thing!!
Esports when?
Joke aside, great play. Reminded me of beating mysterious figure for the first time (was low level)
I did spam thunder surges, but I was just extremely aggressive and interrupted him all the time even without them. Thunder surges alone cannot win this fight, gotta interrupt for a quick victory, otherwise you make a mistake in a long stretch and die.
Again. Just really shows how much they designed options for ven and aqua for this boss...
And clearly forgot terra even existed.
Hell goofy and on a good day peter pan, make this fight a wipeout.
And this without ven's and aqua's many different command style options.
Shoutout to sky climber for being the rarest command style but if implemented correctly makes it really hard for the mysterious figure to _hit you_
I think it would've actually been better for Terra if they had forgotten he existed lol. There are some things Terra has which work differently vs. MF compared to other enemies, and I can't think of a reason other than them specifically thinking of them and opting to change them. Example: Quake and certain parts of Rockbreaker's combo launch other enemies, but not MF.
Though I think the most ridiculous thing is Ice Slide. Aqua and Ven can dodge right through MF's X-Slash projectile with it, but if Terra tries this he gets parried! *_Why_* ?!
All that said, Terra does have _some_ stuff going for him in spite of how much they seem to have had it out for him.
The fact that this game gas been remastered onto 3 seperate consoles and also has a worse version on the Switch yet you choose to play the psp version, which I can only imagone was a pain to record with, is super funny to me.
Heh. Part of that is having stuff to demonstrate that's specific to this version of the game, part is this just being the version I have ready access to. :P
@@oscuritaforze Fair point
Believe it or not, PSP was one of the easiest options to record back when I did capture card stuff. You still got to see the PSP screen, whereas early recording software had significant delay in the software previews the longer you recorded. That or you used a cable splitter, which caused a smaller delay if you went for more than ten minutes, but was much worse at the start of recording (since you'd have something specific in mind you wanted to capture.) This is what I remember it as in general, anyway: it being a pain in the ass to record everything else, but PSP having nothing worth recording.
Wait, I think I lied. I think you still had to use the cable splitter since the screen shut off, but the delay wasn't as pervasive due to low resolution.
Fighting mysterious figure the honorable way with ventus
Wow. One button nobody had ever tried before.
Right?!
the fact that it’s on the psp version too (or maybe just emulated)
It is indeed the PSP version, and it's on original hardware to boot.
@@oscuritaforze I'm happily surprised your game didn't get stuck loading whenever he charged up. Mine had that issue repeatedly 😪 him and maybe 2 other bosses gave me that issue
@@jjgarcia156 that is your psp problem lol i played this fight on 2 different psp and the only problem i had was the shitty framerate
Now find a non-surge strategy for Terra
I actually have a couple of those posted already:

Are you even human!?
how in the world-
A lot of testing and a lot of notes lol. Plus a great deal of patience.
@@oscuritaforze Nah, ain’t no way son. You staggered him for 3 entire hits and SOME HOW managed to semi-loop him And used commands no player would ever risk using? You have my eternal respect.
Pretty sure using the Peter pan swordbill is completely useless since he can pull up renewal barrier and crash the game like what Stickman Sham did.
That's by far the most likely outcome, yeah. Though I would like to test the limits of the possible instakill, and maybe see if I can find out how to make it more consistent.
By the way, was this meant to be a comment on a different video? I didn't even have Peter Pan equipped here.
I still find it stipid how you cant lock on to YX when hes invisible despite the fact that you can clearly see his laser blades...
Yeah for sure. Making invisibility prevent your attacks from auto-targeting him would've punishing enough without also making it so much harder to tell where he is.
Ven is My beat friend
