    Through trial and error I've figured out the correct way to paint my recessed trolling motor foot pedal tray. But this will work with pretty much any aluminum.

    Great video! The reason it’s hard to get paint to stick to aluminum is because the aluminum surface immediately begins to form a loose oxide. If you have ever wiped off aluminum with a rag or your hand you’ll see the oxide as a grey color. Since the oxide is loose any paint applied sticks to the loose oxide and not the aluminum. The self etch primer has an “enchant “ that removes the oxide and roughens the surface for the paint. Cool stuff!

    The $3 mask you got is for dust, not chemicals. For about $10 or $12 you can buy a 3M organic vapor mask. A guy in our state was using strong stripper
    to completely strip the paint in smaller room during a commercial renovation in our state and, when he didn’t come home, he was found dead from the organic vapors (VOCs) he inhaled. This is why you want to get the right mask. Had the guy lived, his brain would have been toast. Thanks for the tip on using etching primer to paint aluminium - I had no idea before this video.

      Well now that’s just silly. I was doing this outside my garage but your still right I should have a respirator and not just a dust mask. “Do as I say not as I do” applies here. Lol

    Aluminum creates a natural oxide that acts like a layer between the paint and the aluminum and keeps the paint from actually sticking to the aluminum. That's why it's recommended to sand the aluminum with 80 grit then some finer sand paper to remove the oxide. The oxide does start generating again rapidly so only do still the sanding if your prepared to prime the aluminum the same day. The self etching primer is needed because aluminum is such a naturally smooth finish the paint literally just runs off and doesn't stick. The sanding helps create a rough surface and the etching primer also creates thousands of microscopic etched in the finish so the paint sticks and bonds directly to the work and doesn't run the risk of ever cracking,flaking or anything like that. One last tip I like to add to anybody that's going to do this make sure the paint that you're using is rated for extreme temperatures your toolbox is going to range from very cold to extremely hot temperatures and it is guaranteed 2 flake off and crack if you don't use paint designed for that rough environment. Other than that is a very simple job it's a fun little DIY. Oh and I almost forgot after you're done sanding wipe everything down with vinegar a couple of times and make sure it's very clean vinegar also helps the paint in the primer it here to the aluminum 😉

      When I was in welding school back in the day we had to clean aluminum really good with a wire brush we used ONLY for aluminum (so it wouldn’t cross contaminate) and right before welding, basically within 5 minutes of cleaning because it oxidizes so quickly…. I mean you couldn’t clean it and go to lunch and come back and weld, too much time after cleaning, hope that helps give anyone some perspective….

    The aluminum's electric charge does not easily accept painting. Also, aluminum surfaces are microscopically smoother. By scuffing the metal, it gives it surface to adhere to.

    You must etch metal, especially aluminium. I have found that you should always use the same brand clear coat.
    Reason is that using another brand, the mixture of paint and thinners is massively important. Some clear coats have a lot more thinners in it and will react to the paint. From my experience I have found that rustoleum is the best paint for any metal.

    You have to wait until the paint is fully cured before spraying any clear coat. There is evaporating and degasifying going on for days. Check the paint label. You will see something like dry to the touch 15 min. Okay to handle after 2 hours. Fully cured after 7 days. (All these are affected by temp also.)

    The first go round where it peeled, not sure what the problem was but I learned the hard way that you can't mix Rustoleum with other brands! Rustoleum is enamel and most everything else, (ie Krylon) is laquer. The thing I don't like about Rustoleum primer is many days later it may be dry to the touch but it's not really hard, not good for automotive.

    36 grit sandpaper. Then acetone. Paint will stick every time. Revised: I have since stopped using acetone and moved to a 60 grit sandpaper. After sanding I wipe down with a dry clean rag and paint immediately before oxidation has time to start. On aluminum a coarse sandpaper is needed for the paint to bond to the surface. 80 grit sandpaper is not coarse enough.

      @@GeraltOfRivia99 look don’t tell what to do painting aluminum. I know what I am doing. I’ve been t through that bullshit 400 grit sand paper and a paint job will not last one month and it will just fade away. After 3 coats and 2 clear coats it does not look like zoro went to town on it. I have a reputation of having one of the most durable paint jobs. I can tell that you have never painted aluminum for being outdoors. That 60 grit gives that paint something to bite into and stay on my kinetic blades. No ugly gouges and scratches. You’ve got to remember this is not a hood of a car that I am painting. I am painting something that is on a pole turning in the wind and I’ve got to have the anodized automotive paint last for many many years. In fact I’ve had so many compliments on my paint jobs. My paint jobs have a candy look and the paint is what helps sell my product. You are so wrong about everything. You have never painted aluminum. If you have tried it has been unsuccessful.

    • @SMG_62
      @SMG_62  7 років тому

      +Daniel Cartis absolutely. This thing turned out really good. If your planning on doing a whole boat it's a must have unless you already have a primer base on the boat. When I painted my 14ft boat it already had a primer base on it so I just scuffed it up and added the layer of paint I needed. If I painted my 16ft boat which has no paint on it I would absolutely need to use self etching primer. I would probably over do it too. Using about 4-6 layers of primer and then 4 layers of paint and then clear if you want it. Just know that his isn't the best way to paint a boat. Using a spray gun is the best way to do it. This just happens to be he cheapest way to do it with the tools that I have.

