Great video! This gives me some confidence for success on my project. Planning to smoke out most of the "chromed" plastic parts on my Honda VTX 1800. Got the adhesion promoter, the metal cast smoke, and some K2 Clear. These parts are super visible so I'm a little nervous but it's just paint. I can always redo it if it doesn't turn out right.
ive been debating on how to paint the grey anodized rails of my Pontoon boat fencing... im wondering how this would hold up to every day sun and salt of the marine environment
Question: It looks like it turned out great. I want to paint a guitar pickguard (a pickguard is a flat piece of shaped material that is under the strings where people generally strum holds the pickups and covers the electronics and screwed into the wooden body with a bunch of screws). I'd like to paint a piece of anodized black aluminum to nice off-white color. In this video your project came out a very nice looking color and you mentioned it will hold up well. So when you play guitar you are strumming with a hard little piece of plastic called a pick over and over. So generally, it will scrap against the pickguard over and over, and I am sure you have seen old beat-up guitars where the strumming has really worn it down. My question is when you paint this do you think it will hold up pretty well for some time or will it instantly start looking like garbage? The black anodized aluminum pickguard is all I can find. Any suggestions beyond your video?
That was a well done video, however, it did not cover what I have a question about. I recently purchased a Ruger 22/45 Lite, which has an anodized aluminum (red) barrel shroud. I want to paint highlight details on the shroud, but do not know if any paint will adhere to anodized aluminum. Do you know anything about that subject? I paid extra for that color, and do not want to strip it to bare metal.
Hello there i have an old cellphone which has an anodized aluminum case, do you think this might work with it?, also since this is a small part how can i manage to not making a mess with the spray ?
Yeah it should ok. Just remember that it'll be painted now and being a phone case it's likely to chip off over time. So how long it lasts for will depend on just how rough you are with your phone I guess. Good Luck!
Sand it down clean it real good amd reanodize it. Use rit dye and water and a battery charger.. do ot right its so easy. Dont listen to amyone that says spray paint it. A week an rock chipps itll look worse than before
Is that Duplicolor Metalcast the best spray can to give metal an anodized color look? As I've got some nickel plated metal that I need to be a certain color. But I'm wanting it to look like it's tinted metal, i.e. the anodized look like the older colored ipods. As I don't like the painted look, which looks cheap. I believe there are other brands out there, but not sure. I know there are some that are candy colors, but not sure if those will have an anodized look or not.
It’s the best we found so far. Rustoleum also has some anodized spray cans that I have seen recently at AutoZone and advanced, but I’ve never used them so I can’t really comment on it. Only about 5 to 6 bucks a can so you’d probably have to test it out if you’re looking for a very specific color.
Tried nickelplating them a little more with a tiny amount of dye in the electrolytic solution? Like literally 1 drop. Or even metal paint (as the metal in the paint would also be pulled to the nickel plated part)
Great video! I want to change the color of an anodized aluminum part, which is only 1 - 1 1/2 inches wide and hard to reach grooves. Does one have to de-anodize and if yes, with what or how? And then once that is done can one proceed with your process, Or just go straight to your process from the start right over the original anodized color?" Thanks!!
I wouldn't concern so much with removing all the original color. Giving the surface a light brazing in the hard-to -reach spots should prove much more important when it comes to changing the color. Remember paint cannot adhere to a surface that is too smooth. That includes a primer. The primers job, of course, is to help the color adhere. You can't over primer since primer can always be sanded down. So primer, or metal cast, until all the original color is covered. Proceed from there with light coats of color. As many as it takes to get full coverage in small grooves and any hard to reach spots. Good luck!
That's a good question! Never actually done an anodized black. When it comes to a faded black I have always done a high heat rated paint to restore, like wheel or caliper paint. I would think that the same process we used in the video would work just fine for black. I know they do sell an anodized black paint, I just have no experience using it to say for sure whether or not it would work.
If you had cleaned the part with degreaser, the blue metalcast would have re blued them w/o all those other steps. The metalcast is a tinted clear coat!!
It doesn't have as nice if a surface finish appearance as an anodized polished part though. I wonder if using a chrome base coat will give it a smoother finish appearance.
Hey guys im getting aluminium wheels for my losi baja rey rc car and I would like to paint the beadlocks anodised blue is there any other paint that I will need to buy to do the job I already have the blue anodised paint the same as what you have please any help would be good thank you
I would suggest an adhesion promoter spray to use as the very first layer before anything else. This will help ensure a very thick overall coverage once all the light coats are built up. Then for a top coat a few layers of a high heat, uv resistant, and non yellowing clear. This will protect the color from fading, chipping and changing color from the heat. Hope it's not too late for a response. I did see that you asked this several days ago. Sorry for the delayed response. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!!!
Would you be able to send pictures of the other sprays that I need please because I already have the blue anodised I'm just not good with knowing what under coats n clear sprays I need
today in canada, those 4 cans are going to run me a cool hundy...... ugh... regardless of that i guess its still cheaper than sending parts out to re-anodize.
We got these from our local Advanced Auto Parts. These same cans of paint can be purchased at any Auto Zone as well as most Ace Hardware, or Home Deposit stores as well. Hope this helps
Yeah it should. Anything aluminum as long as the prep work is done thoroughly. Of course there is no substitute for experience with spray cans. That's also why we thought it might be useful to make a detailed video on how we've been able to have success with this several times.
Nice work guys and HA! at the "relax" part. cheers

Does this work for aluminum gun parts?
What about for black ano parts, that have faded to a purplish color?? I'd like to restore them back to black, and retain the anodized look.

What is a "bumper hook"
Tow hook🪝. Bright and easy to spot. As required by some race tracks and motorsport events.
Would it work on bike
Yeah man. Any aluminum parts large or small. Just keep in mind anything that gets excessive heat will fade over time.
Dudes, seriously your intro "music" put me primarily into a gran mal epileptic seizure with a secondary subdural hematoma
Mexican beer will give you the runs
Metal cast alone is already a transparent colored clear coat. no need for an extra can of clear coat
That's up to you. We like it to protect the color so it doesn't fade for years.
It'll hold up a lot better with a clear coat.
What the hell is a bumper hook?
Better known as a bumper quick release. The bolts on the outside take the place of the bolts on the underside.
If you got a broke ass hoopty that the bumper falls off you can use hooks n bungies to hold it up it’s a ghetto thing
Its what soy boys do to their cars. Its to let other men know you like to "dock" 👉👈
Diy photographer....FOCUS!!
Awe, try again.
Cant have you seeing the runs
whats the point of even anodizing if you end up spray painting it lol.. also that intro song is aids.
It's not anodizing. It's painting an anodized part to restore. No points participation in this conversation.
