  • Many aluminum bicycle components are anodized Black these days. They look good new, but time and use can turn a pretty part into an eyesore. Anodized aluminum crankarms are particularly prone to getting mucked up by dropped chains, crank strikes, and shoe/sock/pant leg rubbing.
Here, we explain and execute the processes for turning anodized bike components silver by removing the black anodized finish. In other words, this video details how to remove anodizing and what to do to improve the appearance of silver aluminum bicycle parts.
So click on, sit back, and take in the experience. Watch this one video and you'll be ready to turn all your anodized aluminum bike components into gleaming works of art.
    Supplies needed:
Degreaser--Simple Green, Orange, or Purple Extreme work for this purpose.
    Drill
2" (5cm) wire brush drill bit-coarse (we used Forney #72729)
2" (5cm) wire brush drill bit-fine (we used Forney #72730)
    600 grit sandpaper
    800 grit sandpaper
(if you can get 1000 or 1200 grit as well, that could be good)
Aluminum polish (any household metal polish should do)
Ceramic Spray finish (we used Mothers CMX)
    Rags

On my black bike cranks I just discovered if you use Mother’s Metal Polish on black anodized aluminum it will bring the black anodized aluminum finish to a smooth black shine, and looks really good!

Oven cleaner will just lift anodising without the need to sand.

now you can save yourself all the black surface removal by using electrolysis without damaging the material further below the anodized layer, and without working with machines. Its a good idea to re anodize it to ccreate a new protective layer, because the oxide that is generated in the surface is not mechanical resistant, so the scratches quatity in he surface will just build up without a proper protective layer

Yes. I ended up experimenting on the sink as well. When the project was over, it looked much better.

Maybe it's the masochism that comes with being a bike rider. Maybe it was trying to avoid harsh chemicals. Maybe it was trying for a one-off two-tone finish.
Mostly, I think, it was to see how much time and effort it took. I thought it would take less of both. It was also a kind of test in terms of thinking ahead to whether or not I want to de-anodize other components and what kind of effort that will take.

@@JRAlong hi thank u for the help. I have an handlebar with coated powder, how can i remove it using chemicals? i don't have sand blaster..

@@andyjayso4551 I"d be leery of using chemicals to take off anodizing if the handlebar section is a sleeve or any kind of joint. So, please keep that in mind.
Realize I'm not a professional metallurgist, so you should follow up with your own research, like contacting the handlebar manufacturer or doing research on the alloy under the anodizing, before embarking on such an adventure.
With all those provisos, the way people typically do it is use a liquid with hydrochloric or sulfamic acid in it.
And, when done, clean and dry thoroughly and find some kind of clear coat to go over the component, possibly like what I used in the video.

@@andyjayso4551I know it's a month old but aircraft stripper is the best thing I've used on powder coat. You put it on let it sit and the powder coat literally wipes off
