    I just bred my first batch, so easy and fun. I put a cave in a community tank to check if the male was mature enough, 24hrs later he was in there with eggs! Moved him and wrigglers to their own tank to grow out.

    Thanks for the tips! I've gotten my pair to spawn many times but have always had trouble raising the fry. Definitely going to try crushing up the algae wafers when my pair spawns next.

      One thing that can also work depending on your location is placing some driftwood or stones outside in the sun in a bucket to produce algae and diatoms growth .
      As they consume alot of micro organisms that live in algae aswell it gives a good balance.

    I just want to say a huge thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience in fish breeding. Your dedication and passion are truly inspiring! I'm new to breeding myself, and your content has been a fantastic resource to help me get started. I’d really love to connect and maybe even chat with you to learn more, especially from someone as experienced as you. It would mean a lot if you could get back to me-looking forward to hearing from you!

      @@nytashaandersen Then I think you will have to wait a little longer, usually they take a year ,or so to reach sexual maturity, then you won't know where to put them, given how many you have. My male is a hybrid, Albino and normal therefore fish with mixed colors are born

    I would have thought the cold water changes and frequent water changes would be an issue for the shrimp but definitely doesn’t seem that way.

      It’s only a problem if the water that enters the tank comes in too fast, if you add it slowly shrimp will be fine as they have time to acclimate

    An idea to get extra food for fry is placing driftwood or rocks in a bucket or container outside in the sun a week or so and letting it grow a lot of algae and microorganisms.
    Keeping it sealed is a good idea to prevent some pathogens too.

    I have 2 males and 1 female in a tank with 7 different caves of different shapes and sizes and some driftwood + plants. Kept them in there for over a year with cherry shrimp. Zero breeding happened. I feed Zucchini, canned green beans, repashy soilent green, and lots and lots of North Fin Kelp Wafers (their favorite).

    • @jake8748
      @jake8748 Місяць тому

      Are they common bristlenoses? They should have bred by now if so. Take some caves away and one of the males aswell possibly as males can wipe out another's clutch.
      Could try with just 1 cave per male might make them claim one better.
      I personally generally do 1 male and 2 or 3 males.
      If its something like a peppermint/starlight, orange spot, Rio itenez etc they can have far later maturity. Pepper mints are usually 2 years plus before they breed and a good 4 inches.

    Hi Nick, hoping you see this & can offer some advice please! I have a pair of bristlenose in a 110 litre community tank. I have 1 cave. My brisltenose have laid eggs - on the opposite side of the tank from the cave where the male in currently guarding (it's empty). They spawned about a month ago (again not in the cave) and the male kept moving the eggs. I think some hatched but we never saw any fry. My question is, should I move them? And him too, or just the eggs? Either to the cave or a breeding box? I'd appreciate your advice! The eggs are orange. Thanks, Sue

    Great video! Interesting theory about the gut microbiome... would make a lot of sense. I had my first batch of bn babies about a month ago, and a week ago I found a big bundle of eggs that had been kicked out of the cave. I put them in a breeder box and they all hatched, babies look good. Would you try to add them back into the tank with the parents and their older siblings? Or do you think targeted feeding in a smaller tank for awhile would get them through?

  • @ToupDawg
    @ToupDawg Місяць тому +1

    Do you add a heater to the tank? What's the optimal temperature for them?

    • @jake8748
      @jake8748 Місяць тому

      I breed them aswell and live similar area to Nick.
      Yes we generally need heaters through winter especially if you want to keep them breeding.
      Ideally is same ranges as other fish from the Amazon region 20-28 Celsius. Ive found around 25-27 the best temp for breeding though with a cool waterchange.
      As an idea I've had them breed at the same time as Angel fish, Corydoras and Bolivian Rams in the same tank (community tank but didn't keep any fry really).
      But as for their tolerance, its likely partly will depend on your local specimens but I've personally had them survive our winters outside in a above ground pond. Our air temps through winter can drop to around 0 Celsius and slightly under and rise to 9-20 degrees by day. Didn't actually do the temp of my pond but I think it would have been atleast as low as 10 degrees maybe lower at times.
      In summer we often get to 40 degrees Celsius and inside tanks I've had them as high as 32-34 Celsius and bristlenoses were still fine.

    This is also a warning for the normal aquarium owner at home... NEVER EVER put a male and a female in the same tank. They WILL breed and never stop churning out babies. Even if you have no cave, they will find a place to do it. They might be basically in every tank out there and that is also the reason why you will have big problems getting rid of them. So if you dont want to breed them don't risk it ; )
