    I miss our beloved Pooty Fish. She was a common pleco, and we bought her when she was an inch long little baby fish. We had her for 20 years and she was 24” long and had a very sweet personality. She loved to watch TV and when we turned it off at night she would spit rocks at the side of her tank to show her displeasure. When we turned the TV back on she would resume watching it. Many family members and friends would laugh when they witnessed her television viewing and spitting rocks. Everyone who met her adored her and still remember her to this day.
    Pooty Fish was so very gentle that she would let the baby guppies hang out underneath her front fins. She never ate the baby guppy fry while they swam in and out of her mouth. My Kuhli loaches liked to balance on top of her head and on her back. Her best friend was a little grey Corydoras catfish that we brought home from the pet shop at the same time as Pooty Fish. When she became bigger than the catfish, she would hug him by placing her fin around the little catfish and holding him against the side of her body.
    The catfish passed away 12 years later and Pooty Fish was heartbroken. She refused to eat for almost 4 months and became thin. She slowly started eating again, but her personality/behavior was never again quite the same as before. She missed her little companion. When we moved to a new home she was injured during transport and passed away a few weeks later.
    We buried her in our front garden and planted some rose bushes on top and around her grave. This was 23 years ago and Pooty Fish’s Rose Garden blooms beautifully year round. ❤ 🌹

    I worked at a large fish store called The Fish Place in North Tonawanda NY years ago. They had zebra plecos for around 60 dollars as I remember. I kept around 6 of them for awhile. I heard a story about someone had some and the heater went bad and the temp spiked very warm well into the 90s and that induced them to breed. Plecos are very cool especially the rarer types.

    I have a 4yr old common pleco, I don't know which type she is (or if she's a she lol). I moved her out of a 75 gallon aquarium and into a 300 gallon stock tank. I always wonder if I am feeding her the right food, or enough food. I think she was pretty hungry all the time when she was in the aquarium. I've been trying Repashy, but she doesn't seem to care for Soilant Green, so I got a small jar of bottom scratcher to try. The only thing I know she loves is freeze dried tubifex worms.

    • @randyhegstad5754
      @randyhegstad5754 6 місяців тому +1

      I don't want to bash around Repashy, but gelatin foods (like Repashy) have been around for decades and there is no reason why they would be better for fish than flake or pellet, or we humans, zoos, National Aquariums would be doing the same gelatin preparation. We don't and so no big deal if your pleco doesn't take to that food either. If your pleco is eating a treat food like freeze dried worms then she is healthy and probably doing most of her scavenging at night, but all plecos do need some natural wood and a good idea to drop just a couple algae wafers in a couple times a week in case she is not getting enough of the regular left overs.

    • @MandyJane123700
      @MandyJane123700 6 місяців тому +1

      @@randyhegstad5754 Well that's good to know. Repashy is expensive, but I thought it would be worth it if it keeps her healthy. I also drop a few Fluval pleco sticks, and sometimes Sera catfish chips in the tank at night. The only competition she has for food now are some snails and rosy minnows. I do have a small piece of driftwood in there, but she would probably appreciate a bigger one.

    • @randyhegstad5754
      @randyhegstad5754 6 місяців тому +1

      It's good you have those rosy minnows. If you are feeding them flake food plecos love the stuff they don't get to.

    • @MandyJane123700
      @MandyJane123700 6 місяців тому

      @@randyhegstad5754 When she was in the 75 gallon she would kind of swim on her back and siphon the flakes off the surface. I do give the minnows flakes, so hopefully Bertha is getting plenty of food. I just never had a fish this big, so it is hard to know just how much to feed. I have lots of small fish, and I know they don't need a lot of food. I guess that since she is still growing, and is looking fat and healthy I should not worry so much!

      Also (producer wrote the last response) those blue plecos - and gold nuggets and several others - are notorious for dying in a few short months. Everyone loves those gold nuggets but not many can get them to grow more than four inches before they die. L139 blue plecos are the same. These are both wild and often do not handle changes regarding pH, ammonia, oxygen, or anything else and often you wont know as they slowly weaken until one morning they are just sitting there on their side. Only sure way is to keep pH on low side - 7 or below, lots and lots of oxygen, and clean no ammonia water. Not easy. Randy

    @ 0.45 seconds, 5:40 that's my fish. @6:38 you have it labeled as L191 and should be L091 Three Beacon Pleco. DATZ created the L-number system, not AquaLog. The L056 is not a Chubby pleco. The L056 does not change colors. What you have is a Parancistrus aurantiacus, they change colors. Neither of these fish share the same L number, nor are they even the same species. The L056 is not in the trade and the name is Pseudancistrus sp. (L056) Black Gudgeon Pleco. The Parancistrus aurantiacus does not have an L#. The gold color comes and goes on the Parancistrus aurantiacus and the price is no different if bred in captivity or not. Only a handful have been bred in captivity and it's not enough to supply the fish hobby. The L102 and L201 are 2 totally different fish. The L102 get around 7" and the L201 around 5". The L201 is not also called the Inspector Pleco, the L201 is the Orinoco Angel Pleco. All plecos do not "need" driftwood. Many rivers in SA have no driftwood present but yet are homes to many species of pleco. The Adonis will reach approx. 40", not 24" and adult Adonis are jet black, some will turn jet black around the 12" - 18" mark, each one will be different. You simply need CITES to bring in L046s and they are just as durable if not more durable than the wild caught Zebras. You can definitely tell male from female L046s once they reach maturity. Captive bred L046's are a dime a dozen in our trade but still have that $90-100 per inch tag. L027 are not rare. Broken Line Royal Pleco is a L190. Several of the Royal Plecos can have stripes, broken stripes, spots, etc. but that is not the correct way to ID the species. There are no plecos native to Trinidad so to say they are native to Trinidad is incorrect. They are from South America. What you are holding is most likely Pterygoplichthys pardalis, the most common pleco sold in the hobby. Sometimes you need to verify by looking at the stomach pattern on this species and a couple others to be 100% sure such as this and the Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus. They also don't come close to 36".

    There are no blue eyed albinos.... they are called blue eyed lemon and are a leucistic line of bristlenose plecos. Similar but not the same as an albino. Breeding a blue eyed lemon and albino will give you a common looking fish that carries both genetics.

    So if stores and customers are always bringing back the common plecos because they get too big for most fish keepers to responsibly house, why buy them???? It seems like you understand how big they get and how much waste they create, you’re obviously not making very much money off of them if you sell them $1 per inch. So why keep buying them???? You know they’re invasive all across the world partially due to people releasing them because they grow too big. So why keep buying them?

      These plecos are from a different part of the world an not as hardy as the common plecos and need different water parameters to survive an thrive

    • @timhorvat7432
      @timhorvat7432 4 місяці тому

      @@coledaugherty553 the species that are often sold as common plecos are from the pterygoplichthys genus which all grow to a similar large size and are similarly hardy. They all come from South America. You can call them whatever common name you’d like, Trinidad, sailfin, common pleco, but they’re all names used to describe species of the pterygoplichthys genus which grows to be larger than most aquarists can responsibly house.

      I work in a pet store and it is crazy how many people bring these back to us, luckily we’re usually pretty happy to take them as we keep them in our large tanks we sell out of and we usually sell them pretty cheaply to other people with large tanks if we’re getting full.
