they need more red herrings lol idk why. For some reason the writers love the unknown identity storylines. They did it with Sauron all season 1, tbh it's better if we just know the wizard identity, just like if we know Sauron is Sauron, because they can then actually write a storyline about the character. Dancing around a "who is this character?" just is not fun or interesting to watch. It's a waste of screentime. Sauron rules in Season 2 bc he is doing cool Sauron stuff, and is still tricking everyone. Wizard is still the same meh "who is wizard" wizard...

That line is about showing mercy instead of killing someone, even if they deserve
death, and in the end it’s Bilbo and Frodo and Sam all sparing Gollum’s life at different points that leads to the ring’s destruction.
Here they have Tom use that line to tell Gandalf(?) that he should let people die so he can find a special stick. Just a wild, awful misunderstanding and misuse of the line and the character of Tom Bombadil

Yeah, i dont know why not many people are talking about this part...the line is awfully used. In the lotr gandalf says that to frodo regarding gollum, who ends up fullfilling a major part in the destruction of the ring. So Galdalf showed how wise he is, because if frodo, or bilbo, had killed him the ring probably woldn't be destroyed.

Yeah, he’s not saying leave your friends and let them die. The point Tom is trying to make is sometimes you have to make hard decisions and you’re gonna have to make a hard one here, because the enemy coming after you, and if you turn back now, you won’t have the chance to get back on this journey

This is Tom Bombadil in the Second Age. What we read in the Fellowship of the Ring is TB in the late Third Age (more than 3,000 years into the Third Age). In the Second Age apparently, he lived in the desert East and was far more interventionist. Several thousand years later something happened so in the late Third Age we see him in the Old Forest in the West and now withdrawn to a small realm not wanting to meddle with the outside world. What could have happened in the several thousand years between the mid-Second Age and the late-Third Age that made Tom change his life attitude?

@samg1879 no it's not. Almost all adaptations made a range of adjustments to... wait for it... ADAPT the material.
Sometimes the choices and changes are for the best, sometimes not, but nothing about that process is intrinsically bad.
If it is to you than stop wasting your time and mine and retreat into a racoon and just read source material and crawl in a ditch and die with it. You are so brittle and sensitive where any alterations are seen as abominations in your warped f*ck mind.
I saw the first season of magicians from lev Grossman years ago, liked it so much I read the books. The show made RADICAL narrative departures and was not just some direct translation, but the changes and choices worked and it was a great show.
If this is all beyond you, wallow in the misery imof your own mind and making. Understand that you deserve that misery and lack of enjoyment for being what you are.
For my part, "I" get to enjoy more things like this in life because I am not saddled with your kind of gloomy brain rot.

  • @easypete7988

Ok. Let me explain why the writers should be fired.
In LOTR, Frodo says to Gandalf, "It's a pity Bilbo didn't kill Gollum when he had the chance". To which Gandalf says "Pity? It's a pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo?"
What he is saying here, is do not be so quick to pass judgment. Frodo over the course of the next few weeks starts to really understand what Gandalf meant, and by the time he meets Smeagol, he is willing to see him for what he is, a victim tormented for hundreds of years.
When the writers rawdog'd this line into ROP, they use it when Gandalf is WANTING TO SAVE HIS FRIENDS. What this quote means in THIS context, is "look pal, some people die, grow up." Keep in mind, he is saying to him "Dog, you need to find your staff, you'll only find it when your focused on one thing." Gandalf says his friends are in mortal peril, and Tommy boi drops that zinger of a line. It works in the complete opposite way it was intended, and makes Tom look more terrible than he already is.
Man I hate the writers. Like you butchered so much of the story, then fan service some LOTR line in where it makes zero sense just so you can point and drool at the time the-really-popular-character said it in the much, much better 20 year old film.
    My apologies, rant over.

By god HOW can you screw this up this badly? Are these the same writers that drove a steam roller over star wars by any chance? There are a lot of callbacks that make me roll my eyes, this is one of them. Not all of them were like this, but this is a contender for one of the worst examples. I really hope that the majority of new writers will have some common sense to stop misusing the lines. Seriously. It NEEDS to stop. You can do it in a more appropriate manner like Elendil getting Narsil as at least it makes sense since Elendil is Aragorn’s ancestor. But don’t do it so sloppy like this.
