Thank you so much for this informative video!!! I totally need help with my pleco and this is amazing. I've subscribed to your channel to get more great tips!
I have two bristlenose plecos for about two months. I only have algae wafers, didn’t know that they needed all different types of food! Thanks for the advice from South Australia!
I have four of them and only just discovered this too. They loved watermelon, strawberry and demolished zucchini. Not too keen on the beans. But trying out blanched carrots and broccoli soon too. It made them so much more social and they came out most of the day to eat the zucchini
Thanks for opening my eyes! Got two Pleco, but was just feeding them algae wafers, I didn’t know that they needed all different types of food! Thanks from South Australia!
I've heard them say morning wood and the other brands of food but I'm not sure what the Australian alternative to those would be.. I'll have to ask the fish shops
My 👉Oldest Pleco is over 18, that a Neighbor gave me in 2005, along with a 55 Gallon tank and some other fish, when he stopped having them I got Another One, along the way that is 11👈. That is ALL I've had in my Tank, for a Long Time, bc I was getting too sad when losing fish. Anyway, my Neighbor(passed long ago) had Many tanks and fish, thru the Years, and he told me, to feed the Pleco One Hikari Algae Wafer a day. That is what I've Always done, at night, for Both. I sometimes Worry it's not enough, but I Worry about most everything 🙄. They Both seem to be fine, except for sometimes my oldest one chasing the younger one. I have no way of telling if they are M or F, guess it doesn't matter. Also, Water 🌊 Temp. My tank is 78 to 80 Fahrenheit. That's normal for them ? Thank You. I don't imagine I will get any Comment to this, since it is older video. And, not sure how to find, if I do, am 73, not so good with technology.
Cool! I have my very first little baby pleco and she doesn't seem interested in algea wafers and I've had her for a week now. Won't touch em. So I'll try some of these new things!
i worry when i switch tanks because if one gets too dirty, water is murky etc that they hate the new tank because it doesn't yet have algae or sediment at the bottom. so far my mini pleco has grown big so that is great. Trying to give it a range of different food.
Haha...yes probably. That's why i put all types of food in. just want some sun to shine on the tank to grow soe algae now. I read they eat blood worms...i see these weird tiny thin red and sometimes grey worms swimming in the substrate. worried they will kill my shrimp. it's nice seeing my tiny white pleco turn orange and get a bit bigger@@IansFishRoom
I have a question I only have one pleco but he is about 10 or 11" long I've had him for about 6 years, So with me having about 9 or 10 black Molly's in my 55 gallon tank, when I drop frozen blood worms are the Brine shrimp in in the fish eat it before the pleco ever gets to it.. are there any tricks for that? One more thing what is the easiest way to keep a tomato or string beans or a chunk of cucumber at the bottom
You should try feeding the pleco after lights are out. You can put tomatoes or cucumber on a fork or the pleco feeder I use in the video to keep them down and use canned French cut green beans, they will sink.
@@IansFishRoom Thank you sir.. Another idea I was thinking was thinking was a wooden cure and I could place most of it under the castle in the tank or under the driftwood .. if I am going on vacation for 7 days.. what are my feeding alternatives to having neighbor come in
If you have wood and you've been feeding consistently your fish should be fine for 7 days without being fed. I usually feed a little heavier than normal the week or two before I go away and then just let them go without food for a week. They can feed on algae and wood and be absolutely fine.
hello I have a young (1 inch) BS pleco, at what age should i start feeding it protein? I also put in 1 algae wafer in each night and so far it has not eaten any. I also tried cucumber & green beans, he did not touch them. all he does is eat algae from glass & ornaments. My tank is 1 month old, and I have drift wood which i have not seen him eat from either.
BS Plecos are constantly eating whether you see them or not but while they are very young you might not notice them eat. You can feed protein now but be sure to keep it to small amounts. I'd try Zuchini next as that seems to be a favorite of mine.
Hello I just have 1 question, and its with wafers or with food in genreal. When your ment to fed them each day, how much do i give them. I have one 2 inch and four 1 inchers and i dont know how much to give them. GREAT VIDEO!
Plecos eat a lot. If you feed them at night and there is still food in the morning try cutting back. If it's all gone by morning try adding a little more until you find the right balance for you.
I recently got a pleco this week and it doesn't seem interested in the green beans I've been trying to feed it. Should I try different feeding methods? I'm worried he's not eating enough
thank you, I guess I can use an old fork and try a piece of tomato or cucumber to alternate with algae wafers. I don't think I can handle worms or such. Feed in the evening, got it. 🐟🐠🐌
Candy stripe plecos need more meat in their diet then most plecos so I'd be sure to do a decent amount of frozen shrimp, bloodworms, etc. but otherwise yes.
@IansFishRoom know what? I haven't been able to balance my ph since I changed their tank, even with the water balancers and ph down. We have hard well water. Alot of limestone. I put the driftwood in and I think it helped! I have 2 goldfish, a 5 and 6" and the pleco is about 7". Glad I found this video.
This was when I was just starting out with using music in the background. I don't always use it now but when I do I think its much less distracting. If you watch any of my newer videos let me know what you think.
I feed all of the foods you talked about to my Pleco's. However recently I saw a video done by an ichthyologist that specializes in Pleco's. She talked about how vegetables are really not very good for Pleco's as they actually lack the digestive enzymes needed to break down the cell walls of the plants. She pointed out that vegetables are not something that any Pleco would eat in nature as they are not part of the Pleco's ecological niche. Just "food for thought".
im thinking about getting a pleco for my 55 gallon and i would not be able to feed them bloodworms because my zebra danios turn into mini piranhas and eat all in 0.73 seconds
i thought i would enjoy seeing my new bushy nose pleco sucking on algea or cleaning the tank. nothing so far. 1 week. doesnt seem to even want to move. i checked water parameters and its fine. green beans went in tonight. i think I shouldn't have spent the $20 on this fish.
No particular reason although I don't really consider it a food source it more fits into the realm of algae. I'd consider it supplemental to what is fed.

@@blueant7251 no I don’t know about the alternative brands, could you tell me please?

Hi great video can I use any wood from the garden or do I need to buy specific drift wood? Thanks
Some wood can actually be poisonous so if you don't know for sure I'd stick to driftwood.

Is it ok to put a frozen green beans in?
Yep
I have a mini bristle nosed pleco . Its lived ages off nothing . The mini pellets and perhaps flakes for the guppies . The fish dont fight either.
Plecos are very hardy but living and thriving are very different things.
Thank you sir
You're welcome!
Do you also give them bitter gourd? Do you boil it first?
I've never given them bitter gourd...not even sure what that is.
Do they like live blood worms and just hatched bbs ? Tia.
They will enjoy both just don't overfeed bloodworms
Can they eat broccoli stems?
I'd probably cook them a bit but then they would be fine (make sure they are cool first)
I have a giant pleco and want to put the driftwood in, but the water gets so grey
The driftwood will stop releasing tannins eventually but I personally like the look for some tanks.