      +dacastro1 I'm going to say dont hose it down ;) the EPA probably wouldn't like that too much. If you could rinse it without making a chemical waste epidemic then I would find a way to do that. But yes. They also make an after wash that is supposed to remove the mess that the paint stripper leaves.
      Let's say I rinsed it in a bucket with water and then properly disposed of the chemical runoff.... let's say it totally didn't kill my grass and everything around it. Let's say I'm a completely responsible adult and did the right thing.

      Thanks for coming over to UA-cam and checking out my videos. I'm really glad you enjoy the videos, steal as many ideas as you can, that's the whole purpose of this channel, and if you have any suggestions for me I'd love to hear them.
      As far as the sump/bilge pump goes, I plan on adding one towards the end of this build when I start doing all the electrical and put in the livewell. I would have to say for a 12ft boat I would go for a drain for sure but then you might also want to add an additional smaller pump that you can toss in the bottom of your boat if you need to use it (that's what I've done in the past).
      For installing the drain plug I would go with something simple like this. Just make sure you seal it with a proper marine grade silicone/sealant so that your boat doesn't take on any water.
      Don't forget to subscribe and share with your friends. I have new videos coming out every week!

      SMG Fishin' I was looking at something like that just so I have a plug for when the boat is sitting.I plan on getting a little sump from Walmart, they have them for like 20 bucks I think.

    I just painted my boat with rustoleum paint. Now that I finally finished I don't like it at all. Can I use the self etching paint to paint over the paint and re paint it again. I don't want to sand it down AGAIN!

    • @SMG_62
      @SMG_62  5 років тому +4

      I would probably find an easier way to sand. Painting over an already bad pint job will only piss you off in the long run.

      Watch the video buddy! Etch the crap out of it before spraying. Using a chemical or abrasive will work most of the time. If it doesn't it's probably not worth the hassle of painting to begin with.

    What type of paint can I put on top of the self etching primer? Any paint? Sprays? Water based? Oil based? It would be for an outdoor aluminum surface, and I would like a *matte/flat* sheen in brown.

    • @SMG_62
      @SMG_62  7 років тому +1

      +Johannes Kalb I would go with an oil based paint if your going to be using it outside. I'm sure others would work though.

      I mean I can give you the PC answer and tell you to make sure you check the label to see if it's compatible. You can see the type of paint l like to use in the video, which is also linked at the very top of the description.

    • @SMG_62
      @SMG_62  6 років тому +1

      That’s a really good question. I think your frame and swingarm might have a clear coat on it right now you might have to get off first to paint it. I know most people typically powder coat their frames. I don’t see why you couldn’t though. Probably wouldn’t hold up as good. Let me know how it goes if you decide to paint it.

    sir, may I know after applying that primer is the color scratch proof?

    • @SMG_62
      @SMG_62  7 років тому +1

      +Mohammad Irfan I wouldn't say scratch proof but it definitely helps by adding a layer of paint between the top coat and the metal.
      Don't forget that paint has a dual purpose. Not only does it look good but its main purpose is to protect the metal from rusting over time. The more layers you have the better protection you'll have.

    Thanks for the tips, but a paper/cloth "respirator" does nothing to prevent chemical fumes from getting into your lungs - they're only for dust particulates. Use a a full chemical mask - one that has charcoal filters - to protect your lungs from chemical fumes.

      This is so false. I use alot of oil base paints and a n95 respirator no matter what it's made out of offers the same protection. For spray painting a little thing like that perfectly fine to have that resperator

    • @michaelpayne8691
      @michaelpayne8691 2 роки тому

      It does not. It attaches to the respirator and actually makes the air your breathing worse. If you can smell it, it's entering your blood stream. You probably think it's going to stop covid too, quiet 🐑.

    • @SMG_62

  • @ca1492bob
    @ca1492bob 9 місяців тому

    I spent a number of years in the aircraft repair biz, painting aluminum is constantly going on, so prep is critical. You don't want your A321 peeling during a 37, 000 ft flight across country! LOl! You want to start by using a chemical called Alumiprep 33, followed by Alodine 1201. Plenty of videos on youtube showing there use , but, they are worth it before painting. This is all about controlling the oxidation process

    • @SMG_62
      @SMG_62  7 років тому

      I'm not really sure about what kind of paint you would want to use on a bath fixture. I guess it all depends on what exactly you're looking for. I'm sure a paint rep at your hardware store could help you out with that. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

    Bare aluminum oxidizes. Paint will not stick to this oxidized surface that will continue oxidizing. This process starts almost immediately. You need to fine sand and then clean (remove all of the dust) form the cleaned aluminum then use an etching primer on the bare surface immediately! Never sand this coat of self etching primer. Self etching primer chemically bonds with the aluminum creating a chemical bond rather than just a mechanical bond. Cover the self etching primer with a filler primer and lightly sand with 320 grit and clean again. Then apply your paint coat and a clear coat if necessary.

    you should never use a propane heater in your garage because of the moisture comes out as a result of the propane burning it makes it very humid in your garage the paint will take forever to dry I learned this when I was trying to paint some of my Mustang parts and wondering why the paint wasn't getting hard I looked over my humidity Gage in the garage and it was over a hundred percent humidity in there
